CME Group Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Deadlines & How to Apply
Last updated: August 2026
CME Group runs over 100 internships a year across ten divisions, at a company of only ~3,875 employees worldwide. That's roughly one intern seat for every 39 permanent staff, at the exchange that cleared a record 28.1 million contracts a day in 2025. And here's what matters right now: CME's technology internships open about nine months before the internship starts, so the summer-2027 window is expected around early September 2026. CME is already collecting summer-2027 technology interest on WayUp.

CME Group recruits on two calendars: technology roles open in the fall (expected ~early Sep 2026 for summer 2027) and close in roughly four to five weeks; every other track opens in early winter or early spring (~Dec 2026 – Apr 2027). Applications are rolling with no published deadline, so apply the week yours posts.
Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project with a real company. The Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship builds the derivatives and market-analysis literacy that 6 of 12 CME intern reqs ask for, and the Beats by Dre Data Analytics Externship turns SQL and Tableau into a finished deliverable. Explore all Externships.
What Is a CME Group Internship?
A CME Group internship is a paid placement at the world's leading derivatives exchange operator, not a trading firm and not a bank. CME runs four exchanges (CME, CBOT, NYMEX, COMEX) plus CME Clearing, BrokerTec and EBS. It posted record annual revenue of $6.5 billion in 2025, its fourth consecutive record year.
So what does a $6.5 billion exchange need from interns? Tracks span software engineering, data science, quantitative risk, clearing, audit, corporate finance, products, and marketing.
But on Reddit, students weigh CME against Target, Geico, Capital One and Schwab, never against Citadel or Jump. That tells you what the culture is: large-corporate market infrastructure, not a prop shop.

When Do CME Group Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
CME Group runs two recruiting calendars, and its own Early Careers: Americas page says so plainly: "Recruiting for all technology-based internships begins in the fall for opportunities for the following summer. Recruiting for all other internships begins in early winter/early spring for opportunities the following summer." The summer-2026 software engineering req was live by mid-September 2025 and delisted by 9 October, roughly four to five weeks.
So when do summer-2027 applications open? Technology around early September 2026; everything else around December 2026 to April 2027.
And applications are rolling, with no published deadline anywhere.
Summer-2027 requisitions haven't posted yet, but CME is already collecting summer-2027 technology interest on WayUp. And two US intern requisitions are live right now: Corporate Tax Intern – Year Round in Chicago (posted 29 Jul 2026) and Quant Risk Management Intern – Year Round in New York (open 124 days). Submit interest for tech, and check the two year-round reqs.
Submit interest for summer-2027 technology roles on WayUp if you haven't. Get a Google Workspace and GCP story on your resume, since CME is a Google shop, and GCP is the named cloud in every cloud mention. Learn what CME Clearing actually does; six of twelve reqs ask for markets interest in CME’s own vocabulary. Check whether CME recruits on your campus.
Applications for summer 2027 expected to open for Software Engineering, Global Information Security, Cyber Defense and IT. Projected from CME’s own cycle statement and from the summer-2026 SWE req, which students report applying to on 12 September 2025 and which was delisted by 9 October, a window of roughly four to five weeks. Expect a coding pre-assessment shortly after applying.
Applications for summer 2027 expected to open for clearing and post-trade, audit, rates and OTC products, BrokerTec, corporate strategy, market regulation, brand marketing and HR. CME’s own words: recruiting for non-technology internships “begins in early winter/early spring.” The summer-2025 equivalents posted late March 2025 with an apply-by of 27 April. Reqs close on independent, unannounced dates through ~May 2027.
Chicago (20 S. Wacker) or New York (300 Vesey St), hybrid but office-anchored, typically Monday–Friday 8:30–5:30. Paid roughly $21–$40 an hour with health and mental-health benefits. Longer-term placements run 3 to 12 months. Return offers exist; CME publishes no conversion rate, but 35.9% of its open roles in 2025 were filled internally.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
CME’s own internship brochure says it plainly: "Internship applications are accepted on a rolling basis." And CME publishes no deadline anywhere, not in any of the twenty job descriptions we read and not on any careers page. Requisitions are posted per function and disappear without notice. The summer-2026 software engineering role was live in mid-September 2025 and gone by 9 October, a window of roughly four to five weeks.
