Freddie Mac Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Deadlines & How to Apply

Last updated: August 2026

Freddie Mac runs a 10-week summer internship across eight business groups, and it pays every undergraduate intern the same set, non-negotiable $32 an hour. And that identical rate appears in its Internal Audit, Technology, Capital Markets, Single-Family Data, Single-Family Software and Multifamily Business requisitions. Graduate interns are paid $40/hr. The whole program sits in one place, McLean, Virginia, inside a government-sponsored enterprise that reported $3.8 billion of net income in Q2 2026 and holds a $3.7 trillion total mortgage portfolio. As of August 2026 the summer-2027 intern cycle hasn't opened yet. The only "Summer 2027 Intern" posting on the board is an administrative placeholder used to process return offers, not something you can apply to.

But the full-time University wave opened this month, and a live info session on 27 August 2026 signals the intern reqs are days to weeks away.

What Is a Freddie Mac Internship?

A Freddie Mac internship is a paid, 10-week placement in McLean, Virginia inside the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, a government-sponsored enterprise chartered by Congress in 1970 that operates in the US secondary mortgage market. Freddie Mac isn't a bank (it doesn't originate loans) and it isn't a federal agency (its employees aren't federal employees). Since its charter it has made home possible for more than 90 million families.

And the program won RippleMatch's Campus Forward Award in 2024 and 2022, and interns rotate across functions including Capital Markets, Single-Family, Multifamily, Technology, Risk Management, Internal Audit and Finance.

When Do Freddie Mac Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Freddie Mac publishes its own recruiting calendar: positions open in "July, August and December." Last cycle, every summer-2026 intern requisition carried the same absolute cutoff, 13 October 2025, and the internships started in May 2026, roughly 9 to 10 months after the window opened. The summer-2027 intern cycle hasn't started yet as of August 2026, but the full-time University wave has already opened and two info sessions ran this month.

So where does that leave you? The intern reqs are expected any day now, with a closing date around mid-October 2026.

Now · August 2026YOU ARE HERE

Freddie Mac's summer-2027 intern cycle is pre-open. The only "Summer 2027 Intern" posting is an administrative placeholder for return offers (JR17434), not an outside application. But the full-time University wave opened this month, a live info session runs 27 August 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT, and a second session (Internship Program Spotlight) already ran on 11 August. Join the Talent Community now for alerts, register for the session, and use these weeks to build proof.

Late August to September 2026EXPECTED

Summer-2027 intern applications expected to open. Freddie Mac says positions open in "July, August and December." Pick a function before you apply, because Freddie Mac posts separate requisitions for Capital Markets, Single-Family Data, Single-Family Software, Technology, Multifamily and Internal Audit. Each names its own tools and skills.

~Mid-October 2026EXPECTED

HARD DEADLINE, expected around mid-October 2026. Last cycle every summer-2026 intern requisition closed on 13 October 2025, one shared date across all functions. The full-time analyst reqs live right now carry 16 October 2026. Miss this date and there's no route in until the December wave. But seats can fill before the cutoff. Freddie Mac says "most opportunities are filled during the fall."

September to November 2026EXPECTED

Pre-recorded virtual interview (round 1), then team interview. Freddie Mac's own steps: a pre-recorded video you submit, not a live call, followed by a team interview where leaders want to hear about coursework and projects. Offers land October to November. A second, smaller December wave exists with interviews in January–February and offers in March.

May 2027

10-week internship starts. Mentor and buddy programs, a project or case study presented to division leadership, plus Freddie Mac-sponsored AWS Cloud Practitioner coursework and exam for technology interns. Freddie Mac posts a dedicated return-offer requisition every year; the named next steps are the Technology Analyst Program (12 months), the Capital Markets and Finance rotational programs (2 years), and the Enterprise Graduate Risk Rotation (2 years).

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Freddie Mac doesn't use rolling review. It prints an absolute closing date inside each requisition, and last cycle every summer-2026 intern posting shared the same cutoff: 13 October 2025. And the full-time analyst reqs open right now carry 16 October 2026.

