Last updated: October 2026
Meijer's summer 2027 internship is mid-cycle: 24 postings are open today and about a dozen others are already gone. On October 26, 2026, Meijer's own job system listed 24 summer 2027 internships, 19 of them Store Leadership internships in stores across six states and 5 corporate roles in Grand Rapids. At least 11 corporate tracks posted in September, including finance, data science and merchandising, had already closed. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and the corporate tracks move fast, so the earlier you apply the better.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often in 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship works on the workforce and operations problems store leaders manage, and the Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights Externship practices the consumer analysis behind grocery merchandising. What Is a Meijer Internship?
A Meijer internship is an 11-week paid summer program at Meijer, the family-owned retailer headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Meijer's own postings describe more than 70,000 employees and over 270 stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin. The program comes in two forms: corporate internships at the Grand Rapids headquarters, and the Store Leadership internship, titled Retail Management Intern, which puts you in a store and ends with you leading a department. Meijer's store jobs, pharmacy intern roles and other hourly work are separate. Meijer doesn't publish a class size on its own pages.

When Do Meijer Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Meijer posts its summer internships in the first weeks of September. The summer 2027 corporate and Store Leadership postings carry a September 8, 2026 posting date, Food Safety followed on September 10, Human Resources on October 15 and Retail Design again on October 21. Last cycle's pattern was nearly the same: archived Meijer pages show summer 2026 postings dated September 3, 2025, so the date moved five days. For an early-June start, our assumption since the postings give no start date, the postings open about 9 months ahead. Corporate tracks then close quickly: finance, data science, merchandising, supply chain and others posted in September no longer appear. Meijer prints no closing dates, so we expect the summer 2028 wave in the first week of September 2027.
24 summer 2027 internships are open: 19 Store Leadership postings and corporate roles in IT, Human Resources, Food Safety, Store Experience and Retail Design. About a dozen corporate tracks are already closed.
Apply this week to corporate roles. Meijer prints no closing dates, and 11 corporate postings from September disappeared within seven weeks. Human Resources (October 15) and Retail Design (October 21) are the newest and may close fastest. Store Leadership postings stayed open past seven weeks, but each market is a separate posting.
Interviews. Meijer doesn't publish its stages. A candidate on Reddit describes a one-sided, pre-recorded webcam interview for an IT role. Postings disappear when filled, so a role can close before you hear back.
Eleven weeks. Corporate interns work on projects and give final presentations to senior executives. Store Leadership interns spend the first half learning retail and the second half as an Intern Team Leader. Meijer doesn't publish a start date.
Summer 2028 corporate postings expected, if the pattern of September 3, 2025 and September 8, 2026 holds (medium-high confidence, two cycles). Store Leadership postings usually stay open longer. Check jobs.meijer.com/internships that week.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Meijer's corporate internships are a short-window game, and the board proves it. Eleven corporate tracks posted in September, including finance, data science, merchandising, supply chain and risk intelligence, were gone by October 26, and Meijer never printed a closing date for any of them. We re-confirmed two closures, Finance and IT User Experience, with Workday's closed-versus-never-existed signal. Store Leadership is different: its 19 markets were still open seven weeks in. If you want a corporate role, apply in the first week postings appear, and treat the Store Leadership roles as a second option, not a plan B you can postpone.
Which Meijer Internship Programs Should You Target?
Meijer's summer program has two tracks, and the corporate one is mostly gone. The table separates them and flags the student jobs that aren't part of the program.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store Leadership Internship (19 postings, titled Retail Management Intern) | Retail operations and leadership: foundation of retail knowledge in the first half, then Intern Team Leader responsible for results | 11 weeks, on-site in a store | 19 markets in MI, IL, IN, OH, KY and WI; nights and weekends possible; Illinois postings print $20.50 - $30.05 |
| Corporate internships, open (5 postings) | Information Technology, Human Resources, Food Safety, Store Experience, Retail Design | 11 weeks, Grand Rapids, hybrid | Projects, final presentation to senior executives, speaker series; majors named per track |
| Corporate internships, closed (11 tracks) | Finance, Data Science, Merchandising, Supply Chain Manufacturing and Inbound Logistics, Labor Industrial Engineering, IT User Experience, Information Security, Risk Intelligence, Community Partnerships, Indirect Procurement | 11 weeks | Posted in September 2026 and no longer on the board; expect these tracks again in September 2027 |
| Pharmacy Intern and Store Detective Intern (separate student jobs) | Part-time student roles in store pharmacies and asset protection, posted continuously on the hourly site | Part time | Not the summer program; Meijer posts them separately |
Browse the program on jobs.meijer.com/internships. Meijer's postings also cover functional areas such as merchandising, analytics, engineering, legal, design and communications in other cycles.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Requirements are set by track. These come from the 24 summer 2027 postings we read on October 26, 2026.
• Store Leadership: students currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program. Retail experience is preferred, not required, and leadership experience, at work or in extracurriculars, is strongly preferred. Flexible shifts, including nights and weekends.
• IT: progress toward a bachelor's in information systems, computer science, computer engineering, data science or a related field.
• Human Resources: progress toward a bachelor's, preferably in HR, labor and industrial relations or organizational development. The intern posting says 2 to 4 years of professional work experience is highly preferred.
• Retail Design and Food Safety: progress toward a bachelor's in interior, architectural, graphic or industrial design for Retail Design, and in food science, biological sciences, chemistry, nutrition, culinary science or engineering for Food Safety.
• GPA, class year, work authorization: none of the 24 postings states one.

