Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), the U.S. Department of Energy lab in Aiken, South Carolina, has one student door open today. The DOE's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) application for summer 2027 opened on 14 October 2026 and closes at 5:00 PM ET on 6 January 2027, and SRNL is one of the host labs. SRNL's own intern requisitions, including its ASPIRE program, are posted "throughout the year", and none was open on 16 October 2026. In plain words: apply to SULI this fall and winter for a 10-week summer 2027 internship, and watch SRNL's job board through spring for its own postings.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship fits environmental data work, and the vCISO Cybersecurity Risk Assessment Externship matches the security roles SRNL has posted for ASPIRE. What Is a Savannah River National Laboratory Internship?

A Savannah River National Laboratory internship is a paid or stipend-supported research placement at a DOE national laboratory in Aiken, South Carolina, where interns are paired with a dedicated mentor. SRNL hosts undergraduate and graduate interns in environmental stewardship, energy solutions and science and technology, across computer science, cybersecurity, materials science, physical and life sciences and engineering. Its summer 2024 class was its largest ever, with more than 80 interns from 31 universities. This guide covers SRNL, not the Savannah River Site contractors that run their own programs.

When Do Savannah River National Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

SRNL has two kinds of student openings. The DOE's SULI key dates list summer 2027 applications opening 14 October 2026, due 6 January 2027 at 5:00 PM ET, offer notices beginning about 3 February 2027 and all DOE offers complete by about 14 April 2027. SRNL's own requisitions follow no single wave: its page says internships are hosted "throughout the year" and posted on its Open Positions page. SULI lead time is about 7 months from opening to a late-May start, and about 4.5 months from the deadline.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREHARD DEADLINE

SULI summer 2027 is open until 6 January 2027, 5:00 PM ET, and SRNL is a host lab. SRNL's own board listed 14 open jobs on 16 October 2026 and none was an internship. The spring 2027 SULI term closed on 30 September 2026.

November 2026

Attend DOE's SULI application workshop on 4 November and its virtual internship fair on 12 November, and check SRNL's Open Positions page for new intern requisitions.

6 January 2027, 5:00 PM ETHARD DEADLINE

The SULI application system closes. No materials, including recommendation letters, are accepted afterward.

February–spring 2027EXPECTED

Expected: SULI offers begin on or around 3 February and finish around 14 April, contingent on DOE funding. SRNL's own postings are expected through winter and spring; one third-party mirror showed last cycle's intern requisitions closing between April 2025 and January 2026.

Summer 2027

Summer terms run 10 weeks between May and August, with a mentor, orientation, safety training and a research poster session, as in 2024.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

SULI is a hard deadline. The DOE says the application system closes at 5:00 PM Eastern on 6 January 2027 and no materials are accepted afterward, and recommendations count toward that deadline. SRNL's own requisitions each carry their own closing date and no rolling guarantee, and a third-party mirror showed last cycle's closing anywhere from late February to mid January. Check the board every few weeks, and apply as soon as one posts.

Which Savannah River National Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?

SRNL hosts students through its own postings and through DOE programs. These are the main routes.

Details are on SRNL's internships page. Housing and transportation notes are on the same page.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

SRNL and the DOE publish slightly different criteria, so check which route you are using.

• SRNL's page: "Must be a U.S. Citizen" and a full-time student at an accredited four-year college or university.

• SULI: full-time undergraduate at an accredited institution, community colleges included, or a recent graduate within two years of the start; U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

• SULI academics: a cumulative 3.0 GPA, at least 6 STEM credit hours and 12 total credit hours by the deadline.

• Limits: no more than two SULI internships, and no more than four applications.

• Community college students: apply through CCI, which has its own DOE page.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

For SULI, treat it as a requirement: the DOE lists a cumulative 3.0 GPA across your postsecondary coursework. A GPA requirement for SRNL's own ASPIRE postings isn't published on the pages we read, so check each posting. Background-check and clearance details for interns also aren't published.

What Skills Does Savannah River National Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

SRNL publishes disciplines and past posting titles rather than tool lists. Disciplines named: computer science, cybersecurity, materials science, physical sciences, life sciences and engineering. Past ASPIRE titles: Software Developer Undergraduate Intern and Cyber Security MFA Implementation Intern. SRNL has also posted administrative and law clerk intern roles, so non-STEM students should check the board.

