Markel is the insurance company most students have never heard of and most investors have. Founded in 1930 in Norfolk, Virginia to insure the jitney buses nobody else would touch, Markel Group is now a Fortune 500 holding company that reported $15.51 billion in total operating revenues and $2.11 billion of net income to shareholders for fiscal 2025. It writes specialty risks other carriers avoid, horses and boats and summer camps and equine mortality, and it owns outright businesses that have nothing to do with insurance at all. Investors call it a mini Berkshire. For a student, though, the reason to target Markel is not the size. It is that the internship is explicitly designed as a hiring pipeline and the company says so out loud. Markel's Global Director of Community Engagement calls the program "basically a 12-week interview", and Markel states that the conversion rate of summer interns to full-time employees has risen each year. Six 2027 requisitions went live on August 24, 2026 and none of them carries a deadline.

Compensation$24.00–$28.50 per hour, employer-published in both 2027 intern requisitions. The Underwriting Training Program pays $34–$45/hr, but that is the post-graduate program, not the internship. Housing is explicitly not provided, and the IT requisition adds that relocation is not either
Return offersNo published percentage. Markel states that the conversion rate has risen each year, names three outcome paths (a term-time part-time role, a return internship, or full-time employment), and says Information Technology has had the most success converting interns

The Underwriting Training Program runs across four regions: New York, Richmond and Alpharetta, Chicago, and Scottsdale and Woodland Hills

Two things to get right before you click apply: the 3.0 GPA floor is published in four separate places and is a real screen, and the Underwriting Training Program is a post-graduate job rather than an internship. Applying to the wrong one is an instant reject.

What Is a Markel Internship?

A Markel internship is a paid, 12-week summer program at Markel Group, described in every requisition as "a fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries... a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory and investment operations around the world." Interns are assigned "daily work responsibilities similar to that of a full-time, entry-level Markel employee" rather than a shadowing rotation, and Markel wraps structure around that seat: a functional-leader education series where a department head spends an hour explaining their area, a small-group research project on emerging insurance risks presented to functional leaders, a mentor buddy separate from the supervisor, a personal-branding session tied to The Markel Style, a small-group lunch with the executive leadership team, and two performance reviews, one informal at the midpoint and one formal written review at the end that feeds the full-time decision. Markel lists nine intern job families: accounting and finance, claims, human resources, information technology, information management, marketing and communications, operations, sales, and underwriting. Markel rates 3.5 out of 5 across 168 Indeed reviews.

When Do Markel Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Markel batched its 2027 launch: six requisitions all went live on August 24, 2026, two internships and four regional underwriting trainee roles, and every one of them returned an empty end date. Markel's own early careers page confirms the mode in plain words, "Applications for 2027 are now open," without naming a closing date anywhere. So the honest guidance here is apply now, not apply before some date. Two timing details are worth knowing. First, only two of the nine intern job families Markel lists have posted, so students targeting claims, HR, marketing and communications, operations, sales, information management or underwriting should join Markel's own Early Careers Talent Network, which is a mailing list rather than a job, and watch the board through the fall. Second, watch out for a stale line on Markel's own site: the underwriting trainee section still shows "College graduate as of June 2026" while linking to the 2027 requisitions. The live requisition text says June 2027, and the requisition governs.

Now · September 2026YOU ARE HERE

The 2027 Finance Internship Program and the 2027 IT Internship Program are both live in Richmond, alongside four regional Underwriting Training Program roles for June 2027 graduates. No deadline exists on any of them. Your entire application is a resume, so the work is making that resume carry leadership and analytical evidence on its own.

The Corporate Strategy Externship and the Breaking Games Data Analysis Externship are remote, real-company projects that put a finished, checkable deliverable on a resume-only application.
August 24, 2026EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

All six 2027 requisitions went live on a single day and were confirmed still open on September 6, 2026. Rolling, no-deadline processes reward week-one applicants; roles simply close when they fill.

September 2026 to January 2027

The remaining seven intern job families, claims, human resources, marketing and communications, operations, sales, information management and underwriting, are expected to post. An actuarial intern requisition existed in the prior cycle but had no 2027 equivalent on the board.

Fall 2026

Campus recruiting. Markel cites national recruiting events and growing relationships with colleges and universities as pipeline inputs but names no specific schools or fairs, so the online application is the reliable route.

