The Department of Veterans Affairs trains about 124,000 health professions students and residents a year, yet its paid student jobs come in small, short bursts. On 3 October 2026, roughly 2,700 VA announcements were open in USAJOBS data and one was a student role: a Pathways Medical Technician Student Trainee in Ann Arbor, Michigan, paying $35,777 to $46,514 a year (GS-3, part time), open 30 September to 8 October 2026.

The VA has three student routes: paid Pathways internships that facilities post on their own schedules, VA-STEP (formerly VALOR) for nursing, lab-science and pharmacy students, and clinical training your school arranges. In plain words: for summer 2027, set a USAJOBS saved search now, and nursing juniors should watch for VA-STEP from December 2026.

Extern's Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern, unrelated to the VA's old VALOR nurse-extern program. Most run 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week. The Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship builds the health-system operations skills VA administrative trainees use, and the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship gives you hands-on health data work. What Is a Department of Veterans Affairs Internship?

A VA internship is a paid or credit-bearing student role at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which calls itself "the largest provider of health professions education and training" in the United States. It comes in three forms. Pathways interns are federal employees in "Student Trainee" jobs at a medical center or office. VA-STEP (VA Student Trainee Experience Program, formerly VALOR) pays nursing, medical lab science and pharmacy students for 400 hours of precepted clinical work. Clinical rotations for medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology and other students are arranged between your school and the VA. A VA psychology internship is a doctoral training year matched through APPIC, not a student job.

When Do Department of Veterans Affairs Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The VA doesn't run one annual wave. Pathways student-trainee announcements come from individual facilities in any month: about 67 VA student announcements opened in 2024, about 28 in 2025 during the federal hiring freeze, and about 31 from January to August 2026, by our count of USAJOBS historical data. VA-STEP clusters in winter. Facility deadlines in 2026 included 13 February (Hines), 17 March (Salt Lake City) and 27 April (Miami), and Puget Sound says its window usually runs December to mid-February.

December 2026 – March 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

VA-STEP applications for summer 2027 expected, with each facility setting its own deadline (2026 closes ranged from mid-February to late April). January to March was also the busiest stretch for VA Pathways postings in 2024.

April – June 2027EXPECTED

More Pathways announcements as facilities post them. In June 2026 VA Central Office posted unpaid summer internships in Washington, DC for about two weeks.

Summer 2027

VA-STEP students work their 400 hours, typically ten full-time weeks from June to August. Pathways interns can convert to a permanent job after 480 hours and finishing their degree.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Every VA student route has a short window. Pathways announcements close on a fixed date, often five to fourteen days after opening: the Ann Arbor posting runs nine days, Orlando's January 2026 student trainee two weeks, Gainesville's June 2026 one ten days. Some list a single opening.

VA-STEP closes on facility deadlines, and the national page says paper, scanned or emailed applications aren't accepted. Students who wait for a reminder usually find the announcement already closed, so a USAJOBS saved search with email alerts is the most important step on this page.

Which Department of Veterans Affairs Internship Programs Should You Target?

Match the route to your program; the VA uses the word "intern" for several things that aren't student jobs.

RouteWho it's forLengthPay
Pathways Internship (Student Trainee)Students enrolled at least half time, any levelTemporary appointment, e.g. 12 months part timeGS-3 to GS-4, about $35,800–$47,300/yr in recent VA postings

Not student jobs: "TCF Intern" career-trainee roles (GS-5/7, for graduates), RN residencies and post-licensure nurse "internships", and Pathways Recent Graduate jobs. Details: VA Pathways Internship Program.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Requirements differ sharply between the two paid routes:

• Enrollment: Pathways: accepted or enrolled at least half time in a qualifying program, from high school to graduate school. VA-STEP: accredited BSN, MLS or PharmD program, eligible to graduate by the following June.

• GPA: VA-STEP requires a cumulative 3.0 or higher; Oklahoma City adds no grade lower than a B in any nursing course. Pathways sets requirements per announcement.

• Citizenship: VA-STEP requires US citizenship. Pathways interns must be US citizens to convert to a permanent job.

• Clinical experience: VA-STEP applicants need at least one clinical experience in a hospital or medical center, plus current BLS.

• Service obligations: VA-STEP applicants can't owe service to another institution or hold a federal scholarship with a service obligation.

Does the VA Hire Pathways Interns After 2025?

Yes, but less often. Federal student hiring fell during the 2025 hiring freeze: VA student announcements dropped from about 67 in 2024 to about 28 in 2025, by our count of USAJOBS data, and some Pathways interns on Reddit reported terminations or paused conversions in early 2025. VA kept posting Pathways student trainee jobs in 2026, including the Ann Arbor role open now, so the route is active but irregular.

What Skills Does the Department of Veterans Affairs Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We read seven VA sources on 3 October 2026: the national VA-STEP page, the Oklahoma City VA-STEP page, a Salt Lake City VA-STEP announcement, the VA Pathways requirements page and three Pathways student trainee announcements (Ann Arbor, Orlando, Gainesville).

The VA asks more about documents and status than about skills. Enrollment appears in all seven sources and US citizenship in four. VA-STEP adds a 3.0 GPA, two recommendation letters, immunization and BLS records and at least one clinical experience. The administrative Pathways roles rate applicants on customer service, computer skills and accurate record work.

