The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston posted its first summer 2027 internship requisition on 21 September 2026, about three months earlier than the mid-December timing its own careers page describes. One summer internship and one spring co-op are open today, both in Digital Money and Payments Research & Development, and the posting shows no closing date. Interns are paid $18 to $36 an hour, set by undergraduate or graduate year and experience, for a May or June to August 2027 internship. In plain words: you apply between now and spring 2027, one department's requisition at a time, and you intern in summer 2027. This guide covers the Boston Fed only; the Board of Governors in Washington and the other eleven Reserve Banks hire separately.

What Is a Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Internship?

A Boston Fed internship is a paid, full-time student placement at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, one of the 12 Reserve Banks that, with the Board of Governors, form the U.S. central bank. The bank has served the First Federal Reserve District, which covers Connecticut except Fairfield County, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, since 1914. Interns work in a department such as research, payments or technology, with mentoring, workshops and networking, and the bank also runs co-ops with Northeastern University and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Its work spans monetary policy, supervision, financial services and payments including the FedNow Service.

When Do Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Boston Fed posts one requisition at a time on the shared Federal Reserve System Careers site, so there is no single opening date. The bank's page says summer internships are "typically posted ... beginning in mid-December," and a Reddit poster on 21 December 2025 saw Internal Audit and FedNow Product Management summer requisitions open. This cycle the first requisition appeared on 21 September 2026, about 8 months before a May or June start, against roughly 5.5 months last cycle. Because the calendar moved, treat later dates as low confidence.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

The Summer Intern: Digital Money and Payments Research & Development requisition (R-0000033442) has been open since 21 September 2026 for a May or June to August 2027 internship, and a matching Spring Co-op (R-0000033444) runs January to July 2027. The other four Boston requisitions open now aren't student roles.

Applying now? Build proof for the requisition's project-management and delivery asks: the BeReal Product Management Externship or the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship.
December 2026 onwardEXPECTED

Expected: more departmental summer 2027 requisitions, since the bank's page says summer internships are typically posted beginning in mid-December. In December 2025, Internal Audit and FedNow Product Management were among the open requisitions.

Spring 2027EXPECTED

Expected: Research Department summer internships. Its FAQ says applications are accepted annually beginning in the spring for a late-May start, and a commenter in December 2025 said economics research intern recruiting has usually been in spring.

March–April 2027EXPECTED

Expected: interviews. In 2024, applicants reported research-department interviews in March and were still waiting in early April. The bank says timelines vary because of the volume of applications.

May/June–August 2027

Summer interns start in May or June and typically work 10 to 12 weeks. The post-graduation Research Associate Program, a separate two-year program, recruits each fall for positions that begin the following June.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

The Boston Fed's requisition shows no closing date, so we can't tell you how long a posting stays up, and we won't give you a deadline the bank hasn't published. What we can say is that postings arrive one department at a time and the live one has already been open since September, so apply as soon as a requisition matches your field. Check the Workday board on a schedule from now through spring, and read the citizenship and eligibility lines on each requisition, since they differ.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility comes from the live requisitions and the Boston Fed's program pages, and it varies by requisition.

• Enrollment: the open requisition is for students currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate studies. The bank-wide summer program is open to students who have finished their sophomore year by the start.

• Field: the requisition prefers government and politics, business, economics, finance, law or engineering. The Research Department looks for economics, finance, statistics or mathematics.

• Residency: the individual is expected to reside in the First District, and the position is primarily on-site.

• Citizenship: it varies. The open requisition states no rule. An archived summer 2026 Research Department software requisition said confidential supervisory information was limited to "Protected Individuals", meaning U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and certain permanent residents. Read each requisition.

• Checks: offers are subject to FBI fingerprint and criminal background checks and Patriot Act and OFAC watch list checks at least once every five years.

• Ethics rule: employees, their spouses or domestic partners and minor children generally can't own stocks or bonds of banks, savings associations or systemically important financial institutions. Raise it with recruiting if you couldn't divest.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

The requisitions we read state no GPA minimum. A commenter on a system-wide Reddit thread said grades are a primary filter for Federal Reserve internships, which is one student's view and not a Boston rule. The requisition does ask for excellent written and oral communication and self-motivation, so tailor your application to the team.

What Skills Does the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

One summer requisition is live, and it's specific. It asks for project management, a sophisticated user of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and strong written and oral communication, with good interpersonal skills and initiative. Desirable qualifications include a working knowledge of the Federal Reserve System, a grasp of money, banking, payments and finance, and an understanding of technology development, coding and big data. Duties include building reports for senior management and supporting agile delivery and program-increment planning.

Note: Skill chart not shown: only one summer 2027 Boston Fed internship requisition (and its identical spring co-op) was open on 16 October 2026, so there isn't a sample to count. The skills above are quoted from requisition R-0000033442, read that day.

What Is the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the Boston Fed's careers pages and the Workday requisition.

1. Browse the verified board. Open Federal Reserve System Careers and filter the hiring company to Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The bank warns that fake postings exist.

2. Apply per requisition. Each department posts its own, so apply to each one that fits your field.

3. Interview. The bank describes a structured process that may include a mix of one-on-one and panel interviews with team members and bank leaders.

How Do You Stand Out for a Boston Fed Internship?

First, match one requisition: the live posting names project management, Office tools and clear communication, so show those with a specific project. Second, learn the system. The requisition lists working knowledge of the Federal Reserve as desirable, so read how the Boston Fed describes its payments and research work. Third, if you want economics research, plan for the spring and build the statistics and programming the Research Department lists. The bank doesn't publish applicant counts, class sizes or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Federal Reserve Bank of Boston internship?

No. The summer 2026 requisitions are closed; the Public Affairs summer 2026 requisition, for example, is no longer available on Workday. What's open now is the Summer Intern: Digital Money and Payments R&D requisition for summer 2027, posted 21 September 2026, plus a spring 2027 co-op.

When do Federal Reserve Bank of Boston summer internship applications open?

The first summer 2027 requisition went live on 21 September 2026. The bank's page says summer internships are typically posted beginning in mid-December, so expect more departmental requisitions through the winter. The Research Department says its applications begin in spring. Requisitions state no closing date.

How much does the Boston Fed pay interns?

The summer 2027 requisition states $18 to $36 an hour, with the actual rate set by undergraduate or graduate year and relevant experience. The bank describes its internships as paid, and you should expect the rate to vary with your year in school. We use only the bank's own figure.

Where do I apply for a Boston Fed internship?

Apply on the Federal Reserve System Careers site, which runs on Workday and carries all 12 Reserve Banks, by filtering the hiring company to Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Northeastern and Wentworth co-ops are posted on those schools' portals. The bank warns about fake Federal Reserve postings.

Who is eligible for a Boston Fed internship?

Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. The bank-wide summer program is open to students who have finished their sophomore year, and the open requisition expects you to live in the First District. Citizenship and field requirements vary by requisition, so read each one before applying.

The Boston Fed serves Connecticut except Fairfield County, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Do Boston Fed interns get return offers?

The bank publishes no conversion rate. Its requisition says the program identifies talented and qualified candidates who could potentially fill professional job openings in the bank. The Research Associate Program, a two-year post-graduation role that recruits each fall, is the usual next step for economics and quantitative students.

One requisition is open now and more are expected from December, so build your application around the project-management and communication asks. Check the Workday board often, and if you want a finished project to put on your resume, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
