Last updated: October 2026
The Peace Corps doesn't run one internship; it runs three routes with three different employers and rules, and the agency's own paid program has no open posting today. On USAJOBS the agency last posted student internships for Summer 2025, in the window of 6 to 20 January 2025, and no student announcement has appeared in the agency's USAJOBS record since. The two routes that are open are unpaid: the Peace Corps Office of Inspector General takes applications against soft deadlines of 15 October, 15 March and 15 June, and the independent National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) closes Spring 2027 on 10 November 2026 and Summer 2027 on 1 March 2027. In plain words: for summer 2027 you apply by 1 March (NPCA) or 15 March 2027 (OIG), and you intern in summer 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. What Is a Peace Corps Internship?
A Peace Corps internship is a student placement at the U.S. Peace Corps, the federal agency created under the Peace Corps Act of 1961, or at one of two separate organizations that use the name. The agency's own Student Internship Program is governed by an internal policy effective 6 May 2025 and places interns in headquarters offices in Washington, DC. The Office of Inspector General runs its own unpaid Legal, Evaluation, Audit and Management and Administration internships. The National Peace Corps Association is an independent alumni nonprofit with its own unpaid internships. None of these is the same as serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer, which lasts 2 years and 3 months.

When Do Peace Corps Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The agency's student postings were short and ran on a steady rhythm until January 2025. Summer internships posted on 24 January 2023 (31 days), 29 January 2024 (13 days) and 6 January 2025 (14 days), and the spring cohorts posted in July or August: 12 July 2023 and 1 August 2024. That put the summer posting about 5 months before a June start. After the January 2025 summer announcements, the agency's USAJOBS record shows no student announcement at all, so a January 2027 posting is possible but not promised. OIG and NPCA publish their deadlines instead.
The agency has no open student announcement. OIG's spring soft deadline of 15 October has just passed, though it's a soft date. NPCA Spring 2027 is open, with a fixed deadline on 10 November 2026.
NPCA Spring 2027 applications close. NPCA internships are unpaid, require academic credit and are separate from the U.S. agency. Spring 2027 interns must be based in the Washington, DC area.
Possible: a USAJOBS posting for agency summer 2027 internships, if the program returns. It would follow the January 2023, 2024 and 2025 pattern, but no student announcement has posted since January 2025. If one posts, expect a window of about two weeks and an application cap.
NPCA Summer 2027 applications close on 1 March 2027. The OIG summer soft deadline is 15 March 2027, and OIG Legal asks for a writing sample with the cover letter and resume.
Summer internships run. The OIG fall soft deadline is 15 June 2027 and the NPCA Fall 2027 deadline is 1 August 2027; NPCA lists remote options for Fall 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Each route runs differently. The agency's USAJOBS windows were 13 to 31 days, and the Spring 2025 announcement carried a 150-application cap, so a posting can end early. NPCA lists fixed deadlines you shouldn't expect to bend. OIG calls its dates soft deadlines, which means a late email might be considered, but nothing on its page promises that, so treat them as real. Set a USAJOBS saved search for the Peace Corps now so a posting doesn't pass you by.
Which Peace Corps Internship Programs Should You Target?
Keep the three routes separate, because they differ in employer, pay and calendar. Volunteer service isn't an internship, and we don't cover it here.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peace Corps Student Internship Program (agency, paid by default) | General administration, communications and policy, finance and budget, human resources; headquarters offices in Washington, DC | Up to one year, full or part time | Writing, research, accounting support |
| OIG Legal Intern Program (unpaid) | Legal research and support for law students with at least two semesters completed | 12 weeks fall and spring; 10 weeks summer | Legal research, writing sample |
| OIG Evaluation internship (unpaid) | Evaluation work for currently enrolled master's students | 10 weeks, 20 hours a week | Research, report editing |
| OIG Audit internship (unpaid) | Audit support, ideally for accounting or finance students | 10 weeks, 20 hours a week | Microsoft Office, accounting |
| OIG Management and Administration internship (unpaid) | Administrative and communications support for college or graduate students | 10 weeks, 20 hours a week | Office tools, Adobe, writing |
| NPCA internships (unpaid, independent nonprofit) | Advocacy, communications and program management roles for 2027 | At least three months | Canva, social media, writing |
Details sit on the OIG internships page, the NPCA internships page and the agency's jobs page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Eligibility differs by route and comes from the agency's last announcement, the OIG page and the NPCA page.
• Citizenship: the agency and OIG require U.S. citizenship. NPCA says interns must be based in the United States and doesn't state a citizenship rule.
• Agency enrollment: currently enrolled or accepted at least half time at a U.S.-accredited institution. The Spring 2025 announcement graded interns by study: FP-09 for bachelor's study, FP-07 for a year of graduate study or Superior Academic Achievement, FP-05 for two years of graduate study or a master's.
• OIG tracks: Legal wants law students with at least two semesters; Evaluation wants currently enrolled master's students; Audit wants college students, ideally in accounting or finance.
• NPCA: you must receive academic credit through your school or another formal internship program.
• Background check: the agency's policy says a federal background investigation must clear before an appointment is issued; the Spring 2025 announcement listed Moderate Risk, with no clearance required.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
The Spring 2025 agency announcement listed a minimum 3.0 GPA, and a Summer 2023 announcement carried the same line. The agency hasn't posted a student announcement since, so check any new posting. We found no GPA rule on the OIG or NPCA pages.
