The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia recruits summer interns on a winter clock. Its internship brochure says intern postings are usually up by the end of December, recruiting runs January through March, and most interns start between late May and mid-July for 10 weeks at 40 hours a week. As of 3 October 2026, the Philadelphia Fed has no intern postings live on the Federal Reserve's shared jobs board, so its summer-2027 window hasn't opened yet. In plain words: you apply in late December 2026 or January 2027, you intern in summer 2027.
Individual postings can close fast: the bank's summer-2024 Writing Center internship was announced on 15 January with a 28 January cutoff. Recent postings paid $22 to $30 an hour depending on degree level.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks (range 4–11) at 5 to 10 hours a week, so one fits before the Philadelphia Fed's December postings. The ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics Externship builds the empirical, policy-facing data work the Community Development and research teams describe, and the Attronica FP&A and Private Company Valuation Externship practices the budgeting and financial analysis behind the Strategy, Risk, and Financial Management internships. What Is a Philadelphia Fed Internship?
A Philadelphia Fed internship is a paid, 10-week summer placement in one department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, open to full-time undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students. Interns report to a supervisor, start with an onboarding session on the bank's mission, and finish with a final reflection on what they accomplished.
The Philadelphia Fed is one of 12 regional Reserve Banks that, with the Board of Governors, make up the Federal Reserve System. It serves the Third District (eastern and central Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware), and its work spans monetary policy, bank supervision and financial services. Its brochure lists intern departments from Research and the Consumer Finance Institute to Supervision, Regulation, and Credit; Community Development and Regional Outreach; IT; Audit; Cash Services; and Legal. This guide covers the Philadelphia Fed only. The New York Fed and other Reserve Banks run their own programs on different calendars.

When Do Philadelphia Fed Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The Philadelphia Fed describes its own calendar: postings usually go up by the end of December, and resume review, phone screening, interviews and offers generally happen from January through March. Dated postings from recent cycles match that: the summer-2024 Writing Center internship was announced on 15 January 2024 with a 28 January deadline, and the summer-2026 Research IT internship was posted on 15 January 2026. That's a lead time of about five months from posting to a late-May start, much later than the New York Fed, which posted its summer-2027 roles on 1 September.
As of 3 October 2026, the Philadelphia Fed's six open postings on the shared Workday board are all full-time staff roles, and a summer-2026 intern posting returns a closed status. Applications for summer 2027 are expected to open around late December 2026 to mid-January 2027.
Applications aren't open yet; there are no Philadelphia Fed intern postings live. Other Reserve Banks do have summer-2027 intern roles on the same Federal Reserve board right now, so check the hiring bank on any listing you find. This is the window to build proof before the December postings.
Pick two or three departments, tailor a resume to each, and practice the tools recent postings name: R, Stata or Python for research and community development, AWS and Linux for Research IT.
Summer-2027 postings expected on the Federal Reserve Workday board. Each department posts its own requisition, and a past window lasted about two weeks, so check the Philadelphia Fed filter weekly and apply within days.
Resume review, phone screening, interviews and offer decisions for summer 2027, followed by a background investigation and drug test after an offer.
Ten consecutive weeks at 40 hours a week, starting between late May and mid-July 2027, with a supervisor, an onboarding session and a final reflection. Some departments let interns continue part time afterward.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The Philadelphia Fed doesn't run one program-wide deadline; each department's posting has its own window, and the evidence points to short ones. The summer-2024 Writing Center internship asked candidates to apply as soon as possible, by 28 January, about two weeks after it was announced. Recruiting then runs on a compressed January-to-March schedule, so a posting can fill before many students think to look.
Treat it as a short-window employer: check the Philadelphia Fed filter on the Workday board from mid-December, and apply in the first week a posting you want appears.
Which Philadelphia Fed Internship Programs Should You Target?
