What Is an Argonne National Laboratory Internship?
An Argonne National Laboratory internship is a paid, full-time research placement at a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. Argonne was chartered on 1 July 1946 as the first national laboratory in the U.S. and is operated by UChicago Argonne, LLC. Students join a staff scientist's project, plan their research in week one, complete mandatory safety classes and finish with a poster presentation. Students reach Argonne through three routes: Argonne's own Seasonal Internship Program, the DOE-wide SULI for undergraduates and CCI for community college students. A few business-function program internships also exist.

When Do Argonne National Laboratory Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Argonne runs three terms a year with separate deadlines. The Seasonal Internship Program closed on 13 June 2025 for fall 2025, and its summer 2026 window ran from 23 October 2025 to 6 February 2026 (from archived copies of the program page). The DOE-wide SULI and CCI summer 2026 window ran from 23 October 2025 to 7 January 2026, and for 2027 it opened on 14 October and closes on 6 January. That's about 4 to 5 months from deadline to start. The summer 2027 SIP dates below are projections from one prior cycle.
Spring 2027 SIP is open until Friday 30 October 2026 at 11:59 PM Central, with a general application and a Critical Minerals & Materials application. SULI and CCI for summer 2027 are open too.
Summer 2027 SIP applications are expected to post in this window, based on the 23 October 2025 to 6 February 2026 cycle. Argonne hasn't announced dates.
SULI and CCI for summer 2027 are due at 4:00 PM Central (5:00 PM Eastern), with transcripts and recommendation letters. DOE holds an application workshop on 4 November and a virtual internship fair on 12 November.
DOE says SULI offers begin around 3 February and finish around 14 April 2027, and that all offers depend on funding for the DOE program. These dates are tentative.
SULI and CCI summer interns work 10 weeks onsite in Lemont and present their results. Argonne publishes no return-offer rate.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
These are hard deadlines. The Argonne page says "late submissions will not be accepted," and DOE gives a fixed due time for SULI. Don't wait for the last day, because SULI needs transcripts and recommendation letters, and DOE tells recommenders to attend its office hours on 2, 9 and 16 December. If you want a spring placement, you have until 30 October. Watch the Argonne SIP page from late October for the summer 2027 posting.
Which Argonne National Laboratory Internship Programs Should You Target?
Argonne's student options differ in who runs them, how long they last and who can apply.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seasonal Internship Program (SIP) | Argonne's own research internship; apply through a Workday general application pool | Spring, summer and fall terms | Research planning, lab or analysis skills, poster presentation |
| SULI (DOE-wide) | Research with a lab scientist; the national application lists Argonne as a lab choice | 10 weeks summer; 16 weeks spring or fall | Research report, presentation, peer review |
| Community College Internship (CCI) | Technical training on technology, instrumentation or major research facilities | 10 weeks | Hands-on technical work, poster, 6 to 8 page report |
| Procurement, Financial Management and Business Systems program internships | Business-function internships on the student board; no windows stated | Not stated | Excel, Workday, analysis, communication |
| Lee Teng Undergraduate Fellowship | Accelerator science | Not stated here | Physics and accelerator coursework |
Details sit on the Argonne undergraduate programs page. SIP and SULI are separate applications; the SIP page doesn't mention SULI, so check both pages before you apply to each. Graduate-only research aide roles are listed on the same board but aren't open to undergraduates.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Rules come from Argonne's SIP page and the DOE SULI eligibility page.
• Enrollment: SIP takes students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate study, or a graduate of the past 3 months. SULI needs full-time enrollment (or a degree within 2 years), one semester as a matriculated student, and 6 STEM and 12 total credits by the deadline.
• GPA: 3.0 cumulative on a 4.0 scale.
• Citizenship: U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident at application. Permanent residents should contact the lab early, because offers depend on site access approval. The procurement program internship is U.S. citizens only.
• Age and location: 18 or older when the appointment starts, and the whole appointment is in the United States, onsite.
• Screening: pre-employment drug testing may apply, and applicants disclose any foreign government sponsored activities under DOE Order 486.1A.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
Argonne and DOE state it as a requirement, with no stated exceptions. Treat it as a gate for eligibility, then compete on the rest of the file. For SULI, reviewers see your transcript, essay and recommendations, and the DOE application is the same one other labs read. Argonne publishes no acceptance rate.
