Last updated: October 2026
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York posted 25 "2027 Summer Intern" roles on 1 September 2026 and gives each program one short window. The sophomore window closed on 28 September. The junior and graduate windows closed on Monday, 5 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST, about eight months before the ten-week program starts in early June 2027. In plain words: summer 2027 is now closed, so the next door is summer 2028, which you apply for in September 2027.
Each posting publishes its pay as an annual salary basis, paid only for the ten weeks worked: $72,100 for juniors and $94,900 for graduate students in New York. With 5 October past, the next undergraduate window is for summer 2028, expected in early September 2027; first-year law students have a separate clerkship that usually opens in January.

What Is a New York Fed Internship?
A New York Fed internship is a paid, ten-week, full-time summer placement in one business area of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, such as the Markets Group that carries out open market operations, Supervision, Research, Technology, Audit or Legal. Separate programs serve sophomores, juniors, graduate students, PhD economists and first-year law students.
The New York Fed is one of the twelve Reserve Banks of the Federal Reserve System, with approximately 3,000 people working toward a mission to make the US economy stronger and the financial system more stable. Every intern posting describes the same structure: a cohort-based program, an experienced professional mentor, and learning events with senior leaders. This guide covers the New York Fed only; the Board of Governors in Washington and the other Reserve Banks run separate programs on their own calendars.

When Do New York Fed Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
These dates come from the New York Fed itself. All 25 summer-2027 postings went up on 1 September 2026 on its Workday board, and each states its deadline: 28 September for sophomores and 5 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST for juniors and graduate students. The bank's published timeline then runs two rounds of interviews in October and November, with offers in December.
The calendar is stable. The summer-2024 program closed on 4 October 2023, and the timeline graphic on each program page describes the same rhythm every year: open in early September, close in early October. The sophomore page now says to check back in September 2027 for the 2028 program, so applications for summer 2028 are expected to open in early September 2027.
Every summer-2027 undergraduate and graduate track has closed: the 12 sophomore roles on 28 September 2026, and the 8 junior roles (Audit, Markets in New York and Chicago, Research, Executive Office, People & Engagement, Supervision, Technology) and 5 graduate roles on 5 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Interviews run in October and November. Next windows: 1L law clerk, expected January 2027; summer 2028, expected early September 2027.
Summer-2027 junior and graduate applications closed. The New York Fed says no applications are accepted after the deadline.
Two rounds of interviews in October and November, then offers in December (New York Fed timeline). In the last cycle, applicants on Reddit reported audit interviews in early November and research offers by mid-November.
1L Summer Law Clerk applications for summer 2027 expected to open in January, filled on a rolling basis; most years the class is full by mid-February.
Ten weeks from early June, full time on site in New York or Chicago. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open in early September 2027 and close in early October 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The New York Fed runs a hard deadline, not rolling review. Each posting states its cutoff to the minute, the bank's timeline says no applications are accepted after it, and the Workday posting comes down the next day. On 3 October the closed sophomore Audit posting already returned a closed status from Workday's API while the junior and graduate postings were still live.
Because each business area is a separate posting, a strong application is tailored to one area's duties and tools. That takes longer than a generic submission, so start on the first day of the September 2027 window rather than in its last week.
Which New York Fed Internship Programs Should You Target?
You apply to a business area within a program, not to the bank as a whole. Here's where each program stands as of 6 October 2026.
| Program | Who it's for | Business areas (summer 2027) | Pay basis and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sophomore Career Exploration | Graduating Winter 2028 to Spring 2029 | 12 areas incl. Audit, Risk, Statistics, Research, Supervision, Technology, Legal & Compliance | $65,600 annual basis; closed 28 Sep 2026 |
| Junior Summer Analyst | Graduating Winter 2027 to Spring 2028 | Audit, Markets (New York and Chicago), Research, Executive Office, People & Engagement, Supervision, Technology | $72,100 New York, $63,400 Chicago; closed 5 Oct 2026 |
| Graduate Summer Associate | Finished first year of graduate study | Markets (New York, Chicago, New York Innovation Center), People & Engagement, Supervision | $94,900 New York, $83,500 Chicago; closed 5 Oct 2026 |
| 1L Summer Law Clerk | First-year law students only | Legal Function | $94,900 annualized (2026); expected ~Jan to mid-Feb 2027 |
| PhD Summer Internship | Economics and finance PhD students, usually at the dissertation stage | Research Group | Paid, amount not published; summer-2027 dates not yet announced |
First-years can attend Freshman Discovery Day, a one-hour webinar held in May, before the sophomore window. Law and PhD details are on the 1L clerk and PhD internship pages.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The rules are set per program and per posting:
• Class year: juniors must expect to graduate between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028; sophomores between Winter 2028 and Spring 2029. The graduate program is for students who have finished their first year of graduate study.
• Citizenship and status: 10 of the 13 summer-2027 junior and graduate postings required access to confidential supervisory or FOMC information, which is limited to US citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3) and certain other nonimmigrants, who must sign a declaration of intent to become a permanent resident and then a citizen.
• GPA: no number is stated; the postings ask for a strong academic record.
• Work model: full time, on site with your team. Summer housing isn't provided.
• 1L law clerks: first-year law students only, and US citizens or applicants who have applied or will apply for citizenship before starting.

