If you're searching for an NREL internship, you're looking for the right lab under an old name. On December 1, 2025 the Department of Energy renamed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), and its internships moved with it. On 3 October 2026 the lab's Workday board listed 16 intern roles, mostly year-round or 3-to-12-month appointments in Golden and Boulder, Colorado. Each one stays open for "up to 30 days."
So there are two clocks here. Year-round roles open and close every few weeks right now, while summer roles have appeared from January to March in past cycles. In plain words: you apply between October 2026 and early 2027, you intern in summer 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Arceh Children's Environmental Health Analytics Externship builds the environmental data analysis NLR's research groups run every day, and the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship maps to the AI roles on the board. What Is a National Laboratory of the Rockies Internship?
A National Laboratory of the Rockies internship is a paid research appointment at the Department of Energy lab in Golden, Colorado, formerly known as NREL. Most run through the lab's Research Participant Program, which is open to undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates and pairs each intern with a mentor on an R&D project. The lab calls itself the nation's primary laboratory for energy systems research and development.
The work is specific. Live roles on the board this week cover AI for power system operations, data center load modeling for transmission planning, building energy modeling, electron microscopy and biomass conversion. The lab also offers on-site, hybrid and virtual internships, so some roles don't require a move to Golden.

When Do National Laboratory of the Rockies Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
NLR doesn't run one summer wave. Its Workday board carries a steady flow of year-round and fixed-term intern reqs: the 16 live today were posted between December 2025 and September 24, 2026, and two more that were live on 28 September have since closed. Summer-specific roles come later.
That timing doesn't come from the ATS. Past applicants on Reddit describe applying in January and February 2026 and sitting panel interviews in late February, so we expect summer 2027 roles around January to March 2027. Treat that as a low-to-medium confidence projection.
Year-round and fixed-term intern roles are open right now: 16 on the board, each open for up to 30 days. No summer 2027 roles have posted yet. Apply to any year-round role that fits instead of waiting.
DOE's SULI and CCI programs open summer 2027 applications on October 14, and NLR is a host lab. PhD students: the SCGSR application is due November 4, 2026.
SULI and CCI applications for summer 2027 are due at 5:00 PM ET, recommendations included. DOE offers begin around February 3.
Summer 2027 intern roles are expected to post on the NLR board, each with a window of about 30 days. Recruiter screens and panel interviews follow from February to April.
Summer interns start in late May or June. SULI runs 10 weeks and pays $650 a week, and the lab's own interns are paid from the posted bands.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Every NLR intern req carries the same sentence: "The anticipated closing window for application submission is up to 30 days and may be extended as needed." That's a short window. Between our 28 September check and today, two graduate roles (Digital Twin Development for Biorefinery Processes and Transportation Systems Analysis) dropped off the board, and Workday confirms both closed.
So check the board weekly and apply within days of a posting, not weeks. The DOE routes work differently: SULI and CCI are hard deadlines on January 6, 2027, with no late entry.
Which National Laboratory of the Rockies Internship Programs Should You Target?
NLR hires interns through its own program and hosts three DOE programs.
| Route | Focus | Term | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research Participant Program (year-round and fixed-term) | Live roles: AI for power systems, grid simulation, building energy, materials, chemistry | 3 to 12 months or year-round | 16 live; each open up to 30 days; up to 25 hrs/week in term for undergrads, 30 for grads |
| Research Participant Program (summer) | Mentored R&D projects across the lab | Summer 2027 | Expected Jan to Mar 2027 |
| DOE SULI | Undergraduate research at a DOE host lab | 10 weeks, summer 2027 | Opens Oct 14, 2026; due Jan 6, 2027; US citizen or permanent resident; $650/week |
| DOE CCI | Community college students | 10 weeks, summer 2027 | Opens Oct 14, 2026; due Jan 6, 2027 |
| DOE SCGSR | PhD thesis research at a DOE lab | 3 to 12 months, from June 2027 | Due Nov 4, 2026; up to $3,600/month |
Compare the routes on NLR's undergraduate and graduate internship pages. For SCGSR dates, use DOE's key dates page, since the lab's graduate table still shows older months.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
All 16 live reqs share the same basic qualifications:
• GPA: a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, stated in every req.
• Enrollment: full-time in a bachelor's, master's or PhD program, or a degree earned within the past 12 months for post-undergraduate and post-graduate roles (up to one year).
• Documents: a transcript (official or unofficial) at application, and a letter of recommendation if you're selected.
• Citizenship and screening: none of the 16 reqs has a citizenship clause, but the lab is subject to DOE access restrictions, assignments over six months need a federal PIV background investigation, and hires take a pre-employment drug test. SULI, CCI and SCGSR require US citizenship or permanent residency.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
Yes, as written. NLR lists the 3.0 cumulative GPA under Basic Qualifications on every live req, not under preferred qualifications. That's stricter wording than many labs use.
