Last updated: October 2026

Northern Trust's summer 2027 internship applications are open right now, and they close on 9 October 2026 at 11:59pm Central, "unless the class is filled before that date." That second clause is already biting: as of 3 October 2026, 10 of the 15 summer-2027 tracks posted around 1 September are still live on Northern Trust's campus Workday board, while five (Software Engineering, Data Science and Analytics, Information Security, Asset Management Enablement and Audit) have already closed. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. Interns spend ten weeks, early June to mid-August, mostly in Chicago, at $30 to $35 an hour according to the postings, and the program feeds Northern Trust's analyst hiring: 82% of the 94 campus analysts it hired in 2025 had interned there first.

What Is a Northern Trust Internship?

A Northern Trust internship is a paid, ten-week summer program at the Chicago-based wealth management and asset servicing bank, running from early June to mid-August. Founded in 1889 and listed on Nasdaq as NTRS, Northern Trust has more than 24,000 employees, whom it calls "partners," according to its requisition boilerplate. Interns join a specific team (Wealth Management, Asset Servicing, Credit, the Enterprise Chief Operations Office, Risk and Compliance, or Technology), and a recruiter works out the placement from your interests and experience. Around the day job, the program adds Lunch & Learns with senior leaders, a cross-functional intern project you present at the end, a volunteer event and mentoring. It's also the main route into the Analyst Development Program: in 2025, 82% of that program's 94 campus hires had interned at Northern Trust first.

When Do Northern Trust Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Northern Trust runs one main window a year, and it's short. The summer 2027 requisitions went live around 1 September 2026 (the Risk and Compliance req on 15 September) and close on 9 October 2026, about nine months before the internship starts. Last year looked almost identical: Northern Trust's campus page in October 2025 set the summer 2026 close at 10 October 2025. A one-day shift in a year is a stable calendar, so expect applications for summer 2028 to open around early September 2027 and close around early October 2027.

Now · early October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now, but only until 9 October. Still live as of 3 October: Wealth Management (Chicago, and a second req covering New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston and Phoenix), WM Digital Client and Partner Experience, Asset Servicing, Credit, Enterprise COO Office (Chicago, Tempe, Boston), Risk and Compliance, and Technology Infrastructure and IT Management. Already closed: Software Engineering, Data Science and Analytics, Information Security, Asset Management Enablement and Audit.

Apply first, then build proof for the interview: the Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship gives you market research to talk about, and the Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis Externship gives you a data project to point at.
9 October 2026, 11:59pm CentralHARD DEADLINE

Posting close for every remaining summer 2027 track, or earlier if a class fills. Each applicant can submit to a maximum of three postings per recruitment season in North America, and the postings ask you not to create extra email addresses to get around that.

Review and offers for summer 2027. Northern Trust doesn't publish an interview timeline. One community data point from the previous cycle: a sophomore posted on Reddit holding a Northern Trust Wealth Management Digital intern offer by late November 2024.

Summer 2027

The internship itself: ten weeks from early June to mid-August, with a cross-functional project presentation near the end. Strong interns are the main pipeline for the Analyst Development Program, which drew 82% of its 2025 campus hires from former interns.

September to October 2027EXPECTED

Missed 9 October? Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around early September 2027 and close around early October 2027, based on the last two cycles (closes on 10 October 2025 and 9 October 2026).

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard deadline, and the tracks can close before it. The postings say applications are "reviewed on a rolling basis" and "programs will close once positions are filled," and that's exactly what happened this cycle: Asset Management Enablement and Audit had shut by 27 September, and Software Engineering, Data Science and Analytics and Information Security were gone by 3 October, all before the 9 October close. Northern Trust's own Workday API returns a "permission denied" code for each of those five, the signature of a req that existed and was taken down, while the other ten still return full postings.

