TL;DR

• Will AI replace sales jobs? Not most of them: BLS projects services sales reps to grow 2.7% (2025-35) while cashiers fall 6.5% and customer service reps 5.3%. Scripted, transactional work shrinks; consultative selling holds.

• AI already researches prospects, drafts outreach, answers routine support chats and plans store shifts. People still run discovery, negotiate and own the relationship.

• B2B and technical sales, retail buying and brand management are growing. Customer support, checkout lanes and template outreach are shrinking.

• The move now: get comfortable with AI prospecting and CRM tools, then prove you can run a real conversation with a real customer.

Externships are short, remote professional experience programs where you work on real projects for real companies, with guidance from people in the field. For sales, retail and consumer goods, the Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights Externship, the Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships & Growth Externship and the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship put you on the customer and business side of the work. Explore all Externships.

Will AI Replace Sales Jobs?

Mostly no. But it depends a lot on which sales job you mean. Scripted, transactional roles like customer support and checkout are shrinking. Consultative roles, where someone has to understand a buyer's problem and earn their trust, are holding or growing. "Sales" covers both, which is why the headlines contradict each other.

The Short Answer

Will AI replace sales jobs? Not most of them. AI is absorbing the scripted parts of selling (prospect research, first-touch email, routine support chats), while BLS still projects growth for services sales reps, technical sales reps, buyers and sales managers through 2035. The honest verdict for sales, retail and consumer goods is "transforming," with customer service, cashier and scripted retail roles clearly shrinking.

Our author spent years in recruitment process outsourcing before joining Extern, on the side of the table that screens sales candidates. That view still shapes how we read this question.

And when students ask us "is sales safe from AI?", they're usually picturing one of two very different jobs: a call-center script or a long B2B deal. AI treats those two jobs completely differently. For the cross-industry view, start with our guide to jobs AI won't replace.

The AI Exposure Scorecard for Sales and Retail

Every article in this series uses the same five rows. For sales, exposure is very high almost everywhere, but the outlook splits sharply by role.

Scorecard rowSales, retail & CPGSource
Task exposureVery high (BLS category) for retail salespersons, services sales reps, wholesale reps and customer service reps; High for cashiers and sales managers. Services sales reps rank 4th of 785 occupations in Microsoft's AI applicability score; customer service reps score 0.70 in Anthropic's observed exposure.BLS AI exposure categories (Aug 2026); Microsoft Research; Anthropic (Mar 2026)
Job outlookSales and related occupations -1.4% overall. Services sales reps +2.7%, buyers +6.0%; cashiers -6.5%, customer service reps -5.3%BLS, 2025-35 projections
Entry-level hiring signalShrinking in support and front-of-store roles, mixed in B2B. Young workers in the most AI-exposed jobs (customer service reps among them) are about 19% below trend. Sales internships are still plentiful: 1,179 listings from 305 employers in Extern's tracker (Aug to Nov 2026).Stanford Digital Economy Lab (Aug 2026, not causal); Extern posting tracker

A quick warning about those exposure scores. Microsoft's researchers point out that sales scores high partly because shoppers now ask AI for product information themselves. That's AI doing some of the customer's homework, not the salesperson's whole job. BLS says the same about its categories: exposure doesn't mean job loss.

What Parts of Sales Is AI Already Doing?

AI already does prospect research, first-draft outreach, CRM data entry, routine support chats, store task planning and a lot of consumer-goods ad content. People still pick the accounts, run the conversation, negotiate and handle anything complicated or emotional.

Task by Task

Here's how the work splits in late 2026, pulled from company announcements and the biggest sales surveys.

Sales taskWhat AI does todayWhat still needs a personSource
Prospect research and first emailsSellers expect AI agents to cut prospect research time 34% and email drafting time 36%Choosing accounts, discovery calls, negotiationSalesforce State of Sales (Feb 2026)

CPG product imageryUnilever's product digital twins make imagery twice as fast and 50% cheaper (company claim)Creative direction and brand decisionsUnilever (Mar 2025)

Look at the right-hand column. Almost every line is about trust, judgment or physical presence.

