Last updated: October 2026
On 3 October 2026 the UN Secretariat had 67 internship openings on UN Careers, 16 of them at Headquarters in New York, and the typical opening stayed open for just 15 days. There's no summer wave and no single deadline. Departments post openings all year, each with its own window, for internships of two to six months.
So the plain-words version is different from most internships: you apply to individual openings as they post, and openings with summer 2027 start dates are expected from about February to May 2027. One more fact up front: the Secretariat internship is unpaid.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real organization, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Arceh Children's Environmental Health Analytics Externship builds the research skills UN notices ask for, and the Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture Externship fits the data roles. What Is a United Nations Internship?
A United Nations internship, in this guide, means the UN Secretariat Internship Programme: an unpaid placement of two to six months in a Secretariat department or office, such as Economic and Social Affairs, Peace Operations or the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Interns work under a staff supervisor and aren't staff members.
The Secretariat serves the UN's 193 Member States from New York, with offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi. But UNICEF, UNDP, UNHCR, UN Women and other UN funds and agencies run their own internship programmes with different rules, and several of them pay a stipend. Those aren't covered by the Secretariat rules on this page.

When Do United Nations Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The Secretariat doesn't recruit interns on an academic calendar. Its job board shows internship openings every month, and each one targets a start one to four months out: the live New York notices ask for starts from October 2026 through February 2027.
For summer 2027, expect openings with summer start dates from about February to May 2027, and expect each to close within about two weeks. Since 28 September, six New York openings closed and nine new ones posted, which is how fast this board turns over.
Applications are open right now for 16 New York openings, and 13 of them close between October 5 and October 20, 2026 (11:59 p.m. New York time). They're for starts this fall and winter, not summer 2027.
Openings keep posting for winter and spring 2027 starts; one live OCHA notice already runs February to July 2027. Three year-long New York rosters stay open until January 7, March 23 and May 6, 2027.
Openings with summer 2027 start dates are expected to post across departments, each open about two weeks. Check UN Careers every week in this window.
Shortlisted applicants are contacted directly by the hiring manager for an interview. Once you accept, you arrange your own visa, travel, insurance and housing.
Internships of two to six months begin, full-time at 35 hours a week or part-time, hybrid or remote where the notice allows. They're unpaid.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Each UN internship opening has its own closing date, and across the 67 live notices the median window is 15 days. The shortest is 6 days. That's a short window, and a missed one doesn't come back: the opening simply drops off UN Careers.
So set a weekly reminder to check the board, and keep a draft application ready in Inspira. Applicants on Reddit describe spending up to two days tailoring a single application, so a two-week window isn't as generous as it sounds.
Which United Nations Internship Programs Should You Target?
There's one Secretariat programme, but each department posts its own openings. These were live in New York on 3 October 2026:
| Department or office | Example opening | Duration | Closes (New York time) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) | Economic Affairs Intern; ICT intern at the sustainable development support office | 2 to 6 months | Oct 11, 2026 |
| Peace Operations and DPPA-DPO | Political Affairs Intern; DDR Programming Support Intern; GIS Intern | 3 to 6 months | Oct 8 to Oct 13, 2026; GIS roster Jan 7, 2027 |
| Safety and Security (UNDSS) | Data Analytics and Performance Measurement Intern | 3 to 6 months | Oct 14, 2026 |
| Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) | Intern, Humanitarian Affairs | February to July 2027 | Oct 20, 2026 |
| Global Communications | Intern, Public Information (2 positions) | 6 months | Oct 12, 2026 |
| Executive Office of the Secretary-General | Intern, Programme Management | 6 months | Oct 15, 2026 |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Current New York notices set out three academic routes, and 13 of the 16 print them in full:
• Academic status: enrolled in a graduate programme (master's or higher), enrolled in the final academic year of a bachelor's, or already graduated with a university degree. Earlier-year undergraduates aren't eligible.
• Proof: official written proof of enrollment or graduation from your university, attached in Inspira.
• Experience and field: no professional work experience is required, but your field of study must be closely related to the internship.
• Language and family: New York notices require fluency in English. A child or sibling of a UN staff member can't apply.

Do You Have to Apply Within a Year of Graduating?
