Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) says more than 1,200 interns work with its scientists and engineers every year (a 2022 figure). Yet on 3 October 2026 its own careers board lists exactly one internship, a PhD Intern in Geochemistry that closes on 10 October. That's not a hiring freeze, it's the calendar. In the last two cycles PNNL posted its summer internships between early December and early April, and most of them closed one to four weeks after they went up.

In plain words: you apply mainly between December 2026 and March 2027, and you intern in summer 2027. The one fall door is the Department of Energy's SULI program, which PNNL hosts and which opens for summer 2027 on 14 October 2026.

PNNL's summer 2027 internships aren't posted yet; the main wave is expected from mid-December 2026 to March 2027, and each posting carries its own close date, often just two to four weeks out. SULI is the exception: its applications for summer 2027 run from 14 October 2026 to 6 January 2027.

The months before PNNL posts are the time to build something to show a mentor. Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights Externship fits PNNL's AI and data analytics postings, and the ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics Externship fits its environmental and earth science work.

What Is a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Internship?

A PNNL internship is a paid research or technical placement at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a Department of Energy Office of Science lab in Richland, Washington, founded in 1965 and operated by Battelle. PNNL reports 6,043 staff and $1.66 billion in spending for fiscal 2024. Interns are matched to a research group and a mentor, not to a rotation, so the work depends on the req: atomistic simulations for fusion materials, quantum computing algorithms, grid and building research, or curating a marine energy database, to pick four 2026 postings. PNNL runs several programs under that umbrella. Its own project internships cover undergraduates through PhD students, the National Security Internship Program places students in four national-security divisions, and the lab also hosts DOE programs such as SULI and CCI. PNNL hires through careers.pnnl.gov, separately from Battelle's corporate internships.

When Do Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

PNNL doesn't open one big summer window. It posts summer internships one requisition at a time, mostly between December and March, and each req carries its own "Posting Closing Date" set by PNNL. In archived copies of PNNL's job feed, summer 2025 reqs went up from 5 December 2024 to 10 April 2025, and summer 2026 reqs from 17 December 2025 to 30 March 2026. The windows ran from 5 to 109 days, but most were 7 to 31, and 14 days was the most common. The calendar is fairly stable: the same National Security Internship Program reqs moved one to two weeks later each year, which is why applications for summer 2027 are expected from about mid-December 2026 to March 2027, about three to six months before a June start.

PNNL's own summer 2027 internships aren't posted yet, and that's normal for October. The board lists one intern req, PhD Intern - Geochemistry, closing 10 October 2026; a PhD Language Intelligence req closed on 30 September. Two fall actions are open to you: DOE's SULI program for summer 2027 opens on 14 October, and PhD students can apply to SCGSR until 4 November 2026.

14 October 2026 to 6 January 2027HARD DEADLINE

DOE SULI applications for summer 2027, due 6 January 2027 at 5pm Eastern. PNNL is one of the host labs you can rank. This is a fixed deadline, unlike PNNL's own reqs, and it's open to US citizens and permanent residents only.

Mid-December 2026 to March 2027EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

PNNL's own reqs for summer 2027 are expected to post: National Security Internship Program and MSIPP waves first (December to January), then project internships for undergraduate, master's and PhD students through March. Each one closes on its own date, often 2 to 4 weeks after posting and sometimes after just a week.

February to May 2027EXPECTED

Interviews and offers. SULI offer notifications begin around 3 February 2027. For PNNL's own reqs, students on Reddit say mentors do most of the vetting and some respond within days of a req closing while others take weeks.

Summer 2027

The internship: 10 to 12 weeks for most summer programs, mostly on the Richland campus, often ending with a research symposium or poster session.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

PNNL's urgency comes from short windows, not one deadline. Every req shows its own closing date, and archived copies of PNNL's feed show how tight they get: a summer 2025 PhD Battery Materials req was open for 7 days, a summer 2026 MSIPP geochemistry req for 14, and an NSIP AI and Data Analytics req for 25. A req you spot on day ten may already be gone.

