The Department of State pays its student interns, but its 2027 window has already shut. Applications for the Student Internship Program for the Spring and Summer 2027 cohorts are closed while State selects candidates, and the program page now says future cycles "will open at a later date." No Student Internship Program announcement is open on USAJOBS today. The next doors to watch are a Fall 2027 cohort (the page's own table says applications open in February) and applications for summer 2028, whose dates State hasn't published. In plain words: you apply during 2027 or later, you intern in summer 2028 at the earliest. Interns are paid at GS-04, step 1, with furnished housing and travel to orientation covered, and only U.S. citizens who can hold a Secret clearance can apply.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. While State's next window is unpublished, the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you policy-style data work to cite, and the Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior Externship builds audience research you can point to for public-communications roles. What Is a Department of State Internship?

A Department of State internship is a paid, temporary appointment inside the U.S. foreign affairs agency, usually in a Washington, DC bureau and sometimes at an embassy or field office. The main route is the Student Internship Program, which the Department describes as designed to provide "substantive experiences in a foreign affairs environment." Official examples of intern work include joining meetings with senior U.S. or foreign officials, drafting or editing cables, reports and talking points, and supporting bilateral and multilateral events. The Department also runs Pathways internships through separate USAJOBS announcements, and hosts the Virtual Student Federal Service.

When Do Department of State Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Student Internship Program posts one fixed USAJOBS window per cohort. Its own table lists October for summer, February for fall and July for spring, but the program page already says Spring and Summer 2027 applications are closed, so the table isn't a reliable calendar. State hasn't published the close date or the next window on its own pages. The program page says only that future application cycles will open at a later date.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Spring and Summer 2027 applications are closed. The program page, last updated on 7 October 2026, says the Department is selecting candidates, and a search of USAJOBS on 16 October 2026 found no Student Internship Program or Pathways announcement for State.

Winter 2026–27

Sign up for State's update list from the program page, build your USAJOBS profile in the Resume Builder (uploaded resumes can't be used), and get an official or unofficial transcript ready, since applications without one are rated ineligible.

~February 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Expected, low confidence: applications for a Fall 2027 cohort, based on the February opening in the program's general timeline table. The Spring and Summer 2027 cycle didn't follow that table, so treat the month as a lead, not a promise.

Not publishedEXPECTED

Applications for summer 2028: State hasn't published the date on its own pages. Watch the Student Internship Program page, its update sign-up and a USAJOBS alert.

Summer 2028

Summer interns enter on duty between June and August, per the program table. Clearance steps run for months after a conditional offer, so a summer start depends on clearing before the cohort begins.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This is a hard-deadline program, not a rolling one. Each cohort is a USAJOBS announcement with a close date, and the 2027 posting is shut. Late entry isn't offered, and applicants who miss the window wait for the next cohort. Two things make a missed notice costly. The next window date is unpublished, so an alert is the only reliable warning, and the program can be cut: Reddit posts from March 2025 describe a cleared summer cohort being cancelled during a federal hiring freeze, which the program page doesn't mention. Set the alert now.

Which Department of State Internship Programs Should You Target?

The Department runs three separate routes. Keep them apart, because each has its own application, pay and eligibility.

ProgramFocusDurationKey skills
Student Internship Program (paid, GS-04 step 1)Bureau-level work in DC and some embassies and field offices: cables, reports, talking points, event supportSpring (start Feb to Apr), summer (Jun to Aug), fall (Sep to Dec)Writing, Microsoft Office, discretion; Secret-clearance eligibility

Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS)Remote projects for federal agencies, run through vsfs.state.gov; we couldn't confirm pay or dates there on 16 Oct 2026Academic-year projectResearch, writing, data, design

Details sit on the Student Internship Program page and the Pathways page. Pay isn't confirmed on the official VSFS pages we could read, so check vsfs.state.gov before you plan around it.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

These rules come from State's program pages and are applied strictly.

• Citizenship: U.S. citizen at the time of application, for both the Student Internship Program and Pathways.

• Age: 18 or older for the Student Internship Program; 16 or older by the closing date for Pathways.

• Education: a current undergraduate with at least 60 credit hours by the start date, a current graduate student, or a graduate within two years of the start. Veterans on active duty within two years of the start also qualify.

• Enrollment: at least part-time at the time of application; breaks of up to five months are allowed.

• Clearance: able to receive and maintain a Secret clearance (Student Internship Program) or a Secret or Top Secret clearance (Pathways).

• First time only: you can't have taken part in State's Student Internship Program, the U.S. Foreign Service Internship or the Foreign Service Fellowship Program before.

• Insurance: proof of medical insurance, with international coverage if you're placed overseas.

Is the 3.2 GPA Negotiable?

The program page lists a 3.2 minimum, current or at graduation, as an eligibility requirement and describes no exceptions. An official or unofficial transcript is required, and applications without one are rated ineligible. Pathways sets a lower floor of 2.0, held at application and throughout the appointment. If you're under 3.2, Pathways announcements and other agencies are the realistic routes.

