Last updated: October 2026
H-E-B's summer internship window is about five weeks long, and the summer 2027 one closes on Sunday, 18 October 2026. Applications opened on 14 September, and on 3 October H-E-B's own job board still listed all 14 intern requisitions, every one set to expire on 18 October. H-E-B's careers team gave the same date in its announcement post. The program itself runs 10 weeks, from 24 May to 30 July 2027.
In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027. The catch most students miss is that only Store, Manufacturing, Warehousing and Transportation internships are open to outside applicants. H-E-B's Corporate and Digital internships for 2027 are reserved for current, college-enrolled H-E-B Partners (employees), the second year in a row it has done that. H-E-B is a privately held Texas grocer founded in 1905, with 464+ stores in Texas and Mexico and more than $50.8 billion in annual sales, per its intern postings.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most running 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the operations analysis H-E-B's supply chain and manufacturing tracks use, and the Consumer Behavior Insights Externship with Generous Brands builds the shopper insight behind store operations. What Is an H-E-B Internship?
An H-E-B internship is a paid, 10-week summer program in Texas where you're placed in a store, plant, warehouse or transportation team and own a project that solves a current business problem. H-E-B says in every intern req that "we see these solutions get implemented across the business every summer."
Store Operations interns are assigned to one store and learn financials, inventory, people planning, HR and customer service from operations leaders. Supply chain and manufacturing interns work inside H-E-B's manufacturing, warehousing and transportation division, which runs 15 plants making 1,650+ products and 12.1 million square feet of distribution centers. The Fellows Rotational Internship is a separate three-summer track for first-year students. Interns also network with senior leaders, join community outreach and meet a cohort from universities across the country. H-E-B calls its employees Partners, and it's one of the largest independently owned food retailers in the US.

When Do H-E-B Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
H-E-B runs one external window a year, and it's short. Last cycle, applications for summer 2026 opened on 15 September 2025 and closed on 10 October 2025, per H-E-B's students page and an applicant's completion-deadline email. This cycle, applications for summer 2027 opened on 14 September 2026, and all 14 external reqs carry an expiry of Sunday, 18 October 2026 on H-E-B's own job board. H-E-B's students page describes the same pattern every year: applications mid-September to mid-October, reviews and interviews October to March, and most offers in April. Applications for summer 2028 are expected around mid-September to mid-October 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now and close in about two weeks. All 14 external reqs were live on 3 October: eight Store Operations regions and banners, five supply chain and manufacturing tracks, and the Fellows track for first-year students.
Applications for summer 2027 close. The expiry is set on every external req and matches H-E-B's own announcement. Finish the HireVue video before then too, because an incomplete application doesn't count.
Recruiters review applications and run interviews. Last cycle, applicants were still seeing "under review" in early January, so a quiet inbox in December isn't a rejection.
H-E-B's students page says the majority or all internship offers go out in April. Applicants to several tracks may be offered a choice.
Ten weeks from 24 May to 30 July 2027, full time and in person. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around mid-September 2027 and close about a month later.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
H-E-B's window has a published end, so this isn't about beating a rolling queue. It's about not missing the cutoff. Every external intern req on H-E-B's board expires on 18 October 2026, and the careers team's own post says applications close that Sunday. After that, the external door stays shut until roughly mid-September 2027, and that window is for summer 2028.
The application also has a second step. H-E-B's students FAQ tells applicants to complete the HireVue video, and applicants last year got an email with a hard completion deadline after they applied. One commenter warned that missing it means automatic rejection. Leave yourself a few days between applying and the close.
Which H-E-B Internship Programs Should You Target?
