Last updated: October 2026
Skanska USA's summer 2027 internships are open now. On October 26, 2026, its own careers site listed 45 intern and co-op postings in 27 US locations, from Boston and Queens to Seattle and Phoenix, and 30 of them state pay of $25 an hour. The first summer 2027 roles went up August 3 and 4, and the newest, in Phoenix, on October 22. No posting names a closing date. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and because each office posts its own role, the earlier you apply the better.
Quick Facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | Skanska USA's early career and intern page. Each posting is for one office. If your city has no role, the page has a talent community sign-up for people who can't find a local posting. This guide covers Skanska USA only, not Skanska's UK, Nordic or European programs |
| Application window (2027–28) | Open now for summer 2027. Heavy civil roles posted August 3 to 13, 2026, building and project engineer roles from August 6 through October 22, 2026. Winter 2026-27, spring 2027 and co-op postings are open too. No closing date in any posting. Summer 2028: expected from about August 2027, medium confidence |
| Rolling? | Long-open with no stated deadline. Postings arrived over 12 weeks and are all still live, and the newest are two weeks old. Skanska doesn't say when a role stops taking applications |
| Eligibility | Working toward a bachelor's in construction management, engineering or a related field, or the equivalent through experience. No class year or GPA is stated. 10 of the 45 postings say Skanska won't sponsor employment visas; the other 35 are silent. A background check is required |
| Duration | Summer internship length isn't stated. Co-ops run January to June (winter/spring) or July to December (summer/fall); the scheduler co-op lists March to September or September to March |
| Compensation | 37 of the 45 postings state hourly pay: 30 list $25.00 an hour, and the rest range from $20 to $26 an hour depending on the office. Eight postings give no figure. Benefits for interns aren't itemized |
| Return offers | Not published. Skanska gives no conversion rate or class size |
| Locations | 27 locations in 19 states plus DC. The most postings are in Massachusetts (7), Virginia (6) and New York (5), with more in Florida, DC and North Carolina. Work is on project sites and in offices; the postings don't offer remote work |
| # Programs | 45 postings in six groups: heavy civil infrastructure, project engineer, EH&S, specialty engineering (geotechnical, steel bridge, estimating, temporary works), co-ops, and winter or spring terms |
The row that matters most: Skanska posts one role per office, with no closing date, so apply to the posting in your own city now rather than waiting for a deadline.
Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often in 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship practices the budgeting and cost analysis behind Skanska's cost engineering and estimating work, and the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship builds the operations thinking used in site coordination. What Is a Skanska Internship?
A Skanska internship is a paid, on-site placement with Skanska USA, the American arm of the Swedish construction and development group. Skanska USA's postings describe about 6,300 US teammates, 28 US offices and a New York City headquarters. Interns assist the project manager and superintendent on assigned projects, across engineering, field engineering, cost engineering, safety, estimating and equipment. Skanska's own text says the program targets students in construction-related degrees. The company calls itself one of the world's largest construction and project development companies, a self-reported claim. Skanska doesn't publish a class size or a conversion rate on its own pages.

When Do Skanska Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Skanska posted its summer 2027 roles in waves by business. Heavy civil infrastructure roles came first, on August 3 and 4 in Hyattsville, Virginia Beach, the Outer Banks and Orlando, with the bulk on August 11 to 13. Building and project engineer roles then arrived office by office from August 6 through October 22, and winter, spring and co-op terms were posted between August 11 and September 1. For an early-June start, our assumption since the postings give no start date, the first roles opened about 10 months ahead. The last cycle we could read is summer 2025: archived copies of Skanska's own job feed show heavy civil roles posted August 9, 15 and 29, 2024, so August has now repeated twice, though we couldn't retrieve the summer 2026 wave.
Summer 2027 postings are open. 45 intern and co-op postings were live on October 26, 2026, and offices are still adding roles: Cincinnati on October 20 and Phoenix on October 22.
Apply to your own office's posting this week. No posting gives a closing date, but each office posts separately, and the oldest summer 2027 roles have been live since August. Several postings carry no year or season in the title (such as a plain "Intern" in Atlanta), so confirm the term before you apply.
Winter 2026-27 internships (Waltham, Washington DC, the Outer Banks, Providence) and the spring 2027 project engineer internship in Boston start in the coming months. Co-ops follow a January to June or July to December calendar.
Summer internships on project sites and in offices. Interns work under direct supervision with mentorship, supporting the project manager and superintendent. Skanska doesn't state a start date or length.
Summer 2028 postings expected, if the August 2024 and August 2026 pattern repeats (medium confidence, two observed cycles). Building roles may post earlier or later by office.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Skanska's postings don't announce a deadline, but waiting is still the wrong call. Each office posts and fills its own role, so a posting in your city can go quiet without notice, and there is one posting per market, not one national pool. The oldest summer 2027 roles have been live since August 3. Heavy civil postings, the biggest group, were all up by mid-August. Apply to the office closest to you, or to the cities you'd move to, and keep an eye on the board through winter for new postings.
Which Skanska Internship Programs Should You Target?
Skanska's postings fall into six groups. The counts are postings, one per office, not separate programs.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project Engineer Intern (16) | Building and project support: engineering, field engineering, cost, safety, estimating, finance and accounting | Summer 2027, spring 2027 and unspecified terms | Boston, Seattle, Portland, Bend, Boise, San Francisco, San Antonio, Phoenix, Cincinnati and more; $20 to $26 an hour where stated |
| Heavy Civil Infrastructure Intern (12) | Bridges, roads and transit work on heavy civil projects | Summer 2027 | Virginia Beach, Orlando, Washington DC, Alexandria, Waltham, Queens, Providence, Los Angeles, Seattle; $25.00 an hour in most |
| EH&S Intern (7) | Environmental, health and safety support on project sites | Summer 2027, winter 2027 and unspecified terms | Waltham, Queens, Virginia Beach, Outer Banks, Providence, Charlottesville, Cincinnati; $20 to $25 an hour |
| Specialty engineering (4) | Geotechnical (Maspeth NY), steel bridge (Carteret NJ), heavy civil estimating (Orlando), temporary works design (Virginia Beach) | Summer 2027; temporary works spring/summer 2027 | $25.00 an hour where stated |
| Co-ops (3) | Heavy civil winter/spring and summer/fall co-ops (Boston); preconstruction scheduler co-op (Queens) | January to June, July to December; scheduler March to September | Scheduler co-op names Primavera P6 and Bluebeam |
| Winter 2026-27 interns (3) | Heavy civil infrastructure in Waltham, Washington DC and the Outer Banks | Winter 2026-27 | Posted August 26 to September 1, 2026 |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Requirements are close to identical across postings. These come from the 45 postings we read on October 26, 2026.
• Education: working toward a bachelor's in construction management, engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering or a related field, or the equivalent through experience.
• Knowledge: basic phases of construction projects and basic math (geometry, algebra), plus computer skills including MS Office, HCSS and CGC.
• Class year and GPA: neither is stated in the postings we read.
• Work authorization: 10 of the 45 postings say Skanska isn't considering applicants who need employment sponsorship now or in the future. The other 35 don't mention it, so check your posting.
• Background check: required, per all 45 postings.