So the advice is plain. If you're eligible and interested, apply this week, not on 8 October. And because you only get three applications this season, rank the live tracks by fit before you click submit.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Every live summer 2027 posting repeats the same hard gates, so check these before you spend one of your three applications:

• Class year: pursuing a bachelor's degree with expected graduation between December 2027 and summer 2028, which in practice means rising seniors. The Infrastructure and IT Management track also accepts master's students.

• GPA: a 3.0 minimum, stated in all ten live postings.

• Majors: most business tracks don't restrict majors. Risk and Compliance lists finance, economics, data science, AI, MIS, business, math and computer science; Infrastructure wants MIS, information systems or IT; WM Digital prefers information systems, business, finance or economics.

• Work authorization: you must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future. The postings rule out employment-based sponsorship including F-1 OPT and CPT.

• Application cap: a maximum of three postings per recruitment season in North America.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

Treat it as one. The 3.0 floor sits in the "Who you are" list of every live posting, next to the graduation window and the work-authorization rule, and Northern Trust gives no exception language. What the postings don't do is ask for prior finance experience. They ask for proven analytical and problem-solving skills "through coursework and/or previous internship experience," plus leadership and teamwork shown through projects and extracurriculars. So a 3.4 with a strong club or project story is a real application, even without a finance internship behind it.

Question 1 of 6

Which summer are you applying for?

Recruiting timelines differ by class year, so we compare you with the right group.

Which group is your school closest to?

Firms recruit on campus in tiers. We match you against admits from schools like yours.

Math and statistics count too. Major is not a hard filter, but it shifts how much your coursework has to prove.

Question 4 of 6

How many internships, externships or research positions have you held so far?

Count anything with a real employer, mentor or principal investigator attached. Retail and food service do not count.

Question 5 of 6

Question 6 of 6

Are you in a finance club, investment fund or case competition team?

Campus clubs are how most admits get their first deal and modelling reps.

What Skills Does Northern Trust Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The ten live postings share a common core and then split by track. Every one asks for analytical, data interpretation and problem-solving skills, leadership and teamwork shown through projects, and curiosity about financial markets. The track-specific asks are more useful for planning:

• Operations and asset servicing: Net Asset Value reporting and calculations, resolving processing inquiries, and making servicing processes more efficient (Enterprise COO and Asset Servicing reqs).

• Wealth Management and Credit: market research, investment reviews for clients, credit analysis and underwriting.

• Risk, digital and technology: dashboards and metrics on risk data, data analysis and visualization, and on the Infrastructure track "some automation via coding" plus "the use or development of some generative AI capabilities."

Most finance postings for summer 2027 went up in September. Northern Trust's close on 9 October is early in that wave, so treat it as a now-or-next-year decision rather than something to circle back to in spring.

With the deadline this close, the realistic play is to apply now and start one of these in parallel, so you have a finished project to describe if Northern Trust calls you in.

What Is the Northern Trust Application and Interview Process Like?

Northern Trust publishes how to apply but not its intern interview format, so this is what the postings themselves confirm:

1. Choose up to three tracks. The cap is three postings per North American recruitment season. Rank the ten live tracks by fit and location before you start.

2. Apply on Workday by 9 October 2026, 11:59pm Central. Use the campus board. The same reqs also appear on the main Northern Trust board, so don't apply twice to one role.

3. Rolling review. Applications are reviewed as they arrive, and a track closes once its class is filled, which is why five already have.

4. Interviews. Northern Trust doesn't publish the intern interview rounds, and we couldn't find a first-hand intern account of them, so prepare for standard behavioral questions about your analytical work, teamwork and interest in wealth management or asset servicing.

5. Placement and offer. "A recruiter will work with you to determine the best team placement," the postings say. Offers in the previous cycle were showing up by late November, per one Reddit post.

We've kept the interview step general on purpose, because a guess dressed up as a process would hurt you more than help. If you get a first-round invite, our HireVue interview question guide is a reasonable warm-up for behavioral formats.

What Students on Reddit Say

Intern-specific threads are thin, but a few first-hand posts are worth reading, mostly about offers, pay growth and culture.

