The U.S. Navy's biggest student internships are civilian research programs, and the summer 2027 window is open now with a hard deadline. The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) offers more than 800 placements in 62 Naval laboratories for college and graduate students, and its high-school counterpart SEAP has about 300 placements across 38 labs. Both opened on 15 Sep 2026 and close on 30 Nov 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

None of this involves enlisting. NREIP and SEAP interns are paid "guest researchers", and students hired through Navy Pathways or STEM student programs are federal civilian employees. One track is already shut for this cycle: the Office of Naval Intelligence's summer 2027 internship closed in May 2026.

The 30 November date is the only fixed deadline a college student faces this fall. Some older school and command pages still say 1 November, last cycle's date; the program site says 30 November.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real organization, most often over 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week. They run alongside a Navy application, not instead of it: the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship builds network-defense basics for the cyber labs, and the Pfizer AI-Powered Document Insights Externship gives you an applied machine-learning project to describe.

What Is a U.S. Navy Internship?

A U.S. Navy internship, for most students, is a paid summer research placement at a Navy laboratory through NREIP (college and graduate) or SEAP (high school), sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. You pick up to three labs, your application is shared with all participating labs, and you spend the summer on research under a lab mentor, ending with a quad-chart presentation. Interns are guest researchers, not federal employees, and stipends are reported on a 1099-NEC.

The Navy also hires students as paid civilian employees, through DON Pathways announcements on USAJOBS and through STEM direct-hire programs at commands such as NAVSEA's warfare centers and NAVAIR. Those routes come with federal pay grades and a path to conversion.

When Do U.S. Navy Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

NREIP and SEAP applications for summer 2027 opened on 15 Sep 2026 and close on 30 Nov 2026, roughly 8 to 9 months before a late-May or June start. The calendar moved a lot in one year: the summer 2026 cycle ran 1 Aug to 1 Nov 2025, so this year's window opened 45 days later and closes 29 days later, with the cutoff switched from Eastern to Central time.

The federal-employee routes run on shorter, less predictable clocks. Navy Pathways student announcements on USAJOBS have opened for as little as two to seven days, and none was live on 3 Oct 2026. In 2026 they appeared between March and July, after a long gap during the 2025 federal hiring freeze, so the January to May 2027 estimate is low confidence.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

NREIP and SEAP applications for summer 2027 are open right now. Navy Pathways has no student announcements on USAJOBS, the ONI summer 2027 class is closed, and the NSWC Dahlgren, NUWC Newport and NAVAIR student talent pools are taking resumes.

Apply first, then build proof alongside it: the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship or the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship gives you a finished technical project to mention to a lab mentor.

January – March 2027EXPECTED

NREIP and SEAP award letters are typically sent in this window. In the 2026 cycle they slipped badly, with offers from late April and some decisions only in June, so keep a backup summer plan.

January – May 2027EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

Navy Pathways student-trainee announcements expected on USAJOBS, each open for days. The Office of Naval Intelligence expects to post its summer 2028 internship in spring 2027. Low confidence: Pathways posting has been irregular since 2025.

Summer 2027

NREIP runs 10 weeks and SEAP 8 weeks, full time at your lab, with stipends paid from May through August. Interns arrange their own housing and, at many labs, their own transportation.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

NREIP and SEAP run on a hard deadline: 30 Nov 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central, with no late entry described on the program site. Applying early still helps, because your references only get their request once you submit, and their forms are due within 14 days after the close. The FAQ also warns that reference emails can land in spam.

Pathways is the opposite shape. Announcements open without notice and have closed within two to seven days, so the only workable strategy is a USAJOBS saved search for the Department of the Navy with the Students hiring path, and a two-page federal resume ready before it fires.

Which U.S. Navy Internship Programs Should You Target?

Start with NREIP or SEAP if you want research this summer. Add the direct-hire pools and a USAJOBS alert if you want a federal job track that can convert after graduation.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility is set lab by lab, so read each lab card before you pick your three:

• Citizenship: the programs require US citizenship, with exceptions at some labs. On the 70 NREIP lab-site cards, 35 require sole US citizenship and 9 accept permanent residents.

• Security clearance: 19 of the 70 NREIP lab cards mention a security clearance, usually the ability to obtain one.

• Age: 24 of 70 NREIP lab cards require you to be 18 by the start date; SEAP requires at least 16.

• Academic level: NREIP accepts students on track to finish freshman year through graduate students; spring graduates are eligible, winter graduates aren't. A transcript is required.

• Getting there: 33 of 70 NREIP lab cards require your own transportation or a driver's license, and there's no housing allowance.

Is US Citizenship a Hard Cutoff?

At most labs, yes, and many require sole citizenship, which rules out dual citizens. The rule isn't universal, though: 9 of the 70 NREIP lab sites accept permanent residents, and some cards allow dual citizens.

Federal Pathways and ONI jobs are stricter. Their announcements require US citizenship, and ONI states that clearances can't be granted to foreign nationals or dual citizens.

What Skills Does the U.S. Navy Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The Navy doesn't publish skill lists the way a company job posting does. Each NREIP lab card instead names the majors that fit its research, which is a better guide to where you'd be placed. Electrical engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering lead, each named by more than 40 of 70 lab sites. Physics, applied mathematics, robotics, systems engineering and statistics follow, and cybersecurity appears on 25.

