TL;DR

• Will business analysts be replaced by AI? No. BLS has no business analyst code, but its three closest occupations all sit in the top AI exposure tier and still project 7.9% to 11.9% growth from 2025 to 2035.

• AI features in Jira, Confluence, Power BI, Tableau and SAP Signavio now draft user stories, meeting notes, process diagrams and standard reports.

• Systems, process and quantitative BA roles are growing. Junior documentation and routine reporting work is shrinking.

• Your move: prove you can run a stakeholder interview and fix an AI draft, not just produce one.

Externships are short, remote professional experience programs where you work on real projects for real companies, with guidance from people in the field. For business analysis skills, try the SQL & Database Architecture Externship with Breaking Games, the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship or the Lean Startup Co. Corporate Strategy Externship. Explore all Externships.

Will Business Analysts Be Replaced by AI?

No. AI is taking over a lot of the writing a business analyst does, but not the job of figuring out what a business actually needs. The three government occupations closest to "business analyst" are all rated Very high for AI exposure by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and all three are still projected to grow roughly 2.3 to 3.4 times faster than the 3.5% average for all jobs.

So the role survives. The entry-level version of it looks different, and that's what this guide is about.

Business analysis sits right between two fields our students keep asking about. Data analytics (21.1%) and consulting (13.5%) were among the top four fields students said they wanted to explore next in Extern's June 2026 post-program survey, and the BA title shows up in both, plus at banks, tech companies and manufacturers.

Why There's No Single "Business Analyst" Number

Here's a wrinkle most articles skip. BLS doesn't track business analysts as an occupation. The title is spread across three official categories, so we use them as proxies:

• Management analysts (13-1111): O*NET lists "Business Analyst" as a sample title. This covers consulting, strategy and in-house operations BAs.

• Computer systems analysts (15-1211): sample titles include "Business Systems Analyst" and "IT Analyst." This covers BAs who sit between business teams and software.

• Operations research analysts (15-2031): the closest fit for quantitative, process and optimization analysts.

None of them is exactly "the BA job." Together they're the best official picture we have.

The AI Exposure Scorecard for Business Analysts

Scorecard rowBusiness analysts (via three BLS proxies)
Task exposureBLS AI exposure: Very high for all three proxies (Aug 2026). Microsoft AI applicability: management analysts 97th percentile, computer systems analysts 90th, operations research analysts 89th (2024 Copilot data). Anthropic observed exposure ranks: 94th, 79th and 29th of 756 (Mar 2026).
Job outlook2025 to 2035: management analysts +10.1% ($101,860 median), computer systems analysts +7.9% ($105,850), operations research analysts +11.9% ($88,940). All jobs: +3.5%. Pay is May 2025. Source: BLS.
Entry-level hiring signalLive "business analyst" postings rose from about 24,500 to about 28,600 (Adzuna, July to October 2026, Extern tracking). But in the most AI-exposed occupations, the entry-level share of postings fell from 29% to 10% between 2021 and 2026 (Indeed Hiring Lab). No BA-specific junior hiring data exists.
Most exposed roleJunior documentation and requirements-writing BA; routine reporting BA
Least exposed roleIT and business systems analyst; stakeholder-facing generalist BA
VerdictTransforming. Routine drafting and reporting move to AI; the first BA job starts at checking and owning that work.

One honest caveat about that first row. BLS says plainly that its exposure tiers aren't job-loss forecasts, and nearly every desk occupation lands in the top tier. The more useful contrast is the second row: top-tier exposure, above-average growth. Both are true at once.

What Parts of Business Analysis Is AI Already Doing?

AI now produces many of the first drafts a junior business analyst used to write by hand: user stories, action items from meeting notes, process diagrams from written descriptions, and standard reports. What it can't do is decide which requirement is real, settle a disagreement between two stakeholders, or confirm that a diagram matches how work actually happens.

The Tools Already Doing BA Tasks

These features ship inside software most BAs already use. We're describing what each does, not endorsing any of them.