So rolling plus a short window means week one is the only safe strategy.
Which CME Group Internship Programs Should You Target?
CME Group doesn't run one umbrella internship application. It posts function-specific requisitions across ten divisions, on two different calendars. Here are six tracks that account for the verified intern postings.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineering Internship (+ Fellowship) | Applications and projects that directly impact the global trading ecosystem: back-end development, cloud computing, automation, system design, DevOps and cloud migration | 10–12 wks, hybrid, Chicago | Java (required), Python, GCP, Git, IntelliJ, Linux/UNIX, REST API, SQL |
| Year-Long Technology (Platform Engineer / SRE) | Full-time in summer, then part-time through the school year; platform engineering and site reliability | Summer 40 hrs/wk, then ~15–20 hrs/wk in fall and spring | Java and/or Python, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, bash/PowerShell, UNIX/Linux |
| Quantitative & Data (Quant Risk, Data Science) | Risk/pricing models for counterparty exposure: Value-at-Risk, stress testing, liquidity, regulatory capital, portfolio analytics, backtesting; ETL and client-development analytics | Year-round or summer+fall | Master’s/PhD preferred; Python (numpy/pandas), C++, R, SQL, BigQuery, Tableau, Looker, GCP |
| Clearing & Post-Trade Services | CME Clearing infrastructure, account set-ups, trade submission workflows, OTC clearing support, client problem resolution across all asset classes | Summer, 10–12 wks, in-office Chicago | Google Workspace, Excel, strong analytical and communication skills |
| Products, Markets & Sales (Rates/OTC, BrokerTec, Data Sales) | Interest-rate and OTC product work, BrokerTec fixed-income desk, market-data sales | Summer 10–12 wks or year-round | Excel, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, Power BI / Looker, Bloomberg a plus, Salesforce |
| Corporate & Governance (Audit, Tax, Strategy, Marketing) | Audit assurance including generative-AI-assisted documentation; tax returns; DCF and comparable-transaction modelling; market-regulation research; brand and campaign work | Summer or year-round | Google Workspace, Excel, Tableau/SQL/Python a plus, Bloomberg / S&P Capital IQ |
See the full list on the CME Group careers board. CME also runs a Technology Rotational Program for entry-level tech hires that rotates participants across three teams, after which they’re eligible for promotion to Software Engineer 2.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
CME’s requirements are straightforward but two of them filter hard:
• Enrollment: currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree. CME’s WayUp summer-2027 form adds: "Candidates graduating in Summer 2027 aren't eligible," so you must still be enrolled after the internship.
• Location: you almost certainly have to be local. Eleven of twelve US reqs require you to be in Chicago or New York. One is "in-person only." The Data Sales req wants candidates "attending a Chicagoland University." CME publishes no remote internship and no relocation or housing support.
• Work authorization: no sponsorship. Eleven of twelve US reqs state CME "is unable to provide employment sponsorship" (CPT, H1B, F1, L). One documented exception: a 2025 UIUC-only technology cohort was open to candidates needing sponsorship; it didn't recur in 2026.
• GPA: stated in only 2 of 12 US reqs, both a 3.0 minimum (Data Sales, Corporate Strategy). Ten reqs state no GPA at all.
• Background: "A background in financial services isn't necessarily required" (CME Early Careers page). And the Post-Trade req says majors are "preferred, but not required."

Does CME Group Have a GPA Cutoff?
For most CME tracks there's no published GPA bar at all. A 3.0 minimum appears in exactly two of twelve US reqs (Data Sales, Corporate Strategy).
But what's near-universal is being local to Chicago or New York (11 of 12) and being authorized to work in the US without sponsorship (11 of 12).
So those two filter far more applicants than any GPA line.
What Skills Does CME Group Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Twelve CME Group US intern job descriptions from the 2026 recruiting cycle paint a company that looks nothing like the rest of finance. Google Workspace appears in 6 of 12 reqs, sometimes as a hard requirement ("Strong Google Workspace skills are a must"), and GCP is the named cloud in every cloud mention. AWS and Azure appear exactly once, as an "e.g."
So what does that mean for you? If you’ve only ever used Microsoft 365 and AWS, you’re optimizing for the wrong stack.