But there's no single date to circle, because each posting sets its own. Set a saved search for "intern" on careers.pnnl.gov from early December, check it weekly through March, and apply the week a matching req appears. The SULI route is the exception, with a fixed 6 January 2027 deadline you can plan around.

Which Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?

PNNL runs its own programs and hosts several DOE ones. These are the routes most students should look at, with pay from PNNL's posted ranges or DOE's published stipend.

There are smaller routes too, including business internships, the Safeguards program and high school internships. See the full list on pnnl.gov/internships.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

PNNL's rules depend on the program, so check the one you're targeting:

• PhD internships: currently enrolled in a PhD program, with a 3.0 minimum GPA (stated on the live Geochemistry req and on the 2026 PhD reqs we read).

• NSIP: at least 6 credits a term as an undergraduate, or enrolled in a graduate program, with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better and the ability to work at least 10 weeks.

• Undergraduate project internships: set per req. A 2026 marine energy database req asked for 6 credit hours and a 2.5 cumulative GPA, so don't assume the PhD floor applies.

• SULI (DOE): US citizen or permanent resident, 18 or older, full-time undergraduate or graduated within two years, 3.0 cumulative GPA.

• International students: not barred from PNNL's own project reqs. The live req describes an LSSO risk determination for foreign nationals who haven't lived in the US for three consecutive years, and DOE's country-of-risk affiliation rule applies.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

On the reqs, yes: "Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required" sits under Minimum Qualifications on PhD postings, and NSIP states 3.3 or better on its program page. What varies is which floor applies to you. A 3.1 doesn't rule an undergraduate out of PNNL: NSIP is closed to them, but a project internship with a lower floor, or SULI at 3.0, is still open. GPA also isn't always what decides it. A student in r/REU who interned at PNNL through CCI says they had a 3.0 and very strong recommendations, and that passion counted for more than prior research.

What Skills Does Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

PNNL postings are project-specific, so the useful signal is what repeats across them. Reading 11 intern postings (the live Geochemistry req plus ten summer 2026 reqs recovered from archived copies of PNNL's job feed), three clusters stand out:

• Analysis and modeling: interpreting data and building models or simulations shows up in most postings, from geochemical reaction data to grid optimization.

• Computing: writing code, machine learning and optimization run through the AI, data and materials postings; Python is named outright on three.

• Research practice: contributing to peer-reviewed publications or presenting results, and working closely with staff scientists.

Lab skills matter for the physical science roles: microscopy, spectroscopy and characterization on the materials and geochemistry reqs.

Match the Externship to the PNNL division you'd apply to, then name that division in your application.

What Is the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?

PNNL's process is mentor-driven, which explains both its speed when a mentor wants you and its silence when one doesn't:

1. Search the board. PNNL tells students to search careers.pnnl.gov for "intern" or "internship"; search "NSIP" for the national security program. Titles rarely say "summer 2027," so don't filter on the year.

2. Apply before the req's closing date. Each posting shows its own "Posting Closing Date." Submit through the iCIMS link on the req.

3. Mentor review. HR screens first, then the scientists who'd supervise you review resumes. A Reddit commenter says a researcher who likes a resume can set up the interview directly.

4. Interview. For PhD internships, students describe a video screen on Microsoft Teams mixing behavioral and technical questions, usually one round, with some groups adding an onsite day.

5. SULI or CCI route. Apply through DOE's portal; PNNL may then ask selected candidates to apply on its own site as well, and a student who did that recommends doing it fast.

When it takes weeks, Reddit commenters point to PNNL being slow overall and, in spring 2026, to funding uncertainty, and they warn that PNNL loses interns who've already accepted faster offers. Keep your other applications alive.

What Students on Reddit Say

Most PNNL intern talk lives in r/TriCitiesWA, the local subreddit for Richland and its neighbors.

