H&R Block pays its Embark interns $25 an hour, gives them paid time off during the company's firm-wide Reboot Week, and provides a housing stipend for anyone whose permanent address is more than 50 miles from the Kansas City metro. The program is called Embark, it runs 11 weeks out of the company's headquarters in downtown Kansas City's Power & Light District, and in 2026 it ran 18 May to 31 July. H&R Block was founded in 1955 by brothers Henry and Richard Bloch, trades as NYSE: HRB, and reported roughly $3.95 billion in revenue with about 70,900 employees and approximately 9,000 retail tax offices across North America, Australia, Ireland and India. Embark won a Yello/WayUp Top 100 Internship Programs award in 2023 and a Vault Top 150 Intern Programs award for 2026. And here is the thing most students get wrong: Embark is a corporate internship in IT, finance, analytics and product at the Kansas City headquarters. It has almost nothing to do with the seasonal tax-preparer jobs that dominate H&R Block's search results.

What Is a H&R Block Internship?

An H&R Block Embark internship is an 11-week, paid, corporate summer placement at the company's Kansas City headquarters, built around four pillars: Professional Development, Giveback, Networking and Connected Culture. H&R Block (NYSE: HRB), founded in 1955 by Henry and Richard Bloch, reported roughly $3.95 billion in revenue with about 70,900 employees and approximately 9,000 retail tax offices across North America, Australia, Ireland and India. Embark has hosted interns in Information Technology, Finance, Data Science and Analytics, Talent Acquisition and Product Management. Each intern is paired with both a hiring manager and a young professional mentor, and the program ends with a high-impact project presented to senior leadership. The Embark program won a Yello/WayUp Top 100 Internship Programs award in 2023 and a Vault Top 150 Intern Programs award for 2026. This is not the same thing as a seasonal tax-office job. Seasonal Tax Associate and Tax Professional roles are retail positions at one of thousands of H&R Block offices, hired through a completely different applicant portal, requiring the H&R Block Income Tax Course or Tax Knowledge Assessment, and running through the January-to-April tax season.

When Do H&R Block Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

H&R Block does not publish a recruiting calendar for its Embark internship, so the timeline below is reconstructed from the 2026 cycle. The Embark 2026 requisition was posted ahead of an 18 May start and stated $25 per hour, a housing stipend for students more than 50 miles from Kansas City, and paid PTO during the company's firm-wide Reboot Week. The company has not yet posted the Embark 2027 requisition, and the only live action available today is joining the Embark talent community. Seasonal tax-office roles, by contrast, are already hiring at volume: the Field iCIMS portal carried 50-plus open requisitions in September 2026. These are a completely different job on a completely different portal.

Now · September 2026YOU ARE HEREEXPECTED

Zero Embark 2027 requisitions are live. A full enumeration of H&R Block's 600 corporate requisitions on 2026-09-07 found no intern role. The only action today is joining the Embark talent community at careers.hrblock.com. Meanwhile, seasonal tax-office roles are already hiring at volume on a separate portal.

The Breaking Games E-Commerce Externship and the TikTok Social Media Externship are remote, real-company projects you can finish before the posting goes live.
Autumn 2026 to Early 2027EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Embark 2027 posting expected to appear on the corporate iCIMS portal at careers-hrblock.icims.com. The 2026 cycle posted ahead of an 18 May start, so applications should open well before spring. Watch the corporate portal specifically; the general careers.hrblock.com search has 18,000-plus open seasonal jobs that will bury it.

Interviews and offers. H&R Block has not published the Embark interview format, but the 2026 requisition describes behavioral and role-specific evaluation. Expect questions about product thinking, cross-functional teamwork and data-driven decision making for business and analytics tracks.

Reboot Week. H&R Block's company-wide paid shutdown (29 June to 3 July in the 2026 cycle). Embark interns receive this as paid PTO.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

H&R Block's Embark class is small: roughly 25 to 30 interns based on the published 2022 and 2023 press releases. That means every seat matters and early applicants have an advantage once the requisition goes live. The 2026 requisition explicitly stated that no previous work experience is necessary, which means the screen falls almost entirely on GPA, coursework and whatever evidence of initiative you can show. A completed project in data analysis or product thinking is the cheapest way to turn "no experience necessary" into "here is the project I ran anyway." Do not wait until the posting appears to start building that evidence. Join the talent community now, build something real over the autumn, and apply in the first week the requisition appears.

