Cummins publishes its intern pay right in the job posting, something most Fortune 500 manufacturers don't do. For summer 2026, technical interns were listed at $3,900–$5,000 a month at bachelor's level, $6,000 at master's and $7,300 at PhD, at a $33.7 billion, ~67,400-employee power-systems manufacturer headquartered in Columbus, Indiana. But here's the timing fact that matters more: Cummins is a late-window employer. Its summer-2026 requisitions didn't appear until December 2025, and function-specific postings kept appearing through March 2026, a 3.5-month spread. On August 15, 2026, Cummins' own student careers board read "No Jobs currently found. Please check back later."
And summer 2027 applications are expected around December 2026.

What Is a Cummins Internship?
A Cummins internship is a paid, 10-to-12-week, 40-hour-a-week placement at a Fortune 500 power-systems manufacturer that builds diesel and natural-gas engines, hydrogen fuel-cell systems under its Accelera brand, and backup power for data centers. Cummins also runs 4-to-12-month co-ops and part-time School to Work tracks.
But the summer internship is the primary entry point and what this page covers. One watch-out: several requisitions titled "Summer Internship Positions" actually carry the co-op duration in the criteria block.
So read the duration bullet, not the title. Glassdoor rates Cummins 4.0 out of 5 across 7,077 reviews, with 85% CEO approval for Jennifer Rumsey.

When Do Cummins Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Cummins doesn't open applications the way most Fortune 500 employers do. Its summer-2026 internship requisitions didn't appear until December 2025, and function-specific postings kept trickling out through March 2026, a 3.5-month spread with each requisition living about 30 to 60 days. On August 15, 2026, the student careers board read "No Jobs currently found."
So when should you expect to apply? Around December 2026, roughly six months before a May or June 2027 start, not the 9 to 12 months most engineering peers give you.
Cummins' student board reads "No Jobs currently found. Please check back later." The Oracle API shows 964 open reqs worldwide, 455 US, and zero US summer-internship or co-op reqs. The one intern-titled US req is an internal conversion placeholder. Applications for summer 2027 are expected roughly four months out. This is the window to build proof and to join the Talent Community so alerts fire in December.
Pick a function, not "Cummins." The reqs are Product Engineering, Electronic Systems, Integrated Supply Chain, Finance, IT, Marketing, and more, and they are separate applications. Get CREO, GD&T, or Six Sigma project work on the resume. Join the Cummins Talent Community. Practice a HireVue recorded behavioral round.
Applications for summer 2027 are expected to open here, projected from Product Engineering posting 5 December 2025 for the summer 2026 cycle. Individual requisitions lived only about 30 to 60 days last cycle. Apply your function's req in week one.
Function reqs keep appearing on staggered dates. The 2026 cycle ran 5 Dec through 23 Mar. Co-op reqs post inside this same window. Reqs close unannounced. If your function hasn't posted by February, it hasn't been missed yet.
10 to 12 weeks, 40 hours a week, paid monthly per Cummins' published band. No relocation package. At the end, the internal conversion process decides who moves to a next assignment, headcount permitting.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Cummins publishes no deadline in any of its requisitions, and its postings aren't continuously open either. Last cycle, Product Systems Validation posted January 14 and was off the board by about February 16. That's 33 days. Finance and Electronic Systems both posted January 14 and lasted until about March 16, roughly 61 days. Structural, Dynamic & Acoustic Systems had an external mirror's apply-by of about 32 days after posting.
So there's no single "Cummins internship deadline." There are a dozen function-specific windows, none announced, each lasting about a month. Miss yours? You're waiting a full year.
Which Cummins Internship Programs Should You Target?
Cummins doesn't run a handful of named programs. It posts function-specific requisitions, each its own application.
And the engineering tracks alone span more than a dozen sub-disciplines.
| Program / Track | Focus | Duration | Key Skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product Engineering (intern + co-op) | Component and subsystem design decisions; Value Package Introduction (VPI) issue investigation; Design Review packages | 10–12 wks or 4–12 mo co-op | iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, ANSYS Workbench; Product Failure Mode Avoidance |
| Electronic Systems | Electronic hardware, controls software and support tools; diagnostics and specification development | 10–12 wks | System Requirements Engineering; Product Problem Solving; Product Verification and Validation |
| Product Systems Validation | Test verification and validation plans; prototype build plans; lab testing | 10–12 wks | FMEA, 7-step problem solving, process hazard analysis; Product Failure Mode Avoidance |
| Structural, Dynamic & Acoustic Systems | Stress, strain, fatigue, noise and vibration modeling and test | 10–12 wks | ANSYS, FE-Safe, GT, AVL; FEA; NVH testing |
| Integrated Supply Chain (mfg / quality / logistics) | Continuous-improvement quality activities; defect reduction; supply planning | 10–12 wks | Six Sigma; Analytical Thinking; Customer Focus |
| Business tracks: Finance, IT, Marketing, HR, General Management | Cost-variance analysis and root cause (Finance); solution fit and validation testing (IT); VPI project teams as observer (Marketing) | 10–12 wks | Communicates Effectively; Decision Quality; Plans and Aligns; Tech Savvy |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Cummins' posted criteria are unusually clear but carry a residency clause that tightened in 2026:
• Enrollment: full-time enrolled, undergrad or grad, at an accredited US college or university.
