The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's flagship student program is a 10-week internship that's unpaid, requires U.S. citizenship and a 2.5 GPA, and runs three times a year with application windows of about five weeks. No SEC student announcement is open today: Spring 2027 closed on 3 September 2026. The SEC Scholars Program summer 2026 announcement ran from 1 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, so summer 2027 is expected to open around 1 December 2026. In plain words: you apply around December 2026, you intern in summer 2027. This guide is about the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, not the Southeastern Conference.

Externships are short remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds financial-statement and valuation skills, and the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you a public-sector data project. What Is an SEC Internship?
An SEC internship usually means the SEC Scholars Program, the agency's premier student program: a 10-week placement for undergraduate, graduate, law (1L to 3L) and LLM students. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was founded in 1934 to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly and efficient markets and help companies raise capital. Business students support auditing, contracting, finance, human resources, information technology and securities regulation work. Law students support litigation, drafting regulations, reviews and outreach. A separate, paid Pathways Internship exists but nothing is posted now.

When Do SEC Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The SEC publishes a tentative timeline for each term. Summer 2026 opened 1 December 2025 and closed 5 January 2026, Fall 2026 ran 12 March to 16 April 2026, and Spring 2027 opened 23 July and was extended from 27 August to 3 September 2026. Applications for summer 2026 opened about 5.6 months before the first entrance on duty on 18 May 2026. Summer 2027 isn't on the SEC's table yet, so the dates below are projections and closes can move.
Between windows. Spring 2027 announcements closed on 3 September 2026, and USAJOBS shows no SEC student listing open today. Set a USAJOBS notification now, and start the writing sample.
Prepare the package: a 2-page resume, cover letter, writing sample of up to 10 pages with no non-public information, an unofficial transcript and proof of enrollment. The SEC held four information sessions in August before its Spring 2027 close and is likely to hold similar ones.
Summer 2027 SEC Scholars announcements are expected on USAJOBS, usually as four listings: Business headquarters, Business regional offices, Legal headquarters and Legal regional offices. The SEC hasn't published these dates.
Expected: selection in February, then a background investigation in March and April, based on the summer 2026 timeline.
Expected: entrance on duty around mid to late May and early June 2027 for 10 weeks. The program is unpaid and can't convert to a permanent position.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The windows are short and fixed. Summer 2026 stayed open about five weeks, the SEC says it "is unable to accept applications outside of the application window," and applications aren't transferable between locations. Spring 2027 was extended one week, so a close can move, but don't count on that. Apply in week one so a technical problem or a missing document doesn't cost you the term.
Which SEC Internship Programs Should You Target?
The SEC keeps its student routes separate, and they differ in pay and conversion.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEC Scholars Program: Business (unpaid) | Auditing, contracting, finance, human resources, IT and securities regulation projects | 10 weeks, 16+ hours a week | Writing, finance or accounting, data, IT |
| SEC Scholars Program: Legal (unpaid) | Litigation support, drafting regulations, reviews, exams and public outreach, reviewing corporate documents | 10 weeks, 16+ hours a week | Legal writing and research |
| Pathways Internship Program (paid) | Paid student trainee appointments; Career Intern may convert, Temporary Intern is one year or less | Per announcement | Per announcement; none posted |
| Chairman's Attorney Honors Program | Hiring route for third-year law students and clerks, not an internship | Not applicable | Legal writing |
The SEC lists its programs on its students and recent graduates page. Pathways interns need at least half-time enrollment and 640 hours to be eligible for conversion; the SEC posts no Pathways announcement today and lists no grade or salary for it.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Rules come from the SEC Scholars page and the Spring 2027 USAJOBS announcements.
• Citizenship: you must be a U.S. citizen.
• Enrollment: a current student, at least half-time, in an accredited degree or certificate program, who keeps student status during the internship. For Spring 2027 the announcements also asked for a planned graduation no earlier than May 2027.
• GPA: minimum 2.5 cumulative on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
• Age and registration: at least 16, and men born after 31 December 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
• Screening: a pre-employment suitability investigation applies, and drug testing may be required. Relatives of SEC employees can participate if they aren't in the direct chain of command.

