Last updated: October 2026
The USPTO's student announcements are shorter than a school week, and none is open today. In 2026 each of its five student postings on USAJOBS stayed open for seven days (13 to 20 March, 24 April to 1 May and 10 to 17 July), and on 16 October 2026 not one of the agency's 35 open announcements was a student job. The paid USPTO Intern Program that ran in March 2026 was a temporary appointment of up to 90 days starting in early June, and the unpaid Law Extern posting closes after 200 applications, whichever comes first. The agency publishes no fixed calendar, so for summer 2027 the plan is to set a USAJOBS alert now and watch from about November 2026 to April 2027. In plain words: you apply when a window posts, probably between late 2026 and spring 2027, and you intern in summer 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights Externship builds the document-analysis skills behind patent and trademark work, and the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you legal and policy research practice. What Is a USPTO Internship?
A USPTO internship is a student placement at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the federal agency that examines patents and registers trademarks, working with a unit such as Patents, Trademarks, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board or the General Counsel's office. The USPTO describes itself as an organization of more than 14,000 employees and offers programs to high school, college, graduate and law students. It sits inside the Department of Commerce. This guide keeps the routes separate under their official names: the paid USPTO Intern Program, the paid Law Internship, and the unpaid, volunteer USPTO Extern Program. The USPTO's Extern Program is a different thing from Extern.com's remote Externships.

When Do USPTO Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The USPTO has no fixed student calendar, so every 2027 date below is an expectation built from past postings. USAJOBS records show 12 student announcements in 2024, one in 2025 and five so far in 2026. Summer 2025 externs were posted on 25 November 2024, about six months before a June start. The summer 2026 Intern Program and Law Internship posted on 13 March and 24 April, about 1.4 to 2.7 months before an early-June start. The pattern moved a lot between years, so treat the months as low to medium confidence.
No student announcement is open. The USPTO lists 35 open jobs on USAJOBS, and none is an internship, externship or student trainee role. Set a saved USAJOBS search for the Patent and Trademark Office with the keywords Student Trainee, Extern and Law Intern, and have your resume, transcript and proof of enrollment ready.
Expected: Extern, Law Extern and law-intern postings. The summer 2025 Student Extern posted 25 November to 13 December 2024, and the Law Intern for the Office of Policy and International Affairs posted 9 to 20 December 2024. Reddit posters recall caps of 150 and 250 on 2024 extern postings.
Expected: the Intern Program and Law Internship for summer 2027. In 2026 they opened 13 March and 24 April for 7 days each. In 2024 the Trademark Law Internship opened 23 January. USPTO says to watch USAJOBS toward the beginning of the year for the Law Internship.
Expected: referral, interviews and selections. A 2026 law-intern applicant was referred on 6 April and commenters said roles were filled by mid-May. The USPTO says Law Internship selections are generally made in the spring and the program begins in early summer.
Summer 2027 programs start; the Intern Program runs up to 90 days. A Fall 2027 Law Extern posting is expected around July 2027, based on the 10 to 17 July 2026 window.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Treat each USPTO window as a short window. The 2026 postings each lasted seven days, and the Law Extern announcement "will close when we have received 200 applications which may be sooner than the closing date." Reddit posters in 2024 reported caps of about 150 and 250 on two extern postings. So an alert matters more than a calendar: apply on the first day, with your resume, transcript and proof of enrollment or an admission letter ready.
Which USPTO Internship Programs Should You Target?