• GPA: "Minimum 2.5 or above GPA preferred" in 14 of 16 requisitions reviewed; two drop the "preferred" qualifier. School to Work has no GPA requirement at all.
• Residency: "Must be currently residing within the continental U.S." This clause and the US-college requirement both appeared new in the 2026-cycle blocks, a documented tightening from 2025.
• Work authorization: every requisition carries E-Verify boilerplate only. Cummins publishes no statement on sponsoring or not sponsoring intern visas.
• Relocation: "Relocation Package: No" on all 16 requisitions reviewed. Cummins pays well per month and doesn't cover relocation.

Is Cummins' 2.5 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
No. Cummins writes "preferred" rather than "required" in 14 of 16 requisitions, and the floor is 2.5, unusually low for an engineering employer.
So what actually filters you out? The residency and full-time-enrollment clause, and the fact that your specific function's requisition is only on the board for about a month.
What Skills Does Cummins Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Sixteen Cummins function-specific intern and co-op job descriptions, covering 2026 and 2025 cycles, repeat one profile built around an internal competency library. Communicates Effectively appears in 9 of 16. Decision Quality in 8. But the competency names tell only part of the story. The engineering reqs name concrete tools in their prose: iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO and ANSYS Workbench in Product Engineering; ANSYS, FE-Safe, GT and AVL in SDAS; Six Sigma in Integrated Supply Chain.
And what's absent from every one of the 16 JDs? SolidWorks, MATLAB, Python, SQL and C/C++. Cummins is a CREO shop. Saying so correctly is a differentiator against every competitor page.
What Cummins looks for in interns
Skills across 16 Cummins intern & analyst job descriptions · 2026 and 2025-cycle official postings, projecting 2027–2028
Method: full-text analysis of 16 Cummins function-specific intern and co-op job descriptions from the 2026 and 2025 recruiting cycles, read in full and projected forward to 2027. Cummins had zero live US summer-internship or co-op requisitions on 15 August 2026, before its summer-2027 wave opened. Competency-library caveat: Cummins' requirement bullets are titles drawn from an internal competency library rather than free-text skill asks, so process and behavioral competencies dominate the top of this chart by construction; named tools appear only in the prose of engineering requisitions. Function-mix caveat: 9 of the 16 requisitions are engineering roles, so the design and validation competencies are weighted toward engineering rather than the full intern class.
How Is Demand for Mechanical Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern hiring right now: September 2026
Across US mechanical engineering intern postings tracked this month · aggregate market data, all employers
September 2026 is the fall recruiting wave: mechanical engineering intern postings jumped 190.1% from August, and 47.3% of new listings already carry Summer 2027 in the title. Seats fill on rolling review, so the applications that go in this month meet the widest pool of open roles.
Method: aggregate analysis of US mechanical engineering intern postings on Adzuna's US index, August average versus September 2026 to date (3 collection days). Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Extern has no CREO or FEA externship in the active catalog, and this page won't pretend otherwise.
But these build the adjacent evidence Cummins' requisitions reward: documented project work, cross-functional problem solving, and test-data discipline.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Supply chain, operations & Six Sigma | ISC JD: "leads or participates in Six Sigma projects"; "facilitates continuous improvement quality activities" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy |
| Industrial cybersecurity & IoT | IT JD: "Cyber Security" listed among accepted majors; live School-to-Work req asks for cybersecurity students | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Data analysis & reporting accuracy | Multiple JDs: "Deliver Actionable Data to Engineers"; "accurate data collection and delivery" | Beats by Dre Data Analytics |
Each of these ends in a finished deliverable, the kind of artifact Cummins' behavioral HireVue round can't replicate and a resume can point at.
What Is the Cummins Application and Interview Process Like?
Cummins' funnel starts with function selection, not a general application:
1. Pick a function and watch its req. Cummins posts separate requisitions per function — Product Engineering, Electronic Systems, Finance, IT, and so on. There is no umbrella application. Check the duration bullet, not the title: several reqs titled "Summer Internship" carry the co-op duration.
2. Apply through Cummins' Oracle candidate portal. Upload a resume. Join the Talent Community so alerts fire the day your function's req appears.
3. HireVue recorded assessment. Students on Reddit describe it as mostly behavioral: why you want to work at Cummins, not a coding test. A second thread on r/leetcode confirms the behavioral format.