Pathways engineering announcements add a formal test: an ABET-accredited engineering curriculum, or the equivalent calculus and physics coursework.

None of these is a Navy program or affects Navy selection. They're a way to have a finished project to talk about if a lab researcher interviews you, which some do.

What Is the U.S. Navy Application and Interview Process Like?

For NREIP and SEAP, the process runs through one portal:

1. Create an account in the Naval STEM Interns portal and choose "NREIP (Undergrad/Grad) - Summer 2027" or "SEAP (High School) - Summer 2027".

2. Pick up to three labs. Read each lab card's citizenship, clearance, age and transportation rules first; your application is shared with all participating labs.

3. Upload your transcript and personal statements. A transcript is required to submit.

4. Add references. They receive an email with a form, due within 14 days after the 30 Nov close.

5. Lab review and possible interview. Some lab researchers interview applicants; others don't, according to past interns on Reddit.

6. Award letters. Typically January to March; in the 2026 cycle, late April to June. You accept in the portal.

For Pathways, the process is a standard USAJOBS application with a two-page resume, which NAVAIR's job board notes has been the federal limit since September 2025.

What Students on Reddit Say

Past NREIP applicants on r/EngineeringStudents are candid about timing and lab quality.

Summer 2026 applicants heard nothing for months. A late-March email said selection would begin in a few weeks, offers started arriving in late April, and some rejections only came in late June. One applicant said their preferred lab set up its own condensed internship through a subcontractor instead.

r/EngineeringStudents consensus (2026), paraphrased · read the thread

A two-time NREIP intern said offers normally come in January or February, with an email telling you to check the portal, and others in the thread reported offers from mid-January. Some said they were accepted without an interview; others interviewed with a lab researcher first.

r/EngineeringStudents past interns and applicants (2024–2025), paraphrased · read the thread

Experiences depend heavily on the lab. One intern at a small site said their project stalled waiting on authorization and there wasn't much to do, while another at a training-systems lab described a busy first week of real research, and a Naval Research Laboratory intern said start dates were flexible.

How Do You Stand Out for a Navy Internship?

Three moves before 30 November. First, choose labs, not just a program. With 62 labs and very different research, a personal statement that names a lab's actual work, such as undersea vehicles, radar or naval medicine, reads very differently from a generic one.

Second, clear the eligibility filters on purpose. Pick labs whose citizenship, clearance, age and transportation rules you meet; a strong application to a lab you can't join is wasted.

Third, line up your references now. They only get their forms after you submit, they have 14 days after the close, and the FAQ warns the emails can land in spam. The Navy doesn't publish an acceptance rate or an applicant count, so there's no benchmark to aim at, just a complete, well-targeted application.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 U.S. Navy internship?

No. Summer 2026 NREIP and SEAP applications closed on 1 November 2025. For summer 2027, NREIP and SEAP are open until 30 November 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central, but the Office of Naval Intelligence's summer 2027 internship already closed in May 2026. These are civilian programs, not enlistment.

When is the NREIP deadline for summer 2027?

30 November 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central time, for both NREIP and SEAP. Applications opened on 15 September 2026. Your references must complete their forms within 14 days after the close, so send their details early. Some older pages still show last year's 1 November date.

How much does a Navy internship pay?

NREIP pays a stipend of $7,500 for new undergraduates, $9,000 for returning undergraduates and $11,500 for graduate students over 10 weeks. SEAP pays $4,000 for new and $4,500 for returning high school interns over 8 weeks. Stipends go on a 1099-NEC, with no housing allowance.

Is a Navy internship the same as joining the Navy?

No. NREIP and SEAP interns are guest researchers paid a stipend, and Pathways and STEM direct-hire interns are federal civilian employees. None of these programs involves enlistment, ROTC or the Naval Academy, and none carries a military service obligation. The SMART scholarship is the exception, with a civilian service commitment.

Do I need to be a US citizen for a Navy internship?

At most labs, yes. Of the 70 NREIP lab sites, 35 require sole US citizenship and 9 accept permanent residents, so check each lab card before choosing. Federal Pathways announcements and ONI internships require US citizenship, and ONI can't clear dual citizens.

Do Navy internships require a security clearance?

Some do. 19 of the 70 NREIP lab cards mention a security clearance, usually the ability to obtain one, and some labs require interns to be 18 for that reason. Pathways announcements have listed Secret clearances, and the ONI internship requires TS/SCI eligibility.

When will I hear back from NREIP?

Award and non-award letters are normally sent between January and March. In the 2026 cycle they ran much later: offers arrived from late April and some applicants heard only in late June. Keep other summer options open until you have a letter in hand.

How do Navy Pathways internships work?

They're federal civilian student jobs posted on USAJOBS under the Department of the Navy with the Students hiring path. Announcements have stayed open only two to seven days, none was live on 3 October 2026, and students can convert to permanent jobs after 640 hours and graduation.

Put 30 November on your calendar and choose your three labs this month. While you wait for a letter, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to bring to a lab interview.
