Reynolds American traces its origins to 1760 and has been part of North Carolina’s industrial landscape for more than 150 years. It is now trying to unmake its own core business. Its stated aim is to "migrate adult smokers from cigarettes to smokeless alternatives and become a predominantly smokeless business by 2035," backed by a $3.2 billion investment in future-ready U.S. manufacturing. Reynolds is an indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of British American Tobacco (NYSE: BTI) and the US parent of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, American Snuff Company and others. Its parent BAT recruits over 500 interns annually across more than 40 locations, and every one of those interns is "in with a chance of securing a place on our Global Graduate Programme." For a student, Reynolds is one of the very few employers where the interesting question is not "can I get in" but "do I want to," a question two of its own intern reviewers answer out loud on Glassdoor. Indeed gives Reynolds a 3.7/5 from 630 reviews, with intern pay and benefits scoring the highest at 3.9/5.

What Is a Reynolds American Internship?

A Reynolds American internship is a 10-week summer placement at a BAT subsidiary that is spending $3.2 billion to transition from combustible cigarettes to smokeless products. The US student internship has historically been a Trade Marketing role: field-based in a metro territory with a company car and fuel paid, visiting retail accounts and executing product programmes like the VUSE vapor rollout. A separate headquarters-based Consumer Marketing track on brands like Camel has also existed. Reynolds is also the US operating entity for BAT’s Global Graduate Programme, an 18-month rotational management trainee track with six-month rotations across five functions (Brand Marketing, Finance & Accounting, HR, Operations, Scientific R&D), a two-week Global Graduate Academy in the UK, and a stated endpoint of a Lead Manager role. The critical distinction for students: the five live 2027 roles are graduate positions requiring 1–3 years of professional experience, not internships. The actual student internship is not currently posted.

When Do Reynolds American Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Reynolds American’s timeline is unusual because two different programmes run on completely different clocks, and the one that is live right now is not the one most students are looking for. The five 2027 Global Graduate Management Trainee requisitions are open for Winston-Salem, but they require 1–3 years of professional experience. The US summer internship (Trade Marketing and related tracks) is historically a 10-week field programme that is not currently posted, and Reynolds publishes no schedule for when it opens.

Five 2027 Global Graduate Management Trainee requisitions are live for Winston-Salem (Brand Marketing, Finance & Accounting, HR, Operations, Scientific R&D). If you have 1–3 years of professional experience, apply now. If you are a current student, these are not for you. Set a Talent Community alert on careers.bat.com filtered to the US.

US summer internship requisitions (Trade Marketing and similar) have not been posted and no schedule is published. Based on seven dated first-hand reviews (2016–2023), the programme has historically run as a 10-week summer placement. Watch careers.bat.com with a US location filter.

When posted

BAT's hiring process involves a screening phase followed by an assessment centre (virtual or in person) with group activities and a business simulation, plus additional interviews for some roles. Prepare for group exercises, not a two-call interview loop.

Summer 2027

Trade Marketing internship runs in a metro territory (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Indianapolis, New York, Jacksonville historically) with a company car and fuel paid. Consumer Marketing internship historically at Winston-Salem headquarters.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Reynolds’ US internship postings are rare and their timing is unpublished, which means the advantage goes to students who have an alert set and apply the day something appears. BAT recruits over 500 interns globally, but the US share is small and field-specific. The one documented path into Reynolds for a current student is the Trade Marketing summer internship, and every year it appears to post and fill without a public announcement. Set a careers.bat.com Talent Community alert with a United States location filter, check monthly, and apply immediately when something appears. If you have 1–3 years of experience, the 2027 Global Graduate Programme is open right now with no published close date.

Which Reynolds American Internship Programs Should You Target?

Reynolds American’s early-career offerings run through BAT’s global early-careers infrastructure. The critical distinction is between the graduate programme (live now, requires experience) and the internship (for students, not currently posted).

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The eligibility bar depends entirely on which programme you are targeting, and the distinction is the most important correction on this page:

Global Graduate Programme (live now): requires "at least 1 to 3 years of professional experience." A graduating senior is not the target. Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field. Willingness to relocate globally is a listed qualification.

Internships (not currently posted): BAT describes its interns as "passionate, courageous and innovative undergraduates." Placements run 3–6 months globally, 10 weeks historically in the US.

GPA: not published anywhere. The requisitions ask for "strong academic performance" without naming a number.

Visa sponsorship: BAT says "we welcome applications from all candidates but in some locations, there may be local government restrictions on who we can sponsor." No US-specific policy stated.

The ethics question: two Glassdoor intern reviewers and one Indeed reviewer raise the nature of the product as the deciding issue. Reynolds is a 21+ regulated industry. Whether you are comfortable working in tobacco and nicotine is a real self-selection question.

Overhead close-up of a marketing strategy workspace with printed charts, colored sticky notes arranged in a grid on a ta

Can a Current Student Apply to the 2027 Global Graduate Roles?

Generally no. Both retrieved requisitions state the programme is "an accelerated, entry-level opportunity for early in career individuals with at least 1 to 3 years of professional experience." It is aimed at people already a year or two into a career. BAT’s FAQ does say you can apply before graduating, but the experience requirement effectively excludes most students. If you are a current student, the Trade Marketing summer internship is the target, and it is not currently posted.

What Skills Does Reynolds American Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Reynolds’ skill profile comes from two sources: the live 2027 Global Graduate requisitions (for the graduate programme, not the internship) and dated first-hand intern reviews (for the Trade Marketing field role). The graduate programme screens for financial research and data analysis, process optimisation and waste reduction, exposure to IWS/Lean/continuous improvement methodologies, change management, team leadership, global mobility willingness, and the ability to translate data into business-focused presentations. The Trade Marketing internship, per its alumni, is a sales execution role: retail calls, customer conversations, territory routing, and programme implementation (the 2023 Dallas intern spent the summer selling in the VUSE vapor programme). The one named tool across all sources is Microsoft Office.

