Last updated: October 2026
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago has 14 summer 2027 internship roles open on its Workday board, all posted on 1 October 2026. The requisitions say applications are due in "October - November 2026" without naming a day, interviews and offers run from November to February, and interns start on 7 or 14 June 2027, about eight months after the roles went up. In plain words: you apply this fall, you intern in summer 2027.
Each role pays an anticipated $20 to $33 an hour, set by academic level, for 10 to 12 weeks on site. Because no closing day is published, apply this month rather than waiting for late November. If you miss the window, the next one is for summer 2028, expected from October 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks (range 4–11) at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship builds the data-to-insight skills the Bank's postings ask for, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship suits the accounting and business tracks. What Is a Chicago Fed Internship?
A Chicago Fed internship is a paid summer placement of 10 to 12 weeks in one department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, from economic research and cloud engineering to internal audit, library science and marketing. Interns work 40 hours a week on site and join seminars, skill-building workshops and an executive speaker series.
The Chicago Fed is one of the 12 regional Reserve Banks. It serves the Seventh District, which covers Iowa and most of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, and works from 230 South LaSalle Street with a Detroit Branch. This guide covers the Chicago Fed only; the Federal Reserve Board and the other Reserve Banks run separate programs.

When Do Chicago Fed Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
These dates come from the Chicago Fed itself. Its internship page describes a single annual cycle: internships are posted from October to January, selected candidates are assigned to a department and onboarded from January to May, and all interns begin in June. The 14 summer-2027 requisitions were posted on 1 October 2026 (Workday start date) and state that applications are due in October and November 2026, interviews and offers run from November through February, and start dates are 7 or 14 June 2027.
Last cycle's close is only partly documented. The Bank's LinkedIn account said summer-2025 applications were open through Friday 22 November 2024, but we saw that only in a search snippet. We expect summer-2028 roles to post from October 2027, with medium confidence.
Applications for summer 2027 are open for all 14 roles, and none has closed. The requisitions encourage you to apply to every opening you qualify for, so pick each track that fits your major and year.
Applications due, per the requisitions. No day is published, so don't wait for the end of November; the Bank's summer-2025 window ran to 22 November 2024 by its own LinkedIn post.
A recruiter contacts qualified candidates to schedule interviews, and offers are extended through February. Economic Research applicants submit a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcripts and two references.
Selected interns are assigned to one department and complete onboarding. After an offer is accepted, the Bank runs education, employment, criminal-history and credit-history checks.
Internship start dates, for 10 to 12 weeks on site. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post from October 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The Chicago Fed hasn't published a closing day, which is a reason to move early rather than a reason to relax. The requisitions say applications are due in October and November, and Workday postings for fixed-term cohorts tend to come down once recruiting is done.
Because each role is its own posting with its own duties, a strong application is tailored to one team. Choose your top two or three tracks now, and apply to every one you qualify for, as the Bank itself suggests.
Which Chicago Fed Internship Programs Should You Target?
You apply to a track, not to the Bank as a whole. The 14 summer-2027 requisitions fall into five groups:
| Group | Tracks (summer 2027) | Who the postings ask for | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technology and data | Cloud Engineering; Data Science and Business Analytics; Cybersecurity and Information Security; Networking and Computer Engineering; Computer Science and Software Engineering; PhD Data Science or Computer Science | Students graduating December 2027 or later; 2.75 GPA; the PhD track is for doctoral students | Chicago |
| Economic research | Economic Research (undergraduate, graduate and PhD) | Bachelor's candidates graduating Fall 2027 or later in economics, finance or a related field; research experience; cover letter, transcripts and two references; 12 weeks | Chicago |
| Business and accounting | Business Majors; Accounting Majors; Undergraduate Internal Audit Majors; Business Undergrad Majors (Detroit Branch) | Business, finance, accounting and audit students; 2.75 GPA | Chicago and Detroit |
| Communications | Marketing, Communications, Journalism Majors | Students in those majors; 2.75 GPA | Chicago |
| Other majors | Information and Library Science; Non-Business Majors (for example criminal justice, international affairs, liberal arts) | Students in library science or non-business majors; 2.75 GPA | Chicago |
Every track pays an anticipated $20 to $33 an hour. See the Chicago Fed internship page for the program overview and the Workday board for every requisition.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The requirements below are repeated across the requisitions:
• Work authorization: U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
• Enrollment: a current, matriculated student in an accredited program graduating December 2027 or later (Economic Research: Fall 2027 or later).
• GPA: 2.75 on 13 of the 14 roles, and unofficial transcripts may be requested. The Economic Research role lists no GPA number but requires transcripts.
• Hours: 40 hours a week for 10 to 12 consecutive weeks, on site.
• Screening and ethics: after an offer is accepted, education, employment, criminal-history and credit checks apply. Bank ethics rules generally bar owning stock in banks and their holding companies, so raise any holdings with the recruiter.

