Last updated: October 2026
Thomson Reuters has no branded US summer internship class, and its US supply is thin: as of October 25, 2026, its job board lists two US internship-type roles, an Applied Scientist Intern in San Francisco and a Software Engineer Co-Op in Rochester, New York. Both are technical, and both have strict requirements (a PhD or research master's for one, US citizenship and a security clearance for the other). The one fixed calendar belongs to the Reuters News Internship, which opens applications every November for a 12-week paid program from June.
Other roles post by semester, with starts in January, May and September. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in 2027, and which month depends on the role.
What Is a Thomson Reuters Internship?
A Thomson Reuters internship is a short, paid role at the information and technology company behind Reuters News, Westlaw and Practical Law. The company's postings describe it as having "26,000 employees across more than 70 countries." Its campus careers page lists internship families in sales, technology, marketing, journalism, legal, finance, operations, consulting, product strategy, editorial and manufacturing, but the US board showed only two open roles on October 25, 2026. Intern events, networking, hackathons and mentoring are part of what the company says interns get. This page covers US internships only. The same board lists applied science, research and support internships in Zug, London, Toronto and Mexico City, and Reuters News hires interns worldwide, which this guide leaves out.

When Do Thomson Reuters Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Thomson Reuters runs on two calendars. Most roles post by semester: the campus page says its recruitment cycle has start dates at the beginning of January, May and September, and tells students to "check out our new jobs at the beginning of each semester." The Applied Scientist Intern was posted on September 3, 2026 for a January 11 start, a lead time of about four months. The Reuters News Internship is separate: its page shows applications opening in November, closing in December, and internships running June to September, a lead time of about seven months. No 2027 dates are published for either, and we have no dated prior-cycle postings for the May and September starts, so those windows are expected with low confidence.
Two US roles are open: the Applied Scientist Intern in San Francisco, with a posting end date of November 27, and the Software Engineer Co-Op in Rochester, with an end date of January 25, 2027. A Student Brand Ambassador role for law students shows an end date of October 31.
Reuters News Internship applications are expected to open. The program page says "applications open every November," and Thomson Reuters hasn't published a 2027 date.
Reuters News applications are expected to close, about a month after opening, according to the program's recruitment timeline.
The Applied Scientist internship starts January 11 for the person hired. New postings for May-start roles are expected around the beginning of the spring semester.
Reuters News interns work for 12 weeks between June and September. Other campus roles start in May or September, with postings expected at the start of each semester.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The two open roles carry hard posting end dates. The Applied Scientist Intern posting ends on November 27, 2026, as listed in Thomson Reuters' job system, and the Co-Op posting ends on January 25, 2027, so don't wait on either. Reuters News is a one-month window. The program page shows applications open in November and close in December, so have your clips, resume and cover letter ready before it opens. For the other campus roles, Thomson Reuters says to look at the start of each semester, so check the board in early January and again in late summer.
Which Thomson Reuters Internship Programs Should You Target?
Thomson Reuters has no single US internship program. These are the routes with a US posting or a fixed calendar.
| Route | Focus | Location and published pay | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applied Scientist Intern (Thomson Reuters Labs) | Applied machine learning and natural language processing for legal, tax and news products; Jan 11 to Jul 12, 2027 | San Francisco, hybrid; pay not published | Python, PyTorch, NLP, LLM evaluation, AWS |
| Software Engineer Co-Op (Thomson Reuters Special Services) | Full-stack software for the TRSS solutions suite | Rochester, NY, hybrid; pay not published | Java or Python, computer science fundamentals, React or SQL preferred |
| Reuters News Internship | Reporting, writing, photography, video, data reporting and producing; 12 weeks, paid | Global; 2026 class included New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles; amount not published | Journalism skills, a portfolio of clips or reels |
| Student Brand Ambassador | Promotes Westlaw, Practical Law and CoCounsel to law students; part time, remote. Not a classic internship | Remote; the posting's range is $10 to $25 an hour | Social media, Microsoft Office, legal research familiarity |
| Other campus internship families | Sales, marketing, finance, operations, consulting, product strategy and others on the campus page | No US posting on the board on Oct 25 | Varies |
The campus page lists the internship families but doesn't say which are open or where, so check the Workday board at the start of each semester.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The open roles and the Reuters program set these rules:
• Applied Scientist Intern: currently enrolled in a PhD program in a relevant discipline, or a master's program with research experience, plus experience with NLP or machine learning, including large language models.