Which H&R Block Internship Programs Should You Target?

H&R Block runs two distinct early-career pathways at its Kansas City headquarters, plus thousands of seasonal roles at retail tax offices that are a completely different proposition. Which one to target depends on whether you want a corporate summer experience, a 12-month engineering launch pad, or seasonal tax-season income.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The Embark 2026 requisition (Product Management track) published unusually explicit eligibility criteria, including a hard GPA floor and a clear statement that no prior experience is needed:

Education: seeking a degree in Business Administration, Business/Data Analytics, Business Management or a similar discipline.

GPA: 3.0 or above — stated as a requirement in the requisition itself. This is unusually explicit and is almost certainly being screened.

Work experience: "No previous work experience necessary." H&R Block is recruiting for trajectory, not track record.

Other attributes: ability to work in a diverse team and independently; highly motivated, organized, reliable and detail-oriented; strong written and verbal communication; quick learner comfortable with new software and databases.

Work model: on-site at Kansas City HQ. The program design (executive lunches, Royals games, service events, housing stipend) presumes physical presence.

Does Embark Require Tax Knowledge?

No. Nothing in the Embark requisition mentions tax knowledge, the Income Tax Course or the Tax Knowledge Assessment. Current H&R Block associates on Reddit confirm the TKA is not required for corporate roles. The 2026 requisition's only technical asks are business, product and analytics coursework plus comfort with new software and databases. The TKA is a hard gate for seasonal tax-office roles, not for Embark.

What Skills Does H&R Block Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

H&R Block's Embark requisition reveals a product-and-analytics orientation that most students would not associate with a tax company. The 2026 Product Management requisition asks for product discovery, user-story writing, Agile ceremonies and data-driven decision making. The only two named software tools are Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams. The wider department list (IT, Finance, Data Science and Analytics, Talent Acquisition) implies the skill mix varies by track, but only the Product Management JD was recoverable, so the chart below reflects that single track honestly.

How close is the overlap? The Embark requisition says "No previous work experience necessary," which means the screen falls on GPA, coursework and initiative. The Breaking Games deliverable produces the data-driven metrics story the requisition asks for, the TikTok project rehearses the consumer-research and product-discovery thinking the Product Management track screens for, and the Wayfair project supplies the Agile vocabulary the requisition names explicitly.

What Is the H&R Block Application and Interview Process Like?

H&R Block has not published the Embark interview format. What is documented from the 2026 cycle and the employer's own careers site:

1. Join the Embark talent community today. This is the employer's own pre-posting mechanism and the only live action available in September 2026.

2. Watch the corporate iCIMS portal at careers-hrblock.icims.com, not the general careers search. H&R Block has 18,000-plus open jobs across its portals, nearly all seasonal. A single Embark requisition will be invisible in the noise unless you search the corporate portal directly.

3. Apply when the Embark requisition appears, expected autumn 2026 to early 2027. The 2026 requisition stated GPA 3.0 or above, no prior experience needed, and targeted business, analytics and product management majors.

4. Interview. The format is not published. Prepare for behavioral questions about teamwork, data-driven decisions and cross-functional collaboration. Speak the "Connected Culture" language: reference Make Every Block Better (the volunteer platform) and Belonging@Block honestly.

5. Offer and onboarding. Housing stipend provided for students whose permanent address is more than 50 miles from the KC metro. The program runs on-site at the Power & Light District HQ.

Because the interview format is not published, prepare broadly: STAR-method answers focused on initiative, collaboration and working with data are the safest bet given what the requisition reveals. Our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool covers the same behavioral-question pressure and format.

What the Community Says

Reddit has limited Embark-specific discussion, but three threads clarify the most common confusion about H&R Block hiring: the split between the corporate Embark program and seasonal tax-office roles.

Current H&R Block associates confirm the split directly. The Tax Knowledge Assessment is a hard gate for seasonal tax-office roles and can be taken for free, but associates do not believe it applies to the corporate Embark internship. One seasonal associate put it plainly: you must pass the TKA to be hired for a tax role, but for corporate-level jobs, previous tax experience is just a plus, not a requirement.