Do You Need to Major in Economics?
No. The Bank's internship page says not to worry if you aren't an economics or finance major, and lists roles from marketing and human resources to information technology and project management. This year's board has dedicated tracks for accounting, audit, library science, marketing and non-business majors.
One trap: the Bank's separate research-internships page still says it isn't hiring interns, while an Economic Research intern role is open on Workday. Go by Workday.
What Skills Does the Chicago Fed Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Thirteen of the 14 requisitions share one skills template: working knowledge of Word and Excel, strong interpersonal and communication skills, presenting to small and medium groups, and turning data into insights that support decisions. Every posting also asks for a detail-oriented, self-motivated team player. The Bank's internship page adds leadership, teamwork and an appreciation for community.
The Economic Research role is the technical outlier. It asks for evidence of quantitative and analytical aptitude through research experience and some exposure to Stata, R, Python, MATLAB or ArcGIS.

For Chicago Fed applicants: the Bank posted all 14 of its summer-2027 intern roles on 1 October 2026 and says applications are due in October and November, so its window is shorter than the full October-to-January posting season it describes.

What Is the Chicago Fed Application and Interview Process Like?
The Chicago Fed's internship page and the requisitions describe this sequence:
1. Apply on Workday. Search the Federal Reserve System careers site, filter to the Chicago Fed, and apply to every opening you qualify for.
2. Submit your materials. Economic Research needs a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcripts and two references (not letters); other tracks may ask for an unofficial transcript.
3. Interview. A recruiter contacts qualified candidates to schedule an interview; interviews and offers run November through February.
4. Onboarding and screening. Selected interns are assigned to one department between January and May, and screening checks start once you accept an offer.
5. Summer program. Interns begin 7 or 14 June 2027 for 10 to 12 weeks.
The Bank doesn't publish interview formats, so ask your recruiter what to expect.
What the Community Says
We found no first-hand, recent account of the Chicago Fed intern process we could verify. The only Chicago Fed intern comment we read was a single 2020 reply, so this guide relies on the Bank's own internship page and requisitions instead.
How Do You Stand Out for a Chicago Fed Internship?
Three moves, based on how the postings are written.
First, apply to every track you qualify for. The Bank says so directly, and with 14 separate requisitions, one application per fitting track multiplies your chances.
Second, tell a data story. Thirteen requisitions ask for the ability to interpret data and analytics to develop insights and support decisions, so lead your resume with a project that turned numbers into a recommendation.
Third, prepare a real answer on public service and community, which the Bank names on its internship page. The Chicago Fed doesn't publish class sizes or an acceptance rate, so there's no figure to quote.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Chicago Fed internship?
No. The summer 2026 program started last June. Summer 2027 applications are open now, with the requisitions saying applications are due in October and November 2026. If you miss that window, the next one is for summer 2028, expected to post from October 2027, according to the Bank's own October-to-January posting timeline.
When are Chicago Fed internship applications due?
The requisitions say "October - November 2026" and give no day. The Bank's LinkedIn account said its summer 2025 applications were open through Friday 22 November 2024. Because the exact close isn't published, apply in October rather than risk a posting coming down early.
How much do Chicago Fed interns make?
Each requisition lists an anticipated hourly range of $20 to $33, with the rate set by the candidate's academic level. Interns work 40 hours a week for 10 to 12 weeks. The Bank doesn't publish a total or housing help, so don't rely on third-party estimates.
What GPA do you need for a Chicago Fed internship?
Thirteen of the 14 requisitions require a 2.75 GPA, and unofficial transcripts may be requested. The Economic Research requisition lists no GPA number but requires unofficial transcripts, a cover letter, a resume and contact details for two references who can speak to your research aptitude.
Do I need to be a US citizen for a Chicago Fed internship?
You need to be a US citizen or permanent resident and be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future. The requisitions state this directly, so students who need sponsorship, including most F-1 students, don't meet the stated requirements.
Do I need to be an economics major?
No. The Bank says not to worry if you aren't an economics or finance major. This year's tracks include accounting, internal audit, information and library science, marketing and communications, technology, and a non-business majors track that names criminal justice, international affairs and liberal arts as examples.
When do Chicago Fed internships start?
Interns start on 7 or 14 June 2027 and work 10 to 12 consecutive weeks. The Bank's timeline says selected candidates are assigned to a department and onboarded between January and May, and all interns begin in June. Economic Research interns work 12 weeks.
Where are Chicago Fed internships located?
On site. Thirteen requisitions are in Chicago at 230 South LaSalle Street, and one business undergraduate role is at the Detroit Branch. The requisitions state no remote option and don't mention housing or relocation help, so plan to be in the city for the full program.
If you can't apply this fall, the next window is expected from October 2027, which gives you a year to build proof. A remote Externship in data, finance or security gives your summer-2028 application a finished project to point to.