There's one internship program, but you apply department by department. These are the departments the bank lists, with recent example postings where they exist.
| Department | Example intern work | Recent pay (posting) | Summer 2027 status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community Development and Regional Outreach | Research on property-insurance costs, housing prices and access to credit; literature review, empirical analysis, report drafting | $22 undergrad, $26 grad, $30 Ph.D. (summer 2025) | Expected late Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 |
| Research IT | Supporting a cloud high-performance computing platform in AWS, onboarding users, troubleshooting code, data projects | $23 undergrad, $28 grad (summer 2026) | Expected late Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 |
| Supervision, Regulation, and Credit | Writing Center support for other interns (2024); Retail Consumer Credit Panel (2026) | Not published in the sources we found | Expected late Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 |
| Cash Services and Consumer Finance Institute | Dashboards of coin and currency volume; research on college financial distress (brochure accounts) | Not published | Expected late Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 |
| Strategy, Risk, and Financial Management; IT Services; Audit; Legal; HR | Budget process support, data and metrics reporting, training documentation, presentations for senior management | Not published | Expected late Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 |
The internships page also notes that some interns can continue part time after the summer or start at another time of year, depending on department needs.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The Philadelphia Fed's published requirements are broad:
• Enrollment: a full-time undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. student at an accredited four-year college or university.
• Academic record: a strong academic record; no GPA number is published.
• Fields: an interest in economics, business, finance, math, marketing, writing and editing, information technology, web and graphic design, or other fields relevant to the bank's work.
• Work authorization: the postings we checked ask you to provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and don't carry a citizenship-only clause.
• Background and ethics: offers are subject to a background investigation and drug test, and employees generally can't own securities of banks or their affiliates.
• Work model: on site or hybrid in Philadelphia; the summer-2026 Research IT posting was on site only.

Do the New York Fed's Citizenship Rules Apply Here?
Not as far as the postings show. Many New York Fed intern roles are limited to US citizens, permanent residents and certain protected individuals because they involve confidential supervisory or FOMC information. The Philadelphia Fed intern postings we read ask only for proof of US work authorization.
That's based on two recent postings, so read the work-authorization section of the specific requisition you apply to when the summer-2027 postings appear.
What Skills Does the Philadelphia Fed Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The Philadelphia Fed has no live intern postings to analyze, so this section draws on its two most recent intern requisitions and its own brochure. The summer-2025 Community Development posting asked for R, Stata or Python, experience with large housing or consumer-finance datasets, the ability to explain technical ideas to a general audience, and Microsoft Office. The summer-2026 Research IT posting asked for AWS tools (Glue, Athena, S3, EMR), Python, MATLAB, Stata or Julia, required Linux, and named troubleshooting, group collaboration and technical writing as soft skills.
The brochure adds department examples: building a dashboard of coin and currency volume, supporting the annual budget process, and preparing presentations for senior management.
Note: Skill chart not shown: the Philadelphia Fed has no live intern postings as of 3 October 2026, and only two recent intern requisitions (Community Development 2025, Research IT 2026) could be read in full, too few for a frequency chart. The skills above are quoted from those two postings and the bank's internship brochure; this section will add a chart when the summer-2027 postings appear.
How Is Demand for Finance Interns Moving Right Now?
Finance intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 336 in August
Most finance employers posted in September, so a Philadelphia Fed applicant can apply elsewhere this fall and still be ready when the bank's own postings appear around the end of December.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (60 postings in September, 57 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill below comes from a recent Philadelphia Fed posting or its brochure and maps to a remote Externship you can finish before the December postings.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Empirical analysis in R, Stata or Python | Community Development (2025): "Experience with or familiarity of programming languages such as R, Stata, or Python" | ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics |
| Data management and SQL | Research IT (2026): data-related projects and dataset work in AWS (Glue, Athena, S3) | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Budgeting and financial analysis | Strategy, Risk, and Financial Management (brochure): annual budget process support | Attronica FP&A and Private Company Valuation |
| Financial and economic modeling | Research; Supervision, Regulation, and Credit (intern departments listed in the brochure) | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| IT troubleshooting and security | Research IT (2026): "Strong troubleshooting skills are a must" | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
Choose the row that matches the department you'll target, and finish the project before mid-December so it's ready for a two-week posting window.
What Is the Philadelphia Fed Application and Interview Process Like?
The Philadelphia Fed's brochure and recent postings describe the process:
1. Watch the board. From mid-December, filter the Federal Reserve Workday board to the Philadelphia Fed; postings usually appear by the end of December.
2. Apply by department. Each department posts its own requisition, so apply to the specific roles that fit you.
3. Screening and interviews. Resume review, phone screening and interviews generally run from January through March.
4. Offer and checks. Offers are followed by a background investigation and drug test. The bank says it will only email you from its own domain or through Workday.