For students with nothing on the resume yet, one tax season at H&R Block visibly moved the needle. One commenter could not land an accounts-receivable or bookkeeping job, did a season at H&R Block, and immediately got more interest on applications. They are now a bookkeeper. The counter-view in the same thread is equally blunt: H&R Block on a resume can actively hurt you for other accounting roles. Both perspectives are real, and they apply to the seasonal side, not Embark.

In 2018, accountants on Reddit did not believe H&R Block had real internships at all. One commenter's first instinct was that if H&R Block said it had internships, it was "flat-out lying." That criticism was fair at the time and was aimed squarely at the retail side. Embark, launched as a rebuilt 11-week corporate program in Kansas City in 2023 and since recognized by Yello/WayUp and Vault, is a different thing entirely.

How Do You Stand Out When the Requisition Says No Experience Required?

Three moves, all executable before the posting goes live. First, know which internship you are applying to and say so. Embark is a corporate program at the Kansas City HQ in IT, finance, analytics and product. Walking into an Embark conversation talking about wanting to do tax returns signals you have not read the requisition. Second, meet the 3.0 GPA line and put it on the resume. The Embark requisition states this as a requirement, which is unusually explicit and means the number is being screened. Third, build the evidence the requisition implicitly asks for. "No previous work experience necessary" means H&R Block is recruiting for trajectory. A finished project in data analysis, product discovery or consumer research converts that blank space into a story about initiative. Finish a remote Externship this autumn, speak the Connected Culture language with a concrete volunteering example, and apply in the first week the posting appears. The class is roughly 25 to 30 people. Every seat matters.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 H&R Block internship?

No. The Embark 2026 program ran 18 May to 31 July 2026, and the requisition is no longer live. The next open cycle is summer 2027: based on the 2026 cycle, Embark 2027 is expected to post between autumn 2026 and early 2027. Join the Embark talent community at careers.hrblock.com now and apply in the first week the posting appears.

How much do H&R Block Embark interns get paid?

The Embark 2026 requisition stated $25 per hour, plus paid PTO during the company's Reboot Week and a housing stipend for students whose permanent address is more than 50 miles from the Kansas City metro. The 2027 rate has not been published.

Is the H&R Block internship the same as working at a tax office?

No, and this is the single most important thing to understand. Embark is a corporate internship at the Kansas City HQ in business, technology and analytics roles. Seasonal Tax Associate and Tax Professional roles are retail jobs at one of thousands of H&R Block offices, hired through a completely different applicant portal, requiring the H&R Block Income Tax Course or Tax Knowledge Assessment, and running through the January-to-April tax season. They are not the same job, not the same recruiter, not the same portal and not the same competitive bar.

What GPA do I need for an Embark internship?

The Embark 2026 requisition states a GPA of 3.0 or above. That is an explicit written requirement, unusual among internship postings, so treat it as a real screen.

Do I need tax knowledge for Embark?

No. Nothing in the Embark requisition mentions tax knowledge, the Income Tax Course or the Tax Knowledge Assessment. Current H&R Block associates on Reddit confirm the TKA is not required for corporate roles. The requisition asks for business, product and analytics coursework, not tax preparation.

Where is the Embark internship, and is housing provided?

Downtown Kansas City, Missouri, at H&R Block's headquarters in the Power & Light District, on-site. In the 2026 cycle a housing stipend was provided for students living more than 50 miles from the KC metro. In 2023 H&R Block provided housing directly. Either way, non-local students are supported.

Does an Embark internship lead to a full-time job?

H&R Block publishes no conversion rate. Its own careers page promises "exciting opportunities to interview for full-time roles" after the internship. Separately, the company runs a 12-month IT Accelerate program that places early-career candidates directly into Associate Software Engineer roles.

Can I do a seasonal tax-office job while I wait for Embark?

Yes, and those roles are open right now. Dozens of Tax Associate, Pre-Season Tax Professional and Block Advisors Tax Advisor requisitions were live in September 2026. They require no prior tax experience, but they do require passing the H&R Block Income Tax Course or the free Tax Knowledge Assessment first, and they are in-person, evenings-and-weekends work during tax season. It is a different job with a different purpose, but it puts H&R Block on the resume.

Embark's small class fills from a posting that has not appeared yet. Spend the runway building proof: a remote Externship turns "no experience necessary" into a finished project a 2027 application can point at.