A college sophomore weighing a PwC offer against a Northern Trust Wealth Management Digital Client and Partner Experience internship already had both offers in hand by late November 2024, and wondered how easy it is to move between teams later.

A current Wealth Management employee says the pension starts vesting right away, bonuses land in February, and merit raises are small, so real pay growth tends to come from moving to a new role inside the firm.

Several commenters describe good work-life balance and generous time off, but the recurring caveat is that experience varies a lot by department, and a couple say pay isn't top of market.

How Do You Stand Out for a Northern Trust Internship?

Three moves matter more than polish here.

First, spend your three applications well. Pick tracks where your coursework already lines up: a data-heavy major fits WM Digital or Risk, an accounting or finance student fits the Enterprise COO Office's NAV work, and a sales-minded student fits Wealth Management. Three scattered applications read weaker than three that tell one story.

Second, talk about wealth management and asset servicing, not investment banking. Northern Trust's businesses are wealth management, asset servicing, asset management and banking. Knowing what a custodian does, or what a Net Asset Value calculation is for, separates you from applicants who treat it as a generic bank. Using its own language helps too: employees are "partners," and its principles are Service, Expertise and Integrity.

Third, bring one finished analytical project. Every posting asks for analytical and data interpretation skills proven "through coursework and/or previous internship experience." A concrete project with a number in it answers that better than a list of courses.

Northern Trust doesn't publish an intern return-offer rate, but 82% of its 94 campus analyst hires in 2025 were former interns, so the internship is the main door into a full-time role.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Northern Trust internship?

No. Summer 2026 applications closed on 10 October 2025. What's open now is summer 2027: as of 3 October 2026, ten tracks are accepting applications until 9 October 2026 at 11:59pm Central, while Software Engineering, Data Science and Analytics, Information Security, Asset Management Enablement and Audit have already closed.

When do Northern Trust summer 2027 internship applications close?

They close on 9 October 2026 at 11:59pm Central, or earlier if a class fills. Five tracks have already closed early this cycle. If you miss it, applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around early September 2027 and close around early October 2027.

Are Northern Trust internships rolling?

Yes, review is rolling, but there's also a hard close. The postings say applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and that programs close once positions are filled. That's why applying in the first days matters more than the official 9 October deadline for some tracks.

What GPA do you need for a Northern Trust internship?

You need at least a 3.0. Every live summer 2027 posting lists a 3.0 minimum GPA alongside the graduation window of December 2027 to summer 2028. Northern Trust doesn't offer exception language, so treat 3.0 as a firm cutoff rather than a suggestion.

How much do Northern Trust interns get paid?

Interns earn $30 to $35 an hour, according to the 2027 postings. Most business tracks list $30 an hour, Risk and Compliance lists $30 to $35, and the Infrastructure and WM Digital tracks list $35. At 40 hours a week over ten weeks, that's roughly $12,000 to $14,000 before tax.

Does Northern Trust sponsor visas for interns?

No. The postings require US work authorization without sponsorship now or in the future, and they explicitly rule out employment-based sponsorship including F-1 OPT and CPT. International students who need any form of sponsorship can't be considered for these North American internships.

How many Northern Trust internships can I apply to?

You can apply to three. Each applicant gets a maximum of three job postings per recruitment season in North America, and the postings ask candidates not to create extra email addresses to apply to more. Rank the live tracks by fit and location before you submit any of them.

Do Northern Trust interns get full-time offers?

Many do, though the rate isn't published. Northern Trust reports that 82% of the 94 analysts it hired from campus in 2025 had interned there first. That describes where its analysts came from, not the share of interns who received offers, so treat it as a strong pipeline signal.

Northern Trust's summer 2027 window shuts on 9 October 2026, so apply first. Then use the months before interviews and the summer 2028 cycle to build something you can show: a remote Externship gives you a finished project in about 8 weeks.