• Software Engineer Co-Op: an understanding of computer science principles and algorithms, experience coding in Java or Python, and the ability to obtain and maintain a US national security clearance. The posting says US citizenship is essential.
• Reuters News Internship: no degree, class year or GPA requirement appears on the program page.
• GPA and work authorization: no GPA is stated on either open posting. The Applied Scientist posting states no work authorization rule.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff at Thomson Reuters?
Neither open posting states a GPA, so it isn't a stated cutoff. The real gates are the degree level and the citizenship rule. The Applied Scientist role is written for PhD students and research-focused master's students, and the Co-Op requires US citizenship and a clearance, which no GPA can offset. For other campus roles, read the qualifications line on the posting when it appears.

Could You Get In at Thomson Reuters? Compare Your Profile
Based on 403 software engineering interns who started their first software internship between 2024 and 2026 (public LinkedIn profiles, aggregated). Six questions, under a minute.
Which summer are you applying for?
Recruiting timelines differ by class year, so we compare you with the right group.
Which group is your school closest to?
Firms recruit on campus in tiers. We match you against admits from schools like yours.
Is your major computer science, software engineering, data science or electrical engineering?
Almost every software intern in our data studied one of these. Other majors get in, but the coursework has to show elsewhere.
How many internships, externships or research positions have you held so far?
Count anything with a real employer, mentor or principal investigator attached. Retail and food service do not count.
Has any of that experience been tech-related?
Software, data, IT, engineering or a research lab. Any size of company counts.
Do you have at least one project on your resume or LinkedIn?
Personal, class, hackathon or open-source projects all count.
Aggregated from public LinkedIn profiles of people who held the internship. No individual profile is shown. Read the cross-industry study of 2,500+ intern profiles.
What Skills Does Thomson Reuters Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Only two US technical postings were open, so we can't give a skill frequency. The Applied Scientist posting lists Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, spaCy, LangChain, HuggingFace and AWS, plus experience fine-tuning and evaluating large language models. The Co-Op posting asks for Java or Python and computer science fundamentals, and prefers React, JavaScript or TypeScript, and SQL. Thomson Reuters' campus page adds that some sales and technology roles use Pymetrics and HackerRank assessments.
Note: Only two US technical internship postings were open on October 25, 2026, so we did not count skills across job descriptions. The skills above come from those two postings, read in full on Thomson Reuters' job system.
How Is Demand for Software Engineer Interns Moving Right Now?
Software engineer intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 790 in August
For Thomson Reuters applicants: Thomson Reuters' job board listed 485 postings on October 25, 2026, and only two US internship-type roles: an Applied Scientist Intern ending November 27 and a Software Engineer Co-Op ending January 25. Apply now rather than waiting for a summer wave.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each Thomson Reuters skill maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to discuss in interviews.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| SQL and databases | Co-Op: preferred experience with "React, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, SQL" | SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games |
| Finance analysis | Campus page, finance internship: "construct and analyze full P&L views for specific products" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Product strategy | Campus page, product strategy internship: "conduct customer feedback market research" | BeReal Product Management |
| Customer and market analytics | Campus page, marketing internship: "using data and analytics to deliver an exceptional customer experience" | Health-Ade (Generous Brands) Consumer Behavior & Insights |
There is no open Extern externship in machine learning or natural language processing right now, so for the Applied Scientist role your research and coursework carry that part.