Not under the current notices. Some UN pages and older guides still say applicants must have graduated within one year, a rule from the programme's earlier instrument. The live notices simply say "have graduated with a university degree", with no time limit, and the notice is what governs your application. Nationality isn't a gate in the notices we read, but visas are your responsibility and your cost.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship that gives you relevant work to cite in an Inspira application.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Research and analysis | 12 of 16 New York notices involve research; many name SDG-related topics | Arceh Children's Environmental Health Analytics |
| Data analysis and visualisation | UNDSS notice: KPI dashboards with Power BI, Excel, SQL, R or Python | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Programme management | Programme Management intern notices at OCT, DPPA-DPO and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General | Healthcare Operations Consulting |
Why does that help? UN notices require a closely related field, and a finished project in that field gives your application concrete evidence beyond coursework.
What Is the United Nations Application and Interview Process Like?
The process runs opening by opening:
1. Search UN Careers. Filter Category = Internship and, for Headquarters, Duty Station = New York.
2. Apply in Inspira. Submit a separate application for each opening, attach proof of enrollment or graduation, and tailor your answers to that notice's requirements.
3. Shortlist. If you're shortlisted, the hiring manager contacts you directly, usually for an interview.
4. Offer and arrangements. After you accept, you handle the visa, travel, insurance and housing yourself.
So read each notice's minimum and desirable requirements before you start writing. A Secretariat hiring manager on Reddit said candidates who meet all of them stand out.
What Students on Reddit Say
Most UN internship talk sits on r/UNpath, and cost comes up in nearly every thread.
A Secretariat hiring manager advised studying current openings, noting every minimum and desirable requirement, and making sure you meet the minimum before applying. Only relevant experience helps.
Asked how they paid for unpaid UN internships, former interns pointed to government youth stipends, university grants and Erasmus+, and some took on student loans. Others noted that separate UN agencies sometimes pay a modest stipend.
One applicant spent about two full days on each Inspira application, sent eight, and wasn't shortlisted. A commenter said finishing a first UN internship led to three shortlists afterward.
How Do You Stand Out for a UN Internship?
The UN doesn't publish applicant numbers or an acceptance rate, and there's no conversion programme to report. Three moves still help.
First, apply often and early. With two-week windows and openings every month, volume matters, so set up alerts and apply within days. Second, mirror the notice. List the tools it names (Power BI, SQL, Python for data roles) and match your degree to the field it requires, because a related field of study is mandatory.
Third, plan the money before you apply. The Secretariat pays nothing, and several notices allow remote or hybrid work, which can make an offer affordable. And look at UN agencies that pay a stipend, such as UNDP and UN Women, alongside the Secretariat.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 UN internship?
No, summer 2026 starts have passed, and the UN doesn't run a summer cohort anyway. You can apply now to 16 New York openings for starts from October 2026 to February 2027, most closing by October 20, 2026. Openings with summer 2027 start dates are expected from about February to May 2027.
When should I apply for a UN internship for summer 2027?
From about February to May 2027, opening by opening. The Secretariat has no single summer deadline: departments post internships all year, each open for roughly two weeks, with starts one to four months out. Check UN Careers weekly and apply within days of a matching opening.
Are UN internships paid?
No. UN Secretariat internships are unpaid, and 15 of the 16 New York notices say so directly. Interns or their sponsoring institutions cover travel, visas, housing and living costs. Some separate UN organizations, such as UNDP and UN Women, run their own programmes that may pay a stipend.
Who can apply for a UN Secretariat internship?
Students in the final year of a bachelor's degree, master's or PhD students, and people who have already graduated. No work experience is required, but your field of study must be closely related to the internship. Children and siblings of UN staff members can't apply, and earlier-year undergraduates aren't eligible.
Do I have to apply within a year of graduating?
Not under the current notices. Older guides and some UN pages mention a one-year limit, but the live notices accept anyone who has graduated with a university degree, with no time limit stated. The notice you're applying to is what governs, so read its eligibility section before applying.
How long is a UN internship?
Two to six months. Full-time interns work five days and 35 hours a week under a staff supervisor, and some notices allow part-time, hybrid or fully remote arrangements. Duration and start date are set per opening, so check the expected duration field on each notice before you apply.
Do I need a visa for a UN internship in New York?
If you aren't a US citizen or resident, you'll need the right visa, and you arrange it yourself. The notices say visas, travel, accommodation and living expenses fall on the intern or a sponsoring institution. Remote-eligible openings can avoid the move, so filter for them if cost is a concern.
Can a UN internship lead to a UN job?
It can help, but there's no conversion programme or published rate. Seven of the 67 live notices still say interns can't apply for Professional-level Secretariat posts for six months after the internship. Community reports suggest prior UN experience helps with later shortlists, so it's a foot in the door, not a guarantee.
UN openings move every week, and the summer 2027 ones are months away. Apply to what fits now, then use the time before February to finish a remote Externship you can cite in your next Inspira application.