June to August 2027

The internship runs 12 full-time weeks at the Richmond headquarters on a hybrid schedule of three days in office and two remote. The Underwriting Training Program cohort also starts in June 2027.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Markel published a start date and no end date, which is the shape that punishes people who wait. Six requisitions went live on one day in late August 2026, review runs rolling, and roles come down when they fill without an announcement. There is a second, Markel-specific reason to move fast: the application is a resume and nothing else. No cover letter, no essay, no transcript. That sounds easy and it is actually harder, because there is no narrative to explain a thin resume, and Markel screens explicitly on "demonstrated leadership abilities and analytical skills." A resume you send in September can be improved between now and an interview; a seat that closed in October cannot be reopened. Third, the two live intern requisitions are Finance and IT, which are the two of the nine job families with the strongest documented conversion story. Markel's CTO names two former interns who joined the software engineering and business systems analyst teams in a single year, and Markel says outright that Information Technology has had the most success converting interns. Those seats have the shortest queue right now and the longest queue in three months.

Which Markel Internship Programs Should You Target?

Markel runs two distinct US early-career products and students conflate them constantly, partly because they sit on the same board with confusingly similar "2027" titles. They have different audiences, different pay and different outcomes.

Early Careers Talent NetworkAnyone whose target job family has not posted yetOngoingAn always-on Workday entry that is lead capture, not a hiring requisition. Markel describes it as a way to receive notifications as internship roles open

The distinction between the internship and the Underwriting Training Program is the single most expensive thing to get wrong on this board. One is a 12-week summer job for current students at $24–$28.50 an hour; the other is a full-time post-graduate role for June 2027 graduates at $34–$45 an hour. Read the class-year line before you apply. Everything live is on Markel's Workday board, which Markel says is the only URL to trust.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Markel publishes its criteria on both the requisitions and its early careers page, and unusually for an insurer the GPA floor is a stated number rather than a preference:

Enrollment: current college student. The early careers page says rising sophomores, juniors or seniors; the Finance requisition narrows that to rising juniors and rising seniors preferred.

GPA: "Strong academic performance (3.0 GPA minimum)" on both intern requisitions, written as 3.00 on the underwriting trainee requisition, and repeated on the early careers page. Four separate published statements of the same floor.

Major: "Students from all majors and subject areas are encouraged to apply" for the internship generally. The IT requisition is the exception and asks for a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field, or military experience.

Work authorization: permission to work in the United States, and no sponsorship. The IT requisition states it twice: "Candidates that will not require sponsorship now or in the future" and "Markel does not provide visa sponsorship for this position, now or in the future."

Location: IT interns must be able to work at the Richmond, VA headquarters; Finance interns are located there too. Hybrid is three days in office and two remote.

Application materials: your resume, and nothing else. Both requisitions list exactly one item to upload.

Culture fit, stated as a criterion: "Candidates who have extraordinary potential and share our passion to live The Markel Style." Every requisition carries this line.

Overhead close-up of a tidy desk staged for a video interview, wireless earbuds resting on a closed notebook, a glass of

Does Markel Have a Hard GPA Cutoff?

Yes, and it is one of the few insurers that says so in a number rather than a hint. "3.0 GPA minimum" appears on the Finance requisition, the IT requisition, the underwriting trainee requisition and the early careers page. When an employer publishes a floor in four places, treat it as a real screen rather than an aspiration. If you are under it, the productive move is not to apply anyway to these two requisitions; it is to build the evidence that makes a later application work and to watch for the seven job families that have not posted yet. What Markel weights alongside GPA is visible in the requisition text: demonstrated leadership abilities, analytical skills, excellent written and oral communication, and, on the underwriting side, an unusually blunt "competitive nature and strong desire to win." Because the application is a resume alone, all of that has to be legible without a cover letter to carry it. Named leadership roles, quantified analytical work and a finished project you can describe in one line do more here than they would at an employer that reads essays.

What Skills Does Markel Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Markel's requisitions are notable for what they do not say. Across all six 2027 requisitions, exactly one tool is named: the MS Office suite. There is no SQL requirement, no Python, no Guidewire or Duck Creek, no Tableau or Power BI. That is not an oversight to paper over with a generic insurance tech stack; it is a signal about what Markel screens on, which is judgement, communication and demonstrated capability rather than a checklist of software. What the requisitions do name repeatedly is character: analytical skills and demonstrated leadership on the Finance side; the ability to prioritise and execute independently in a high-pressure environment, keen attention to detail, and understanding how individual deliverables fit a strategic roadmap on the IT side; and on the underwriting trainee side, the ability to "review, analyze, accept and decline risks to ensure profitability", exposure to "data analytics and digital technologies that focus on the future of underwriting", and a high-energy self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit. Underneath all six sits The Markel Style, which every requisition treats as a scored criterion.

Method: counts are of Markel 2027 requisitions, not of postings or applicants. All six live 2027 requisitions were read in full from Markel's own Workday tenant; the four underwriting trainee requisitions are regional variants of one program and share body text, which is why underwriting-specific criteria count 4. The intended hiring.cafe skill-frequency snapshot returned HTTP 403 and produced no data, so nothing here comes from an aggregator.

