Retail internships and CPG internships for summer 2027 are posting now. P&G, PepsiCo, and Unilever already have summer 2027 roles live with rolling deadlines, and the retail chains will follow through the fall. This is the biggest hiring sector for summer interns in the US. Not by a little, either. Brand management, supply chain, merchandising, finance, marketing, e-commerce, and more, all under one roof.

This guide covers 40+ companies organized by sector, with direct career page links, Extern guide links, pay ranges, and projected application windows. Whether you're after a CPG giant like Procter & Gamble or a retail operation like Target, everything you need to start applying is here.

TL;DR

• Retail and CPG companies are the largest intern employers in the US. The peak application window for summer 2027 runs September 2026 through January 2027. Most CPG firms open by October; retail stores post through the spring.

• CPG interns at P&G, PepsiCo, and J&J earn $22 to $38 per hour depending on function. Retail store interns at Walmart, Target, and Costco earn $18 to $25 per hour. Fashion and beauty (Nike, L'Oréal) land in between.

• This guide covers 40+ companies by sector with career page links, Extern guide links, and projected application windows.

• Supply chain, marketing, merchandising, and finance are the four highest-demand intern functions in this space.

• No retail experience yet? A remote Externship in data analytics or marketing gives you a real project to cite on applications.

Externships are short, remote professional experience programs where you work on real projects with real companies. The Beats by Dre Data Analytics Externship builds the consumer-insights skills CPG recruiters look for, and the Beats by Dre Consumer Behavior Market Analysis Externship adds consumer research to your resume.

What Does a Retail or CPG Internship Actually Involve?

A retail or CPG internship is a paid, 10- to 12-week summer placement at a consumer-facing company where you work on real business problems in marketing, supply chain, merchandising, finance, or operations. These aren't shelf-stocking jobs. At the corporate level, you're analyzing sales data, running product launches, rethinking distribution, or building brand campaigns for products millions of people use every day.

The industry splits into three segments, and what you actually do day-to-day looks pretty different across them.

CPG vs Retail Store vs Fashion & Beauty: Which One's Your Fit?

Consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies like P&G, PepsiCo, and Unilever make the products on shelves. Interns work at corporate HQ on brand management, marketing analytics, supply chain optimization, and R&D. You like strategy, data, and building brands at scale? CPG is the lane. P&G's brand management program is widely considered the gold standard for marketing talent, and that's not just a reputation thing. It's where a disproportionate number of CMOs got their start.

Retail stores like Walmart, Target, and Home Depot sell those products (plus a lot more). Interns work on merchandising, store operations, e-commerce, supply chain logistics, and finance. If you want to see the direct impact of your decisions on customers within weeks, retail is it. And honestly, the fastest-growing functions at every major retailer right now are e-commerce and supply chain analytics. Five years ago those intern tracks barely existed.

Fashion and beauty companies like Nike, L'Oréal, and Estée Lauder blend creative marketing with product development. Interns work on visual merchandising, brand marketing, product creation, and digital innovation. Design, consumer trends, brand storytelling. Nike gets roughly 70,000 applications for about 200 WHQ intern spots. So yes, selectivity here is real.

Which Companies Are Hiring for Summer 2027?

Over 40 companies across CPG, food and beverage, retail, and fashion/beauty recruit summer interns every year. Here's who's hiring, organized by sector, with direct links to apply and to our detailed company guides.

CPG Giants

Procter & Gamble runs one of the most respected internship programs in consumer goods. Brand management, supply chain, finance, IT, and R&D tracks all recruit for summer 2027, with applications opening around September 2026. P&G accepts any major for marketing roles. And 70 to 80 percent of interns get return offers.

PepsiCo hires over 1,500 interns across North America every summer, one of the largest classes in CPG. Tracks span Frito-Lay, Quaker, Gatorade, and corporate functions. Applications open late August 2026 with rolling review, and more than half convert to full-time.

Unilever runs a 10-week summer program across marketing, finance, supply chain, and R&D. Here's the thing about Unilever: they close positions the moment they hit their application cap, so submitting in week one actually matters.

Johnson & Johnson spans consumer health, pharmaceuticals, and MedTech. Summer 2027 finance and technology roles are already live. J&J converts roughly 65 to 70 percent of interns to full-time.

Nestlé recruits across marketing, supply chain, sales, and finance from its US headquarters in Arlington, VA. Apply through their careers portal starting fall 2026.

Coca-Cola runs 10- to 12-week internships in marketing, finance, data analytics, supply chain, and IT. The 2027 program is already opening, with deadlines clustering in late January.

Colgate-Palmolive, Kimberly-Clark, and Clorox all run structured summer programs with applications typically opening in fall 2026.

