Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory had 553 undergraduate interns and 657 graduate students on its payroll in fiscal 2025, and the summer 2027 wave is already live. On 3 October 2026 its own job board listed 25 summer 2027 student requisitions, and the Computing and Data Science ones carry a hard cutoff of January 15, 2027. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

So this page isn't about waiting for a window. It's about picking the right track while it's open, because LLNL runs two calendars at once and only one of them has a published close date.

What Is a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Internship?

A Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory internship is a paid, roughly 12-week research placement at the Department of Energy and NNSA national security lab in Livermore, California, run by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC. Interns support projects in computing, data science, engineering and the physical sciences under a staff mentor, attend weekly seminars and present their work at the end.

The scale is real. LLNL ran on $3.706 billion in FY25 funding with 9,340 employees, and it achieved fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility in 2022. Every one of the 25 summer 2027 reqs reads "Security Clearance: None required", so you don't need a clearance to apply.

When Do Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

LLNL's own student page says summer internships "are generally posted September–February", and this cycle started early. The first summer 2027 engineering reqs went live on August 21, 2026, Computing followed on September 1, and four science institutes posted between September 28 and October 1. That last group is new since our 28 September check, so some divisions that posted between January and May last cycle are arriving early this time.

What changes the plan is the split. Computing and the Data Science Summer Institute close on one fixed date, while engineering and science reqs list none.

DOE's SULI program opens summer 2027 applications on October 14 (LLNL is a host lab; SULI is due January 6, 2027). The CGSR Spring 2027 research associate reqs close to applicants on October 19, 2026.

December 2026 to January 15, 2027HARD DEADLINE

Mentor phone interviews start, per LLNL, anytime from December. Computing and DSSI applications for summer 2027 close on January 15, 2027, and no late entry is listed. Computing mentors must make selections by February 5.

February to April 2027EXPECTED

DSSI applicants not contacted by February 9 haven't been selected. Engineering and science division interviews continue through April, and more summer 2027 division reqs are expected to post through spring, as they did last cycle.

Summer 2027

Internships run from May 17 to September 10, 2027 in Livermore, after a federal background check and a drug test. DSSI alumni often return through the Computing Scholar Program.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

LLNL's Computing reqs say it in one line: "Positions will be closed to applicants on January 15, 2027." The DSSI page says the same thing ("Applications close end of day January 15, 2027"), and both give mentors only until early February to pick. That's a hard deadline, not a rolling window.

The deadline isn't the only reason to move now. A Reddit commenter who screens LLNL applicants explained that divisions run catch-all postings and researchers search the pile by keyword, so a strong application that lands early has more chances to be pulled. Selections tend to land in December and January once project budgets settle after the October 1 fiscal year start.

So what about the engineering reqs with no close date? Treat them as filling while you wait.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Every summer 2027 req we read shares the same core gates:

• Enrollment: a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution, 18 or older at the start date.

• GPA: 3.0. Seven of the 25 summer reqs say "Must have GPA of 3.0 or higher"; ten list it under "Qualifications We Desire".

• Citizenship and NDAA: LLNL accepts international applicants, but visa support varies by role. 22 of 25 reqs require eligibility under NDAA Section 3112, which generally bars citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without US dual citizenship or permanent residency from non-public areas.

• Clearance and screening: none of the 25 summer reqs require a security clearance, but every one requires a federal background check and a drug screen that includes marijuana.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

On some reqs, yes. Computing and several engineering postings write it as a must, while others (Materials Engineering, for one) list 3.0 as desired. Read the qualifications block of each req you apply to rather than assuming one rule covers the lab. If you're finishing your bachelor's before summer 2027, apply to the graduate posting, not the undergraduate one.

What Skills Does Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We read the qualifications and duties sections of all 25 live summer 2027 reqs on 3 October 2026. Three buckets come out of them.

Communicating research. 22 of 25 ask you to present and communicate results, usually through a talk or poster session. Applying principles to real problems. 18 ask for the ability to apply computational, engineering or scientific principles to technical problems, and 15 name gathering and analyzing data. Technical depth by track. Python, machine learning and data science show up mainly in the Computing and DSSI reqs, while engineering reqs lean on hands-on lab and design work.

What Is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?

LLNL describes its own process on the student programs page, and community reports fill in the timing:

1. Apply on SmartRecruiters. Submit to every req you qualify for; each division reviews its own applicants. Upload transcripts that show your current and upcoming academic level.

