The Federal Reserve Board's summer 2027 internship applications are open right now, and several close on Sunday 1 November 2026. On 16 October 2026 the Board's careers site listed 16 intern postings, 13 of them for summer 2027, from economic research to IT, audit and consumer compliance, all based in Washington, DC. Pay on the postings runs from $26.68 to $33.65 an hour, the Board hires roughly 100 interns each summer, and only U.S. citizens can apply. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. This is the Board of Governors, not a regional Reserve Bank; the banks in New York, Philadelphia and elsewhere hire separately.

What Is a Federal Reserve Board Internship?

A Federal Reserve Board internship is a paid, 10 to 12 week summer role at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the agency in Washington, DC that oversees the U.S. central bank. The Board says it employs roughly 100 interns each summer, mostly in economic research but also in IT, audit, communications, consumer compliance and business operations. Interns get a syllabus with learning objectives, a supervisor or mentor, and access to training and weekly intern events. The Board is separate from the 12 regional Reserve Banks, which run their own internship programs and career sites.

When Do Federal Reserve Board Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Board says most internship postings go up each September for the following summer, with virtual interviews through the fall and offers finalized by December. This year the summer 2027 postings went live between 9 and 15 October 2026, a few weeks later than September. That's about 7.5 to 8 months before a late May or early June start, and the economic research posting gives applicants roughly two and a half weeks, from 14 October to 1 November.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREHARD DEADLINE

Summer 2027 applications are open. Of 16 intern postings on 16 October 2026, 13 are for summer 2027 (economic research, IT, audit, communications, consumer compliance and business operations), one is a part-time Spring 2027 IT audit role and two are year-round.

30 October–1 November 2026HARD DEADLINE

The year-round business operations posting ends 30 October. Economic research, Data and AI Analyst, Integrated Technology Solutions, Consumer Compliance and the graduate public outreach posting end 1 November, a Sunday. Economic research needs one recommendation letter by then.

Mid-November 2026–early January 2027

The economic research posting says most interviews and offers happen in this window. The Board's internships page says virtual interviews run through the fall semester and offers are finalized by December.

Late May–early June 2027

Summer 2027 interns start for 10 to 12 weeks at the Board in Washington, DC. Economic research interns who perform well get priority consideration for 2027 Research Assistant openings, where graduation timing aligns.

~September–October 2027EXPECTED

Expected: summer 2028 postings, projected from the Board's "each September" statement and this year's October posting dates. Treat the month as a guide and check the careers site.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Several of these are hard deadlines, and the economic research posting needs more than a resume. You attach a cover letter and transcript and provide one recommendation letter by 1 November 2026, so ask your recommender today. Six of the 16 postings carry an end date, and the other ten show none, which isn't the same as staying open. Interviews begin as early as mid-November, so a posting you leave until the last weekend may already be moving. Apply to every posting that fits, not just one.

Which Federal Reserve Board Internship Programs Should You Target?

Applications are posting by posting, and each lists its own requirements. These are the main groups.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

These rules come from the Board's internships page and the postings we read on 16 October 2026.

• Citizenship: "Employment in the Board's summer internship program is granted to U.S. citizens." Every posting repeats it.

• Enrollment: currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university and returning to continue studies after the internship. Proof of enrollment is required.

• Graduation timing: summer 2027 postings ask for graduation in August 2027 or later. The part-time Spring 2027 IT audit role asks for May 2027 or later.

• Experience: the postings we read list 0 years of minimum experience.

• Documents: a resume and unofficial transcript on most postings; economic research and Data and AI Analyst also ask for a cover letter, and economic research needs one recommendation letter. OIG audit and graphic design postings ask for two letters.

• Relocation: not provided, so plan your own housing in the Washington, DC area.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

No GPA minimum is stated. The Board selects on "scholastic achievement, recommendations, completed coursework in relevant areas of study, and, in some cases, grade point average." Your transcript and coursework matter, and an economics, statistics or computing sequence helps on the research and IT postings. Business operations and communications postings lean on writing and Office skills instead.

What Skills Does the Federal Reserve Board Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Skills depend on the posting. Across all 16, the most common asks are clear written and verbal communication, problem solving and analytical thinking, and programming or scripting in Python, R, SQL or PowerShell. Economic research treats Stata, R, Python, Matlab, SAS or machine learning as a plus, not a requirement. The IT postings name Linux, cloud, Git, Terraform and AI coding tools, and the OIG postings stress data analysis, professional skepticism and Excel.