Note: No skill-frequency chart rendered. Zero US intern requisitions were live, and hiring.cafe was unavailable (HTTP 403). Skills above are from two live Global Graduate requisitions and seven dated Trade Marketing intern reviews on Indeed.

What Is the Reynolds American Application and Interview Process Like?

Reynolds American’s application runs through BAT’s global careers infrastructure, and the process includes an assessment centre rather than a standard interview sequence:

1. Apply at careers.bat.com, not reynoldsamerican.com (which redirects). Search by location (Winston-Salem, United States) to find Reynolds-specific roles.

2. Set a Talent Community alert with a US location filter. BAT’s board runs 266 requisitions globally and 45 intern-titled ones, virtually all outside the US. Without a filter you will drown in non-US postings.

3. Pass the screening phase. BAT’s FAQ describes a screening step before the assessment centre.

4. Attend an assessment centre (virtual or in person). BAT says: "Across the day you will be assessed on a number of individual and group activities." Practise group case exercises and business simulations. Additional interviews may follow for some roles.

5. Your recruiter is your point of contact. BAT’s FAQ: "Your Recruiter will be the best point of contact to keep you up to date on progress, advise and feedback on your application."

If your first application is unsuccessful, BAT says you may reapply and recommends using the feedback from previous processes to improve your chances.

What Reynolds Interns Say

Reddit has no usable Reynolds American internship discussion (every search result was contaminated by Reynolds & Reynolds, a different company). The cards below draw on dated, role-labelled Indeed and Glassdoor intern reviews where the employer name was confirmed on the returned page.

A 2023 Trade Marketing intern spent ten weeks in a Dallas territory selling in the new VUSE vapor programme: "My management provided my group with the tools to be successful in implementing and selling the new VUSE vapor program." Supported, fulfilled, and doing real commercial work.

The most recent Glassdoor intern review is a five-star rating. Pros: "People were great, pay was great, they really wanted to help you learn and build professional skills." Cons: "Ethics issues working for a company that makes harmful products." Reynolds responded publicly rather than ignoring it.

A 2022 Trade Marketing intern in Indianapolis gave the balanced verdict: "They definitely want to advertise the job, and while I do think the real job is not as glamorized as the internship, it is still good experience and looks good on the resume. Also, if you work in your home city, you can get a stipend."

How Do You Stand Out at an Employer Where the Real Question Is Whether to Apply?

Reynolds is the rare employer where the ethics question is the first thing to decide, not the last. Two of its own five-star intern reviewers name the product as the only downside. Decide where you stand before the assessment centre, not during it. If you decide to proceed, four moves. First, check whether you are actually eligible: the five live 2027 roles require 1–3 years of professional experience. If you are a current student, the internship is the target, and it is not posted. Set a careers.bat.com alert with a US location filter and check monthly. Second, prepare for an assessment centre with group exercises and a business simulation, not a sequence of one-on-one interviews. Third, say yes to global mobility and mean it: "Willingness to relocate globally" is a listed qualification, and both the review corpus and a Reynolds intern independently say advancement is tied to moving. Fourth, understand the smokeless transition specifically. Know VUSE, know American Snuff and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco, and be able to talk about what "New Category Products" means commercially. Reynolds is spending $3.2 billion on US manufacturing to become predominantly smokeless by 2035. That is what every project you touch will be about.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Reynolds American internship?

No summer 2026 internship requisition was live on the research date. The five live 2027 roles are Global Graduate Management Trainee positions requiring 1–3 years of professional experience. The US summer internship (Trade Marketing) is not currently posted.

Does Reynolds American have its own careers site?

No. reynoldsamerican.com/careers redirects to careers.bat.com, British American Tobacco’s global careers site. Every Reynolds job posting lives on the BAT board with a Winston-Salem location.

Can a current student apply to the 2027 Global Graduate roles?

Generally no. The requisitions require "at least 1 to 3 years of professional experience." Students should look for the Trade Marketing internship instead, which is not currently posted.

How much do Reynolds American interns get paid?

Reynolds publishes no figure. Its requisitions list "Competitive salary." Indeed estimates ~$22.83/hr from seven posting-derived data points. What is confirmed first-hand: Trade Marketing interns get a company car with fuel paid (2018), a home-city stipend is available (2022), and interns consistently describe pay as strong.

What is the interview process?

For the Global Graduate Programme, BAT describes a screening phase followed by an assessment centre with group activities and a business simulation. This is materially different from the two-call process most US employers run. Prepare for group exercises.

Do I have to be willing to relocate?

Yes, for the Global Graduate Programme. "Willingness to relocate globally" is a listed qualification. A Reynolds intern reviewing on Indeed put it the same way: "great upward mobility if you are open to moving around for the earlier years of your career."

Should I be concerned about working for a tobacco company?

That is a question Reynolds’ own interns raise. The most recent Glassdoor intern review lists its only con as "ethics issues working for a company that makes harmful products." Reynolds’ own framing is its 2035 goal of becoming a predominantly smokeless business, backed by $3.2 billion of US manufacturing investment. Decide where you stand before the assessment centre.

Reynolds’ US internship is not posted, and the five live 2027 roles require experience. While you wait for the student track to appear, a remote Externship in brand strategy or operations builds the credential the Global Graduate Programme names as a qualification: "relevant internship, practicum or leadership experience."