H-E-B posts one req per track, and Store Operations has a separate req for each region or banner. You can apply to more than one; H-E-B's FAQ says to apply to any you're qualified for.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store Operations Management (Houston, San Antonio, Central Texas, Border, Gulf Coast, NorthWest, Central Market, Joe V's) | Running a store with its leaders: financials, inventory, people planning, HR, customers | 10 weeks | Communication, people skills; retail schedule with nights and weekends |
| Supply Chain & Transportation Leadership | Warehouse and transport operations: safety, cost, efficiency, product flow | 10 weeks | Houston, San Antonio, San Marcos or Temple; associate's degree students eligible |
| Supply Chain Strategy | Reports, tools and data analytics for forecasting, inventory planning and logistics | 10 weeks | San Antonio; analysis and presentation |
| Manufacturing Strategy & Manufacturing Operations | Process improvement to cut losses across 15 plants; plant operations | 10 weeks | San Antonio or Houston; rotating plant schedules |
| Industrial Properties Strategy | Maintenance and reliability strategy for warehouses and plants | 10 weeks | San Antonio; cost focus |
| Fellows Rotational Internship | A different division each summer for three summers | 10 weeks a year, 3 years | First-year bachelor's students; leadership aptitude; housing support |
Corporate tracks such as Own Brand, Merchandising and Planning & Analysis, and Digital tracks such as software engineering, aren't on the public board for 2027. See the H-E-B students page for the full program FAQ.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
None of the 14 external reqs sets a GPA floor. The real gates are enrollment, availability and Partner status:
• Enrollment: Store Operations needs a current bachelor's or master's student. Supply chain and manufacturing tracks also accept associate's degree students. Fellows is only for current first-year bachelor's students.
• Availability: the full 10 weeks, full time and in person, on a varying schedule that includes nights and weekends for store and plant roles.
• Location and transport: all roles are in Texas, you may be placed up to 45 miles from your home, and you need reliable transportation (Store Ops also accepts public transit).
• Physical: Store Ops interns lift up to 20 lbs regularly; plant and warehouse interns lift 20+ lbs occasionally.
• Work authorization: none of the reqs includes a sponsorship statement either way, so ask a recruiter if it applies to you.

Can Outside Students Get a Corporate or Digital Internship?
Not for summer 2027. H-E-B's careers team said its 2027 Corporate and Digital internships "will only be available to current, college-enrolled Partners", and it made the same call for 2026. The public board backs that up: none of its 1,134 reqs on 3 October was a corporate or digital internship. If that's the side you want, the realistic routes are an external Store, supply chain or Fellows internship now, or a part-time H-E-B job while you're in school, which makes you a Partner for the next cycle.
What Skills Does H-E-B Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
H-E-B's intern reqs don't list software or certifications. Every one of the 14 describes the same profile, "a Heart for People, Head for Business, and Passion for Results", and then lists people skills: strong verbal and written communication and presentation, organization and time management, handling multiple priorities with attention to detail, teamwork, and a willingness to learn. The track-specific layer is lighter. Store Ops reqs add store financials and inventory, the supply chain and manufacturing reqs add relationship-building and active listening, and the strategy reqs add cost, data analytics and process improvement.

How Is Demand for Retail and Supply Chain Interns Moving Right Now?
Supply chain intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 461 in August
Most operations internships went live in September, so H-E-B's window overlaps the busiest month of the season. Apply to H-E-B before 18 October even if you're still waiting on other companies.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project, the kind of example a HireVue STAR question asks for.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Supply chain and operations analysis | Supply Chain Strategy: "provide data analytics to support... supply and demand forecasting, inventory planning, logistics, and cost optimization" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Store financials | Store Ops: "Be prepared to learn about financials, inventory, people planning, HR" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
| Customer and shopper insight | Store Ops: "taking care of our customers" | Consumer Behavior Insights with Generous Brands |
| Solving a business problem and presenting it | All tracks: "Oversee a project and create a solution for a current business challenge" | Corporate Strategy Externship mentored by Eric Ries |
Because the window closes on 18 October, apply first. An externship over the winter still gives you a fresh project to discuss if your interview lands in January or February.
What Is the H-E-B Application and Interview Process Like?
H-E-B's students page and applicant reports describe a process that starts fast and then runs slowly:
1. Apply before 18 October. Use the internship search on careers.heb.com. Apply to every track you qualify for; recruiters can steer you to the best fit.
2. Complete the HireVue video. H-E-B's FAQ answers "Should I complete the HireVue video?" with "Yes!". Applicants report recorded behavioral questions and a completion deadline emailed after they apply.
3. Recruiter review and interviews. October through March. Expect long gaps; applicants last cycle were still under review in January.
4. Offers. The majority or all offers are extended in April, according to H-E-B's students page.
5. Program. 24 May to 30 July 2027, starting with a cohort of interns from universities nationwide.
Prepare STAR stories about leading people, serving customers and improving a process, since those match the profile H-E-B writes into every req. Our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool covers the recorded format.
