Last updated: October 2026
On 2 October 2026 The Walsh Group had 39 intern and co-op postings open on its own Workday board: 29 regional construction internships, 6 safety internships and 4 spring 2027 co-ops. Each posting covers a region and carries its own scheduled end date. The first two close on 13 November 2026, most close between 16 November and 1 December, and Chicago runs to 31 December. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027 (co-op students start in spring 2027).
Walsh is a Chicago general contractor, family-owned since 1898, that builds bridges, transit, water plants and buildings through Walsh Construction and Archer Western. It says it employs "more than 8,000 skilled tradespeople and professional staff" and ranks #16 on ENR's 2026 Top 400 Contractors. Where Walsh publishes intern pay, it's $19 to $26 an hour, with medical insurance and 401(k) matching.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. They work alongside a Walsh application, not instead of one: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the scheduling and operations planning a project engineer does daily, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the cost modeling behind change-order estimates. What Is a Walsh Group Internship?
A Walsh Group internship is a paid, roughly 12-week placement on a jobsite or in a regional office of Walsh Construction or Archer Western, working in project engineering, field management, estimating or safety. Interns help with RFIs, submittals, document control, subcontractor coordination and change-order pricing, and the requisitions say they're "trained to become a full-time employee after college graduation."
Walsh lists projects from "$1 million to $1 billion" across building, transportation, water and power, and runs 21 regional offices in the US and Canada, according to its company page.

When Do Walsh Group Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Walsh posted its summer 2027 wave between 26 August and 24 September 2026, about nine months before a typical late-May or June start. Walsh labels the internships "2026 - 2027" (its recruiting-year label), and they're 12-week summer placements. The co-ops say "Spring 2027" outright and run on a shorter lead of about four months.
The date that matters most is each posting's end date. Walsh runs one requisition per region, and each one has a single scheduled close in Workday. Central Texas closed on 1 October 2026; its requisition now returns the board's closed-posting response.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now in 29 regions for internships and 6 for safety internships, plus 4 spring 2027 co-ops. Central Texas has already closed. Apply to your region first, then use the weeks before the interview to build something you can talk about.
First scheduled closes: Safety Internship Program, Northeast Region and Kentucky & Ohio Regions. Then 16 November for nine mostly western regions, including Alaska, Arizona, Utah, Seattle, the Bay Area and Southern California.
Most remaining regions close: seven East Coast regions on 20 November, La Porte and Safety Midwest on 27 November, Wisconsin, Phoenix, Kentucky and all four spring 2027 co-ops on 30 November, and eleven more on 1 December.
Chicago Region internship scheduled to close on 31 December. Spring 2027 co-op terms are expected to start in January, in line with university co-op calendars.
The 12-week internship itself, expected to start in late May or June, on a jobsite or in a regional office. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post in late August to September 2027 if the calendar repeats.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Walsh doesn't run a rolling window. Every one of the 39 live postings carries a scheduled end date in Workday, and once a posting ends, the requisition is pulled: Central Texas went from "2 days left to apply" on 28 September to closed on 1 October.
Two safety regions close on 13 November and nine more regions on 16 November, six weeks from now. Workday end dates can be extended, but you can't plan around that. Since each requisition covers a whole region, often several cities, apply to the region you'd actually move to, and do it before its date.
Which Walsh Group Internship Programs Should You Target?
Walsh recruits for all of its companies through one Workday board and one entry-level site. These are the tracks live on 2 October 2026:
| Program | Focus | Term | Live postings and closing dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internship Program (regional) | Project engineering and field management; some interns support estimating and preconstruction pursuits | 12 weeks preferred, summer 2027 | 29 regions; close 16 Nov to 31 Dec 2026 (Central Texas closed 1 Oct) |
| Safety Internship Program | Field safety walks, new-hire orientations, incident reports, subcontractor safety coordination | Minimum 12 weeks, summer 2027 | 6 regions; close 13 Nov to 1 Dec 2026 |
| Co-op Program | Same duties as the internship, rotating across divisions | 3 to 5 rotations of 4 months, from spring 2027 | Chicago, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin; all close 30 Nov 2026 |
| M.E.R.G.E. Program | For business, communications and other non-construction majors | Not stated | No live posting on 2 Oct 2026 |
Archer Western, Walsh's open-shop company based in Atlanta, hires through the same board, so its southern and western roles appear in this list too. The college recruiting page has the program overview.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The requisitions set very few hard gates. Here's what they say, and what they leave out:
• Degree: "Seeking a bachelor's degree is preferred" on every internship and co-op posting. No major is required.
• Term: "The ability to work a 12-week work schedule is preferred"; safety internships run a minimum of 12 weeks.
• Relocation: "Specific roles may require relocation." Safety interns who relocate are eligible for a living allowance.
• Co-op: enrollment in a university cooperative education program is preferred.
• Not stated: GPA, class year and visa sponsorship. None of the 39 postings mentions them, so ask the recruiter if any applies to you.

Do You Need a Construction Major?
No. The internship postings list no required major, and Walsh runs a separate M.E.R.G.E. program for business, communications and liberal arts students. Construction management and civil engineering students still fit the duties most directly, from RFIs to change orders.
What helps a non-major is showing you can read a schedule, price a scope and write clearly, since those come up in every posting.
What Skills Does Walsh Group Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The postings share one duty list, in three buckets: project controls (document control, RFIs and submittals, scheduling contracts and materials), cost work (estimating change orders, soliciting bids), and field coordination (subcontractors and safety).
The safety postings swap the cost work for field safety walks and incident reports. No posting names a software tool.