The USPTO runs several student routes. Each is announced separately on USAJOBS, and pay differs by program.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPTO Intern Program (paid, Pathways) | One chosen office, from Patents and Trademarks to Finance, IT and Communications; senior-level sessions and hearings | Up to 90 days from early June | Research, statistics and reporting, spreadsheets, drafting |
| USPTO Law Internship (paid) | Work with attorneys in Patents, Trademarks, Policy and International Affairs, PTAB, TTAB or General Counsel | Up to 12 weeks in summer | Legal writing and analysis, IP interest |
| USPTO Extern Program (unpaid, volunteer) | Career-path learning, networking and leadership sessions for high school, college and law students | A summer or fall term | Varies by unit |
| Law Extern (unpaid, part-time) | Legal research and support, mostly from your home campus; Fall 2026 term was September to December | One term | Legal research, written and oral communication |
| Innovation Internship (Undergraduate Rising Junior) | Posted in 2024 and early 2025 under that title; we haven't read the announcements | Not read | Not read |
The USPTO's page also names a PTAB Law Clerk Program that we haven't covered. Program details sit on the USPTO student programs page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Rules below come from the March 2026 Intern Program and July 2026 Law Extern announcements; later postings may change them.
• Citizenship: "You must be a U.S. citizen or national." Selective Service registration applies where required.
• Intern Program enrollment: degree-seeking at a qualifying school, full or half time, at least 16, in good academic standing. GS-4 needs two full academic years of study or an associate's degree, and GS-5 needs four.
• Graduating students: Spring or Summer 2026 graduates weren't eligible unless accepted for enrollment in an additional degree.
• Law Extern: a currently enrolled law student (1L after one semester, 2L or 3L), half time or more, with a 2.75 GPA.
• Extern Program documents: typically a resume, transcript and proof of enrollment or an admission letter. The USPTO provides no lodging or accommodations.
• Screening: Public Trust, low risk, with a suitability background check; no clearance.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?
The Intern Program announcement says "generally" at least 2.5 for undergraduate programs and 3.0 for advanced degrees, so it reads as a guideline, not a published bright line. The Law Extern posting states 2.75 outright. We didn't read the Law Internship GPA rule. Reddit posters in 2024 called the extern program not overly competitive but said solid undergraduate and law GPAs mattered.
What Skills Does the USPTO Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The announcements are short on tool lists and long on duties. The Intern Program names research and analysis, statistics and reporting, drafting documents and reports, spreadsheets and charts, legal writing and analysis and IT project support. The Law Extern adds legal research, interpreting and analyzing issues, and oral and written communication. Interns pick one of 13 offices, so technical majors can aim at Patents and IT, and humanities and law students at Trademarks, TTAB, PTAB and Policy and International Affairs.
Note: Skill chart not shown: only two USPTO student announcements were open or posted in 2026 with full text we could read (the March Intern Program and the July Law Extern), so there isn't a sample large enough to count. The skills above are quoted from those announcements, read on 16 October 2026.
How Is Demand for Legal Interns Moving Right Now?

For USPTO applicants: federal internships post on USAJOBS rather than the employer boards behind this card, and on 16 October 2026 none of the USPTO's 35 open announcements was a student role.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row ties a USPTO duty to a remote Externship that gives you something concrete to describe in your application.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Reading technical documents | Intern Program: research and analysis; senior-level sessions on innovation and intellectual property | Pfizer Advanced AI-Powered Document Insights |
| Legal and policy research with data | Law Extern: "legal research" and interpreting and analyzing issues | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics |
| Financial analysis | Intern Program office choice includes the Chief Financial Officer; spreadsheets and charts | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
| Audience and brand research | Intern Program office choices include Public Engagement and the Chief Communications Officer | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
| IT and automation | Intern Program: IT project support and the Chief Information Officer office | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
None of these Externships is connected to the USPTO. They give you a finished project to describe in a resume that a hiring office reads.
What Is the USPTO Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the USPTO's applying page and the 2026 announcements.
1. Set the alert. Build a USAJOBS profile and a saved search for the Patent and Trademark Office with the keywords Student Trainee, Extern and Law Intern. The USPTO also posts on X and LinkedIn as @USPTOJobs.
2. Apply the day it posts. Windows have lasted seven days, and capped announcements close at the first 200 applications.
3. Send your documents. Typically a resume, transcript or transcripts, and proof of enrollment or an admission letter, plus anything the announcement adds.
