Last updated: October 2026
Oak Ridge National Laboratory lists 127 open jobs on its own careers site, and not one is a student internship. Every ORNL internship runs through two other systems, and both already list summer 2027 programs as of 16 October 2026. The Department of Energy's SULI portal opened on 14 October for summer 2027 and closes on 6 January 2027 at 5:00 PM ET. ORNL's own programs on Zintellect close on 29 January 2027 for Pathways to Computing and 25 February 2027 for Research Student Internships and Technical and Professional Internships. In plain words: you apply between October 2026 and February 2027, you intern in summer 2027. Summer interns on RSI or TPI get $750 a week plus a $250-a-week housing allowance, and SULI, RSI and TPI require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights Externship builds data-extraction skills that suit ORNL's computing and data science projects, and the ARCeH Data Analytics Externship gives you environmental health data practice for biology and environment applications. What Is an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Internship?
An Oak Ridge National Laboratory internship is a paid, full-time appointment, usually 10 weeks in summer, in an active research group or professional team at what its Zintellect postings call the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory. ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle LLC for the Department of Energy and sits in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Its research areas include energy science, neutron science, fusion and fission, isotopes, biology and environment, and supercomputing, and its interns can work with Frontier, the exascale supercomputer. There is no single ORNL internship: DOE's SULI program, ORNL's Research Student Internships, Technical and Professional Internships and Pathways to Computing each have their own page, deadline and rules.

When Do Oak Ridge National Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
ORNL's dates are published, not projected. DOE sets the SULI calendar, and each ORNL program states its own deadline on Zintellect. The Zintellect deadlines have been stable for three years: summer RSI and TPI closed on 27 February 2025 and 26 February 2026 and close on 25 February 2027, and PCIP closed on 3 February 2025 and 30 January 2026 and closes on 29 January 2027. That puts the summer 2027 deadlines about 3 to 4 months before the 1 June start, and SULI's opening date about 7.5 months before it. SULI's dates are DOE's own and marked tentative.
SULI for summer 2027 has been open since 14 October 2026. Spring 2027 Research Student Internships and Technical and Professional Internships close on 28 October 2026 at 11:59 PM ET for appointments starting in January 2027. UT-ORII SMART asks for applications by 15 November 2026 for priority consideration.
SULI summer 2027 applications, including recommendations, are due at 5:00 PM ET. DOE says no materials are accepted after the deadline. SULI offers are due to begin around 3 February 2027.
Pathways to Computing (PCIP) applications close at 5:00 PM EST. The program is for undergraduates in computer science, computational science and mathematics, and it excludes anyone with an earlier ORNL college-level internship.
Summer 2027 Research Student Internships and Technical and Professional Internships close at 11:59:59 PM ET. ORNL researchers review applications, and offers roll out from around 18 March 2027 with 7 days to accept. All SULI offers are due to finish around 14 April 2027.
RSI, TPI and PCIP summer appointments run from 1 June to 6 August 2027. For summer 2028, expect SULI to open around mid-October 2027 and the Zintellect deadlines to land between late January and late February 2028, based on the last three years.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Every ORNL program is a hard deadline, not a rolling review. DOE's SULI key dates say the application system closes at the deadline and no materials are accepted afterward, and the PCIP posting says applications are accepted until 29 January 2027. RSI and TPI have a February cutoff, but ORNL researchers review applications directly, so a finished statement of purpose and a named research area matter more than submitting early. Recommendations count toward the SULI deadline, so ask your recommenders in November rather than the week of 6 January.
Which Oak Ridge National Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?
ORNL students come in through six routes, and each has its own page and rules. Keep them separate when you plan.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOE SULI at ORNL | Research project in an active ORNL group with a mentor; on-site only | 10 weeks summer; 16 weeks spring and fall | STEM coursework, research interest |
| Research Student Internships (RSI) | Research across ORNL's science areas; applicants pick areas and may name mentors | 10 to 12 weeks summer; 16 to 19 weeks spring | STEM research skills by area |
| Technical and Professional Internships (TPI) | IT, facilities and operations, HR, marketing, graphic design, data analytics, cybersecurity, legal, communications, finance | 10 to 12 weeks summer; 16 weeks in the academic year | Professional skills by function |
| Pathways to Computing (PCIP) | Computing projects, with access to Frontier; applicants rank two focus areas | 10 weeks, 1 Jun–6 Aug 2027 | Computer science, computational science, mathematics |
| DOE Community College Internships (CCI) | Research or technical project for community college students; Spring 2027 closed 30 Sep 2026 | 10 weeks summer; 16 weeks spring and fall | Technical coursework |
| UT-ORII SMART | Mentoring and research training with University of Tennessee housing | 10 weeks summer | Varies by project |
Details sit on the ORNL undergraduate programs page and each Zintellect posting. We left out the NNSA and military-transition programs ORNL also lists.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Rules differ by program and come from the DOE SULI pages and the Zintellect postings.
• Citizenship: SULI, RSI and TPI require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency at the time of application. The PCIP posting doesn't list a citizenship rule in the text we read, so confirm it before you apply.
• Enrollment: RSI and TPI take current students at accredited U.S. colleges, community colleges included, and some recent graduates; postdoctoral researchers aren't eligible. SULI wants a full-time undergraduate or a graduate of the last two years with at least one matriculated semester, 6 STEM credit hours and 12 total credit hours by the deadline.
• GPA: a 3.00 cumulative GPA on a 4.00 scale for RSI, TPI and SULI. Exceptions on RSI and TPI need a mentor's written justification.
• Age: 18 or older at application for RSI and TPI, and when the internship begins for SULI.
• PCIP: full-time, degree-seeking undergraduates who will continue into Fall 2027, so seniors graduating by spring 2027 are out. No earlier ORNL college-level internship.
• Access: every award is contingent on DOE and ORNL security access approval, and you must show proof of health insurance.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
For SULI it's a stated eligibility rule. For RSI and TPI the posting sets 3.00 as the requirement but allows exceptions case by case when a mentor justifies it in writing, so a GPA just under 3.0 isn't automatically disqualifying if a mentor backs you. You still need documentation of your GPA before the appointment starts. PCIP's posting didn't state a GPA minimum in the text we read.
What Skills Does Oak Ridge National Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The programs state their skills by track instead of in one list. PCIP asks for computer science, computational science or mathematics, and its projects span high-performance computing, AI and machine learning, data science and quantum computing. TPI is aimed at information technology, data analytics, cybersecurity, finance, legal counsel, communications, marketing, graphic design and human resources. RSI and SULI match students to research projects in groups across the lab's eight science areas, so your coursework and any lab or coding experience carry the weight.
Note: Skill chart not shown: ORNL posts its student programs as umbrella postings with shared qualifications, and projects are matched after you apply, so there are no separate job descriptions to count. The skills above come from the Zintellect postings for PCIP, TPI and RSI, read on 16 October 2026.
How Is Demand for Research Interns Moving Right Now?