And hours are capped during the school year: 25 a week for undergraduates and 30 for graduate students, rising to 40 in summer and breaks. Roles under 20 hours a week don't get benefits.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship you can finish before summer roles post.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Python and environmental data analysis | 13 of 16 reqs ask for Python; geospatial and energy modeling roles analyze large datasets | Arceh Children's Environmental Health Analytics |
| AI and machine learning | 7 of 16 reqs, including AI for power system operations and LLM reliability | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
| Data infrastructure and databases | Thin-film automation req: data management, provenance and monitoring tools | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
Why does that matter for NLR? Its reqs are written around one project each, so a finished project in the same skill area gives a hiring team something concrete to ask you about.
What Is the National Laboratory of the Rockies Application and Interview Process Like?
NLR's process is short on paper, though the wait between steps can be long:
1. Apply on Workday. Upload a resume and transcript on the NLR board, ideally within days of the posting.
2. Recruiter screen. If you're moving forward, an email says the recruiter will contact you to schedule a phone screen.
3. Panel interview. A Teams interview with the hiring team. Community reports say some graduate interns get a single interview instead, and that interviews focus on your background and what you want to learn.
4. Offer. Offers often come by phone, followed by the recommendation letter, a background check and a drug screen.
5. Start. The hiring manager sets the start date, often within a few weeks of clearing checks for year-round roles.
So don't read silence as a no. One applicant reported a "Not selected" status update arriving about two months after applying.
What Students on Reddit Say
Most posts still say NREL, and most are on r/NREL.
An undergraduate summer applicant passed the phone screen and moved to a panel. A lab employee replied that undergrad internships are fairly competitive, that some graduate interns get in with one phone interview, and that a background check and drug screen follow the offer.
A graduate summer applicant had a panel interview in late February 2026 with no date for an answer. Others had applied in January and February, and one said a "Not selected" update arrived two months after applying.
A 10-week summer intern looking for $800 to $1,000 a month in Golden was told that's tough there, and to try roommates, Lakewood or the Denver West area, Mines sublet pages, and the GS bus that runs to the lab gate.
How Do You Stand Out at the National Laboratory of the Rockies?
NLR doesn't publish applicant numbers or a conversion rate, so we won't estimate either. There's also context worth knowing: the lab laid off 134 staff in February 2026 after at least 114 cuts in May 2025, CPR News reported. Intern hiring has continued, but it makes sense to apply through more than one door.
First, match the project, not the lab. Each req describes one group's work, so tailor your resume to its tools (Python, MATLAB, a grid simulator, a microscope). Second, stack your routes: apply to year-round roles now, file SULI or SCGSR, and watch for summer roles from January.
Third, search both names. Older guides and some job boards still say NREL, but postings live only on the NLR Workday board. And plan housing early if you get an onsite offer, because Golden is expensive.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 NREL internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and NREL now operates as the National Laboratory of the Rockies. You can apply now to the 16 year-round and fixed-term intern roles on the NLR Workday board. Summer 2027 roles are expected January to March 2027, and SULI for summer 2027 is due January 6, 2027.
Is NREL still offering internships after the name change?
Yes. The Department of Energy renamed NREL the National Laboratory of the Rockies on December 1, 2025, and the internships moved with it. On 3 October 2026 the lab's Workday board listed 16 intern roles: 4 open to current undergraduates, 3 for recent bachelor's graduates and 9 for graduate students.
When should I apply for a summer 2027 NLR internship?
Watch two windows. Summer-specific roles have appeared from January to March in past cycles, so expect them around then in 2027, each open about 30 days. The DOE SULI and CCI routes open October 14, 2026 and close January 6, 2027. Year-round roles are open now.
How much do NLR interns earn?
The lab posts annual bands on a full-time basis: $34,800 to $55,700 for undergraduate roles, $39,600 to $63,400 for post-undergraduate roles and $44,500 to $71,200 for most graduate roles, up to $81,900 for one AI role. Divided by 2,080 hours, that's roughly $17 to $34 an hour.
What GPA does NLR require?
A 3.0 cumulative GPA. Every live intern req lists it under Basic Qualifications, so treat it as a firm minimum rather than a preference. You also upload a transcript with your application, and a letter of recommendation is required if you're selected for the role. DOE's SULI program also asks for a 3.0.
Do I need to be a US citizen to intern at NLR?
Not for the lab's own roles, as written. None of the 16 live reqs has a citizenship clause, but all hires face DOE access restrictions, and assignments over six months need a federal PIV background investigation. SULI, CCI and SCGSR require US citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
Are NLR internships remote?
Some are. The lab offers on-site, hybrid and virtual internships, and 7 of the 16 live reqs list a remote site alongside Golden or Boulder. Most roles are based at the Golden campus, and one graduate role is based in Los Angeles. Check each req's location block before you apply.
Did the layoffs stop intern hiring at NLR?
No, not based on the board. CPR News reported the lab cut 134 staff in February 2026 after at least 114 in May 2025, yet 16 intern roles were live in early October 2026. Apply through several routes, including SULI, to improve your odds rather than relying on one posting.
NLR's year-round roles close fast and its summer roles come later. Apply to what's open now, file SULI before January 6, 2027, and use the months in between to finish a remote Externship you can talk through in a panel interview.