And AI entered the JDs between cycles: three 2026 reqs name it explicitly (generative AI tools, AI for content creation), while zero 2025 reqs did.
But the skill a CME reader most needs to notice is derivatives and markets literacy, which shows up in 6 of 12 reqs in CME’s own vocabulary (OTC clearing, Value-at-Risk, rate products).
What CME Group looks for in interns
Skills across 12 CME Group intern & analyst job descriptions · 2026-cycle US intern reqs, projecting 2027–2028
Method: full-text analysis of 12 CME Group US intern job descriptions from the 2026 recruiting cycle — two read live from CME’s Workday API on 15 August 2026, ten from Built In, which reproduces CME’s requisition text verbatim. CME’s summer-2027 requisitions had not posted yet, so 2026-cycle reqs are used to project 2027–2028. Function-mix caveat: the 12 reqs span technology, data, clearing, audit, tax, products and marketing, so no single bar describes any one track. Non-US reqs excluded.
How Is Demand for Finance and Capital Markets Interns Moving Right Now?
Finance and capital markets intern hiring right now: August 2026
Across 105 US corporate-finance intern postings tracked this month · aggregate market data, all employers
August 2026 is baseline month for this tracker. The early signal: finance-intern demand is rising roughly 4× faster than the all-levels financial-analyst market, consistent with summer-2027 campus recruiting opening. And the aggregate market asks for Excel in 67% of postings and SQL in under 3%, while CME asks for SQL in 5 of 12 and Python in 5 of 12. CME wants a technical toolkit the broad market barely mentions.
Method: aggregate analysis of US corporate-finance, FP&A, financial-analyst and capital-markets-data intern postings via Adzuna, August 2026 baseline. Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
And every bar in the chart maps to a remote Externship that ends in a finished company project.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Derivatives and markets literacy | Quant Risk Mgmt req: "Knowledge of bond math and CME rate products"; 6 of 12 reqs ask for markets interest | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| SQL, Tableau and data visualization | Data Science req: "Proficiency with Tableau"; "visualizations using Tableau, Looker, Streamlit, or R Shiny" | Beats by Dre Data Analytics |
| Python and applied AI | SWE req: "Proficiency in Java and/or Python"; Internal Audit req: "Incorporate data analytics and Generative AI tools" | Wayfair AI Agent Engineering |
| Corporate finance and valuation | Corporate Strategy req: "Discounted Cash Flows, Trading Multiples, Comparable Transactions" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
| Information security and cyber defense | CME’s Global Information Security and Cyber Defense intern tracks | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Market and deal research | Corporate Strategy req: "Bloomberg terminal and/or S&P Capital IQ" | HP Tech Ventures Deal Sourcing |
| Brand, social and campaign work | Brand Marketing req: "Social media savvy, including familiarity with social media platforms" | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy |
How close is the overlap? The Yinan Zhao deliverable is investment analysis in the vocabulary CME’s own quant-risk posting uses, and the Beats by Dre project is SQL-and-Tableau visualization work, the exact toolchain 4 of 12 CME reqs name.
What Is the CME Group Application and Interview Process Like?
CME’s funnel varies by track, but the employer-stated steps for technology roles are clear:
1. Apply to a specific requisition on CME’s Workday careers board. There’s no umbrella application — reqs are posted per function, on different calendars.
2. Coding pre-assessment (technology roles). CME: "Qualified candidates will be invited to complete a coding pre-assessment." The vendor isn’t published, and three independent Reddit threads confirm the OA across the 2025 and 2026 cycles.
3. Virtual interviews. CME: "If selected to advance, candidates may be invited to virtual coding, design, and behavioral interviews." Students describe the coding questions as LeetCode-easy, which tells you this isn't a prop shop.
4. For non-technology roles: Vault intern reviews describe "one behavioral round and one case round," a simpler loop than the technology track.
One thing to expect: turnaround is slow and unstated. Reddit threads exist purely to ask how long the post-final wait is, and nobody has a sourced answer.
But the one actionable detail is the OA, so prepare for it the week you apply.
What Students on Reddit Say
Three threads from r/csMajors, where essentially all CME Group intern discussion lives.
Applied September 12, online assessment completed September 25, then roughly three weeks of silence that a reply frames as normal seasonal backlog. That puts the tech cycle in early-to-mid September.