Note: Method: skills read from SRNL's internships page and flyer on 16 October 2026. SRNL's board had no intern requisitions, so there were no job descriptions to count and no skill-frequency chart is shown.

None of these Externships is connected to SRNL or the DOE. They help because SULI essays and SRNL applications both reward concrete project experience.

What Is the Savannah River National Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from SRNL's internships page and the DOE SULI pages.

1. Pick your route. SULI and CCI go through the DOE portal; SRNL's own internships are posted on its Open Positions page.

2. Apply to SULI by 6 January 2027. Submit transcripts, essays and recommendations, and list SRNL as a host lab.

3. Use DOE's help sessions. Attend the workshop on 4 November, the virtual internship fair on 12 November and office hours on 2, 9 and 16 December.

4. Watch SRNL's board. Check the Open Positions page from November through spring and apply as soon as an intern requisition posts.

5. Plan your move. Interns find and pay for their own housing, and need their own transportation.

All SULI offers depend on DOE funding, and dates are tentative.

What the Community Says

Reddit has one first-hand SRNL thread. We paired it with SRNL's own 2024 news story, which is labeled as such.

A SULI Fall 2026 intern said SRNL was slow to send information before the start date, and that North Augusta rents are higher. An SRNL mechanical engineer of 3.5 years recommended North Augusta but warned that commutes from Augusta can be slow with traffic.

How Do You Stand Out for an SRNL Internship?

First, apply to SULI early and list SRNL, with recommenders confirmed before the 6 January deadline. Second, treat the summer as a long interview, as a former intern told the 2024 class: SRNL's news pages describe interns who later joined the lab. Third, sort out logistics early, since housing and transportation are your responsibility. SRNL doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 SRNL internship?

No. The summer 2026 terms have ended. The open route for summer 2027 is DOE SULI, which closes on 6 January 2027 at 5:00 PM ET. SRNL's own intern requisitions weren't posted on 16 October 2026, but the lab says it hosts internships throughout the year.

When do SRNL internship applications open?

SRNL posts internships throughout the year on its Open Positions page, with no single wave. SULI summer 2027 opened on 14 October 2026 and closes on 6 January 2027. A third-party mirror showed last cycle's SRNL intern requisitions closing between April 2025 and January 2026.

Who is eligible for an SRNL internship?

SRNL's page says you must be a U.S. citizen and a full-time student at an accredited four-year college or university. SULI also admits lawful permanent residents and recent graduates, and requires a cumulative 3.0 GPA, 6 STEM credit hours and 12 total credit hours by the deadline.

How much does SRNL pay interns?

SULI pays $650 a week, about $6,500 over 10 weeks, plus possible travel reimbursement and a housing allowance, per the DOE. SRNL hasn't published a pay figure for its own ASPIRE internships. Interns choose, secure and pay for their own housing.

How long is an SRNL internship?

Summer internships last 10 weeks, from May through August. SULI fall and spring terms last 16 weeks, and CCI offers a 16-week flexible option. SRNL's ASPIRE program is 10 weeks in the summer, with an opportunity to extend for up to one year.

Do I need a car and housing at SRNL?

Yes to both. SRNL's page says interns are responsible for selecting, securing and paying for housing, and that public transportation isn't available, so you need your own transportation. Many interns use University of South Carolina Aiken dorms, available from mid-May through the end of July.

Can non-STEM majors intern at SRNL?

Possibly. SRNL's ASPIRE flyer describes the program as open to STEM and non-STEM students, and a third-party mirror showed past administrative and law clerk intern postings. SULI is for STEM research. Check SRNL's Open Positions page for current requisitions, since none was open on 16 October 2026.

How many interns does SRNL host?

More than 80 in summer 2024, from 31 universities, the largest class in SRNL's history at that time. In 2019 the lab hosted 48 students from 20 colleges. We found no official 2026 figure, and SRNL doesn't publish applicant counts or an acceptance rate.

The SULI deadline is 6 January 2027 at 5:00 PM ET, and SRNL's own postings can appear any time. If you want a finished project to write about, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
