On 3 October 2026 Hensel Phelps had 17 summer intern postings open on its own careers site, across operations, safety, estimating, VDC, services and facility management, all posted between 11 August and 25 September 2026. None has a deadline, but students on Reddit have reported Hensel Phelps internship offers in late October in 2020, 2023 and 2024, so the fall career-fair season is the real window. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027 (the postings say "summer intern program" without naming the year).

Hensel Phelps is an employee-owned general contractor founded in Greeley, Colorado, in 1937, ranked #11 on ENR's 2026 Top 400 Contractors, and its careers page reports an average employee tenure of 13 years. Where its postings publish pay, interns earn $20 to $28 an hour.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. They sit alongside a Hensel Phelps application, not in place of one: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the materials and schedule planning an operations intern supports, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the cost modeling behind estimating. What Is a Hensel Phelps Internship?

A Hensel Phelps internship is a paid, full-time summer placement on one of the company's projects, organized by district and discipline. Operations interns assist field and office engineers with subcontractor and materials management, submittals, RFIs, layout and daily reports; safety interns support the safety manager; estimating, VDC, services and facility management interns have their own postings.

Former interns on Reddit say operations interns usually start either in the office or in the field and switch halfway through the summer. Every posting frames the internship as a two-way trial, "an extended opportunity to evaluate if the fit is right" for a career with Hensel Phelps after graduation.

When Do Hensel Phelps Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Hensel Phelps posted its summer intern wave over about six weeks: the first mission-critical operations posting on 11 August 2026, the Pacific Northwest postings on 1 September, Mid Atlantic on 8 September, Pacific, Southcentral and mission-critical tracks on 14 and 15 September, services on 17 September and the last Rocky Mountain safety posting on 25 September. That's about eight to ten months before a typical late-May or June start.

The careers page's events list still carries a "Summer 2026 internships" heading, but the events under it are this fall's campus visits, including Washington State, Virginia Tech, UCF, Clemson and Wentworth on 5 to 7 October 2026. We couldn't find dated postings from the last cycle, so the summer 2028 estimate rests on this one.

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now in all seven districts: 7 operations postings, 6 safety, and one each for estimating, VDC, services and facility management. Hensel Phelps still has campus visits on its calendar for 5 to 7 October.

Alongside your application: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship for materials and schedule planning, or the Attronica FP&A Externship for cost modeling.

Offers expected. Students on Reddit reported Hensel Phelps summer internship offers in hand by 17 October 2023, 31 October 2020 and 31 October 2024. Postings stay open after that, but the best seats in each district go early.

November 2026 to spring 2027EXPECTED

Postings without a close stay open until filled, so later applicants can still land a spot, mostly in districts and tracks that haven't filled. Check your district's posting before applying.

Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post if Hensel Phelps repeats this year's calendar, a low-confidence estimate based on one measured cycle.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Hensel Phelps doesn't publish a deadline, so this is a rolling window, and the community record says it moves fast. In three separate years students posted that they already had a Hensel Phelps summer offer by mid or late October, which means the decisions happen during and right after the fall career fairs.

Each posting is a district funnel covering many cities, and you pick locations inside the application. If you want a particular district, apply now and go to the campus event if Hensel Phelps visits your school; waiting until spring means competing for whatever's left.

Which Hensel Phelps Internship Programs Should You Target?

Hensel Phelps posts one requisition per district per discipline. These are the tracks live on 3 October 2026:

The careers page has the program overview and campus events. The specialist tracks (safety, estimating, VDC, services) are separate postings, so a safety or facilities major should apply there rather than to operations.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The postings set majors and physical requirements but leave several common gates unstated:

• Degree: "preferred to be pursuing a 4-year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture or Construction Management" for operations and estimating; mechanical engineering also fits VDC; occupational safety and health for safety; facilities management for services.

• Software: "Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel based templates, Prolog, Primavera and AutoDesk Suite" appears across the postings.

• Physical: "Moderate Work", including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, climbing ladders and scaffolding, working outdoors, and the ability to operate a vehicle.

• Not stated: class year, GPA and visa sponsorship. None of the 17 postings mentions them, so ask a recruiter if they apply to you.

Can Freshmen and Sophomores Apply to Hensel Phelps?

The postings don't set a class year, so nothing stops you applying. Community reports point the same way: former interns describe coming back for a second or third summer, which only works if you start before junior year.

The practical gate is the work itself. Show you can handle a jobsite and the software list, and your year matters less.

What Skills Does Hensel Phelps Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Every posting carries the same software line (Excel templates, Primavera, Autodesk, and on most, Prolog) and asks interns to support quality control and the project safety plan. Operations postings add the project engineer basics: subcontractor and materials management, submittals, RFIs, layout and surveying, and daily reports.