What Skills Does the Department of State Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

State publishes no skills list, so the clearest signals are the duties on its program page. They point to writing and editing (cables, reports, talking points), briefing and meeting support (events, meetings with senior officials) and public communication (explaining the Department's work to U.S. and foreign audiences). A community post from a State bureau also named Microsoft Outlook and PowerPoint proficiency and professional email etiquette as gaps it saw in recent interns.

Note: No skills chart: the Student Internship Program closed before we could read a posted announcement, and State publishes no required-skills list, so we have no job descriptions to count. The skills above come from the Department's own duty list.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each row ties a duty State lists to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to describe.

Skill (from real JDs)JD evidenceExternship that builds it
Evidence-based writing for policymakersOfficial duty: "draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points"Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics

Message strategy and campaignsOfficial duty: materials used "in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives"; supporting events and conferencesBeats by Dre Creative Advertising Strategy

None of these Externships is connected to the Department of State, and none replaces a clearance. They help because your next application will ask for specific examples, and a finished project is a concrete one.

What Is the Department of State Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from State's Student Internship Program page.

1. Build your USAJOBS profile. Use the Resume Builder, because uploaded resumes can't be used for this program.

2. Apply during the window. Search USAJOBS for the Department of State Student Internship Program, complete the five application sections and attach a transcript. You can edit until the announcement closes.

3. Review and selection. The program team reviews applications, and a Selection Committee identifies finalists and recommends host bureaus, based mainly on Department needs and your interests where possible.

4. Conditional offer and clearances. Finalists and alternates get conditional offer letters, then start medical clearance (Bureau of Medical Services) and security clearance (Bureau of Diplomatic Security). The final offer names your host bureau, and a cleared alternate can fill a vacated spot.

Plan for months of clearance paperwork after the offer. The general table shows clearances running about six months for the summer cohort.

What Students on Reddit Say

Applicants on Reddit mostly discuss the long wait for notification, how hard the program is to get, and one cancelled cycle.

A former intern called the program one of the hardest internships to get and said a fellow intern needed five tries before getting in, urging applicants not to give up.

Several people holding cleared offers for summer 2025 said they got an email in mid-March saying the cycle was cancelled and final offers rescinded, which they tied to the federal hiring freeze.

r/usajobs offer holders (Mar 2025), paraphrased · read the thread

Responders said the internship isn't a formal pathway to a Foreign Service career, but that posts do try to give interns substantive work, and a past intern recalled mostly traditional-age undergraduates in the cohort.

How Do You Stand Out for a Department of State Internship?

First, clear the paperwork gates before the window opens: a 3.2 GPA, a transcript and a USAJOBS resume built in the Resume Builder, since a missing transcript makes an application ineligible. Second, stay flexible on bureau. Placement is based primarily on Department needs, so a narrow preference helps less than a clear account of what you can do. Third, expect to try more than once, and apply to Pathways and other agencies when State is closed. State doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate, and the Student Internship Program isn't a conversion pathway.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2027 Department of State internship?

No. State's Student Internship Program page says Spring and Summer 2027 applications are closed while candidates are selected, and the page was last updated on 7 October 2026. A USAJOBS search on 16 October 2026 found no State internship announcement. Watch for the next cohort, and check Pathways announcements, which post as needed.

When do Department of State internship applications open?

State hasn't published the next dates. Its general table lists October for summer, February for fall and July for spring, but the Spring and Summer 2027 cohorts were already closed by October 2026. State hasn't published summer 2028 dates on its own pages, so use the update sign-up and a USAJOBS alert.

Is the Department of State internship paid?

Yes. Student Internship Program interns are paid at GS-04, step 1 as temporary State employees, with travel to orientation and furnished housing covered. Pathways interns are paid by GS grade, set by education level. The program page gives no dollar rate. Virtual Student Federal Service pay isn't confirmed on its official site.

What GPA do I need for a State Department internship?

The Student Internship Program lists a 3.2 minimum GPA, current or at graduation, and describes no exceptions. You also need 60 credit hours if you're an undergraduate, or to be a graduate student or recent graduate. Pathways sets a lower cumulative floor of 2.0, held at application and throughout the appointment.

Do I need a security clearance?

You must be able to receive and maintain a Secret clearance for the Student Internship Program, or a Secret or Top Secret clearance for Pathways. Clearance steps start after a conditional offer, with medical and security checks. The general table shows them running about six months for a summer cohort.

Can international students apply?

No. Both the Student Internship Program and Pathways require U.S. citizenship at the time of application, and applicants must be able to obtain a security clearance. International students can look at organizations that recruit globally, such as the United Nations or the World Bank.

Can I intern at an embassy?

Sometimes. The program page says the paid internship offers the opportunity to work in embassies and field offices throughout the world, but most opportunities are offered at the bureau level in Washington, DC. Placement depends mainly on Department needs, and overseas placements require medical insurance with international coverage.

Does a State Department internship lead to a job?

Not automatically. Student Internship Program service isn't a conversion pathway, and it counts toward federal retirement only if you're later appointed to a career position. Pathways interns can convert to the competitive service after 640 hours and a favorable recommendation, but State says it isn't obligated to make an offer.

The Spring and Summer 2027 window is shut and the next one is unpublished, so set your State update sign-up and USAJOBS alert today. If you want a finished project to describe in your next application, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