4. Referral and selection. After the window closes, applications are referred to hiring offices. A 2026 law-intern applicant was referred on 6 April and was still waiting in mid-May.
5. Ask early. The USPTO invites questions at Recruitment@uspto.gov about upcoming windows.
Choose your office deliberately on the Intern Program form, since you pick one of 13.
What Students on Reddit Say
Applicants on Reddit mostly discuss timing and how competitive the extern programs are. Posts from 2019 and 2024 describe older cycles:
A 2L who applied to the summer 2026 legal internship was marked "referred" on 6 April and had heard nothing by mid-May. Commenters assumed about two positions had been filled after other students posted acceptances, and one pointed to extra postings in Texas, California and other offices.
A 2024 extern heard from a unit lead and was sent to HR for onboarding within about a week of the confirmation email. Posters recalled two extern postings with different caps, about 150 and 250, and said it wasn't overly competitive, though solid undergraduate and law GPAs mattered.
Past externs from 2011 to 2018 described working on assigned cases in a technology center, applying on USAJOBS and hearing months later with no interview, and said the office likes to hire former externs. One was hired after graduating and later became a primary examiner.
How Do You Stand Out for a USPTO Internship?
First, be ready on day one: with seven-day windows and application caps, a finished resume and transcript are your edge. Second, pick your office with a reason. Technical majors can tie coursework to Patents and IT, and law and humanities students to Trademarks, TTAB, PTAB or Policy. Third, treat externships as a route in: past externs say the office likes to hire them, though the USPTO publishes no applicant counts, acceptance rate or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 USPTO internship?
No. The summer 2026 Intern Program and Law Internship windows closed on 20 March and 1 May 2026, and the Fall 2026 Law Extern closed on 17 July. On 16 October 2026 none of the USPTO's 35 open announcements was a student role. Watch USAJOBS from November 2026 for summer 2027.
Does the USPTO have internships for students?
Yes. The USPTO runs the paid USPTO Intern Program, the paid Law Internship, and the unpaid, volunteer USPTO Extern Program, including a Law Extern version. All are announced on USAJOBS, and none was open on 16 October 2026. The agency says opportunities may not be available year-round.
Are USPTO internships paid?
The Intern Program and Law Internship are paid federal appointments. The March 2026 Intern Program announcement listed $41,659 to $60,593 a year, an annualized GS 4 to 5 range for an appointment of up to 90 days. The Extern Program is described as "unpaid, volunteer."
When do I apply for a summer 2027 USPTO internship?
There is no fixed calendar. Past student announcements ran in January, March and April for the internship and law internship, and in November and December for the summer extern, each open as little as seven days. Watch USAJOBS from November 2026 through April 2027 and set a saved search.
How long is a USPTO internship?
The March 2026 Intern Program announcement was a temporary appointment of up to 90 days starting in early June. The Law Internship lasts up to 12 weeks in summer, and the Fall 2026 Law Extern term ran September to December. Check each announcement, since lengths can change.
Who can apply to a USPTO internship?
U.S. citizens or nationals who are enrolled in school. The Intern Program asks for degree-seeking students in good standing, generally at a 2.5 undergraduate or 3.0 graduate GPA. The Law Extern requires law school enrollment and a 2.75 GPA. Final-year students need further enrollment for the Intern Program.
Can I do a USPTO internship remotely?
Partly. The Fall 2026 Law Extern was a hybrid remote and telework model, with most research from your home campus and occasional visits to Alexandria, Virginia. The March 2026 Intern Program announcement was based in Alexandria with telework marked "No," so confirm in each announcement.
Does a USPTO internship lead to a patent examiner job?
Examiner jobs are full-time and applied for separately; the USPTO lists a 10-week hiring timeline for patent examiners. Former externs on Reddit say the office likes to hire past externs, but the USPTO publishes no conversion rate, so treat it as an advantage, not a pipeline.
Nothing is open today, so the work now is the alert and the application materials. Set your USAJOBS search, and if you want a finished project to put on your resume, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