5. Summer program. Ten weeks starting between late May and mid-July, with a supervisor, onboarding and a final reflection.
Watch for mislabeled listings on job aggregators: in the last cycle, several sites labeled New York, St. Louis and Boston Fed internships as Philadelphia Fed roles. The hiring bank shown on the Federal Reserve board is the one to trust.
What Students on Reddit Say
We found no first-hand Philadelphia Fed intern threads on Reddit, so these cards share general Fed internship advice, one of them from a student whose first choice was Philadelphia.
An economics undergraduate whose first choice was the Philadelphia Fed asked how to land a Fed research internship. The advice: talk to professors who have worked with the Fed, read research coming out of the Philadelphia Fed and write a modest paper related to it, learn MATLAB, and also look at agencies like the FDIC and SEC.
A student weighing summer-2027 Fed internships was told that several groups across the System hire each year, from economic research to financial analytics, data science and community development, that grades are a primary filter, and that contacting a bank's internship coordinator is worth doing.
A graduating applicant to the Philadelphia Fed's entry-level Leadership Fellows Program applied in mid-January 2025 and was still showing under review in Workday in early February, a reminder that the bank's winter hiring takes a few weeks to move.
How Do You Stand Out for a Philadelphia Fed Internship?
Three moves that fit how the bank hires.
First, be early on a late calendar. Most students recruit in the fall; the Philadelphia Fed posts around the end of December, and windows can be about two weeks. Set a reminder for mid-December and check weekly through February.
Second, apply to a department, not to "the Fed". A Community Development application should show empirical work in R, Stata or Python; a Research IT application should show Linux and cloud tools.
Third, show you know the bank's work. Read recent Philadelphia Fed research or Community Development publications and mention one that connects to your own interests. The bank doesn't publish class sizes or applicant numbers, so there's no acceptance rate to quote.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Philadelphia Fed internship?
No. Summer 2026 recruiting ran from January to March 2026, and a summer-2026 intern posting now returns a closed status on the Federal Reserve board. Summer-2027 postings aren't up yet either; the bank usually posts by the end of December, so expect them around late December 2026 to mid-January 2027.
When do Philadelphia Fed internship applications open for summer 2027?
Applications for summer 2027 are expected to open around late December 2026 to mid-January 2027. The bank says postings usually go up by the end of December and that recruiting runs from January through March. As of 3 October 2026, no Philadelphia Fed intern postings were live.
Why do I see Philadelphia Fed internships listed online right now?
Most are other Reserve Banks' roles. All 12 Reserve Banks share one Workday board, and several aggregators have labeled New York, St. Louis and Boston Fed internships as Philadelphia Fed roles. On 3 October 2026, none of the intern postings on the board belonged to the Philadelphia Fed.
How much do Philadelphia Fed interns make?
Recent postings paid by the hour and by degree level. The summer-2025 Community Development internship paid $22 for undergraduates, $26 for graduate students and $30 for Ph.D. students, and the summer-2026 Research IT internship paid $23 and $28. Summer-2027 rates will appear in the new postings.
How long is the Philadelphia Fed internship?
Ten consecutive weeks at 40 hours a week. Most interns start between late May and mid-July. Some departments let interns continue part time after the summer or start at a different time of year, depending on their needs, according to the bank's internships page.
Who can apply for a Philadelphia Fed internship?
Full-time undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students at an accredited four-year college or university with a strong academic record and an interest in fields such as economics, finance, math, IT, writing or design. The postings we checked required proof of US work authorization.
Is the Philadelphia Fed internship remote?
Mostly not. Recent postings were on site or hybrid in Philadelphia, and the summer-2026 Research IT internship was on site only, although the summer-2024 Writing Center role offered hybrid or remote work. Check the work arrangement on each posting when the summer-2027 roles appear.
What if I'm graduating before summer 2027?
Look at the Philadelphia Fed's entry-level Leadership Fellows Program, a rotational program for new graduates, and at Research Assistant openings; one Research Assistant role was live on the bank's board on 3 October 2026. The bank doesn't publish an intern conversion rate.
With the Philadelphia Fed's postings expected around the end of December, you have about ten weeks to build proof. A remote Externship in research, data or finance gives your application a finished project to point to.