How Is Demand for Insurance & Underwriting Interns Moving Right Now?

Insurance and underwriting early-career hiring right now: September 2026

Qualitative signals from Markel's own 2027 requisitions and program materials · not an aggregate market sample

Specialty carriers are posting early: Markel opened its full 2027 slate on August 24, 2026, and a Markel employee has noted on Reddit that the company posts underwriting trainee roles before the larger carriers do
=
Underwriting still enters through a post-graduate program, not an internship: four of Markel's six live 2027 requisitions are underwriting trainee roles for June 2027 graduates, and no underwriting internship was posted
Analytics is entering the underwriting job description: the trainee requisition promises exposure to “data analytics and digital technologies that focus on the future of underwriting,” and Markel’s strongest documented intern conversion department is Information Technology

September 2026 is this page's baseline. The signal is structural rather than volumetric: at a specialty insurer, the internship is the route into finance and technology while underwriting is entered after graduation, and the technology side is where conversion actually happens. Students who want to underwrite should plan a two-step path.

Method: these are qualitative signals read from Markel's six live 2027 requisitions, its US early careers page and its own summer internship article, on September 6–7, 2026. This is not aggregate market data; no industry-wide posting sample was available because the hiring.cafe skill-frequency tool returned HTTP 403. Treat it as a September 2026 baseline for one employer.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

And every skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project, which matters more here than usual because a resume is the entire application.

Skill (from real JDs)JD evidenceExternship that builds it
Research, synthesis & presenting to leadersThe intern research project on emerging risks in the insurance industry, gathered in small groups and presented to functional leadersCorporate Strategy Externship mentored by Eric Ries

Quantitative risk & financial reasoningThe Finance internship’s accounting and internal audit placements, and the trainee requisition’s “review, analyze, accept and decline risks to ensure profitability”Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling

How close is the overlap? The Corporate Strategy project is scoped research on an ambiguous business question, synthesised into a recommendation and presented, which is Markel's flagship intern deliverable rehearsed in advance. The Breaking Games project is the end-to-end analysis workflow the Data Services placement assumes. And underwriting is priced risk selection, so a financial modeling project builds exactly the reasoning the trainee requisition describes as analysing complex problems and making sound recommendations in a fast-paced environment.

What Is the Markel Application and Interview Process Like?

Markel publishes no interview-stage description at all. What it does publish is the application mechanics, and they are unusually spare:

1. Go straight to the Workday board. markelcorp.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/GlobalCareers. Markel puts a scam warning in every requisition: legitimate postings appear only on Markel Group Careers, and legitimate recruiter emails come only from markel.com addresses.

2. Confirm which program you are applying to. Internship for current students, Underwriting Training Program for June 2027 graduates. The titles both start with 2027 and the pay and audiences are different.

3. Submit a resume. That is the entire package. Both intern requisitions list exactly one application requirement, and there is no cover letter, essay or transcript at this stage.

4. Join the Early Careers Talent Network if your job family has not posted. Markel lists nine intern job families and only two were live, and the talent network is Markel's own stated mechanism for telling you when the rest open.

5. Prepare for interviews without a published script. Markel documents no stage list, no round count and no question themes. What it does document is post-hire: an informal mid-point review around week six and a formal written review at the end that feeds the full-time decision.

6. Offer. Rolling, with no published release date.

The most useful preparation is reading The Markel Style, which every requisition names as a screened criterion and which Markel summarises in five lines: we're all about people, we win together, we strive for better, we enjoy the everyday, we think further. Bring a story for at least two of them. For the underwriting trainee application specifically, lean into the requisition's own language: it asks in plain words for a high-energy self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit and a "competitive nature and strong desire to win." Candidates who present as purely analytical read as a mismatch against that phrasing. Our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool covers the same behavioral-question pressure and format.

None

None of the usable threads is about the summer internship itself, which is worth saying plainly. What they do cover is the surrounding early-career track at Markel: how hard it is to break in, when the trainee roles post, and what the compensation looks like once you are full-time.

Insurance professionals describe Markel's early-career programs as genuinely hard to break into. One career-changer reported being rejected outright, and commenters suggested that networking, or a side entry through claims or an assistant role, is a more realistic route in than a cold application. Read that as a reason to apply early rather than a reason not to apply.

r/InsuranceProfessional paraphrased, 2026 thread · read the thread

A Markel employee told a graduating senior asking about timing that Markel had already posted its underwriting trainee roles in December while the bigger carriers had not, and advised watching Markel's own board early in the cycle. The 2027 slate went live even earlier, in late August 2026, which is consistent with that pattern.