The specialist tracks swap those for their own work: takeoffs and bids for estimating, BIM and laser scans for VDC, operational data for services.

None of these is a construction project, but each trains a habit Hensel Phelps lists, from tracking materials against a schedule to pricing scope, and each ends in finished work you can walk an interviewer through.

What Is the Hensel Phelps Application and Interview Process Like?

Hensel Phelps doesn't publish an intern interview guide. This is the path its postings and former interns describe:

1. Pick your district and track on the careers site's Internships page. One posting covers a whole district; you select locations inside the application.

2. Meet Hensel Phelps on campus. Its events list shows fairs and visits through early October 2026. Students describe going from a fair or company presentation to an interview slot.

3. Interview. Community reports describe campus or on-site interviews about your coursework, prior jobsite experience and which district you want.

4. Offer. Students have reported offers in hand by mid to late October; some describe housing being offered wherever they were placed.

5. Placement. Interns are assigned to one project, full-time and on site, and operations interns usually rotate between office and field halfway through.

Ask about housing, overtime and your district's projects on the offer call. Reddit reports say interns are hourly with overtime pay, but the postings don't mention either, so confirm both.

What Students on Reddit Say

Construction management students talk about Hensel Phelps internships fairly often on Reddit, mostly around October offer decisions.

A junior with Hensel Phelps and PCL offers in hand by the end of October chose Hensel Phelps. Commenters said interns are hourly with overtime, that housing was offered wherever the intern was placed, and that strong interns get asked back for a second summer and then a field engineer offer.

A former intern described 60-hour weeks and said the experience depends heavily on which project and team you land on, while others in the thread split between people who love the company and people who left over the hours.

How Do You Stand Out for a Hensel Phelps Internship?

Hensel Phelps doesn't publish applicant numbers or a class size, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves line up with what the postings and former interns describe:

1. Apply before the October offer rush. The postings are open now; apply, then show up at your school's fair with the posting number for your district.

2. Name the software. Every posting lists Excel templates, Primavera and Autodesk, and most add Prolog. Put any real exposure on your resume, even a class project.

3. Consider a specialist track. Safety, estimating, VDC and services are separate postings with narrower majors. If you fit one, it can be a less crowded way in, and the skills carry straight into a second summer.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Hensel Phelps internship?

No. The summer 2026 program has ended, but summer intern applications for 2027 are open now: 17 postings across operations, safety, estimating, VDC, services and facility management, posted between 11 August and 25 September 2026. None has a closing date, but past offers have gone out in October.

When should I apply for a Hensel Phelps summer 2027 internship?

Now, in October 2026. The postings are open with no deadline, but students on Reddit reported Hensel Phelps offers in hand by mid or late October in 2020, 2023 and 2024. Apply before or right after your school's career fair, while recruiters are still deciding.

How much do Hensel Phelps interns get paid?

Where Hensel Phelps publishes pay: $26 to $28 an hour in Hawaii, $24 to $26 in Washington, $23 to $26 in Virginia, $20 to $24 for Colorado operations, $21 to $23 for Rocky Mountain safety, and from $20 for Colorado services interns. Texas and mission-critical postings don't state pay.

What internships does Hensel Phelps offer?

Six tracks: operations (field and office engineering), safety, estimating, VDC, services and facility management. Operations and safety have postings in most districts; estimating and VDC are posted for the mission-critical group, and services and facility management for the services group, with offices in five states.

Does Hensel Phelps provide housing for interns?

The postings don't say. Several students on Reddit and one parent report company-provided housing during the internship, including a 2024 intern told housing would be offered wherever they were placed. Treat it as likely but unconfirmed, and ask about it, along with overtime, on your offer call.

Do Hensel Phelps interns get full-time offers?

Hensel Phelps doesn't publish a conversion rate, but it describes the internship as a way to evaluate a long career with the company after graduation. Former interns on Reddit describe being asked back for a second or third summer and then receiving a field engineer offer as seniors.

What is a Hensel Phelps internship like day to day?

Operations interns typically spend half the summer in the project office, on submittals, RFIs and daily reports, and half in the field with field engineers, on layout, quality checks and subcontractor coordination. It's full-time and on site, and former interns describe long hours on busy projects.

What software should I know for a Hensel Phelps internship?

The postings list Microsoft Office, "specifically Excel based templates", plus Primavera for scheduling, Autodesk Suite, and on most postings Prolog for project management. VDC interns also work with BIM models and laser scans. Class projects in any of these are worth putting on your resume.

Hensel Phelps offers have historically landed in October, so apply to your district now, then use the gap before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