Food & Beverage

General Mills has been a top-10 intern employer on Glassdoor for multiple years running. The 10-week program covers marketing, supply chain, R&D, finance, and sales. Applications open August to September 2026 on a rolling basis.

Kraft Heinz runs a 10-week program (June 7 to August 13, 2027) across marketing, sales, operations, finance, R&D, and HR. Interns earn $26 per hour with free housing. That housing perk is unusual for food companies, and it changes the math on total comp.

Mondelez (Oreo, Cadbury, Trident) and Mars (M&M's, Snickers, Wrigley) both recruit across marketing, supply chain, and finance. Mars is privately held and famously hard to get into. If you land there, people notice.

Hershey, Conagra Brands, Campbell's, and Hormel Foods round out the food tier with structured programs opening fall 2026.

Retail Stores & E-Commerce

Walmart is the largest private employer in the US. Summer internships span merchandising, supply chain, finance, data science, marketing, and engineering. Interns earn $19 to $55 per hour depending on role, and housing is provided. Applications open early August 2026 with rolling review.

Target runs one of the best-known executive internship programs in retail, with 500+ seats across nine tracks. But don't let the word "500" fool you. Acceptance rates are 8 to 12 percent overall, dropping to 5 percent for the most competitive programs. Applications open fall 2026.

Costco famously pays above market. IT and CDS interns earn roughly $31.90 per hour. Postings appear late August through September for IT roles, with corporate tracks opening January to March.

Kroger hires across supply chain, merchandising, finance, and technology from Cincinnati. Home Depot runs an award-winning 11-week program with $24 to $27 per hour pay across 14 career tracks. Lowe's and Best Buy have similar summer programs in operations, merchandising, and technology.

Nordstrom, Macy's, TJX Companies (T.J. Maxx, Marshalls), Burlington, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree all recruit interns in merchandising, buying, operations, and finance.

Fashion, Beauty & Athletic

Nike is the most competitive name in this tier, with a sub-0.3% acceptance rate at WHQ. Internships cover product creation, digital innovation, supply chain, and marketing at the Beaverton, Oregon campus. Applications open mid-August 2026, and design roles close fastest.

L'Oréal runs a paid, 11-week program across nine tracks: marketing, supply chain, finance, digital, and more. Applications are reviewed rolling from August 14 to September 30, 2026. L'Oréal's pipeline is thorough: aptitude test, HireVue video interview, then assessment center.

Estée Lauder has four distinct summer tracks. Lauder Summer and Presidential target undergrads, STEM majors apply to R&D, and first-year MBAs apply to FASLEAP. Expected to open late August 2026.

Ulta Beauty, Sephora (LVMH), Adidas, Gap, and PVH (Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger) all run summer programs across marketing, merchandising, and operations.

How Much Do Retail and CPG Interns Actually Get Paid?

Almost every internship on this list is paid. But the range is wide, and the gap between sectors is worth understanding before you compare offers.

CPG giants sit at the top. P&G, PepsiCo, and J&J pay $22 to $38 per hour for undergrad interns, with finance and supply chain MBA tracks at the high end. P&G and J&J also cover housing or relocation, which adds $3,000 to $5,000 to your total summer comp. That's not nothing.

Food and beverage lands in the middle. General Mills and Kraft Heinz pay $20 to $30 per hour. Kraft Heinz provides free housing for all interns, which is unusual in the food space and significantly changes the total-comp math.

Retail stores pay $18 to $25 per hour for most corporate roles. But there are outliers. Walmart's engineering and data science interns can earn up to $55 per hour. Costco IT interns make $31.90. Home Depot pays $24 to $27. Housing stipends are common at Walmart but rare everywhere else in retail.

Fashion and beauty companies pay $20 to $30 per hour. Nike goes higher for engineering and tech. L'Oréal's program is paid with a hybrid structure. Estée Lauder varies by track.

One detail most students miss: CPG companies are far more likely than retailers to cover housing and relocation. So a $24-per-hour retail offer without housing might actually leave you with less money than a $22-per-hour CPG role that covers your apartment. Compare total comp, not hourly rate.

When Do Summer 2027 Applications Open?

Unlike investment banking (which recruits 12 to 18 months early), most retail and CPG companies recruit 6 to 9 months ahead. But the window is shorter than you'd think. Rolling deadlines mean the earliest applicants get reviewed first.

Here's the calendar:

1. August to October 2026 (NOW). CPG giants (P&G, PepsiCo, Unilever, J&J, General Mills) and fashion leaders (Nike, L'Oréal) open their summer 2027 applications. This is the window that matters most. Rolling review means spots fill before the official deadline.

2. September to November 2026. Food and beverage (Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Mars), beauty (Estée Lauder, Ulta), and some retail chains (Target, Home Depot) open.

