Last updated: October 2026

Morningstar's summer 2027 internship applications closed on Monday, October 5, 2026. The firm posted six Chicago requisitions between September 8 and 15, 2026, and every one of them carried that end date on Morningstar's Workday board; all six were taken down on schedule (rechecked October 6, 2026). The program runs 10 weeks in person at the Chicago headquarters and pays $25 an hour, or $30 on the tech track, per Morningstar's own postings. In plain words: the summer 2027 window has shut, so the next door is summer 2028. You apply during 2027 (expected August to October), you intern in summer 2028.

So if you're reading this now, you're late for summer 2027 and early for summer 2028: applications for summer 2028 are expected between August and October 2027. Use the gap to build the research or data proof the six tracks ask for.

What Is a Morningstar Internship?

A Morningstar internship is a paid, 10-week summer program at Morningstar's Chicago headquarters for undergraduates heading into investment research, data, technology or financial services. Morningstar, Inc. is the investment research firm Joe Mansueto founded in Chicago in 1984; it reported $2,275.1 million in 2024 revenue and 11,085 permanent full-time employees at the end of 2024, and it owns PitchBook.

Each intern gets a department project matched to their background, a dedicated mentor, and a seat in a group case competition on a real Morningstar business challenge presented to senior leaders. The Business track places interns on teams such as Editorial, Market Intelligence, Product Management, Manager Research and the AI Office. And the program feeds the Morningstar Development Program, the firm's two-year early-career program, which rising seniors get early access to apply for.

When Do Morningstar Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Morningstar's summer 2027 wave is the clearest calendar in this series. All six public requisitions went up between September 8 and 15, 2026, and all six end on October 5, 2026: a four-week window. Morningstar's internships FAQ says positions are "typically posted between August and October," and community offer posts from earlier cycles are dated November and December, which fits a fall wave that closes early and decides offers before the winter break.

That puts the lead time at roughly 9 months from posting to an early-summer start (the exact start date isn't published). If Morningstar keeps this shape, applications for summer 2028 expected to open between August and October 2027, with a hard close a few weeks later.

Applications for summer 2027 closed on Monday, October 5, 2026, and all six Chicago reqs are off Morningstar's Workday board. The next window is for summer 2028, expected August to October 2027. Join the intern talent community for alerts and use the months in between to build proof.

With summer 2027 closed, a finished project is the best use of the gap before the summer 2028 window: the Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship for research and valuation, or the Attronica FP&A and Private Company Valuation Externship for the Corporate Finance track.
October 5, 2026CLOSED

Applications for summer 2027 closed on every public req. Morningstar's req text read "This role will be posted until October 5, 2026." There's no later wave for summer 2027 on the public board.

August to October 2027EXPECTED

Applications for summer 2028 expected to open, based on this cycle and Morningstar's note that internships are typically posted between August and October. Expect another short window with a single hard close.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This isn't a rolling program, so the advice isn't "apply early to beat the queue." It's simpler: Morningstar set one end date, October 5, 2026, on every summer 2027 requisition, and four of the six req bodies spell it out in words. The reqs came down on that date, and there's no second public wave for summer 2027.

A four-week window matters because most students start looking for summer internships in October and November, which is exactly when Morningstar has already stopped taking applications. For summer 2028, pick your track before August 2027 so you can apply in the first week rather than polishing your resume while the window runs.

Which Morningstar Internship Programs Should You Target?

Morningstar runs one Summer Internship Program with six US tracks for summer 2027, each on its own requisition. All six are in Chicago.

Every track links from the Morningstar internships page. Read the year requirement on the req itself, because the tracks don't all ask for the same class year.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Morningstar's FAQ and its six 2027 requisitions set these requirements:

• Class year: undergraduates who have completed two to three years of a four-year bachelor's degree. Business and Corporate Finance ask for third-year students; Tech, Sales and People & Culture accept second- or third-year students; Quant asks for students graduating in 2026 or later.

• GPA: a 3.0 minimum, stated in Morningstar's internships FAQ.

• Experience: "Between 0-2 years of professional work experience" on all six reqs.

• Work authorization: "Must possess unrestricted right to work in the U.S." on the Business, Corporate Finance, Sales, Quant and People & Culture reqs. The Tech req doesn't carry that sentence, so ask the recruiter before assuming sponsorship.

• Location: Chicago, five days a week in the office for the Business and Tech tracks.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

Treat it as one. Morningstar publishes the 3.0 minimum in its own FAQ, which is a stronger signal than the soft "outstanding academic record" line in the reqs. But the class-year rule trips up more applicants than GPA does: a second-year student who applies to the Business track, which asks for third-year students, is applying to the wrong req. Check the year line before you submit.

Based on 543 investment banking summer analysts at top investment banks from the classes of 2025 and 2026 (public LinkedIn profiles, aggregated). Six questions, under a minute.

Question 1 of 6

Which summer are you applying for?

Recruiting timelines differ by class year, so we compare you with the right group.

Question 2 of 6

Which group is your school closest to?

Firms recruit on campus in tiers. We match you against admits from schools like yours.

Question 3 of 6

Math and statistics count too. Major is not a hard filter, but it shifts how much your coursework has to prove.

Question 4 of 6

How many internships, externships or research positions have you held so far?