But we should qualify that. "Doesn't touch yet" is doing a lot of work in a field where tools change every quarter. For now, it's the part of selling AI leaves to people, and it's the part you want your first role to build.

What Big Employers Are Saying

The largest retail employer in the US says AI will change every job but not shrink its headcount, at least for now. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told the Wall Street Journal in September 2025 that AI is "going to change literally every job," and a Walmart spokesperson said headcount is expected to stay flat over the next three years as roles evolve (Fortune, quoting the WSJ). In its October 2025 OpenAI announcement, Walmart also said it's rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI certifications to promote AI literacy across its workforce. Our Walmart internship guide covers its early-career programs.

Customer support is where cuts are clearest. Salesforce cut its own support staff from about 9,000 to about 5,000 as its Agentforce bots took over cases, with CEO Marc Benioff saying "I need less heads" (CNBC, September 2025). Note that those were support roles, not salespeople.

And then there's Klarna, the cautionary tale. After its 2024 announcement, Klarna's CEO told Bloomberg in May 2025 that focusing so heavily on cost had produced "lower quality," and the company started hiring human agents again so customers can always reach a person (The Independent via AOL, citing Bloomberg). Klarna still runs the AI assistant. It just learned it can't run on AI alone.

What Does the Sales Job Data Actually Say?

The data splits cleanly. Retail checkout and customer service are projected to shrink, while B2B sales, buying and sales management grow. Young workers in the most exposed jobs are seeing slower hiring, but there's no sign of a broad sales collapse.

The BLS Outlook Through 2035

BLS projects the whole sales and related occupational group to shrink 1.4% from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% growth for all jobs, and partly credits e-commerce and AI tools in the sales process (BLS Employment Projections, August 2026). Inside that group, the roles move in opposite directions.

Cashiers are projected to fall 6.5% (about 200,600 fewer jobs) as self-checkout and online shopping spread. Customer service representatives are projected to fall 5.3%, and BLS points to automation and self-service. Retail salespersons are basically flat at -0.3%, yet they still have about 520,600 openings a year, almost all from turnover rather than growth.

Now the other side. Sales representatives of services, the closest BLS code for SaaS and B2B roles like SDRs and account executives, are projected to grow 2.7% with a median pay of $69,990. Technical wholesale and manufacturing sales reps grow 1.2% at a median of $104,920. Buyers and purchasing agents grow 6.0%, sales managers 4.5%, and marketing managers (the closest code for CPG brand managers) 6.9%.

So if you're choosing a direction inside sales, the BLS data points one way: toward selling that needs expertise, and away from transactions.

From Extern's Data

Our posting tracker shows sales internships are far from dead:

• In Extern's internship posting tracker (August to November 2026), we found 1,179 sales internship listings from 305 employers.

• The employers posting the most sales internships were Trane Technologies, Sherwin-Williams, CVS Health, Stryker and FedEx. These aren't Extern partners, just the biggest posters. Notice how many are industrial and healthcare companies selling complex products. Our Trane Technologies internship guide covers the top one.

• Among listings that published pay (23 of them), the median employer-published rate was $21 an hour, with the middle half between about $18.80 and $27.

One honest gap: our daily Adzuna tracker doesn't follow a professional sales title yet, only "sales intern," and intern counts swing with the recruiting season. So we can't give you a clean trend line for full-time sales postings, and we won't pretend to.

The Early-Career Signal

Stanford's Digital Economy Lab found, in its August 2026 update, that employment of 22- to 25-year-olds in the most AI-exposed occupations is about 19% below where it would have been had it kept pace with less-exposed jobs (ADP payroll data through June 2026). Customer service is one of the paper's case studies, and wholesale sales reps sit in the highest-exposure group. The authors stress the findings are descriptive, not causal.

Anthropic's March 2026 labor market study points the same way, more mildly: the rate at which 22- to 25-year-olds find jobs in the most exposed occupations is down about 14% from 2022, a result the authors call barely statistically significant, with no systematic rise in unemployment.