What Students on Reddit Say
Most H-E-B internship threads are on r/HEB, written by applicants and current Partners.
An applicant who applied on 1 October 2025 got an email the next day saying the application was incomplete until the HireVue was done, with a hard deadline. Their HireVue had four general STAR questions plus two simple coding questions for a software track, and commenters warned that missing the window means automatic rejection.
In early January 2026, applicants who had applied to three or four summer internships were still seeing "under review", while others had started getting decisions. One person who applied to four tracks said H-E-B let them choose among all four.
An industrial engineering student with an H-E-B Manufacturing Strategy offer in San Antonio asked whether to take it over an Amazon area manager internship. Most replies said take H-E-B, for the process improvement work, the stability and a better work-life balance.
How Do You Stand Out for an H-E-B Internship?
Three moves, all doable before 18 October.
First, apply wide inside your fit. H-E-B tells students to apply to every track they qualify for, and applicants report being offered a choice. A supply chain major can reasonably apply to Supply Chain Strategy, Supply Chain & Transportation Leadership and a Store Operations region.
Second, speak to the profile H-E-B prints in every req: Heart for People, Head for Business, Passion for Results. Have one story for each, such as a team you led, a cost or process you improved, and a result you drove.
Third, show you know H-E-B. Mention its own-brand manufacturing (1,650+ products from 15 plants) for manufacturing tracks, or the difference between H-E-B, Central Market and Joe V's for Store Ops. H-E-B doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate, so treat every step as competitive. Freshmen should look hard at Fellows, since it's the only track with a stated full-time offer intent.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 H-E-B internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and its applications closed on 10 October 2025. What's open now is summer 2027: Store Operations, supply chain, manufacturing and Fellows internships, which run 24 May to 30 July 2027. Those applications close on Sunday, 18 October 2026, so apply this week.
When do H-E-B summer 2027 internship applications close?
Sunday, 18 October 2026. Every external intern req on H-E-B's job board expires that day, and H-E-B's careers team announced the same date when applications opened on 14 September 2026. If you miss it, the next window, for summer 2028, is expected around mid-September to mid-October 2027.
Can I apply to H-E-B's corporate or Digital internships?
Not as an outside applicant for 2027. H-E-B says its Corporate and Digital internships will only be available to current, college-enrolled Partners, the same rule it used for 2026. Outside students can apply to Store Operations, supply chain, manufacturing and Fellows tracks, or join H-E-B part-time first.
Which H-E-B internships are open to external students?
Fourteen reqs: Store Operations Management in eight regions and banners, Supply Chain and Transportation Leadership, Supply Chain Strategy, Manufacturing Strategy, Manufacturing Operations, Industrial Properties Strategy, and the Fellows Rotational Internship for first-year students. All are in Texas and run 10 weeks.
Does H-E-B pay interns, and how much?
Yes, the internships are paid, but H-E-B doesn't publish an hourly rate in any of its 14 intern postings, and Texas doesn't require one. The Fellows req adds housing support for qualified candidates. Ask your recruiter for the rate once you reach the interview stage.
What is the H-E-B Fellows Rotational Internship?
It's a three-summer program for current first-year bachelor's students. Fellows work in a different division each summer, and H-E-B states its intent to extend a full-time offer after the junior summer. Fellows on corporate teams work in person in San Antonio, with housing support for qualified candidates.
What is the H-E-B internship interview process?
You apply online, then complete a HireVue video interview, which H-E-B's FAQ tells applicants to finish. Recruiters review applications and interview from October to March, and the majority or all offers go out in April. Applicants report recorded behavioral STAR questions and long waits between steps.
Does H-E-B require a minimum GPA for interns?
No. None of the 14 summer 2027 reqs states a GPA floor. They screen on enrollment, full availability for the 10 weeks, reliable transportation, and the profile H-E-B describes as a Heart for People, Head for Business, and Passion for Results, so experience and interview answers carry more weight.
H-E-B's summer 2027 window closes on Sunday, 18 October 2026. Apply first, and if you want a finished project to bring to a winter interview, a remote Externship takes about 8 weeks.
