The FDIC's Financial Institution Intern (FII) applications are open on USAJOBS right now and close on Friday 30 October 2026. Two announcements went up, Risk Management on 19 October and Compliance on 20 October, for paid internships that begin in May 2027. Both list pay of $53,241 to $69,019 (Risk Management) or $71,748 (Compliance) a year, ask for two completed academic years and a 3.0 GPA, and require U.S. citizenship. In plain words: you apply by 30 October 2026, you intern from May 2027. The FDIC's own FII page was updated on 19 October to match, so older advice that quotes a 3.4 GPA or a junior-year rule is out of date.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks (range 4–11) at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the financial statement analysis examiners use, and the vCISO Cybersecurity Risk Assessment Externship adds the risk-assessment practice behind the FDIC's IT tracks. What Is an FDIC Internship?

An FDIC internship is a paid student placement at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the independent agency Congress created to maintain stability and public confidence in the nation's financial system. The main program, Financial Institution Intern, puts accounting, business, economics and finance students on on-site bank examinations in either Risk Management or Compliance. Separate tracks serve scholars, IT students, law students and PhD researchers.

The FDIC insures bank deposits, examines and supervises financial institutions, makes large institutions resolvable and manages receiverships. By its own account, no insured depositor has lost money in a bank failure since deposit insurance began on 1 January 1934. This guide covers the FDIC only; the Federal Reserve, OCC and CFPB are separate employers with their own programs.

When Do FDIC Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The FDIC's two FII announcements on USAJOBS give exact dates: Risk Management opened Monday 19 October 2026 and Compliance opened Tuesday 20 October, and both close Friday 30 October 2026. Internships begin in May 2027, about six months after the window closes. A school career-center copy of an FDIC notice had listed the full-time Financial Institution Specialist window as 5 to 9 October, but USAJOBS shows those announcements ran 5 to 13 and 8 to 14 October, so we go by USAJOBS.

Last cycle's calendar isn't published. An archived copy of the FII page from 13 January 2026 showed no vacancies in any region, and a Reddit post shows a student holding an FDIC summer offer by early January 2024. We therefore expect the next window in fall 2027, with low confidence.

Both FII announcements are accepting applications until Friday 30 October 2026. Submit your resume, unofficial transcript and proof of enrollment, then complete the questionnaire.

While you finish, the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds financial statement analysis, and the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you public-sector data work to describe in an interview.

The Risk Management announcement opened on 19 October and the Compliance announcement on 20 October, both on USAJOBS.

Friday 30 October 2026HARD DEADLINE

Both announcements close at the end of the day. Applicants who qualify are placed in Best Qualified, Highly Qualified or Qualified categories, and USA Hire assessments follow; the announcement says to finish them within 48 hours of receiving the link if it arrives after the close.

May 2027

Internships begin per the announcements. Applications for the following cycle are expected in fall 2027, with low confidence.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

The window is short and fixed. A USAJOBS announcement closes on its stated date whether or not you're ready, and these two close on Friday 30 October 2026. Federal applications also take longer than a standard form, because you answer a questionnaire and upload a transcript and proof of enrollment.

If you haven't started, finish your USAJOBS profile and upload an unofficial transcript now, and confirm the gates: two full academic years completed by the closing date, a 3.0 GPA and a listed major. Choose the announcement that matches your interest, Risk Management or Compliance, and submit well before the last evening.

Which FDIC Internship Programs Should You Target?

The FDIC runs several student programs with different eligibility and no shared calendar. Here's where each stood on 25 October 2026.

The Financial Institution Specialist (FIS) role is a full-time position for recent graduates, not an internship, and its USAJOBS announcements closed on 13 and 14 October 2026. See the FDIC careers hub for every student program.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The two FII announcements and the FDIC's FII page (updated 19 October 2026) list these requirements:

• Citizenship: U.S. citizenship is required, and males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.

• Enrollment: a degree-seeking student at an accredited college or university, enrolled or accepted for enrollment full or half time, in good academic standing.

• Class year: two full academic years completed by the closing date, 30 October 2026.

• Major: accounting, banking, business administration, commercial or banking law, economics, finance, marketing or a related field, documented on your transcript or proof of enrollment. The FDIC page says three accounting credits are preferred.

• GPA: at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; OPM rounding makes a 2.95 count as 3.0.

• Background and agreements: a National Agency Check (NACI) and the Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement and Financial Institution Examiner Agreement.

• Travel and housing: up to 75% travel; interns provide their own housing and transportation to exam sites, and travel expenses are reimbursed.

Has the FDIC Changed Its Requirements?

Yes, more than once. An archived copy of the FII page from 13 January 2026 asked for a completed sophomore year and a 3.25 GPA. When we read the page on 16 October it asked for a completed junior year, three accounting credits and a 3.4 GPA. The page updated on 19 October and both USAJOBS announcements say two full academic years and a 3.0 GPA, with accounting credits preferred.