Do You Need a Construction Degree?
Not strictly. Skanska's own text says the program targets students in construction-related degrees but will consider people without formal education who show a strong desire to join at an entry level, and the postings accept the equivalent through experience. In practice the postings still list a bachelor's in construction or engineering as the expected path, so a business or finance major should lead with a specific reason for the interest, such as cost control or estimating.
What Skills Does Skanska Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Skanska's postings are templated, so the requirement list is the company's own rather than a market average. Almost every posting asks for communication, written and verbal, and knowledge of the basic phases of a construction project. Most name MS Office plus HCSS and CGC, the software Skanska lists for estimating and project work. Cost engineering and estimating duties appear in 41 of the 45. One scheduler co-op adds Primavera P6 and Bluebeam. Safety runs through the EH&S roles and the field engineering duties.
What Skanska looks for in interns
Skills across 45 Skanska intern & analyst job descriptions · intern and co-op postings on Skanska USA's careers site, October 26, 2026
Method: keyword match across the full text of the 45 intern and co-op postings on careers.usa.skanska.com, read on October 26, 2026. The postings share a few templates (heavy civil, EH&S, project engineer), so counts reflect Skanska's templates, not the wider market.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship you can finish while the postings are still open. The fit is partial, because no open Externship covers construction directly.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Cost and budget analysis | Cost engineering and estimating duties in 41 of 45 postings | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Project coordination and operations | Project engineer interns coordinate project activities with the project and operations manager | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Data and reporting | Interns gather and distribute project information; computer skills required | SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games |
| Infrastructure technology | Interest in construction technology and site data (a loose fit) | Hydroficient Advanced: IoT Cyber Defense |
The Attronica and Amazon rows are the closest fits. For HCSS, Bluebeam, Primavera and field skills, use class projects, a construction club or any site experience as your proof.
What Is the Skanska Application and Interview Process Like?
Skanska doesn't publish its interview stages, so this is what the careers site shows.
1. Pick your office. Search the early career page for the posting in your city and the term you want, since summer, winter, spring and co-op terms are separate postings.
2. Apply. Each posting's apply button goes to Skanska's applicant system, where you create a profile.
3. Talent community. If your city has no posting, the site offers a talent pool sign-up by location.
4. Interviews and offer. Skanska doesn't publish the format, number of rounds or timing.
Skanska publishes no interview questions.
What Students on Reddit Say
Two threads include first-hand intern comments. Both are brief, and the rest of the Skanska discussion on Reddit is from full-time staff.
A former Skanska intern who is weighing a large contractor against a mid-size one says their whole internship was electrical scope, which fits a data center but makes them worry about not seeing other trades. Others in the thread say big contractors can keep project engineers on one division for years.
Asked whether a Skanska offer beats a county job, one commenter who had interned there said the company values and invests in construction technology and called it a leader, then added that how much you use it depends on the office, team and manager.
How Do You Stand Out for a Skanska Internship?
First, apply to a specific office and a specific scope. Skanska posts by market, so name the heavy civil project or building type near you that interests you and why. Second, show you can work from drawings and numbers: the postings ask for basic math and cost and estimating exposure, so mention a class project with a budget or a takeoff. Third, check the term and the sponsorship line in your posting before applying, since 10 of 45 say no sponsorship. Skanska doesn't publish a conversion rate or class size, so any percentage you see elsewhere is unverified.

Is there a deadline for Skanska internships?
None is stated in any of the 45 postings. Roles posted in early August were still open on October 26, and offices were adding new ones. Each office posts and fills its own role, so apply early rather than waiting for a date that may never appear.
Where are Skanska internships located?

Is Skanska USA the same as Skanska in Europe?
No. Skanska USA is the American arm of the Swedish Skanska group and runs its own recruiting on careers.usa.skanska.com. This guide covers only its US internships and co-ops. Skanska's UK, Nordic and European programs post and hire separately, with their own dates and requirements.
Apply this week to the Skanska office nearest you, checking the term in the title. While you wait, a remote Externship gives you a finished analysis or operations project to talk about in the interview.
