The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a U.S. Department of Energy fusion research lab managed by Princeton University, is taking summer 2027 undergraduate applications right now. The DOE application for the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program opened on 14 October 2026 and closes at 5:00 PM ET on 6 January 2027, with recommendations included and no late materials accepted. The 10-week summer internship runs 31 May to 6 August 2027 and pays a $650 weekly stipend. In plain words: you apply this fall and winter, you intern in summer 2027, and you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

What Is a Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Internship?

A Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory internship is a paid, on-site research placement at a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory with more than 70 years of history in fusion energy and plasma science. Princeton University manages the lab for the DOE. PPPL isn't a Princeton University department program. Most students come through the DOE's SULI and CCI programs, which run at 17 participating DOE laboratories and facilities. In summer 2026 it hosted more than 30 interns, plus 15 Plasma Pathways Summer School students.

When Do Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The summer 2027 SULI cycle has one national deadline. The DOE's key dates page lists applications opening 14 October 2026, due 6 January 2027 at 5:00 PM ET, offer notices beginning about 3 February 2027 and all DOE offers complete by about 14 April 2027. Last year's deadline was 7 January, so this year's is a day earlier. Lead time is about 7.5 months from opening to the 31 May start, and about 5 months from the deadline. All dates are tentative and offers depend on DOE funding.

SULI and CCI summer 2027 applications are open until 6 January 2027, 5:00 PM ET. The DOE's application workshop is on 4 November (CCI on 5 November), and a virtual internship fair on 12 November. Ask your recommenders now, because their letters count toward the deadline.

November–December 2026

Finish essays, request transcripts and attend DOE office hours on 2, 9 and 16 December. Lawful permanent residents should contact the lab early, because site access approval takes lead time.

The SULI and CCI application system closes. No materials, including recommendations, are accepted after this.

February–April 2027EXPECTED

Expected: offer notifications begin on or around 3 February, and all DOE offers complete on or around 14 April. Operations Internship projects may post on public job boards on a rolling basis.

Summer 2027

Interns start 31 May with an intensive plasma physics course, work about 40 hours a week on a mentored project through 6 August, and give a final presentation.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard deadline, not a rolling review. The DOE says the application system closes at 5:00 PM Eastern on 6 January 2027 and no materials are accepted afterward, and recommendations count toward that deadline. Submit early enough that a recommender's delay or a portal problem doesn't cost you the cycle. The Operations Internship projects are different: they post on a rolling basis when projects become available.

Which Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?

PPPL hosts students through three routes. SULI is the main research track.

ProgramFocusDurationKey skills
SULI summer 2027 (open now)Plasma physics and fusion energy science and engineering research under a staff scientist or engineer10 weeks, 31 May–6 Aug 2027Physics, engineering, coding, simulation

Operations Internship ProgramNon-research lab operations: accounting, energy management, records, facilities, maintenance, health physics10 weeks, 31 May–7 Aug 2027Depends on the project

SULI details are on the DOE SULI page and PPPL's SULI page. The Operations program has its own page; no projects were posted on 16 October 2026.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

SULI eligibility comes from the DOE and PPPL pages and is applied strictly.

• Enrollment: full-time undergraduate at an accredited institution, community colleges included, with at least one completed semester as a matriculated student, or a recent graduate within two years of the start.

• Credits: at least 6 credit hours in STEM and 12 total undergraduate credit hours by the deadline. AP and high-school credits don't count.

• GPA: a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

• Citizenship: U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of application; offers depend on site access approval.

• Limits: no more than two SULI internships. The DOE page allows four applications, while PPPL's page says three, so plan for three.

• Operations track: four-year college students or recent graduates (up to one year) who are eligible to work in the U.S.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

Treat it as a requirement. The DOE lists a cumulative 3.0 GPA for all postsecondary coursework, including institutions attended in the five years before your latest enrollment. The 6 STEM and 12 total credit hours must appear on your transcript by the deadline. Beyond the minimums, essays matter: one 2023 applicant said the essays were clearly read.

What Skills Does Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Neither the DOE nor PPPL pages list tool names. The skills below come from the program descriptions. Research fundamentals: plasma physics and fusion energy science and engineering, taught in a course at the start of the summer. Computation: one 2024 Reddit poster said the SULI course introduced PlasmaPy and TokaMaker. Operations: accounting, energy management, records management, facilities and health physics for the Operations track.

Note: Method: skills read from the DOE and PPPL program pages on 16 October 2026. SULI has no published job descriptions to count, and PPPL's board listed no intern requisitions, so no skill-frequency chart is shown.

None of these Externships is connected to PPPL or the DOE. They help because your SULI essays should describe specific work you've done, and a finished project gives you something concrete.

What Is the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the DOE SULI pages and PPPL's program page.

1. Create a portal account. Register on the DOE application system through the SULI page and select PPPL among the participating laboratories.

2. Submit your materials. Upload transcripts, answer the essay questions and have recommendation letters submitted. Recommendations count toward the 6 January deadline.

3. Use the DOE help sessions. Attend the application workshop on 4 November, the virtual internship fair on 12 November and office hours on 2, 9 and 16 December.

4. Wait for offers. Notifications begin on or around 3 February 2027 and all DOE offers complete around 14 April. All offers depend on funding.

5. Start in May. Summer interns begin 31 May with the plasma physics course.

Operations Internship projects apply like any other job opening: watch the Princeton University careers page and PPPL's job board.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit has a few first-hand accounts of the PPPL SULI program, mostly from 2023 and 2024.

A 2023 applicant who applied near the deadline with a 3.9 GPA got a PPPL offer on 28 February with no interview. They said the essays are definitely read, and that the lab sent a few project options days before the start and let them switch projects.

How Do You Stand Out for a PPPL Internship?

First, clear the thresholds early: a 3.0 GPA, 6 STEM and 12 total credit hours by the deadline, and recommenders lined up now. Second, write the essays with care. A past applicant reported they're read. Third, explore the tools PPPL students mention, such as PlasmaPy, and look at past SULI student presentations. PPPL doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate.