None of these Externships is connected to the Federal Reserve Board. They help because a finished project gives your cover letter and interview answers something specific to point to.

What Is the Federal Reserve Board Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the Board's internships page and the postings.

1. Find the postings. On the Board's careers page click Start Job Search and choose Job Category "Intern Group". Review each posting, since requirements differ.

2. Build your profile. Attach your resume, cover letter where asked, and an unofficial transcript before you submit. Economic research needs one recommendation letter, academic or professional, by the deadline. OIG audit needs two.

3. Review and interviews. Applications are reviewed after the posting closes. Virtual interviews run through the fall, and for economic research most interviews and offers happen between mid-November and early January.

4. Offer and start. Offers are finalized by December. For economic research, one application enters you for about 15+ internships, and project details and matching are explained to those chosen to interview.

Every posting warns applicants to use only the Board's career site or verified Board channels, so don't apply through third-party links.

What Students on Reddit Say

First-hand posts about the Board specifically are thin, so these cards also include Fed-system threads and say so.

Applicants to the Board's DC internships in the summer 2026 cycle compared notes. One reported an interview about a month after applying, while others said DC applications stayed "under review" with no contact for weeks.

An applicant who interviewed with the Board and the New York Fed said a Board economist told them he had read 200+ applications for one spot, and guessed that offers go to roughly 15 to 25 people across research teams. A 2020 anecdote, not a Board figure.

On a thread about regional Reserve Banks, not the Board, commenters said different groups hire different roles, from research to data science and community development, and that grades are a primary filter for research roles.

How Do You Stand Out for a Federal Reserve Board Internship?

First, apply to every posting that fits. One economic research application enters you for about 15+ internships across four divisions, so a strong cover letter and recommendation matter more than tailoring. Second, line up your recommender now; economic research requires the letter by 1 November. Third, don't skip the non-research tracks. IT, audit, communications and consumer compliance postings exist, so non-economics majors have a route. The Board publishes its class size (roughly 100) but not applicant counts or a conversion rate.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

Students targeting the Federal Reserve Board often also apply to these central-bank and international finance institutions. The regional Reserve Banks hire separately from the Board.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Federal Reserve Board internship?

No. The summer 2026 postings have ended. What's open now is summer 2027: on 16 October 2026 the Board's careers site listed 13 summer 2027 intern postings, and several close on 1 November 2026. Apply through the Board's own site, and don't rely on old summer 2026 listings.

When do Federal Reserve Board internship applications open?

The Board says most internship postings go up each September for the following summer. For summer 2027 they appeared between 9 and 15 October 2026. We expect summer 2028 postings around September to October 2027, which is a projection based on those two data points, not a confirmed date.

What is the Federal Reserve Board internship deadline?

It varies by posting. Economic research, Data and AI Analyst, Integrated Technology Solutions and Consumer Compliance close on 1 November 2026, and the year-round business operations role closes 30 October. Ten of the 16 postings show no end date, so apply early rather than assuming they stay open.

How much does a Federal Reserve Board intern earn?

Most postings list $26.68 to $33.65 an hour, which maps to FH pay grades 20 to 22. The six IT postings list $26.68 to $28.37, and the OIG graphic design intern lists $30.80. Relocation isn't provided. The Board says pay is commensurate with the credit hours you've completed.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen?

Yes. The Board says employment in its summer internship program is granted to U.S. citizens, and every posting repeats it. You must also be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and returning to school afterward. International students should look at institutions that recruit globally, such as the IMF or World Bank.

Is the Federal Reserve Board the same as the New York Fed?

No. The Board of Governors in Washington, DC is a separate employer from the 12 regional Reserve Banks, including New York and Philadelphia. Each has its own career site, postings, deadlines and application. Applying to one doesn't apply you to the others, so track each calendar separately.

Can non-economics majors apply?

Yes. Alongside economic research, the Board posted IT, audit, graphic design, communications, consumer compliance and business operations internships. Fields named include computer science, information technology, accounting and public administration. Each posting lists its own suggested majors and skills, so read it before applying.

Does a Federal Reserve Board internship lead to a job?

Possibly. Economic research interns get priority consideration for Research Assistant openings, given positive summer performance and aligned graduation timing. The Research Assistant role is a two-year program for recent graduates. The Board doesn't publish an intern conversion rate, so treat it as a strong credential, not a guarantee.

Several summer 2027 postings close on 1 November 2026, so ask your recommender and submit your applications this month. If you want a finished project to point to in your cover letter, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