What Is the Thomson Reuters Application and Interview Process Like?
Thomson Reuters describes a four-step process on its campus careers page:
1. Apply online. Use the Workday board; the same account shows your application status.
2. Assessments. "Some of our positions for sales and technology may require assessment(s) through Pymetrics and Hacker Rank." Any extra assessment is named in an email from the campus team.
3. Interview. It starts with HireVue, a video interview you can do at home on a mobile device, followed by an interview with someone from the hiring team.
4. Offer. If you get an internship, the campus team emails you the next steps.
Practice the video format with our behavioral interview guide, since the first round is a recorded interview.
What Students on Reddit Say
The Reddit threads we found about Thomson Reuters internships are from 2019 and 2022, so treat them as background and rely on the company's pages for current details.
A candidate asked what a 30-minute phone screen for the software engineering internship would be like. Two commenters said it was behavioral only and non-technical.
An applicant who had applied two months earlier wrote that an email arrived asking for an online test to be finished that same day, and asked whether it was worth doing with another interview pending.
How Do You Stand Out for a Thomson Reuters Internship?
Three moves. First, apply to the role that fits your level. The Applied Scientist role is written for PhD and research master's students, so lead with papers, models and evaluation work. Second, read the citizenship line before you invest time. The Co-Op requires US citizenship and a clearance. Third, for Reuters News, prepare before November. The window is about a month, and the program asks for clips, video or data work across reporting, photography and producing. Thomson Reuters publishes no class size, acceptance rate or conversion rate for US interns, so we don't give one.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Thomson Reuters internship?
No, summer 2026 internships have already run. For 2027, two US technical roles are open as of October 25, 2026: an Applied Scientist Intern ending November 27 and a Software Engineer Co-Op ending January 25. The Reuters News Internship for summer 2027 is expected to open in November.
When do Thomson Reuters internship applications open?
It depends on the role. The campus page says roles start in January, May and September, with new jobs posted at the beginning of each semester. The Reuters News Internship opens every November and closes in December. Thomson Reuters hasn't published exact 2027 dates for either.
Is Thomson Reuters hiring US interns right now?
Yes, narrowly. As of October 25, 2026, its job board lists an Applied Scientist Intern in San Francisco, a Software Engineer Co-Op in Rochester, New York and a part-time Student Brand Ambassador role for law students. The board's other US postings are not internships.
How much do Thomson Reuters interns get paid?
Thomson Reuters doesn't publish a figure. The two open technical postings show a placeholder pay range of $0, the Reuters News page says only that the internship is paid, and the campus page says internships are competitively paid. Ask the recruiter for the rate once you have an interview.
What is the Thomson Reuters interview process?
Apply on Workday, then complete any assessment the role requires, such as Pymetrics or HackerRank for some sales and technology roles. The first interview is a HireVue video interview, followed by an interview with the hiring team. If you succeed, the campus team emails you about the offer.
Do I need a PhD for a Thomson Reuters internship?
Only for the Applied Scientist role, which asks for a current PhD student or a master's student with research experience. The Software Engineer Co-Op requires US citizenship and a security clearance instead. The Reuters News Internship page lists no degree requirement. Check each posting's qualifications.
Are there non-technical internships at Thomson Reuters?
The campus page describes internships in sales, marketing, finance, operations, consulting, product strategy and more, and the Reuters News Internship covers journalism. But the US board listed none of the non-technical ones on October 25, 2026, so check at the start of each semester.
Do Thomson Reuters interns get full-time offers?
Thomson Reuters publishes no conversion rate. Reuters says successful interns are considered for future opportunities, and the campus page mentions the possibility of a returnship. The campus page features an applied scientist whose intern paper was accepted at a research conference, but that's one story, not a rate.
Two Thomson Reuters roles are open now, and Reuters News applications are expected in November. Apply where you qualify, and build a project you can talk about: a remote Externship gives you finished data, finance or product work for your Thomson Reuters interviews.