Method: full-text read of all 39 live postings via Walsh's Workday API, 2 Oct 2026. Walsh uses three shared templates (29 internships, 4 co-ops, 6 safety internships), so these counts show how many postings carry each duty, not 39 independent job descriptions.

Walsh's regional deadlines sit in the middle of the busiest posting season of the year. Apply to Walsh by your region's date, and treat other civil and construction employers' fall postings as the same deadline season.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each of those duties can be practiced before day one:
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduling contracts and materials; coordinating subcontractors | "Scheduling of various contracts and materials"; "Coordination of subcontractors" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Estimating change-order costs | "Estimating cost for change orders" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis, Private Company Valuation |
| Document control, RFI and submittal logs | "Document control"; "Writing RFIs, submittals, and assisting in change orders" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
None of these is a construction project, but each trains a habit Walsh lists, from keeping a schedule honest to pricing a change to keeping a clean log, and each ends in work you can describe in an interview.
What Is the Walsh Group Application and Interview Process Like?
Walsh doesn't publish an interview guide for interns. This is the path its postings and community reports describe:
1. Find your region's posting on entrylevel.walshgroup.jobs or the Workday board. One posting covers a whole region, often two to six cities, so pick the region you'd relocate to.
2. Apply before that posting's end date. Dates differ by region, from 13 November to 31 December 2026.
3. Meet Walsh on campus if you can. An Archer Western safety intern on Reddit says they got the role through their school's job fair.
4. Interview. New-grad project engineers on Reddit describe a single onsite interview with an offer call the next day, or a second round with the project manager and operations manager, sometimes with a project tour.
5. Offer. Interns are placed by region and matched to projects; Walsh says it matches positions to your academic and career goals.
Community reports are about new-grad roles, and they describe the interview as conversational, focused on the position and current projects, so know the region's big projects before you walk in.
What Students on Reddit Say
Most Walsh threads are about new-grad project engineer offers, not internships, so read them as context for where the internship leads.
A safety major did an Archer Western internship the summer between junior and senior year, landed it through a school job fair, and was offered a full-time job at the end of the summer, so senior year started with a job lined up.
New grads describe a fast process: an onsite interview and an offer call the next day. One former applicant found recruiting responsive but said salary talks were shut down quickly, as if each year's cohort has a set starting rate, while the relocation package moved a little.
Commenters call a stint at Walsh a solid resume booster, with the usual big-contractor warning: long hours for young project staff, and an experience that depends heavily on the project and group.
How Do You Stand Out for a Walsh Internship?
Walsh doesn't publish applicant numbers or a class size, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves line up with what the postings ask for:
1. Apply by region, early. Pick the region you'd really move to, check its end date, and apply well before it. If two regions work for you, each has its own posting.
2. Arrive with the vocabulary. Know what an RFI, a submittal and a change order are, and be ready to explain how you'd keep a log of them. Safety applicants: an OSHA 10 or 30 card fits the safety track, and Walsh reimburses LEED Green Associate certification for safety interns.
3. Show you'll commit to the 12 weeks and the move. Both are listed as preferences on every posting, and a candidate who's clearly flexible is easier to place.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Walsh Group internship?
No. Summer 2026 internships have finished, but summer 2027 applications are open now in about 30 regions. The earliest scheduled closes are 13 November 2026 for two safety regions and 16 November for nine regions. Central Texas already closed on 1 October, so check your own region's date.
When are Walsh Group summer 2027 internship deadlines?
Each regional posting has its own scheduled end date: 13 November 2026 for Safety Northeast and Kentucky & Ohio, 16 November for nine mostly western regions, 20 November for seven eastern ones, then 27 November to 1 December for most others. Chicago runs to 31 December. Dates can be extended.
How much do Walsh Group interns get paid?
Where Walsh publishes pay, interns earn $19 to $22 an hour in Colorado, $21 to $24 in Chicago and Safety Midwest, $21 to $26 in Seattle and the Bay Area, $22 to $26 in Southern California, $22 to $25 in Massachusetts, and $23 to $26 in New York and New Jersey.
Does Walsh offer co-ops?
Yes. Four spring 2027 co-op postings (Chicago, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin) are open until 30 November 2026. Co-ops rotate through at least three four-month work terms in different divisions, and Walsh prefers students enrolled in a university co-op program. They get the same benefits as interns.
How long is a Walsh Group internship?
About 12 weeks. Every internship posting says the ability to work a 12-week schedule is preferred, and the safety internship runs a minimum of 12 weeks. Expect a summer 2027 start in late May or June, though Walsh's postings don't state an exact start date.
Does Walsh hire interns full-time?
That's the stated aim, though no conversion rate is published. The postings say interns are trained to become full-time employees after graduation, Walsh's entry-level site features project engineers who started as interns and co-ops, and one Archer Western safety intern on Reddit reports a full-time offer.
Can non-construction majors apply to Walsh?
Yes. No internship posting requires a specific major, and Walsh runs a separate M.E.R.G.E. program for students in business, communications and other fields outside construction and engineering. No M.E.R.G.E. posting was live on 2 October 2026, so watch the entry-level site.
Is Archer Western part of The Walsh Group?
Yes. Archer Western is Walsh's open-shop construction company, based in Atlanta and focused on the south and west, alongside Walsh Construction and Walsh Canada. It recruits interns through the same Workday board, which is why its regions appear in the same list of postings.
Walsh's first deadlines are six weeks away, so apply to your region now, then use the gap before interviews to build one finished project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