So the deadline is real and published. Miss it and there's no route in until the December wave.

But here's the honest counterweight, from Freddie Mac's own recruiting blog: "Most opportunities are filled during the fall, but we continue to recruit until all positions are filled." What does that mean for you? The cutoff is a backstop, not a plan. So applying in week one gives you the fullest set of seats, because offers start landing in October and November while the window is still open.

Which Freddie Mac Internship Programs Should You Target?

Freddie Mac doesn't run named, branded programs the way a bank runs a "Summer Analyst Program." It runs one University program with function-specific requisitions underneath it, split across two entry points (intern and full-time analyst) and eleven named disciplines. Which one should you target? The one whose tools you already know: Capital Markets names SQL, SAS, Python and R; Single-Family Software wants Java and Angular/Springboot; Internal Audit wants controls and governance.

Program / TrackFocusDurationKey Skills
Capital Markets InternRotate across mortgage capital-markets desks: Front-End (loan pricing, pool securitization, unsecured debt funding, Cash Window) or Credit Risk (STACR, ACIS, Servicing Capital Markets, Loan Portfolio Management & Structuring)10 weeksFixed-income valuation; advanced Excel, SQL, SAS, Python, R; comfort on a trading floor
Single-Family Data InternData analysis, lineage and governance across the loan lifecycle; credit-risk performance monitoring; executive reporting10 weeksPython, SQL, R or SAS on large data sets; UAT testing; user stories; data controls

Technology Intern (EO+T)Split across Software Development / Application Support and Cyber (security event detection, triage, escalation, IOC analysis)10 weeksJava, C/C++, Python; Agile; AWS Cloud Practitioner coursework and exam sponsored by Freddie Mac
Multifamily Business InternPlaced in Asset Management & Operations, Operational Risk, Production & Sales, or Underwriting & Credit; ends in a team case-study presentation to division leadership10 weeksRisk analysis; deal execution; loan accounting; research and modeling; securitization
Internal Audit InternHigh-impact audit projects assessing risk management, governance and controls; present recommendations to management10 weeksAccounting/audit fundamentals; analytical problem solving; written and verbal communication

See the full list on the official internships page. Graduate students should look at the Risk Management Graduate Intern track ($40/hr, three months), which feeds the two-year Enterprise Graduate Risk Rotation in credit, market and model risk.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Freddie Mac's eligibility gates are unusually specific on work authorization and unusually silent on GPA:

Work authorization: candidates "must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction." F-1, J-1 and M-1 visas are named and excluded; H-1B sponsorship is named and excluded. But there's no US citizenship requirement. Permanent residents and anyone else with unrestricted authorization are eligible. Being a government-sponsored enterprise doesn't make Freddie Mac a federal employer.

Graduation window: summer-2026 interns had to be graduating December 2026 or May 2027, so the summer-2027 class should target students graduating December 2027 or May 2028, effectively rising seniors.

Degree fields: Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Economics, Business Administration, Risk Management, Information Security, Real Estate, Marketing, Communications, Engineering, Public Policy, Law and more. The official Students page lists 11 disciplines.

GPA: Freddie Mac publishes no GPA requirement at all. Across twelve intern and University analyst requisitions, none states a minimum or preference. The gate is your graduation date and your degree field, not your GPA.

Overhead close-up of a neatly arranged desk with a printed spreadsheet, a calculator, a coffee mug with steam rising, a

Is Freddie Mac a Federal Employer? Does It Require Citizenship?

No, and this is the most common misconception about Freddie Mac hiring. Freddie Mac is a congressionally chartered, shareholder-owned corporation, not a federal agency. It's been in FHFA conservatorship since 2008 and remains there as of August 2026, but conservatorship doesn't import federal-employment rules. No requisition mentions citizenship, security clearance or federal hiring. The sponsorship exclusion is real (Freddie Mac says so in plain English on its Students page); a citizenship requirement isn't.

So if your work authorization has any employer- or program-dependent condition attached, assume no and confirm with the recruiter.