BA taskWhat AI does todayWhat still needs a person
Requirements to backlogAtlassian Rovo in Jira suggests backlog items from Confluence or Loom content (beta) and writes structured work item descriptionsDeciding what the requirement actually is and checking the suggested items match it
Meeting notes to tasksConfluence AI turns page text into Jira tasks and writes summaries or action itemsRunning the workshop, resolving conflicts, confirming who owns what
Process modelingSAP Signavio "Text to Process" turns a written description into a BPMN diagram (released March 2025)Validating the model against how people really do the work
Process mining questionsCopilot in Power Automate Process Mining surfaces top insights and answers questions about process dataThe long tail: Copilot only sees the most frequent activities and variants
Standard reportingPower BI Copilot summarizes reports, builds report pages and writes DAXPreparing the data model, without which Copilot can return generic or inaccurate results
Quick visual analysisTableau Agent builds charts from plain-language requests and explains calculated fieldsDashboards, data modeling, filters and actions, which it can't build

Microsoft's own Power BI Copilot documentation describes these as tasks "similar to what you might ask your analyst to do." That's about as direct as a vendor gets. Read the limits column, though. Tableau's help page warns its agent "might not always get it right," and Microsoft's process mining page says Copilot can't see custom attributes such as financial or vendor fields.

What Business Analysts Say About Their Own AI Use

The IIBA, the main professional body for business analysts, surveyed 2,120 practitioners in 122 countries for its 2026 Global State of Business Analysis report. Their top AI uses were drafting and formatting (28%), communication and documentation (25%), and idea generation or problem solving (22%).

Notice the overlap with the table above.

So the work BAs hand to AI is the same work the tools target.

And yet communication ranked as the number one BA skill for the third year running, with critical thinking climbing to second. Megan Slabinski of Robert Half put the shift plainly in a CIO interview from August 2026: AI speeds up requirements documents, meeting summaries and first-draft user stories, while BAs check data accuracy and raise business risks early. She also called AI literacy "a baseline expectation."

What Does the Job Data Actually Say About Business Analysts?

The long-term outlook is above average and the entry-level signals are cautious. All three BLS proxies are projected to add jobs faster than the economy through 2035, about 134,500 openings a year combined. Meanwhile, posting data for AI-exposed occupations shows employers tilting toward experienced hires.

The BLS Proxies, Side by Side (2025-35)

According to the BLS AI exposure and projections data released in August 2026:

• Management analysts: +10.1%, 94,100 openings a year, median pay $101,860

• Computer systems analysts: +7.9%, 32,900 openings a year, median pay $105,850

• Operations research analysts: +11.9%, 7,500 openings a year, median pay $88,940

The surprise is in the computer systems analysts handbook page. BLS expects firms to hire more systems analysts as they expand their IT use, "including artificial intelligence (AI)." It's the only one of the three outlooks that names AI as a reason to hire more people, not fewer.

From Extern's Data: BA Postings and Who's Hiring

In US job-posting counts Extern tracks daily (Adzuna, July to October 2026), live "business analyst" postings went from about 24,500 to about 28,600.

Extern's posting tracker (August to November 2026) logged 79 business analyst listings aimed at students and new grads, from 48 employers. The employers posting the most were Oshkosh (4), followed by Raytheon, Campbell's, McKesson, Fidelity Investments and Accenture with 3 each. That spread tells you something: BA hiring is scattered across manufacturing, healthcare, finance and consulting rather than concentrated in a few famous names. These employers aren't Extern partners. And only four listings published pay, so we won't quote a figure.

What the Junior Hiring Research Shows

There's no study that splits business analyst hiring by seniority. We looked. So here are the closest proxies, labeled as proxies.

• Indeed Hiring Lab (September 2026): in the most AI-exposed occupations, the entry-level share of salaried postings fell from 29% to 10% between 2021 and 2026, while the senior share rose from 22% to 47%.

• Burning Glass Institute (July 2025): in its "No Country for Young Grads" report, junior postings fell relative to senior ones across business occupations as a group. It doesn't name business analysts.

• Dallas Fed (January 2026): workers aged 20 to 24 slipped from 16.4% to 15.5% of employment in the most AI-exposed jobs, mainly because fewer were hired, according to the Dallas Fed analysis.

• Stanford Digital Economy Lab (August 2026): employment of 22- to 25-year-olds in AI-exposed occupations runs about 19% below its expected path. The authors don't claim AI caused the gap.