Do You Need Retail Experience?
Not for Store Leadership. Meijer's posting prefers retail experience but doesn't require it, and says leadership experience is strongly preferred, which can come from a job, a club or a team. Corporate roles ask for a matching major instead. The HR posting is the outlier: it says 2 to 4 years of professional experience is highly preferred, which is unusual for an intern role. Apply if the rest fits, but know the line is there.
What Skills Does Meijer Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Meijer's postings split cleanly by track. The 19 Store Leadership postings share one template: leadership, retail operations, profit and loss, customer service and communication, with most of the day on the floor. Corporate IT postings name specific stacks, including Azure, .NET and C#, Java, Python, SQL and React, depending on the team. Retail Design lists Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp and Revit, and the HR posting names Workday and Kronos.
Note: We didn't chart skills for Meijer. 19 of the 24 postings are one Store Leadership template, so percentages would describe that template, not a skills distribution. The tools above are each named in a single corporate posting.

For Meijer applicants: Meijer's own job system listed 24 summer 2027 internships on October 26, 2026, 19 of them Store Leadership roles in stores, the most open of any track.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each theme in Meijer's postings maps to a remote Externship you can finish while the postings are still open. The fit is partial, since no open Externship covers retail floor leadership directly.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Operations and people management | Store Leadership: lead a department, manage results and mentor team members | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Consumer insight and merchandising | Merchandising and Store Experience internships in Meijer's functional areas | Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights |
| Financial analysis and P&L | Store Leadership interns are responsible for sales, shrink and profit and loss; Finance internship (closed this cycle) | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| SQL and data | IT internship stacks name SQL, data pipelines and Power BI | SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games |
The operations and consumer rows are the closest fits for the open roles. For retail floor skills, a customer-facing job, a club leadership role or team captaincy is the best proof.
What Is the Meijer Application and Interview Process Like?
Meijer doesn't publish its interview stages. This is what its pages and candidates show.
1. Find your role. Search jobs.meijer.com/internships by track and market. Store Leadership is one posting per market.
2. Apply. The apply button on each posting opens Meijer's Workday application, a multi-step form.
3. Interview. Meijer doesn't state the format. A candidate describes a one-sided, pre-recorded webcam interview for an IT role, so be ready for a video step.
4. Offer. Timing isn't published, and postings close when filled.
Meijer publishes no interview questions.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit threads on Meijer internships are thin and mostly about corporate IT, so read the dates. We paraphrased three first-hand comments.
A former Meijer IT intern said the intern program was pretty great and led to their first job out of college. They were much less positive about corporate IT afterward, and other commenters in the thread, who were full-time staff, called pay below market.
A candidate for a Meijer IT role described a one-sided interview: questions appeared on screen and they answered to a webcam, with no idea whether an IT manager or HR would watch. They said they wouldn't do that format again.
Asked whether Meijer internships are paid and where they happen, a commenter said yes, they're paid. Corporate internships almost all take place at the Grand Rapids office, and Store Leadership internships take place in stores.
How Do You Stand Out for a Meijer Internship?
First, apply early and to the right posting. Corporate roles close fast and each track names a major, so match yours before you click apply. Second, for Store Leadership, bring a leadership example from anywhere: a team, a club, a job. Meijer's posting says that experience is strongly preferred, and you'll be leading a department by the second half. Third, prepare for a recorded video step. Meijer doesn't confirm it, but a candidate reports one. Meijer doesn't publish a class size, a conversion rate or a GPA bar, so treat any figure elsewhere as unverified.

Is a Meijer pharmacy intern role the same thing?
No. Pharmacy Intern and Store Detective Intern roles are part-time student jobs in stores, posted continuously on Meijer's separate hourly site. They aren't part of the 11-week summer program. If you're a pharmacy student, they're worth checking, but they follow their own rules.
Apply this week to the Meijer track and market that fit you, starting with any corporate role you want. While you wait, a remote Externship gives you a finished operations or consumer project to talk about in the interview.