2. Mentor review. Researchers search the applicant pool for their projects. Your portal status may read "new" for weeks while this happens.

3. Phone interview. A mentor calls to set up an interview, anytime from December to April. Community reports describe a conversation about your past projects with a few quick technical questions.

4. Top-candidate forms. Selected candidates are asked for transcripts and a conflict of interest form before the offer.

5. Offer and screening. HR sends a formal offer, then you complete the federal background check application and the drug test before start dates are confirmed.

Questions about the process go to ScholarEmployment@llnl.gov, the address LLNL lists on its student page.

What Students on Reddit Say

Most LLNL intern talk happens on r/Livermore, and nearly all of it concerns timing.

One applicant waited about five weeks from applying to an interview, then received top-candidate emails and forms, and the offer came roughly two months after the interview. A commenter replied that the top-candidate note is good news but not a guarantee.

Selections usually don't happen until December or January, because projects only learn their budgets after the October 1 start of the federal fiscal year, and later still when Congress runs on a continuing resolution.

Divisions often post one catch-all req and researchers comb the pile with keyword searches, so the advice is to research groups doing the work you want and contact them directly rather than wait.

How Do You Stand Out at a National Security Lab?

LLNL doesn't publish an applicant count or an acceptance rate, so we won't guess one. What the reqs and the community make clear is how selection works: a mentor picks you for a project. Three moves follow from that.

First, apply to every req you qualify for, and apply early. Second, contact researchers. Find the groups doing the work you want (LLNL's computing and science sites list them) and send a short note with your resume and one sentence on the project you'd want to join.

Third, bring finished work to the interview. Applicants on Reddit describe interviews built around past projects, with only a few quick technical checks. A completed project you can walk through, from the problem to the result, does more than a list of courses. The return path is real: LLNL says many DSSI alumni come back as interns, though it doesn't publish a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 LLNL internship?

No. Summer 2026 hiring is over, and those reqs have closed. Summer 2027 is open now, with 25 student reqs live on 3 October 2026. Computing and DSSI applications for summer 2027 close January 15, 2027, while engineering and science division reqs list no close date. Spring 2027 options are also open.

When is the LLNL summer 2027 internship deadline?

January 15, 2027 for Computing and the Data Science Summer Institute, stated in LLNL's own reqs and on the DSSI page. Engineering and science division reqs for summer 2027 have no published deadline, so treat them as filling while you wait. The CGSR spring 2027 reqs close October 19, 2026.

How much do LLNL interns get paid?

LLNL's own summer 2027 reqs list $23.26 to $31.62 an hour for undergraduates at the 705.1 level and $26.22 to $33.38 at the 714.0 level. Graduate interns earn $6,752 to $8,201 a month. Step placement depends on your most recent completed academic year, and benefits include holiday and sick pay.

Do LLNL interns need a security clearance?

No. All 25 summer 2027 reqs we read say no security clearance is required. Every selected intern still completes a federal background check application and passes a drug screen that includes marijuana, even though LLNL is in California. Some roles involve Limited Areas where personal phones aren't allowed.

Can international students intern at LLNL?

Yes, in many cases. LLNL accepts international applicants, though visa support varies by position. Most reqs require eligibility under NDAA Section 3112, which generally bars citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without US dual citizenship or permanent residency from non-public areas. Check each req's qualifications.

Is the 3.0 GPA required for LLNL internships?

It depends on the req. Seven of the 25 summer 2027 postings require a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and ten list 3.0 as a desired qualification. Computing reqs make it a must. Read each posting's qualifications rather than assuming one rule applies across the whole lab.

When will I hear back from LLNL?

Usually between December and April. LLNL says mentors call for phone interviews in that window, and Computing mentors must pick summer interns by February 5, 2027. DSSI applicants who haven't been contacted by February 9 weren't selected. Community reports describe offers about two months after the interview.

What is the LLNL Data Science Summer Institute?

DSSI is a 12-week summer program for about 30 students a year, split between a mentor research project and a team challenge problem, with courses and seminars. In 2027 it runs two cohorts, starting May 17 and June 21. Applications close at the end of day on January 15, 2027.

LLNL's summer 2027 reqs are live and the Computing deadline is fixed. Apply this fall, then use the months before interviews to finish a remote Externship you can walk a mentor through.