Here's the twist most articles miss. In a large study of 5,179 customer support agents, AI raised issues resolved per hour by 14% on average and by 34% for novice agents (Brynjolfsson, Li and Raymond, NBER / QJE 2025). AI helps beginners most. Good news for you once you're hired. Possibly bad news for how many beginners a company thinks it needs.

Yet nobody knows which effect wins. We'd love to give you a clean answer here, and we can't.

Which Sales Jobs Are Safest, and Which Are Most at Risk?

The most exposed sales jobs are scripted and transactional: support chats, checkout and template outreach. The safest rely on expertise, negotiation and trust: technical sales, buying and brand management. Seven roles show the range.

One thing jumps out: nearly every row says "Very high" exposure, yet the outlook runs from -6.5% to +6.9%. Exposure tells you AI can touch the work. It doesn't tell you whether the job survives. Brand and category management overlaps heavily with marketing, and our sibling guide on whether marketing will be replaced by AI covers that side in depth.

The Pattern

An AI-resistant sales role is one where the buyer needs a person to understand a problem, weigh options and stand behind a recommendation. Transactions get automated. Relationships, negotiation and complex solutions don't, at least not yet. The same logic runs through our list of the best-paying AI-proof majors, where judgment-heavy fields hold up best.

How Is AI Changing Entry-Level Sales Work?

The classic first sales job, the SDR or BDR seat, is the most automated part of the sales funnel. Research, list building and first emails are shifting to AI, so new reps are expected to use those tools well and spend their time on live conversations instead.

The SDR Seat Is Being Rebuilt

For years, the standard entry door into tech and B2B sales was the sales development rep: research accounts, build lists, send cold emails, book meetings. That's exactly the work AI handles best now.

Salesforce's 2026 State of Sales report (4,050 sales professionals surveyed in 2025) found 54% of sellers have already used AI agents, and sellers spend only about 40% of their time actually selling. Top performers were 1.7 times more likely to use prospecting agents. One disclosure: Salesforce sells AI sales agents, so read its surveys with that in mind.

Does that mean fully automated "AI SDRs" are replacing people? Not cleanly. In March 2025, TechCrunch reported that former employees of 11x, one of the best-known AI SDR startups, alleged high customer churn and claimed it listed customers it didn't have, which the company disputed (TechCrunch).

So the SDR seat isn't gone. It's being rebuilt around fewer, more skilled conversations.

Buyers Want Fewer Reps, and Reps Waste the Time AI Saves

Here's the uncomfortable part. In a Gartner survey of 646 B2B buyers, 67% said they prefer a rep-free buying experience (Gartner, March 2026). Buyers increasingly research on their own, often with AI.

And when AI does free up a rep's time, most teams waste it. Gartner found AI saves sellers about 4.8 hours a week, yet 72% of sales organizations report low reinvestment of that time into high-value selling (Gartner, May 2026).

That's your opening. A junior rep who uses the saved hours for better discovery calls is rare, and rare is valuable.

From the recruiting side, here's what a sales screener checks on a student resume now. "Familiar with AI tools" earns nothing. "Built a 50-account target list with AI research, wrote personalized outreach and booked 6 meetings" earns a phone screen, because it shows the exact workflow the team runs. Numbers beat adjectives, every time.

What Skills Make a Salesperson Hard to Replace?

The salespeople hardest to replace pair human skills with AI fluency: they run a real discovery conversation, negotiate, keep clean data, and use AI to prepare faster than everyone else. Here are six skills, each with a way to prove it before you graduate.

Six Skills and How to Prove Each

1. Discovery conversations. Record a mock discovery call, or point to a customer-facing role where you can show results, like conversion or upsell numbers.

2. AI-assisted prospecting. Build a 50-account target list and personalized sequence with an AI tool, then track your reply rate. HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales course and Salesforce Trailhead badges are free.

3. CRM fluency and clean data. Earn the Salesforce Certified Associate credential or HubSpot's CRM certificate, then keep a real pipeline tidy for a club or side project.