Count anything with a real employer, mentor or principal investigator attached. Retail and food service do not count.

Question 5 of 6

What Skills Does Morningstar Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We read all six summer 2027 requisitions in full. Three buckets come through.

Communication and leadership. Every one of the six asks for strong communication, and five mention leadership or campus involvement. The Business and Tech reqs end with a group case study presented "to senior leaders, stakeholders, and managers," so presenting is part of the job, not a soft extra.

Research and analysis. The Business req asks you to address a business problem "through thoughtful research, analysis, and creative thinking." The Quant req adds Python or R, SQL and basic statistics, and Corporate Finance asks for finance and accounting fundamentals.

Working in a fast-paced team. Four reqs ask for the ability to "thrive in a challenging, fast-paced environment," and five describe collaboration with teams or a cohort.

What Is the Morningstar Application and Interview Process Like?

Morningstar doesn't publish its interview format. Here's what its reqs say, plus what past applicants report:

1. Apply on Workday. One req per track, resume required, and every req asks you to include the word "Resume" in the file name.

2. Recruiter contact. A 2023 offer holder described a campus recruiter who stayed in touch through the whole process (community-reported).

3. Interviews. Past applicants describe two video interviews; a 2019 applicant finished a second Zoom interview on December 20 (community-reported).

4. Offer. Community offer posts are dated November and December, and one offer holder put the process at about two and a half months from application to offer.

If you applied, plan for a quiet stretch after October 5. A three-month wait isn't unusual here, and a short follow-up to your recruiter is fine.

What Students on Reddit Say

Morningstar threads on Reddit are few but specific, and they span several cycles.

One offer holder said a campus recruiter stayed in touch the whole way and the process ran about two and a half months from application to offer. Another applicant in the same thread was still waiting at the three-month mark.

A former summer intern called the program super valuable: it gave them early exposure to ESG research right before the topic took off, and they credit it with landing their first job out of college. Several commenters described the culture as relaxed for a finance firm.

A rising second-year student reported a part-time software engineering return offer from Morningstar for the school year after their summer internship. Their advice: put coursework first, and ask your manager to narrow you to one project.

How Do You Stand Out for a Morningstar Internship?

Morningstar doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate, so there's no honest way to quote your odds. What you can control is fit.

First, apply to the right req. Five of six reqs set a specific class year, and a mismatch is the easiest rejection there is.

Second, show research you've actually done. The Business req frames the summer as solving "a specific Morningstar business problem" through research and analysis. A short fund or company write-up, or a finished project from an Externship, gives an interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Third, say you want the MDP. Morningstar's own page calls the internship the path to the two-year Morningstar Development Program for rising seniors. Telling a recruiter you're aiming for that path signals you plan to stay, which is the point of a pipeline program.

And if you're a Tech applicant, bring code. The Tech req lists "Coding skills" as a preferred qualification and pays $30 an hour.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Morningstar internship?

No. Summer 2026 has already run, and summer 2027 is closed too: all six Chicago tracks came off Morningstar's Workday board on October 5, 2026. The next door is summer 2028, with applications expected between August and October 2027.

When do Morningstar summer 2027 internship applications close?

They closed on October 5, 2026. Morningstar posted all six summer 2027 requisitions between September 8 and 15, 2026, and each carried that end date; four of the req bodies said in words that the role would be posted until October 5, 2026. It was a hard deadline, not a rolling review, and applications for summer 2028 are expected between August and October 2027.

How much do Morningstar interns make?

Morningstar's 2027 postings pay $25 an hour for the Business, Corporate Finance, Quantitative Research, Sales and People & Culture tracks, and $30 an hour for the Summer Tech track. Over 10 weeks at 40 hours, that works out to roughly $10,000 or $12,000 before tax, by our arithmetic.

Where is the Morningstar internship located?

Chicago, at Morningstar's global headquarters. All six US summer 2027 tracks are based there, and the Business and Tech requisitions say interns work in the office five days a week. Morningstar's broader four-day hybrid policy doesn't apply to those interns, so budget for a full summer in the city.

What GPA do you need for a Morningstar internship?

A 3.0 minimum, per Morningstar's internships FAQ. You also need to have completed two to three years of a four-year bachelor's degree, and five of the six 2027 tracks require unrestricted US work authorization. Each track also sets its own class-year rule, so read the req before applying.

Does a Morningstar internship lead to a full-time job?

It can. Rising seniors who complete the program get early access to apply to the Morningstar Development Program, a two-year early-career program for recent graduates. The Tech req adds that interns can apply directly to the MDP after graduation. Morningstar doesn't publish a conversion rate.

What is the Morningstar internship interview process like?

Morningstar doesn't publish it. Past applicants on Reddit describe a campus recruiter contact and two video interviews, with offers arriving in November or December. One offer holder said the full process took about two and a half months from application to offer, so expect a long wait.

Does PitchBook run the same internship program?

No. PitchBook is a Morningstar subsidiary based in Seattle and posts jobs on its own board, which showed no intern roles when it was checked on September 28, 2026. The Morningstar Summer Internship Program described here is Chicago-only and runs through Morningstar's own Workday board.

The summer 2027 window closed on October 5, 2026. You have until August 2027 to build proof for summer 2028: a remote Externship gives you a finished research or data project to point at when the next window opens.