What Skills Does Freddie Mac Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

What does Freddie Mac actually look for? Twelve requisitions, seven intern JDs from the 2026 cycle plus five live 2027-cycle University analyst reqs, repeat one profile with unusual consistency. Teamwork and cross-team collaboration appear in all twelve.

And written and verbal communication appear in eleven.

But the most interesting finding sits at the bottom of the chart: AI literacy shows up in five of the five live 2027-cycle analyst reqs and zero of the seven 2026 intern JDs. In one cycle Freddie Mac went from zero AI language to naming its internal chatbot (FredAI), asking for prompt engineering, and requiring candidates to "validate AI-generated responses before using them." That's a brand-new ask, and it's the kind of thing a student can prepare for.

Method: full-text analysis of 12 Freddie Mac requisitions: 7 function-specific summer-2026 intern job descriptions (Internal Audit, Technology, Capital Markets, Single-Family Data, Single-Family Software Development, Multifamily Business, Risk Management Graduate) read in full and projected forward to summer 2027, plus 5 University full-time analyst requisitions live on Freddie Mac’s own board in August 2026. Freddie Mac had no applicant-facing intern posting live on 15 August 2026; its only “Summer 2027 Intern” requisition is an administrative posting used to process return offers, so live-posting data couldn’t carry the chart. Cohort caveat on the AI row: AI literacy appears in 5 of the 5 live 2027-cycle analyst requisitions and 0 of the 7 summer-2026 intern requisitions, so it's a brand-new ask this cycle rather than a stable 42% baseline. Soft-skill weighting caveat: Freddie Mac’s University requisitions lean unusually hard on collaboration and communication language, which pushes the technical asks lower on the chart than they sit in practice.

How Is Demand for Finance and Capital Markets Interns Moving Right Now?

Freddie Mac pays well above the market. Its published $32/hr is roughly 50% above the aggregate finance-intern benchmark, and $40/hr for graduate interns sits even higher. AI appears in just 4% of aggregate postings, but in 5 of 5 live Freddie Mac reqs

August 2026 is the baseline month for this tracker. The early signal: intern-level demand is climbing about 4x faster than the all-levels market, which is the summer-2027 campus wave opening in real time. Freddie Mac's own full-time reqs opening this month are the same event seen from one employer's board.

These Externships don't teach the secondary mortgage market (Extern has no housing-finance program in the active catalog).

But what they build is the adjacent, documented proof Freddie Mac's requisitions actually reward: analysis you can explain, AI output you can validate, and a project you presented.

What Is the Freddie Mac Application and Interview Process Like?

Freddie Mac publishes its own four-step process, which is rare and worth quoting:

1. Apply to a specific requisition at careers.freddiemac.com. There's no single umbrella application, so pick your function. Freddie Mac's own tip: "consider each one carefully… be open to all the roles available" while staying "true to your passions." Positions open in July, August and December.

2. Pre-recorded virtual interview (round 1). You'll complete a pre-recorded video, not a live conversation. Students report the platform as HireVue (earlier cycles used Wepow). A Talent Advisor leads the process. Timing: August–September in the fall wave, January in the spring wave.

3. Team interview. You interview with the hiring team to show how your skills match the role. Freddie Mac's own tip: leaders don't expect work experience and want you to speak to "related coursework, projects or initiatives you've contributed to or led." Timing: September–October; February in the spring wave. Students report this round running roughly 25–30 minutes and skewing behavioral rather than technical.

4. Offer. You'll hear from a Talent Advisor. Timing: October–November; March in the spring wave.

And there's no coding online assessment. The recorded video is what Freddie Mac uses instead, and it's the step most candidates don't rehearse. Prep with the official "What to Expect" guide: research the business model, the mission ("Making Home Possible"), and what a GSE actually does.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three threads, from the applicant side.

Local students describe Freddie Mac as slow to move, with reqs opening late August to early September and the program hiring on the order of 250 interns across roughly 11 departments.

How Do You Stand Out at Freddie Mac?