3. October 2026 to January 2027. Retail stores (Walmart corporate, Kroger, Lowe's, Best Buy, Costco corporate tracks) post summer 2027 roles. Some are already live.

4. January to March 2027. Late-cycle postings, smaller retailers, second-round openings, unfilled CPG roles.

5. Evergreen/rolling. Walmart, Kroger, and several discount retailers post year-round.

So if you're targeting CPG, you should be applying right now. If you're targeting retail stores, you have until January, but starting in October gives you the best selection. Why wait?

What Skills Are These Companies Actually Looking For?

The top skills across retail and CPG job descriptions are surprisingly consistent: data analysis (Excel, SQL, Tableau), consumer insights, supply chain and logistics, marketing (digital and brand), merchandising and category management, and financial analysis. And retail is getting more technical every year. E-commerce growth means every major retailer now hires for data science, product management, and supply chain analytics. These tracks barely existed in retail intern programs five years ago.

How to Build Those Skills Before You Apply

Here's the honest version: you probably won't learn supply chain analytics in a classroom. But every skill on that list maps to a remote Externship that ends in a finished company project you can put on your resume.

Going into CPG marketing or consumer insights? The Beats by Dre Data Analytics Externship gives you a consumer brand project to reference. Targeting product management or merchandising? The Beats by Dre Consumer Behavior Market Analysis Externship builds exactly the consumer research experience that retail and CPG recruiters want to see.

The point isn't to fake industry experience. It's to show you can do analytical work on real business problems. And most recruiters in this space care more about your ability to structure a problem and work with data than whether you've specifically worked in retail before.

How Do You Get In with No Retail or CPG Experience?

Most students applying to these programs don't have prior industry experience. Recruiters know that. What they're looking for is analytical thinking, leadership, and the ability to learn fast.

Three things that actually work:

Use whatever customer-facing or analytical experience you have. Restaurant work, campus org leadership, a part-time retail job, a data project from a class. Both sides matter. You don't need a perfect resume. You need a coherent story about how you think about consumers and how you work with information.

Get a real project on your resume. A remote Externship gives you a company-endorsed project that's more specific and more credible than coursework. When a P&G recruiter reads "completed a consumer insights project with Beats by Dre," that registers differently than "took Marketing 301."

Target companies that explicitly hire from every major. P&G is famous for this on their brand management track. General Mills, Unilever, and PepsiCo do the same. Their interview processes (case studies, behavioral questions, analytical exercises) test how you think, not what you studied.

You don't need a business degree. You don't need prior retail experience. You need to show you can think analytically about consumer problems and that you've taken initiative beyond the classroom. Explore all Externships.

FAQ

Do retail and CPG internships lead to full-time offers?

Yes. Major CPG companies convert 70 to 85 percent of interns to full-time roles. P&G and General Mills are consistently above 80 percent. J&J sits around 65 to 70 percent. Retail chains are more variable: some hover around 50 percent while Target's executive intern program converts over 80 percent. Conversion rates are one of the strongest reasons to target this sector.

Can I get a CPG internship without a business degree?

Yes. P&G, Unilever, and PepsiCo all accept any major for brand management and marketing roles. Liberal arts, STEM, and social science majors are well-represented in CPG intern classes. Supply chain and finance tracks sometimes prefer related majors, but your interview performance matters more than the degree name.

What's the difference between a merchandising internship and a marketing internship?

Merchandising focuses on product selection, pricing, and shelf placement. You're deciding what goes in stores and at what price. Marketing focuses on brand strategy, advertising, and consumer engagement. You're deciding how the product gets promoted. Both exist at retailers and CPG companies, but merchandising is more common at retail stores (Target, TJX, Nordstrom) and marketing at CPG (P&G, Unilever, Coca-Cola).

Are retail internships paid?

Almost always. Corporate internships at major retailers (Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot) and CPG companies are paid, typically $18 to $38 per hour. Unpaid retail internships are rare and generally limited to very small companies or nonprofits. Every company in the table above pays its summer interns.

When should I start applying for summer 2027?

Now (September 2026). CPG companies like P&G, PepsiCo, and General Mills are already posting summer 2027 roles with rolling deadlines. Fashion leaders like Nike and L'Oréal opened in August. Retail stores generally post October through January. Apply in the first two weeks of a posting going live, because rolling review means early applicants get reviewed first.

What are the best CPG companies to intern at?

P&G, PepsiCo, General Mills, Johnson & Johnson, and Unilever consistently rank highest for intern experience on Glassdoor and Vault. P&G's brand management program is widely considered the gold standard for marketing careers. General Mills has been a top-10 intern employer on Glassdoor for multiple years. Kraft Heinz stands out for providing free housing. For full details on each, check the individual company guides linked in the table above.