Can International Students Apply?
Some can, depending on the posting. The confidential-information clause in most postings limits those roles to citizens, permanent residents and certain protected individuals, so most international students on F-1 visas won't qualify for them. Three of this cycle's postings (the two People & Engagement roles and the Markets Group's New York Innovation Center graduate role) didn't carry that clause.
Read the clause on the exact posting you want before you apply. A 2020 Reddit thread shows how much confusion exists here, with students unsure whether any Fed internship was open to them.
What Skills Does the New York Fed Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Every junior and graduate posting asks for written and verbal communication, analytical and critical thinking, curiosity, teamwork and a passion for public service, and nearly all add Microsoft Office. The technical asks depend on the area: Python or R in 9 of 13, SQL in 8, Tableau or other visualization in 6, and Stata, MATLAB or SAS for Research. Markets interns prepare charts and tables for market monitoring; Technology interns code, test and manage data.
Supervision goes out of its way to invite candidates of all backgrounds, including liberal arts, so a non-quant major isn't ruled out of every area.

How Is Demand for Finance Interns Moving Right Now?
Finance intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 336 in August
Most finance employers opened their summer-2027 roles in September, the same month as the New York Fed, so the first week of September is the season to have your materials ready.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (60 postings in September, 57 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship you can finish before the summer-2028 window opens in September 2027.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Markets and financial analysis | Markets Group junior: "Prepare charts, tables, graphs and other supporting documentation" for market monitoring | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| SQL and data management | Markets Group postings: Excel and SQL for data work, with Python a plus | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Data analysis and visualization | Markets Group postings: Tableau for data visualization | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Technology and security | Technology Group junior: "coding software, testing code, preparing and managing data" | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Strategy and operations | Executive Office, Strategy & Operating Services junior | Corporate Strategy, mentored by Eric Ries |
Match the Externship to the business area you'll target, and finish it before September so the project is on the application you submit in week one.
What Is the New York Fed Application and Interview Process Like?
The New York Fed publishes a simple timeline for its undergraduate and graduate programs:
1. Apply on Workday. Applications must go through the Federal Reserve Workday board; each business area is its own posting.
2. Deadline. Early October; no applications are accepted after it.
3. Interviews. Selected students hear from the Early Careers team and are scheduled for two rounds of interviews in October and November.
4. Offers. Offers go out in December.
5. Summer program. Ten weeks from early June in one business area, with a cohort, a mentor and senior-leader learning events.
Last cycle, an audit applicant on Reddit was told to expect some technical questions and thought there was only one round; the bank's own timeline says two, so prepare for both.
What Students on Reddit Say
Applicants have posted about the New York Fed's interview and offer timing across several cycles:
In mid-November 2025, a junior research applicant reported work offers from three teams the week before, while another had finished a second-round interview about two weeks earlier and was still waiting. That fits the bank's October-to-November interview window.
A summer-2026 audit intern candidate, an ex-Big 4 audit intern, was told there might be technical questions. Interviews ran around 5 to 7 November 2025, and one candidate said theirs went okay and that they leaned on lots of specific experiences.
Back in 2020, students compared Fed internship timelines and found each Reserve Bank and the Board running its own calendar. One sophomore had already been turned down by the New York program about a month before late November.
How Do You Stand Out for a New York Fed Internship?
Three moves, based on how the postings are written.
First, apply to a business area, not to "the Fed". Read the duties for Markets, Supervision, Research or Technology and mirror that area's tools on your resume, such as Excel, SQL and Tableau for Markets, or Stata and R for Research and Supervision.
Second, prepare a real answer on public service. Every posting asks for a passion for public service, and interviewers will expect to hear why a central bank appeals to you more than a private firm.
Third, start as a freshman. Freshman Discovery Day is the on-ramp to the sophomore program, and the sophomore window closes a week earlier than the junior one. The New York Fed doesn't publish class sizes or applicant numbers, so there's no acceptance rate to quote.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 New York Fed internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and summer 2027 has closed too: the sophomore window on 28 September 2026 and the junior and graduate windows on 5 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST. First-year law students can try the clerkship expected in January 2027; everyone else should plan for summer 2028, expected to open in early September 2027.
When do New York Fed applications open for summer 2028?
Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open in early September 2027 and close in early October 2027. The bank's own timeline shows that rhythm every year, the summer-2027 roles posted on 1 September 2026, and the sophomore page already says to check back in September 2027.
Are New York Fed internships paid?
Yes. Each posting gives an annual salary basis, paid only for the ten weeks you work: $65,600 for sophomores, $72,100 for juniors and $94,900 for graduate students in New York, and $63,400 or $83,500 for Chicago Markets roles. By our calculation, ten weeks at $72,100 is about $13,900 before tax.
Can international students apply for a New York Fed internship?
Only for some roles. Ten of the 13 summer-2027 junior and graduate postings required access to confidential supervisory or FOMC information, limited to US citizens, permanent residents and certain protected individuals. The People & Engagement and New York Innovation Center postings didn't carry that clause, so check each posting when the summer-2028 window opens.
What is the New York Fed interview process like?
After the early-October deadline, selected students hear from the Early Careers team and go through two rounds of interviews in October and November, with offers in December. Applicants on Reddit report interviews in early November and offers by mid-November in the last cycle.
Is there a New York Fed internship for freshmen?
Not an internship. First-years can attend Freshman Discovery Day, a one-hour virtual webinar held in May 2026, which introduces the programs. The first internship is the Sophomore Career Exploration Program, whose window opens in September of sophomore year and closes about a week before the junior one.
Does the New York Fed require a minimum GPA?
No minimum is stated in any of the summer-2027 postings. They ask for a strong academic record, along with communication, analytical thinking and a passion for public service. The more specific filters are your graduation window and, for most roles, the citizenship or permanent-residency requirement.
Does the New York Fed hire interns full time?
The bank doesn't publish a return-offer or conversion rate. Its student programs page routes seniors and recent graduates to early-career openings and the full-time Research Analyst program, which is where many interns would look for a permanent role after graduating.
With the next undergraduate window expected in early September 2027, you have most of a year to build proof. A remote Externship in markets, data or technology gives your summer-2028 application a finished project to point to.