What Skills Does Argonne National Laboratory Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Argonne posts no list of required skills for the research terms, which draw from an applicant pool that supervisors review. The seven undergraduate-eligible postings on its student board show what is asked: communication (written and oral), Microsoft Office or Excel and Workday for the business internships, and safety training and a poster presentation for the research terms. Four of seven stress working to competing deadlines.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row links a skill from Argonne's postings to a remote Externship that gives you a project to describe.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis and spreadsheets | Business Systems Administration: "aggregate and analyze data"; Financial Management: "Microsoft Excel to conduct real-world cost analysis" | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship |
| Document and data extraction | Procurement Services: contract administration software and purchase-order records | Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights Externship |
| Systems and risk awareness | Business Systems Administration: system maintenance and implementation initiatives | vCISO Cybersecurity Risk Assessment Externship |
| Finance and budgeting | Financial Management: "financial reconciliation" and audit support | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship |
None of these Externships is connected to Argonne. They give you a finished project, which helps when the application asks what you have already done.
What Is the Argonne National Laboratory Application and Interview Process Like?
The process differs between SIP and SULI.
1. Pick the term and route. SIP spring 2027 closes 30 October; SULI and CCI for summer close 6 January. Check the GPA and citizenship rules first.
2. Apply. SIP uses a Workday general application. SULI and CCI use the DOE portal, with transcripts, essays and recommendation letters, and you rank labs.
3. Matching. Supervisors draw from the pool. Community accounts describe a researcher emailing a project description, then a short interview, then an emailed offer.
4. Offer and screening. SULI offers run from about 3 February to 14 April 2027. Expect a background check and a drug test before you arrive.
Argonne's SIP page says the first week is a research plan with your supervisor plus mandatory safety classes.
What Students on Reddit Say
Past participants on r/REU describe the housing and the matching process.
A summer 2025 CCI participant said no research experience beyond coursework and jobs was needed. They put the Guest House at about $300 a week, mostly covered by the $250 allowance, and described four-person quads with a shared kitchen.
A past Argonne SULI participant said summer interns live in the Guest House, the 10 weeks run roughly early June to early August, and a drug test and background check come before arrival. Their offer came by email on the Monday after a Friday interview.
In a DOE-wide SULI thread, applicants said offers from different labs arrived from late January to March, some emailed scientists directly and got offers, and one Argonne applicant was still pending in mid-March.
How Do You Stand Out for an Argonne Internship?
First, apply to both routes when the dates allow, since SIP and SULI are separate applications. Second, make your essay and recommendations concrete: SULI recommenders are asked to attend DOE office hours, and community accounts say missing letters or unredacted transcripts can drop an applicant from the pool. Third, if you are a business major, look at the procurement, financial management and business systems internships instead of only research roles. Argonne doesn't publish class size, acceptance rate or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Argonne internship?
No. The summer 2026 Seasonal Internship window closed on 6 February 2026, and SULI and CCI closed on 7 January 2026. Open now: Spring 2027 SIP, due 30 October 2026, and SULI and CCI for summer 2027, due 6 January 2027. Argonne's summer 2027 SIP application hasn't posted.
When is the Argonne summer 2027 internship deadline?
SULI and CCI for summer 2027 are due 6 January 2027 at 4:00 PM Central. Argonne's own Seasonal Internship Program hasn't posted its summer window. Last cycle it opened 23 October 2025 and closed 6 February 2026, so expect something similar, but check the program page.
How much does Argonne pay interns?
Argonne's SIP, SULI and CCI pages state a stipend of $650 per week plus a $250 per week housing allowance. A 10-week summer therefore pays $6,500 in stipend. Wide hourly ranges on Argonne's business-program postings are general guidelines, so don't treat them as an intern wage.
What is the difference between SIP and SULI?
SIP is Argonne's own Seasonal Internship Program, applied for through Argonne's Workday student site. SULI is the DOE-wide program run by the Office of Science, applied for on the DOE portal with national deadlines. You pick Argonne as a lab choice. They are separate applications.
Who is eligible to apply?
Enrolled students, or SIP graduates within 3 months, who are 18 or older with a cumulative 3.0 GPA. You must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident at application. Argonne appointments are onsite in the United States, and SULI has no remote option.
Does Argonne provide housing?
On-site residence-hall style lodging is available for students who live over twenty miles from the lab, and the $250 weekly housing allowance applies. The Guest House is managed by Sodexo and takes a $100 card authorization that's refunded after checkout. Community accounts put the cost near $300 a week.
Are there Argonne internships for business majors?
Yes. Argonne's student board lists Procurement Services, Financial Management and Business Systems Administration program internships. Postings say full-time enrollment, a 3.0 GPA and at least one semester completed. Listed majors include finance, accounting, supply chain and business analytics. These postings show no deadline, so confirm on the board.
Do Argonne internships lead to jobs?
Argonne doesn't publish a return-offer or conversion rate, and neither does DOE for SULI. The programs describe research experience and career development rather than a hiring pipeline. SULI offers are also contingent on funding for the DOE program, so treat any offer as subject to that condition.
Spring 2027 closes on 30 October 2026 and SULI follows on 6 January 2027. Pull your transcript and recommenders together now, and if you want a finished project to point to, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