Use the USAJOBS announcement as the final word, not older blog posts. The Financial Management Scholars program still lists a 3.25 GPA, which is a separate requirement.

What Skills Does the FDIC Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Both FII announcements assess the same 12 competencies: attention to detail, flexibility, interpersonal skills, learning, problem solving, self-management, technology application, writing, oral communication, accounting, reasoning and arithmetic. The duties add specifics. Risk Management interns review financial statements, test income and expense accounts, compute capital ratios and review liquidity. Compliance interns check disclosures and lending files against rules such as Truth in Savings, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, Fair Credit Reporting and the Community Reinvestment Act.

What Is the FDIC Application and Interview Process Like?

The FDIC doesn't publish an interview guide for FII, but the USAJOBS announcements lay out the application steps:

1. Apply on USAJOBS. Choose Risk Management or Compliance and upload a two-page resume, an unofficial transcript and proof of enrollment for the current or upcoming semester.

2. Answer the questionnaire. The announcements link a preview of the questions on USAStaffing, so you can read them before you start.

3. Complete the USA Hire assessments. Qualified applicants get a link; if it arrives after the closing date, the announcement says to finish within 48 hours.

4. Get ranked. Applicants are placed in Best Qualified, Highly Qualified or Qualified categories, with veterans' preference applied inside each category.

5. Clear the background check and sign the agreements. The NACI and the two FDIC agreements are conditions of employment, ahead of a May 2027 start.

Interview format for FII isn't published by the FDIC. Prepare for questions on your accounting coursework and why you want bank supervision work.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit has little recent first-hand discussion of the FDIC's internships, and older threads cover earlier versions of the programs:

In January 2024, a sophomore weighing an FDIC Risk Management summer offer in New York against a software internship said the software pay was almost double. A commenter identifying as an FDIC examiner replied that interns can be offered part-time or school-break work and a post-graduation specialist role.

A former intern in a 2018 thread said the work was mostly compliance regulation and specific financial accounting rather than typical finance coursework, that the program gave out a lot of offers, and that it paid well for the public sector but was competitive to get into.

How Do You Stand Out for an FDIC Internship?

Three moves, based on how the announcements are written.

First, clear the hard gates and submit complete materials. Both announcements say an application missing a transcript is rated ineligible, and the resume must show employer, hours per week, dates and your GPA.

Second, show you can handle fieldwork. Examinations happen on site at banks, sometimes far from the office, with up to 75% travel and your own transportation. Say plainly that you're willing to travel.

Third, show accounting and writing skills in your materials, since both are assessed. The FDIC doesn't publish class sizes or an acceptance rate, so there's no figure to quote.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 FDIC internship?

No. Summer 2026 recruiting is over, and an archived January 2026 copy of the FII page showed no vacancies in any region. The open window is for internships starting May 2027: the Risk Management and Compliance announcements on USAJOBS close Friday 30 October 2026, so apply this week.

When do FDIC internship applications open for 2027?

They already have. The Risk Management announcement opened 19 October 2026 and Compliance opened 20 October, and both close Friday 30 October. Internships begin in May 2027. The next cycle is expected to open in fall 2027, though only one cycle is documented, so treat that as low confidence.

What GPA does the FDIC require for interns?

The FII announcements require a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, with OPM rounding so 2.95 counts. Financial Management Scholars requires 3.25, and IT Pathways and Legal Intern each ask for 2.5. Earlier versions of the FII page asked for 3.25 and then 3.4, so rely on the current announcement.

How much does an FDIC intern make?

The USAJOBS announcements list $53,241 to $69,019 a year for Risk Management and $53,241 to $71,748 for Compliance, at grade CG-4. The range includes base pay plus locality, which varies from 17.06% to 51.75% by duty location. Travel expenses are reimbursed, but interns arrange their own housing.

Do I need accounting courses to apply to the FDIC?

Not as a hard rule. The FDIC's FII page says three credits in accounting are preferred, and the announcements require a major in accounting, banking, business, economics, finance, marketing or a related field. Both announcements assess accounting and arithmetic, so accounting coursework helps your assessment.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to intern at the FDIC?

Yes. Both FII announcements list U.S. citizenship as a condition of employment, the FDIC runs a National Agency Check on interns, and males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service. International students should look at employers that sponsor visas.

Does an FDIC internship lead to a full-time job?

It can. The announcements say you may be non-competitively converted to a Financial Institution Specialist role after completing the program, but conversion isn't automatic or guaranteed and depends on FDIC needs. The FDIC publishes no conversion rate, so treat the wording as permissive, not a promise.

Where do FDIC FII interns work?

The Risk Management announcement lists 51 FDIC locations across 33 states, from Hoover, Alabama to Seattle, and Compliance lists 9 locations such as San Francisco, Atlanta and Raleigh. Bank examinations are on site, with up to 75% travel, and you provide your own housing and transportation to exam sites.

If you miss the 30 October window, the next FII cycle is expected in fall 2027, which leaves you a year to build proof. A remote Externship in financial analysis or risk gives your application a finished project to point to.