For a PharmD student, retail pharmacy intern jobs are plentiful year-round, while VA-STEP is the federal option with a winter deadline. Nursing and lab-science students have far fewer listed options, which makes VA-STEP worth planning for.

These cover the administrative and data side of Pathways. For VA-STEP, the clinical experience comes from your nursing, lab or pharmacy program.

What Is the Department of Veterans Affairs Application and Interview Process Like?

The two paid routes apply in different systems:

1. Pathways: build a USAJOBS profile and saved search. Filter to the Department of Veterans Affairs and the "Students" hiring path, and turn on email alerts. Searching "intern" on VA mostly returns Internal Medicine physician jobs.

2. Pathways: apply inside the window. Upload a federal-style resume (hours per week, dates, duties) and transcripts. A 2021 Reddit applicant described a second interview with a service director; your resume becomes part of your federal personnel file.

3. Pathways: onboarding. Sign a Participant Agreement and complete orientation within 10 days; keep your supervisor informed of enrollment and grades.

4. VA-STEP: apply through the Application Management System. Create one profile with two email addresses, upload the application, two letters, resume, transcript and DD214 if you served, and submit before the facility deadline.

5. Clinical rotations: ask your school. Placements run through your program's affiliation agreement with a VA facility, not an individual application.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit threads on VA student programs are scattered but first-hand.

A nurse who worked alongside VALOR students said they were often used as patient sitters at that VA, though this was at the peak of COVID and experiences may differ. The thread confirms VALOR is now called VA-STEP.

r/nursing consensus, paraphrased (2024) · read the thread

A BSN junior offered VA-STEP at Nashville or Murfreesboro noted the brochure says students are paid but gives no amount. A commenter who wanted a VA job urged caution because of uncertainty around federal employment.

r/nashville applicant post, paraphrased (2025) · read the thread

Pathways interns in early 2025 reported mixed outcomes: some were let go, some were told they could still convert, and one HR office said it was waiting on guidance. Not VA-specific, but it shows how federal policy can affect interns.

How Do You Stand Out for a VA Student Role?

Three moves. First, be ready before the posting. Keep a federal resume with hours per week and exact dates, an unofficial transcript and your enrollment proof in one folder, so you can apply on day one of a five-day Pathways window.

Second, for VA-STEP, line up your letters in November. The national page requires one letter from a dean or faculty member and one from an employer or manager, and those take weeks to collect. Check your GPA against the 3.0 floor and, at some facilities, the no-grade-below-B rule.

Third, read the qualification questions closely. USAJOBS scores you on the competencies each announcement lists, such as customer service and computer skills, so mirror that language in your resume. The VA doesn't publish applicant numbers or a conversion rate for either route.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 VA internship?

No. VA-STEP's summer 2026 hours ran June to August, and its facility deadlines closed in winter and spring. One VA student role is open now: a Pathways Medical Technician Student Trainee in Ann Arbor that closes 8 October 2026. VA-STEP applications for summer 2027 are expected from about December 2026.

What happened to the VA VALOR program?

It's now VA-STEP, the VA Student Trainee Experience Program. It pays BSN, medical lab science and PharmD students as hourly intermittent employees for 400 hours of clinical practice beside a preceptor. Some VA facility pages still use the old VALOR web address with the new VA-STEP name.

When should I apply for VA-STEP for summer 2027?

From about December 2026. Facilities set their own deadlines: in 2026 Hines closed on 13 February, Salt Lake City on 17 March and Miami on 27 April, and Puget Sound says its window usually runs December to mid-February. A few facilities, such as Oklahoma City, accept applications year-round when slots are available.

How much does VA-STEP pay?

VA-STEP pays 80% of a Nurse I Level I salary at the facility, hourly and intermittent, with no overtime, holiday pay or shift differentials. A 2026 Salt Lake City announcement paid $28.79 an hour. Some announcements show an annualized rate, but hours are capped at 400, so don't read that figure as yearly earnings.

How do I find VA Pathways internships?

Only on USAJOBS. Filter to the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Students hiring path, save the search and turn on email alerts, because announcements often close within five to fourteen days. Don't search for intern on VA: those results are mostly Internal Medicine physician jobs, not student roles.

How many hours do VA Pathways interns need to convert?

480 hours of work, or 320 with a waiver for high performers, plus finishing your degree and meeting the job's qualification standard. Conversion requires US citizenship and a favorable recommendation, and must happen within 120 days of completing your degree, according to the VA's Pathways requirements page.

Is a VA psychology internship a student internship?

No. A VA psychology internship is a doctoral pre-licensure training year matched through APPIC, open only to doctoral students near the end of their programs. Undergraduates interested in VA mental health work should look at Pathways announcements or ask their school about clinical placements instead.

Are VA internships paid?

Pathways internships and VA-STEP are paid federal jobs: recent VA Pathways student trainee postings paid GS-3 to GS-4, about $35,800 to $47,300 a year, and VA-STEP paid $28.79 an hour in Salt Lake City. Clinical rotations through your school aren't VA jobs, and VA Central Office's June 2026 summer internships were unpaid.

VA student roles open in short bursts, with VA-STEP arriving in winter. A remote Externship finished this fall gives your federal resume a real project to point to.