Three moves, starting with function specificity. Freddie Mac posts separate requisitions for Capital Markets, Single-Family Data, Single-Family Software Development, Technology, Multifamily and Internal Audit, and each names its own tools. The Capital Markets req names SQL, SAS, Python, R and asks whether you're "comfortable working in a fast-paced trading floor environment." So can a generic finance resume compete? Not well.

Second, rehearse the recorded interview, because it's round one. Most candidates prepare for a conversation and get a camera and a timer instead. Freddie Mac's own tip: research the business model and the mission. "Making Home Possible" is a real mechanism (buying loans on the secondary market so lenders can lend again), so explaining what a GSE actually does is a live differentiator.

And third, show you can use AI tools and check their output. This cycle Freddie Mac's University reqs started asking for prompt engineering and for "AI literacy, including understanding prompting techniques and validating AI-generated responses before using them," and they named the internal chatbot FredAI. A project where you used an AI tool and can describe how you verified its output now maps directly onto a stated requirement that didn't exist in last year's postings.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

Freddie Mac's true functional counterpart is Fannie Mae (the other congressionally chartered mortgage GSE, also in FHFA conservatorship). The peers below sit in the same Diversified Financials category; the differentiators are contrasts, not equivalences.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Freddie Mac internship?

No. Every summer-2026 Freddie Mac intern requisition closed on 13 October 2025, and that class started in May 2026. As of August 2026 the only "Summer 2027 Intern" posting on Freddie Mac's board is an administrative one used to process return offers for current interns. The next open cycle is summer 2027.

When do Freddie Mac internship applications open for summer 2027?

Expected around late August to September 2026, roughly nine to ten months before a May 2027 start. Freddie Mac says its university positions open in July, August and December. Applications are expected to close around mid-October 2026, projected from last cycle's 13 October cutoff.

Are Freddie Mac internships rolling?

No. Freddie Mac prints an absolute closing date inside each requisition, and every posting in a wave shares it: 13 October 2025 for the summer-2026 interns, 16 October 2026 on the full-time analyst roles live now. Freddie Mac does keep recruiting until roles fill, so seats can go before the date.

Does Freddie Mac sponsor visas or require US citizenship?

Freddie Mac doesn't sponsor and doesn't hire students on F-1, J-1 or M-1 visas, but it doesn't require citizenship either. Its own wording: candidates "must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction." And being a government-sponsored enterprise doesn't make it a federal employer.

How much do Freddie Mac interns get paid?

Undergraduate interns are paid a set, non-negotiable $32 an hour, the same rate across audit, technology, capital markets, data and multifamily roles. Graduate interns are paid $40 an hour. Over a 10-week summer that's roughly $12,800 before taxes. And Freddie Mac publishes no intern housing or relocation benefit.

What GPA does Freddie Mac require for an internship?

Freddie Mac publishes no GPA requirement. Across twelve intern and university analyst requisitions reviewed, none states a GPA minimum or preference. The published gate is your graduation date instead: summer-2026 interns had to be graduating December 2026 or May 2027, so summer-2027 interns should expect a December 2027 or May 2028 window.

What is the Freddie Mac intern interview process like?

Four steps that Freddie Mac publishes itself: you apply to a specific requisition, complete a pre-recorded virtual interview, then interview with the hiring team, then hear from a Talent Advisor. There's no coding online assessment. And students report the recorded round about one to two weeks after applying.

Where are Freddie Mac internships located, and are they remote?

All of them are in McLean, Virginia, across Freddie Mac's four-building headquarters campus, and they're fully on-site five days a week. Freddie Mac's own job board states the in-office expectation. Interns were on a three-day hybrid schedule as recently as summer 2025, so this is a recent change.

The deadline is a date, not a feeling: mid-October 2026, expected, same shape as last cycle's 13 October cutoff. Between now and then, build the proof Freddie Mac's new requisitions reward: a finished project, an AI tool you used and verified, and a clear answer to "what does a GSE actually do?" A remote Externship turns that preparation into a deliverable a week-one application can point at.