The coding question is genuinely LeetCode-easy, not quant-style. The onsite is about 10 to 15 minutes of behavioural with the recruiter, then an algorithm round with two engineers.
CME offers $33 an hour in Chicago with no housing assistance, and they do extend return offers to interns. The comparison was against Target at $34 an hour in Minneapolis.
How Do You Stand Out at CME Group?
Four moves, starting with the calendar. Pick your track first, because technology and everything else open months apart: technology in the fall (expected ~early Sep 2026), all other tracks in early winter or early spring. A student who waits until spring has already missed software engineering; a student who gives up in November has months left for clearing, audit and products. Second, be local or fix that first. Eleven of twelve US reqs require you to be in Chicago or New York, and CME publishes no housing support. Third, learn the Google stack. Google Workspace is in 6 of 12 reqs and GCP is the only named cloud. But most finance applicants arrive fluent in Excel and Microsoft 365 and nothing else.
Yet most applicants skip this. Fourth, show you know what an exchange actually does. Can you explain what OTC clearing is, or what a Value-at-Risk model does? Six of twelve reqs ask for markets interest in CME’s own vocabulary: OTC clearing, trade submission workflows, margin, Value-at-Risk. "I want to work in finance" competes badly against a posting that specific.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
CME Group’s peers are the exchange-operator and market-infrastructure circuit, not proprietary trading firms.

- Intercontinental Exchange (ICE / NYSE)the US exchange group that owns NYSE, energy-heavy and Atlanta-basedCareers site

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 CME Group internship?
No. Every summer-2026 CME intern requisition has closed, thirteen of them, checked directly against CME’s Workday API on 15 August 2026. That class started in June 2026.
And the next open cycle is summer 2027, with technology roles expected around early September 2026.
When do CME Group internship applications open for summer 2027?
It depends on your track. CME states that recruiting for technology internships begins in the fall for the following summer, and recruiting for all other internships begins in early winter or early spring. So expect technology roles around early September 2026 and everything else around December 2026 to April 2027.
Are CME Group internships rolling?
Yes. CME’s own internship brochure says applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and CME publishes no deadline anywhere. Requisitions are posted per function and disappear without notice. The summer-2026 software engineering role was live in mid-September 2025 and gone by 9 October.
So apply the week yours posts.
What GPA does CME Group require for an internship?
Most CME intern postings state no GPA at all. Only two of the twelve 2026-cycle US requisitions name one, both a 3.0 minimum: Data Sales Intern and Corporate Strategy. But far more applicants are filtered by CME’s requirement that you be local to Chicago or New York.
How much do CME Group interns get paid?
CME publishes the range inside each requisition. Chicago roles list $21.68 to $36.10 an hour and New York roles $23.84 to $39.71, with older 2026-cycle postings at $21.10 to $35.14. Interns also get health coverage and a mental-health benefit.
And the “$43,900 to $73,100” figure sometimes seen online is the same hourly band annualized, not a separate salary.
Does CME Group sponsor international students for internships?
No, with one documented exception. Eleven of twelve US requisitions state CME is unable to provide employment sponsorship and can only consider candidates authorized to work in the US without CPT, H1B, F1 or L assistance. A 2025 UIUC-only technology cohort was explicitly open to candidates needing sponsorship; it didn’t recur in 2026.
What is the CME Group intern interview process like?
For technology roles, CME states that qualified candidates complete a coding pre-assessment, then may be invited to virtual coding, design and behavioral interviews. Students describe the coding questions as LeetCode-easy and the onsite as a short recruiter behavioral segment followed by an algorithm round with two engineers. The assessment vendor isn’t published.
Do CME Group interns get return offers?
Students report that CME does extend return offers, but CME publishes no conversion rate. What it does publish, in its 2025 annual report, is that 35.9% of open roles were filled with internal candidates and 14.5% of employees were promoted.
And its Technology Rotational Program is a named path from intern to full-time engineer.
CME’s technology internship window is expected to open around early September 2026, and it closes in roughly four to five weeks. The non-tech tracks open later but still roll with no deadline. The one thing you control right now is what you can show when reqs go live: a remote Externship turns "interested in derivatives" into a finished project that speaks CME’s own language.