What Skills Does the Peace Corps Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The routes are small and the skills are practical. Written communication shows up in four of the five documents we read: press releases, newsletters and report editing. Research and analysis covers policy, data and legal work, and financial and accounting support appears in the agency and OIG Audit descriptions. Design tools matter at OIG Management and Administration and at NPCA, where Canva is required.

Method: count of skills named in five documents: the Spring 2025 and Summer 2023 agency announcements, the OIG internships page, the NPCA internships page and the agency's internship policy. No Peace Corps student posting was open on 16 October 2026, so this isn't a count of live job descriptions.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row ties a duty named in the Peace Corps routes to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project for your cover letter.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Policy research and data work | Agency announcement: researching policy and media coverage; OIG Evaluation and Legal research | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics |
| Communications and outreach | Agency announcement: drafting press releases and newsletter stories; NPCA social media content | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
| Public health data | Agency announcement fields included medical and public health in 2023 | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Budget and financial analysis | Agency announcement: financial management, accounting and budget; OIG Audit | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
None of these Externships is connected to the Peace Corps. They give you a specific project to describe in a cover letter or a USAJOBS questionnaire.
What Is the Peace Corps Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the agency's policy, the OIG page and the NPCA page.
1. Pick your route first. The agency (paid by default, USAJOBS), OIG (unpaid, email) and NPCA (unpaid, school credit) have different calendars.
2. Agency route. When an announcement posts on USAJOBS, apply with a resume, a transcript and questionnaire answers. An unofficial transcript was accepted at application, with an official one required on selection.
3. OIG route. Email the Internship Program Coordinator a cover letter and resume. Legal applicants add a writing sample.
4. NPCA route. Use the online application linked from the NPCA internships page before the term deadline.
5. Clear the background check. The agency issues no offer or start date until its investigation clears.
If your school doesn't allow paid internships for credit, the agency's policy allows an unpaid appointment, so ask its human resources office.
What Students on Reddit Say
We found one readable first-hand thread, and it describes the agency before its current policy, so read it as background:
A returned volunteer who had worked at headquarters (describing about three years earlier than January 2021) said each office director ran its own internship program with no agency-wide timeline. Offices leaned on referrals from staff, past interns and nearby universities, and the work ranged from statistical projects to general administration.
How Do You Stand Out for a Peace Corps Internship?
First, choose the right route: apply to NPCA or OIG now, and keep a saved USAJOBS search for the agency. Second, match your writing to the duties: the agency announcements and OIG pages emphasize press releases, reports and research, so bring a clean writing sample and a resume with quantified results. Third, line up academic credit early if you apply to NPCA, since it's required. No route publishes applicant counts, acceptance rates or a conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Peace Corps internship?
No. The agency's USAJOBS record shows no student announcement since Summer 2025 postings closed on 20 January 2025, so there is no summer 2026 window to apply to. For 2027, the open doors are NPCA Spring 2027 (10 November 2026) and the OIG and NPCA summer deadlines in March 2027.
Are Peace Corps internships paid?
The agency's Student Internship Program is paid by default under the Foreign Personnel pay plan; the Spring 2025 announcement listed $33,878 to $77,895 a year across FP-5 to FP-9. OIG internships and NPCA internships are unpaid, and NPCA requires academic credit.
When do Peace Corps internship applications open for summer 2027?
The agency has no published date. Its summer postings ran in January 2023, 2024 and 2025, but none has posted since. OIG's summer soft deadline is 15 March 2027 and NPCA's Summer 2027 deadline is 1 March 2027, so those are the dates you can plan around.
Who can apply to a Peace Corps internship?
The agency and OIG require U.S. citizenship and current enrollment. The last agency announcement asked for at least half-time enrollment and a 3.0 GPA. OIG Legal wants law students, and NPCA requires school credit and U.S.-based interns. Check each posting, since rules differ by route.
Where are Peace Corps internships located?
The agency and OIG internships are in Washington, DC, and the agency posting was not remote, though telework was allowed under agency policy. NPCA places interns in the DC area, with some Summer 2027 roles in San Diego and remote options listed for Fall 2027. Overseas posts don't take student interns through these routes.
Is a Peace Corps internship the same as being a Volunteer?
No. Volunteer service is a different program: Peace Corps Volunteer service lasts 2 years and 3 months, Peace Corps Response up to 12 months and the Virtual Service Pilot 3 to 6 months. The internships in this guide are short student placements in Washington, DC, or with NPCA.
What is the difference between NPCA and the Peace Corps?
The National Peace Corps Association is an independent alumni nonprofit, not part of the U.S. agency. It runs its own unpaid internships with deadlines of 10 November, 1 March and 1 August and requires academic credit. The agency and its Inspector General office run separate programs.
Is there a GPA minimum for the Peace Corps agency internship?
The last agency announcement, for Spring 2025, required a minimum 3.0 GPA, and the Summer 2023 announcement said the same. The agency hasn't posted a student announcement since, so confirm the figure in any new posting. We found no GPA line on the OIG or NPCA pages.
The open deadlines are 10 November 2026 for NPCA and March 2027 for summer, so start the cover letter now. Set a USAJOBS alert for the agency too, and if you want a finished project to write about, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