Is the Program Really Unpaid?
Yes. The SEC page says Scholars is currently an unpaid program, and the Spring 2027 announcements showed a salary of $0 and no health, life, retirement or vacation benefits, plus a transportation subsidy that may be available. Interns are volunteers, not federal employees, except for injury compensation. Ask your school about academic credit, which the SEC suggests.
What Skills Does the SEC Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The SEC lists the fields of study it's looking for in its announcements: accounting, business administration, communications, computer science, cybersecurity, data science, engineering, finance, government, human resources, information technology, international affairs, journalism, marketing, mathematics, political science, project management and more. Writing is the one skill every applicant proves, through the cover letter and writing sample. Law applicants also submit legal writing.
Note: Note: the SEC had no student announcement open on 16 October 2026. The four closed Spring 2027 announcements use the same field-of-study list, so counting them would show 4 of 4 for every skill and tell you nothing about priorities.
How Is Demand for Finance Interns Moving Right Now?
Finance intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 336 in August
For SEC applicants: Finance intern hiring picked up sharply in September; apply within the first week a role posts, while the most seats are open.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (60 postings in September, 57 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row links an SEC office or field to a remote Externship that gives you a project for the writing sample or resume.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Finance, accounting and valuation | Divisions such as Corporation Finance and the Office of the Chief Accountant; fields: accounting, finance | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship |
| Data and policy analysis | Economic and Risk Analysis, Chief Data Officer and Investor Education offices; field: data science | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship |
| Cybersecurity and IT | Office of Information Technology; fields: cybersecurity and information technology | vCISO Cybersecurity Risk Assessment Externship |
None of these Externships is connected to the SEC. They give you a finished project, which helps with a resume and writing sample for an unpaid, competitive program.
What Is the SEC Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the SEC Scholars page and its USAJOBS announcements.
1. Set up USAJOBS. Create an account and a saved search for the Securities and Exchange Commission with the Students hiring path.
2. Apply to the right listings. You are only considered for the offices and locations you apply to, and you rank your top three offices.
3. Submit by 11:59 PM ET on the close date. Include the resume, cover letter, writing sample, transcript and proof of enrollment.
4. Referral, interview and background check. Status moves to "referred" in USAJOBS, then interviews, selection and a background investigation before entrance on duty.
Each session has two reporting dates for orientation.
What Students on Reddit Say
Past applicants on Reddit describe a fit-driven process and a slow wait on USAJOBS.
A past summer intern said the program isn't driven by school name: fit and earlier government or public-interest experience matter, and the intern classes mixed top-ranked and mid-ranked law schools. Single commenter.
Former Scholars called it a solid government internship with strong connections and a light workload, and one said they got academic credit. These are opinions from a few commenters, not facts.
In late 2025, applicants said a government funding lapse rescheduled interviews, business-track applicants waited on "referred" status, and one New York office intern reported flexible hours between 20 and 40 a week.
How Do You Stand Out for an SEC Internship?
First, treat the writing sample as the real application: it can run up to 10 pages and can't contain non-public information. Second, rank your top three divisions to match your field, for example data and economics, corporate finance or IT. Third, show government or public-interest interest in your cover letter, since commenters say fit counts. The SEC publishes no class size, acceptance rate or Pathways conversion rate, and Scholars can't convert to a permanent job.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 SEC internship?
No. The summer 2026 SEC Scholars announcement closed on 5 January 2026, and the cohort began in May and June 2026. Nothing is open now: Spring 2027 closed 3 September 2026. Summer 2027 is expected to open about 1 December 2026, so set a USAJOBS notification.
Are SEC internships paid?
The SEC Scholars Program is unpaid. The SEC page calls it "currently an unpaid program," and Spring 2027 postings were titled "(Volunteer)." Paid Pathways Internship appointments exist as a separate route, but no SEC Pathways announcement is open today and no grade or salary is published.
When do SEC summer 2027 internship applications open?
The SEC hasn't published them. Based on summer 2026, which opened 1 December 2025 and closed 5 January 2026, expect about 1 December 2026 to early January 2027. The SEC's own timeline is tentative, and Spring 2027 was extended a week, so closes can move.
Can non-citizens apply?
No. The SEC Scholars page requires participants to be U.S. citizens, and the USAJOBS announcements repeat that rule. International students and permanent residents aren't eligible for this program, so look at other institutions that recruit globally, such as the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.
What GPA do I need?
A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. You must also be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited degree or certificate program and keep student status during the internship. Submit your most recent unofficial transcript with proof of current enrollment.
Is the SEC internship remote?
No. Interns work onsite at least 16 hours a week, and the Spring 2027 announcement said the internship isn't remote. Positions are at Washington, DC headquarters or regional offices. Relocation expenses aren't paid, and you are only considered for the offices you apply to.
Can an SEC internship convert to a full-time job?
Not for SEC Scholars: positions aren't eligible for conversion to permanent positions, and the appointment doesn't confer non-competitive eligibility. A Pathways Internship may convert after 640 hours and degree completion. The SEC doesn't publish a conversion rate, and no Pathways listing is open now.
Where are SEC internships located?
Washington, DC headquarters plus regional offices. The SEC's overview names Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, among 10 other cities. Regional offices primarily represent the Division of Enforcement and the Division of Examinations. Apply to each location separately, because applications don't transfer.
No SEC listing is open today, but the summer 2027 window is expected around 1 December 2026. Set your USAJOBS notification and draft your writing sample now, and if you want a finished project to cite, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