4. Interview with the hiring team. Community reports describe standard behavioral and technical rounds. Glassdoor reports a 75% positive interview experience and an average difficulty of 2.8 out of 5 across all Cummins roles.
5. Offer, with pay stated as a monthly figure per Cummins' published band, and no relocation package.
And the full application opens at earlycareers.cummins.jobs, which currently reads "No Jobs currently found." Join the Talent Community and check back around December 2026.
What Students on Reddit Say
Three threads, from the inside.
The HireVue was just basic questions, like why do you want to work at Cummins, nothing technical. Not the grilling people expect.
Got offered a co-op for this summer and fall as a product development engineer. So the co-ops definitely run longer than one term.
Purdue students coordinating Cummins co-op housing in Columbus. The practical side of an Indiana assignment with no relocation package.
How Do You Stand Out When Each Window Is Only a Month Wide?
Three moves, starting with the calendar. Join the Talent Community now so you get an alert the day your function's requisition appears. Why? Because it'll be gone in 30 to 60 days and Cummins won't tell you when. Second, speak Cummins' own vocabulary. The Product Engineering req names iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO and ANSYS Workbench outright. Integrated Supply Chain names Six Sigma. Product Systems Validation names FMEA and 7-step problem solving. And a resume built on those exact terms reads as an insider.
Third, solve the Columbus problem before the recruiter raises it. The intern reqs are overwhelmingly at the Columbus, Indiana headquarters, and every one says Relocation Package: No.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
Cummins' peers are the industrial machinery and heavy equipment circuit, where calendars and program shapes vary widely.
- Caterpillarclosest analogue — Illinois-based heavy machinery, larger intern class, earlier autumn recruiting windowGuide →
- John Deereag and construction equipment, Iowa/Illinois-centered, runs co-ops on the same 4–12-month shapeGuide →
- Eatonpower management and electrical rather than engines, broader spread of US intern sitesGuide →
- Parker Hannifinmotion and control components, Ohio-based; a components-supplier view of the same powertrain marketGuide →
- Emerson Electricautomation and process control, Missouri-based; the strongest fit for controls and software-leaning studentsGuide →

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Cummins internship?
No. Cummins' summer-2026 requisitions posted between December 2025 and March 2026 and were off the board by spring; that class started in May or June 2026. On August 15, 2026, Cummins' student careers board read "No Jobs currently found." The next open cycle is summer 2027, expected to start posting around December 2026.
When do Cummins internship applications open for summer 2027?
Expected around December 2026, with function-specific requisitions continuing to appear through about March 2027. That projects the documented 2026 cycle, whose first requisition posted 5 December 2025 and whose last posted 23 March 2026. Cummins is later than most engineering employers, so don't panic in the autumn.
Are Cummins internships rolling?
No. Cummins publishes no deadline in any requisition, but its postings aren't continuously open either. Each function's requisition appeared, stayed live roughly 30 to 60 days, and disappeared without notice. There's no single Cummins deadline, only a dozen unannounced function-specific windows. Apply the week yours appears.
What GPA does Cummins require for an internship?
A 2.5 cumulative GPA, worded as "preferred" rather than required in 14 of the 16 requisitions reviewed. That's an unusually low floor for an engineering employer. The stricter gates are Cummins' requirements that you be enrolled full-time at a US college and currently residing in the continental United States.
How much do Cummins interns get paid?
Cummins publishes the range in the posting itself. For 2026, technical interns were listed at $3,900 to $5,000 a month at bachelor's level, $6,000 at master's and $7,300 at PhD; non-technical tracks ran $3,500 to $4,400 at bachelor's. That's roughly $22.50 to $28.85 an hour. Relocation isn't covered.
What is the difference between a Cummins internship and a co-op?
Length, mainly. Cummins' internship criteria specify 10 to 12 weeks; its co-op criteria specify four to six months and up to twelve. Both are 40 hours a week with the same 2.5 GPA preference. Watch out: several requisitions titled "Summer Internship" actually carry the co-op duration, so read the duration bullet rather than the title.
What is the Cummins intern interview process like?
It typically starts with a recorded HireVue assessment, which students on Reddit describe as mostly behavioral rather than a coding test, followed by interviews with the hiring team. Glassdoor reports a 75% positive interview experience and an average difficulty of 2.8 out of 5 across all Cummins roles.
Where are Cummins internships located?
Overwhelmingly at Cummins' Columbus, Indiana headquarters, which held 97 of the company's 455 live US requisitions in August 2026. Cummins runs plants across Tennessee, the Carolinas, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and beyond. But its documented intern requisitions concentrate in Columbus. No relocation package.
The student board says "No Jobs currently found" right now, and that's expected. Cummins won't post summer 2027 requisitions until around December 2026, and each one will be on the board for about a month.
So start now: sign up for the Talent Community, build proof with a remote Externship, and apply the week your function's req appears.