4. Negotiation and objection handling. Join a university sales competition or case competition, or keep a log of sponsorships you closed for a student organization.

5. Retail and category analytics. Do an Excel or SQL project on sales data: promo lift, sell-through, assortment. This is the skill CPG buyers and brand teams hire for.

6. AI literacy with judgment. Show where AI helped you and where you overrode it. Walmart's adoption of OpenAI certifications for its workforce is a hint of where retail employers are heading.

Notice which skill isn't on the list: memorizing a script. That's the part AI already does well.

A college student sits alone in a small glass-walled campus study room in the evening, wearing a lightweight headset

How Can You Get AI-Ready Sales Experience as a Student?

Get experience that shows you can understand customers and move a number: a sales internship, a customer-facing role with measured results, or a project for a real company. Then make your AI tool use visible on your resume.

Internship Programs to Target

Our retail and CPG internships summer 2027 guide lists the consumer goods and retail companies hiring, with timelines. Big CPG programs tend to open in late summer and early fall, so by November some are closing, but industrial and healthcare companies (the top posters in our tracker) keep hiring sales interns well into the school year. Many employers now treat AI as part of the internship itself: NACE's spring 2026 survey found nearly 60% of employers assign interns projects that use AI tools (NACE, April 2026).

Externships in Sales, Retail and CPG

An Externship is a short, remote professional experience program with a real company, usually 4 to 11 weeks (most commonly 8) at about 5 to 10 hours a week, with an extern manager guiding you. In Extern's product survey of students who finished a first project (October 2025, n=273), real-world experience was the top reason they valued the program, at 31%.

At Extern, we've seen that students who've worked on a real company's customer or growth question walk into sales interviews with a story instead of a script. Three current programs fit:

• The Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights Externship, for consumer goods and understanding why shoppers buy.

• The Khan Academy Strategic Partnerships & Growth Externship, for partnership and revenue thinking close to B2B sales.

• The Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship, if retail operations interest you. Our guide on whether AI will replace supply chain jobs covers that side.

When you're ready, you can browse current Externships across other fields too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AI replace customer service representatives?

It's cutting into the role faster than most sales jobs. BLS projects customer service reps to shrink through 2035, and some companies have stopped backfilling support roles as AI agents take routine cases. Complex, emotional or escalated problems still go to people, and that's where the remaining jobs concentrate.

Will AI replace cashiers and retail workers?

Cashiers are shrinking, mostly because of self-checkout and online shopping, not chatbots. Retail floor jobs are holding roughly flat because the work is physical and in person. What's changing is the toolkit: store associates at big chains now use AI for task lists, translation and quick answers about store processes.

Will AI replace SDRs and BDRs?

Not fully, but it's taking over the research and first-touch email that used to fill an SDR's day. Fully automated AI SDR products exist, yet their results have been mixed and disputed. The SDRs who last spend more time on live conversations, qualification and discovery, using AI to prepare.

Is sales a good career for new grads in 2026?

Yes, if you aim at consultative or B2B sales rather than scripted roles. BLS projects growth for services sales reps, technical sales reps and sales managers, and sales managers earned a median $148,270 in May 2025. Entry roles now expect AI and CRM comfort, so show that early.

What sales jobs are safe from AI?

No sales job is untouched, but the safest rely on trust, negotiation and complex products: technical and B2B sales, sales engineering, retail and wholesale buying, and sales management. The least safe are scripted and transactional, like routine support chats, checkout lanes and cold outreach that follows a template word for word.

Do I need AI skills to get an entry-level sales job?

Increasingly, yes. NACE found more than a third of entry-level jobs across fields require AI skills as of spring 2026. You don't need to code. You need to show you can research accounts, draft outreach and keep CRM data clean with AI's help, then still run the call yourself.

Will AI replace salespeople completely?

Very unlikely. Gartner predicts AI agents will outnumber sellers 10 to 1 by 2028, but it also expects fewer than 40% of sellers to say those agents made them more productive. Buyers still want a person for big, risky or complicated purchases, and somebody has to own the relationship.
