On 3 October 2026 McCarthy Building Companies had 10 summer 2027 Intern Advantage postings open on its own Jobvite board, covering six regions and 26 cities from Sacramento to Atlanta. All 10 went live between 31 August and 13 September 2026, and none states a closing date. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

McCarthy is a St. Louis general contractor that has built since 1864 and has been 100% employee-owned since 2002. It hosted 341 interns in summer 2026, 88 of them returning, from 101 colleges, and it says 80% of its interns "return to school with a full-time offer". Its parent ranks #22 on ENR's 2026 Top 400 Contractors. Where California postings publish pay, it's $28 an hour, or $31 in the Bay Area.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. They sit alongside a McCarthy application, not in place of one: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the scheduling and operations planning a project engineer does every day, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the cost thinking behind budgets and change orders. What Is a McCarthy Internship?

A McCarthy internship is a paid summer placement on an active McCarthy jobsite through the company's Intern Advantage program. Project engineer interns report to the project manager or assistant project manager and help with subcontract administration, scheduling, procurement, submittals and MEP coordination; MEP and safety interns run their own tracks.

The program is large. McCarthy says its 2026 class of 341 interns came from 101 colleges and 57 majors, and six were on their fourth internship. Its intern page reports that 98.6% would come back for another summer and names a regional CEO, Mike Myers, who started as a McCarthy intern.

When Do McCarthy Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

McCarthy posted its whole summer 2027 wave in a two-week burst: the Southern Pacific project engineer and MEP postings on 31 August 2026, the safety postings on 1 September, Northern Pacific on 3 September, Southern on 8 September, Southwest on 9 September and Central on 13 September. That's about nine months before a typical late-May or June start.

Each posting covers a whole region, often three or four cities, and Jobvite lists it once per city, so aggregators show about 32 McCarthy listings for what are really 10 regional postings. We couldn't find dated summer 2026 postings to compare against, so the summer 2028 estimate below rests on this one cycle.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now in all six regions: project engineer internships everywhere, plus MEP and safety internships in Southern California and Nevada. No posting has a closing date, so the best time to apply is before your school's McCarthy fair.

Alongside your application: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship for scheduling and operations planning, or the Attronica FP&A Externship for cost tracking.
October 2026 (to 23 Oct)ROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

McCarthy's published campus calendar still has fairs, info sessions and interview days this month, including Boise State on 8 October, Cal Poly Pomona on 15 October, BYU-Idaho on 22 October and CSU Sacramento on 23 October. Applying before your school's event puts your name in front of the recruiters who are there.

November 2026 to spring 2027EXPECTED

Rolling review and offers for summer 2027. Several postings warn that McCarthy can't contact every applicant individually because of volume, so silence for a few weeks isn't unusual.

Summer 2027EXPECTED

The internship itself, expected to start in late May or June on a jobsite in your region. Safety interns commit to at least 10 weeks at 40 hours a week. McCarthy says 80% of interns go back to school with a full-time offer.

Late Aug to mid Sep 2027EXPECTED

Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post if McCarthy repeats this year's calendar. Treat that as a low-confidence estimate, since it's based on one measured cycle.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

McCarthy doesn't publish a deadline, so this is a rolling window, and rolling windows reward the early applicant. Each posting is a regional pool rather than a single seat, and the pool fills as recruiters meet students at fall fairs and interview days, most of which happen in September and October.

The postings themselves say McCarthy gets enough applications that it can't reply to everyone individually. If your region is your first choice, apply now, then follow up through the campus event or a recruiter rather than waiting for spring, when some regional pools may already be set.

Which McCarthy Internship Programs Should You Target?

McCarthy runs one program, Intern Advantage, with three tracks. These are the postings live on 3 October 2026:

TrackFocusLengthLive postings and pay
Project Engineer internshipSubcontract administration, scheduling, procurement, submittals, MEP coordination, QC and jobsite safety under the PM or APMNot stated (summer)6 regions: Central, Southern, Southwest, Northern Pacific, SoCal, Nevada; $28/hr SoCal and Sacramento, $31/hr Bay Area

Construction Safety internshipWeekly toolbox talks, site safety manual, new-hire safety onboarding, incident root-cause reviews, inspections10+ weeks, 40 hrs/weekSoCal and Nevada; $28/hr in SoCal

Graduating seniors aren't on any intern posting's class-year line; they apply to McCarthy's Entry-Level Project Engineer roles instead. The Intern Advantage page has the program overview and the on-campus events page lists this fall's fairs.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The gates differ by region and track, so read your own posting. Here's what the 10 postings say:

• Class year: "Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior" on the Central and Southwest project engineer postings; "Sophomore or Junior standing" on the Southern, SoCal, Nevada and Northern Pacific ones and on Safety. The MEP postings ask only that you're "currently enrolled" in a bachelor's program.

• Major: construction management or civil, electrical or mechanical engineering for project engineer and MEP; occupational health and safety or public health for Safety, where master's students are also eligible.

• Commitment: a "valid interest in pursuing a career in Construction/Project Management", willingness to relocate or commute within the region, and for Safety, reliable transportation to the jobsite.

• Not stated: GPA and visa sponsorship. None of the 10 postings mentions either, so ask a recruiter if they apply to you.

Can Freshmen Get a McCarthy Internship?

Yes, in some regions. The Central (St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha) and Southwest (Arizona) project engineer postings explicitly accept freshmen, while the Southern, California, Nevada and safety postings start at sophomore standing.

Starting early pays off here: 88 of McCarthy's 341 interns in 2026 were returners, and six were on their fourth summer, which suggests the program is built to bring the same students back.