So put those together and the direction is clear, even if the BA-specific size isn't. The jobs grow; the first rung gets harder to reach.

Which Business Analyst Roles Are Safest, and Which Are Most at Risk?

The safest BA roles involve systems, processes and people: translating between business teams and technology, finding why a process breaks, and getting a change adopted. The most exposed are the roles whose main output is a document or a standard report, because those are exactly what Jira, Power BI and Tableau now draft.

Related roleAI exposureOutlookWhy

So the dividing line isn't "BA versus AI." It's drafting versus deciding.

If the reporting side of the job is what pulls you in, our article on whether AI will replace data analysts goes deeper on dashboards and SQL work. If the stakeholder and strategy side appeals more, read our breakdown of whether consultants will be replaced by AI, since many entry-level BA roles sit inside consulting firms.

How Is AI Changing Entry-Level Business Analyst Work?

A first-year business analyst used to spend much of the week writing: user stories, meeting notes, as-is process maps and standard reports. AI now drafts most of that in minutes. So the junior job starts one step later, at reviewing the draft, catching what's wrong and taking responsibility for the final version.

What Shrinks and What Takes Its Place

The tasks shrinking fastest are the ones in the tools table: first-draft user stories, meeting action items, as-is diagrams drawn from interview notes, and simple dashboards. Those used to be how juniors learned the business.

What replaces them? Mostly checking. Did Rovo's suggested backlog item capture what the stakeholder meant? Does the Signavio diagram match the warehouse floor? Is the Copilot summary using the right data model? Each question needs someone who understands the business, and that's the skill a new BA now has to show early.

What Banks, Big BA Employers, Are Actually Doing

Banks hire a lot of business analysts, and their signals point in different directions.

Goldman Sachs rolled out its AI assistant firmwide in June 2025, and its 2026 intern class was about 2,500, down from about 2,600; its CEO said AI will "probably" shrink starting classes over the next few years, according to Fortune. JPMorgan has given about 250,000 employees access to its internal LLM Suite, with half using it roughly daily, CNBC reported in September 2025.

But Bank of America onboarded 2,000 summer interns and 2,000 full-time recruits in June 2026 while holding headcount flat, per Fortune's report on bank hiring. And Revelio Labs found the junior hiring rate at US banks dipped after ChatGPT's launch, then recovered in 2026, with the decline not concentrated in the most AI-exposed roles.

We expected the bank data to be the clearest proof of AI cutting junior analysts. It isn't, really. It's mixed, and anyone who tells you otherwise is picking one data point.

What Employers Expect on Day One

According to NACE (April 2026), more than one-third of entry-level jobs now require AI skills, and nearly 60% of employers give interns AI projects. For BAs, that means showing up able to prompt, review and correct AI drafts in Jira, Confluence or Power BI.

The practitioner mood has cooled a little, too. In IIBA's surveys, the share of BAs saying AI is good for their careers went from 63% (2024) to 74% (2025), then fell to 69% in 2026, though only 5% call it negative. Canada's Conference Board, through Signal49, found postings requiring BA skills fell faster than postings overall between 2023 and 2025, without blaming AI. Not a disaster. Still worth knowing.

What Skills Make a Business Analyst Hard to Replace?

The BAs who are hardest to replace get the real requirement out of people, model a process accurately, and catch AI mistakes before they reach a decision. Here are six skills that hold up, each with a way to prove it on a resume before you've held the title.

1. Requirements elicitation and stakeholder interviews. The people tasks in the O*NET management analyst profile, interviewing staff and conferring on new systems, are the low-exposure half of the work. Prove it: run three to five stakeholder interviews on a real project and turn them into a requirements doc plus a backlog.

2. Process modeling (BPMN) and improvement. AI can draw the diagram but can't check it against reality. Prove it: an as-is and to-be model of a real process, from a campus club or a part-time job, with one measured improvement.

3. SQL plus Power BI or Tableau. Copilot needs a clean data model and still makes mistakes. Prove it: a published dashboard with notes on where the AI assistant got it wrong.

4. Judging AI output. Prove it: a set of AI-generated user stories next to your edited versions, with the acceptance criteria you added.