PNNL is slow, so be patient. Commenters say the lab often loses interns who've accepted other offers by the time it gets back to them, though it does email you if you aren't picked for an interview.

r/TriCitiesWA consensus, paraphrased · read the thread

For a PhD internship screen on Teams, expect a mix of tell-me-about-a-time questions and technical ones. Most PhD internships need only that one round, but some groups follow up with a full onsite day.

r/TriCitiesWA consensus, paraphrased · read the thread

Whether you'll publish depends on the group. One commenter compares PNNL to a dozen mini research companies: some groups chase papers, others patents, and national security work may be something you can't even describe to family.

How Do You Stand Out at PNNL?

Three moves, and the first is about timing.

First, be on the board in December. With 7- to 14-day windows common, the students who get interviews are often just the ones who saw the req. Set the saved search now and apply to SULI by 6 January as a second route.

Second, write to the group, not the lab. Mentors pick interns, so name the division or research area in your cover letter and say which of its methods you've used. A geochemistry applicant who mentions Raman or FTIR work reads very differently from one who says they love science.

Third, bring a finished project with a result. Eight of the 11 postings we read mention publishing or presenting research. A poster, a report or a GitHub repo with a clear outcome answers that better than a list of courses.

PNNL doesn't publish a conversion rate, but its own pages feature interns who became staff, and one Reddit commenter says they first came to PNNL as a SULI intern three years earlier.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 PNNL internship?

No. PNNL's summer 2026 reqs posted between December 2025 and March 2026 and all closed by mid-April 2026. Right now the board lists one PhD Geochemistry req, closing 10 October 2026. For summer 2027, SULI opens on 14 October 2026, and PNNL's own reqs are expected from mid-December.

When does PNNL post summer 2027 internships?

Mostly between mid-December 2026 and March 2027, based on the last two cycles. Summer 2025 reqs posted from 5 December 2024 to 10 April 2025, and summer 2026 reqs from 17 December 2025 to 30 March 2026. Treat these dates as estimates and check careers.pnnl.gov weekly.

How long do PNNL internship postings stay open?

Usually one to four weeks. Each req shows its own closing date, and archived postings ranged from 5 to 109 days, with 14 days the most common. A summer 2025 PhD Battery Materials req stayed open for only 7 days, so apply the week a matching req appears.

What is the SULI deadline for PNNL?

The deadline is 6 January 2027 at 5pm Eastern for summer 2027. DOE's SULI application opens on 14 October 2026, and PNNL is one of the host labs. Offer notifications begin around 3 February 2027. SULI requires US citizenship or permanent residency and a 3.0 GPA.

How much do PNNL interns get paid?

It depends on degree level. PNNL's posted hourly ranges are $24.04 to $36.06 for PhD interns, $20.87 to $31.30 for master's interns, and roughly $16.25 to $27.02 for undergraduates, based on 2026 postings. SULI pays a $650 weekly stipend plus travel reimbursement instead.

What GPA does PNNL require for internships?

It varies by program. PhD reqs require at least a 3.0, the National Security Internship Program needs a cumulative 3.3, and SULI asks for 3.0. One 2026 undergraduate tech req set the bar at 2.5, so read the minimum qualifications on each posting rather than assuming one number.

Can international students intern at PNNL?

Yes, for many of PNNL's own reqs. The live posting describes an LSSO risk determination for foreign nationals who haven't lived in the US for three consecutive years, and DOE's country-of-risk rule applies. SULI and some national-security roles are different, since SULI requires US citizenship or permanent residency.

Is a PNNL internship the same as a Battelle internship?

No. Battelle operates PNNL, but PNNL hires its own interns through careers.pnnl.gov, separately from Battelle's corporate internships in places like Columbus. If you want lab research in Richland or Seattle, apply on PNNL's board; for Battelle's corporate roles, use Battelle's own careers site.

PNNL's summer 2027 reqs will come in short bursts from December, so be ready before they land. This fall, apply to SULI after 14 October, and finish a remote Externship project you can name in a PNNL application.