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row ties an ORNL program's stated skills to a remote Externship that gives you something concrete for your statement of purpose.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| AI and data extraction | PCIP: high-performance computing, AI and machine learning, data science | Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights |
| Automation and AI agents | PCIP: computer science and computational science projects | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
| Environmental and health data | RSI research areas include biology and environment | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Cybersecurity risk | TPI: "cybersecurity" among the professional fields | vCISO Cybersecurity Risk Assessment |
| Finance and operations | TPI: "finance" and "facilities and operations" among the professional fields | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
None of these Externships is connected to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They give you finished project work to describe in the statement of purpose that ORNL researchers read.
What Is the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the Zintellect postings and DOE's SULI pages.
1. Pick your doors. You can apply to SULI and to RSI, TPI or PCIP. Pick the research areas or professional field you want, and note that PCIP excludes earlier ORNL interns.
2. Zintellect programs (RSI, TPI, PCIP). Create a Zintellect profile, then add education, experience, a statement of purpose and a resume. Upload a transcript (unofficial is accepted to apply). PCIP applicants rank two focus areas and list one recommender.
3. SULI. Apply in the DOE portal, name ORNL among your laboratory choices and get your recommendations in before 6 January 2027.
4. Review and offer. ORNL researchers review RSI and TPI applications directly, with offers from about 18 March 2027 and 7 days to accept. SULI offers begin around 3 February 2027.
5. Access approval. Offers are contingent on DOE and ORNL security access approval and proof of health insurance, so start the paperwork the day an offer arrives.
Plan your cash: the first stipend payment is delayed, and Zintellect tells interns to cover personal expenses for the first 30 days.
What Students on Reddit Say
Applicants on Reddit mostly compare when offers arrive. We found one ORNL thread we could read in full:
SULI applicants in February 2026 traded offer dates. One reported an offer around 11 February matched to a specific mentor, while another was told by ORNL that offer processing began on 17 February and takes time because of the paperwork. A verbal offer from a mentor can arrive before the official one.
How Do You Stand Out for an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Internship?
First, apply early to SULI, since it closes first, and then to the Zintellect program that fits your major. Second, for RSI and TPI, name research areas and mentors: researchers review applications directly, and Zintellect tells applicants to read ORNL's research areas first. Third, if you're not a STEM research major, use TPI, which is aimed at finance, communications, legal, human resources and IT students. ORNL doesn't publish intern class sizes, acceptance rates or a conversion rate, so treat any figure you see elsewhere with caution.

Yes. RSI and TPI pay $750 a week for undergraduates plus a $250 weekly housing allowance. PCIP pays $750 a week with housing assistance, and SULI at ORNL pays $650 a week plus $250 for housing. The postings call stipends and housing taxable, and the first payment is delayed.
Who can apply to an ORNL internship?
SULI, RSI and TPI require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency, enrollment in a degree program and a 3.0 GPA, and applicants must be 18. PCIP is for full-time undergraduates continuing into Fall 2027 with no earlier ORNL college internship. Every offer needs DOE and ORNL access approval.
Where do I apply for an ORNL internship?
Apply to SULI through the Department of Energy's SULI portal and to RSI, TPI and PCIP through Zintellect. ORNL's own careers site, jobs.ornl.gov, listed 127 jobs on 16 October 2026 and no student internships, so searching it for internships will mislead you.
Can I do an ORNL internship remotely?
Partly. The RSI and TPI postings say appointments can be "virtually or on-site" in Oak Ridge. DOE says SULI internships are conducted on-site and remote participation isn't available. PCIP is on-site and includes housing assistance. Check the individual posting before you plan around remote work.
How long are ORNL internships?
Summer terms run 10 weeks for SULI and PCIP and 10 to 12 weeks for RSI and TPI. Summer 2027 RSI, TPI and PCIP appointments run 1 June to 6 August 2027. Spring and fall terms last 16 weeks or more, and the Spring 2027 RSI term runs 19 January to 7 May 2027.
Does an ORNL internship lead to a full-time job?
ORNL doesn't publish a conversion rate. It describes the internships as a way to strengthen technical skills, expand professional networks and gain insight into national laboratory careers. RSI also lists a 12-month appointment option for recent graduates. Treat the internship as a credential and a network, not a guaranteed pipeline.
SULI closes on 6 January 2027, and the Zintellect deadlines follow within weeks. Start your statement of purpose now, and if you want a finished project to write about, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