5. Working in Jira and Confluence. Story and task generation now lives inside these tools. Prove it: a sample Jira board with epics, stories and acceptance criteria.

6. A foundational certification. IIBA reports certified BAs earn 12% more on average (global, all levels). Its ECBA certification needs no experience and costs $316 through December 31, 2026 (list price $395, or $196 for members). It's optional. Projects matter more.

None of these are exotic. They're the parts of the job that were always about people and judgment, which is why they're the parts AI hasn't absorbed.

How Can You Get AI-Ready Business Analyst Experience as a Student?

Build evidence that you can turn messy conversations into clear requirements, check an AI draft and present a recommendation someone acts on. Then aim at internship programs in the two places BA roles cluster: data and analytics teams, and consulting firms.

Know Where BA Internships Live

BA internships rarely have their own recruiting season, so follow the calendars they ride on. Our data analytics internships guide for summer 2027 notes that most applications for that cycle opened between July and November 2026, with finance data roles first. The consulting internships guide covers the consulting side, where "business analyst" is often the entry title.

Two company guides worth a look: Capital One, which builds much of its business around data and analytics, and Accenture, one of the employers in our tracker posting BA roles this fall.

Get One Real Project Before You Apply

Employers want to see you've done the work for someone real. One pattern we've noticed across thousands of conversations at Extern: students who can describe one stakeholder interview they ran, and what changed because of it, stand out from students listing tools.

An Externship is one way to get that. Most run 8 weeks (some as short as 4 or as long as 11), at 5 to 10 hours a week, with guided support from people in the field. The SQL & Database Architecture Externship with Breaking Games builds the data side, the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship is close to process and operations analysis, and the Lean Startup Co. Corporate Strategy Externship leans toward strategy.

It won't substitute for a BA internship.

But it's proof you can do the work while you apply for one.

Build a Three-Piece BA Portfolio

Keep it small and concrete: one requirements doc showing the AI draft and your corrected version, one as-is and to-be process model, and one dashboard with a short note on what the AI got wrong. Three pieces, each under two pages. Would a hiring manager learn more from that than from a list of tools? Almost certainly.

When you're ready for real project work, browse current Externships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a business analyst a good job in 2026?

Yes. The closest BLS categories pay medians between $88,940 and $105,850 (May 2025) and are projected to grow 7.9% to 11.9% through 2035. The harder part is the first job, because AI handles more routine drafting. Students with real project work and strong stakeholder skills have the clearest path in.

Do business analysts have a future?

Yes, though the job is shifting toward judgment. IIBA's 2026 survey found 69% of business analysts think AI is good for their careers and only 5% think it's harmful. The future BA spends less time writing documents and more time deciding what's true, what matters and what the business should do next.

Is AI going to replace analysts?

Not as a group. AI is replacing analyst tasks, especially first drafts, standard reports and routine queries, faster than it's replacing analyst roles. BLS still projects growth for management, systems and operations research analysts. For the reporting side specifically, our article on whether AI will replace data analysts covers the details.

Is AI related to business analytics?

Yes, closely. Business analytics uses data to answer business questions, and AI tools now speed up parts of that, like writing queries, building charts and summarizing reports. Analysts still choose the question, prepare the data and judge whether an answer makes sense, which is why AI skills now appear in so many entry-level postings.

What is an AI business analyst?

An AI business analyst helps a company decide where AI should be used and checks whether it works. The role combines classic BA skills, like gathering requirements and mapping processes, with defining AI use cases and testing output. It's an emerging title, so expect the responsibilities to vary a lot between employers.

Is the ECBA worth it if AI is changing the job?

It can help, but it won't carry an application alone. IIBA's ECBA needs no prior experience and costs $316 through December 31, 2026. IIBA reports certified BAs earn about 12% more on average. Pair it with a portfolio of real requirements, process and reporting work, because employers hire on proof.

Are banks still hiring junior analysts in 2026?

Yes, though signals are mixed. Bank of America brought in 2,000 interns and 2,000 full-time recruits in June 2026, and Revelio Labs found junior hiring at US banks recovered this year. Goldman Sachs, meanwhile, says AI will probably shrink starting classes. Apply broadly and show you can work alongside AI tools.