A Markel employee explained the company's profit sharing as roughly six percent of salary paid in Markel stock into your 401(k) whether or not you contribute yourself, on top of a match. The same person noted that moving up from support roles into underwriting takes years rather than months. This describes full-time employee benefits, not intern benefits, and Markel's requisitions scope their benefits paragraph to full-time employees without saying whether interns qualify.

How Do You Stand Out When Your Whole Application Is One Resume?

Five moves. First, meet the GPA floor or target a different requisition, because 3.0 is published in four separate places and published floors in insurance are usually real screens. Second, make leadership and analytical evidence legible without a narrative. Markel names both as criteria and gives you no cover letter to explain them, so a finished project with a named deliverable beats a list of coursework. Third, for IT, name your placement area. The requisition lists five, IT Support Services, API Management and Innovation, DevOps and Quality Engineering, Data Services, and US Specialty Insurance Technology, and saying which one you want and why differentiates you instantly from applicants who wrote "technology." Fourth, arrive with an opinion. Markel's CHRO describes the executive lunches as reverse mentoring, where executives want students' perspectives on the business and the culture, and the group research project has recently focused on emerging risks in the insurance industry. Having a view on cyber aggregation, climate-driven property loss or AI in claims is directly on-brief, and it is the kind of thing you can build in a fall externship. Fifth, budget for Richmond yourself. Housing is explicitly not provided and the IT requisition adds that relocation is not either. That is a stated constraint rather than a negotiation, so have an answer ready if logistics come up.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Markel internship?

No, that cycle has closed and the 2026 class has run. What is open is 2027: Markel's own early careers page says "Applications for 2027 are now open," and six requisitions went live on August 24, 2026, the Finance and IT internships plus four regional underwriting trainee roles. None carries a closing date, so apply now rather than waiting for an announcement.

What is the Markel internship application deadline?

There isn't one. Every 2027 requisition returned an empty end date, and Markel publishes no closing date on the requisitions or on either early careers page. Treat the process as rolling until filled. Any expiry you see on a third-party job board is that board's own auto-expiry logic, not Markel's.

How much do Markel interns get paid?

Markel publishes the number: $24.00 to $28.50 per hour, stated in the 2027 requisition text for both the Finance and IT internship programs. Do not confuse that with the Underwriting Training Program's $34 to $45 per hour, which is a full-time post-graduate role rather than an internship. Housing is explicitly not provided, and the IT requisition adds that relocation is not either, so budget for Richmond yourself.

What GPA does Markel require for internships?

A 3.0 minimum, published in four separate places: the 2027 Finance requisition, the 2027 IT requisition, the underwriting trainee requisition where it is written as 3.00, and Markel's US early careers page. Published GPA floors in insurance are usually genuine screens rather than aspirations, so treat this as a gate.

What is the difference between the Markel internship and the Underwriting Training Program?

The internship is a 12-week paid summer job for current college students, rising sophomores through seniors, at $24 to $28.50 an hour. The Underwriting Training Program is a full-time job for people who graduate in June 2027, at $34 to $45 an hour, that runs a structured curriculum across several US locations and leads to an underwriting position on satisfactory completion. They sit on the same board with similar 2027 titles, and applying to the wrong one is an immediate rejection.

Does Markel sponsor international students for internships?

No. Three of the six 2027 requisitions state it in different wordings, and the IT requisition says it twice: candidates must not require sponsorship now or in the future, and "Markel does not provide visa sponsorship for this position, now or in the future." The early careers page requires permission to work in the United States. There is no workaround here.

What do Markel interns actually do?

Real work, by design. Markel assigns interns "daily work responsibilities similar to that of a full-time, entry-level Markel employee" rather than a shadowing rotation. Finance interns are placed in accounting, finance, global procurement, global disbursements or internal audit; IT interns are placed in IT Support Services, API Management and Innovation, DevOps and Quality Engineering, Data Services, or US Specialty Insurance Technology. Around that sit a functional-leader education series, a small-group research project on emerging insurance risks presented to leaders, a mentor buddy, a personal-branding session and an executive lunch.

Do Markel interns get full-time offers?

Markel publishes no percentage, so nobody should quote you one. What it does say is that the conversion rate has risen each year, that the program is "basically a 12-week interview," and that there are three outcome paths: a part-time role during the school year, a return internship the following summer, or full-time employment on graduation. Information Technology has the strongest documented record, with Markel's CTO naming two former interns who joined the software engineering and business systems analyst teams in a single year. The mechanism is two performance reviews, an informal check-in at the midpoint and a formal written review at the end that feeds the decision.

Markel's 2027 requisitions opened in late August with no deadline behind them, and your entire application is one resume. Spend the fall making it carry something: a remote Externship puts a finished project with a real company on the page, which is exactly the leadership and analytical evidence Markel says it screens for.