What Skills Does McCarthy Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The project engineer postings share one duty list: contract and subcontract administration, scheduling, procurement and expediting, shop drawing and submittal review, MEP coordination, meeting notes, as-built plans, quality control and safety monitoring. The MEP postings focus on building systems and ask for "strong interpersonal skills"; the safety postings swap the project controls work for toolbox talks and incident investigation.

No posting names a software tool, so don't treat Procore or Bluebeam as a requirement, though knowing them won't hurt.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each of those duties can be practiced before your first day on site:

Coordinating people on a complex facility"Strong interpersonal skills are required" (MEP); healthcare is one of McCarthy's sectorsHealthcare Operations Consulting

None of these is a construction project, but each trains a habit McCarthy lists, from keeping a schedule honest to keeping a clean log, and each ends in finished work you can walk an interviewer through.

What Is the McCarthy Application and Interview Process Like?

McCarthy doesn't publish an intern interview guide. This is the path its postings, campus calendar and community reports describe:

1. Find your region's posting on McCarthy's Search Careers page and filter by Intern. One posting covers every city in the region, so choose the region you'd actually live in.

2. Meet McCarthy on campus if you can. Its on-campus events page lists fairs, info sessions and next-day interview slots at dozens of schools, running into late October 2026.

3. Interview. Community reports describe in-person interviews that focus on culture: how you deal with people and difficult situations, and which kind of work and which part of the country you want.

4. Wait for an answer. Postings warn that McCarthy can't contact each applicant individually because of volume and doesn't take status calls.

5. Offer and placement. Interns are assigned to an active project in their region, and some regions say you could be placed anywhere within them.

Since the interview leans on fit, know McCarthy's employee-ownership model and one or two current projects in your region before you walk in.

What Students on Reddit Say

Construction management students and McCarthy alumni talk about the company fairly often on Reddit, mostly about interviews and whether to accept an offer.

A senior construction management student with an in-person McCarthy internship interview was told to expect culture questions about working with people and handling tough situations, and to be ready to say what kind of work and what region they wanted.

Asked to choose between a McCarthy project engineer offer and an owner-side internship, commenters overwhelmingly said take McCarthy for its reputation and employee ownership. One former McCarthy intern dissented: they disliked their team and had to be on site from before 5am to 4pm.

A former employee who joined full-time straight out of school after McCarthy internships called it an extremely good company with some of the best benefits in the industry, and said most building teams don't overwork their people. They left only because they were kept in renewables.

How Do You Stand Out for a McCarthy Internship?

McCarthy publishes its class size (341 in 2026) but not how many people apply, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves line up with what the postings and recruiters ask for:

1. Apply early and by region. Pick the region you'd really move to, apply now while recruiters are on campus, and say why that region in your interview.

2. Arrive with the vocabulary. Know what a submittal, an RFI, a shop drawing and an as-built are, and how you'd keep a log of them. Safety applicants should know what a toolbox talk covers; an OSHA 10 or 30 card fits that track.

3. Plan to come back. About a quarter of the 2026 class were returning interns, and McCarthy says 80% of interns leave with a full-time offer. Show you're thinking past one summer.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 McCarthy internship?

No. The summer 2026 class has finished, but summer 2027 applications are open now. McCarthy posted 10 regional Intern Advantage postings between 31 August and 13 September 2026, covering project engineer, MEP and safety tracks, and none of them lists a closing date. Apply to your region's posting this fall.

When do McCarthy summer 2027 internship applications close?

McCarthy doesn't publish a closing date on any of its 10 summer 2027 postings, so treat it as rolling. Fall campus recruiting runs through late October 2026, with fairs and interview days at dozens of schools, and regional pools fill as offers go out. Applying in October is safer than waiting.

How much do McCarthy interns get paid?

Where McCarthy publishes pay, it's $28 an hour in Southern California and the Sacramento area and $31 an hour in the Bay Area, for project engineer, MEP and safety interns alike. Postings for Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and the Central region don't state pay. Possible subsistence comes on top.

Does a McCarthy internship lead to a full-time job?

Often, by McCarthy's own account. Its intern page says 80% of interns return to school with a full-time offer, though it doesn't give a year or sample size. In 2026, 88 of 341 interns were returning, and graduating seniors can apply to Entry-Level Project Engineer roles.

Who can apply for a McCarthy internship?

Freshmen through juniors on the Central and Southwest project engineer postings, and sophomores and juniors in the Southern region, California, Nevada and on the safety track. Majors are construction management or civil, electrical or mechanical engineering; safety takes occupational health and safety or public health students, including master's students. No GPA is stated.

Where are McCarthy internships located?

In six regions: Central (St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha), Southern (Dallas, Houston, Austin, Atlanta), Southwest (Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma), Northern Pacific (Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose), Southern California and Nevada. Every internship is on a jobsite, and postings require willingness to relocate or commute within the region.

How long is a McCarthy internship?

The safety internship is a 10-plus-week summer commitment at 40 hours a week. The project engineer and MEP postings don't state a length, so ask the recruiter. Expect a summer 2027 start in late May or June, based on when McCarthy welcomed its 2026 class.

What is the McCarthy internship interview like?

Community reports describe an in-person interview that's mostly about culture and fit: how you work with people, how you handle difficult situations, and which sector and region you want. McCarthy also runs next-day interview slots after some campus info sessions, so a fair can turn into an interview quickly.

McCarthy's summer 2027 postings are open now with no fixed close, so apply to your region this month, then use the weeks before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
