PCL Construction hires its summer interns in the fall, and the summer 2027 class is posted. On 3 October 2026 PCL's own careers site carried 47 US student postings, from "Field Engineer Intern - Summer 2027" in Bellevue to estimating, safety and virtual construction students in Denver, Phoenix, Orlando and Honolulu, plus two solar postings added on 30 September. None states a deadline, but students on Reddit have reported PCL offers in hand by mid October. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

PCL calls itself "proudly 100% employee owned", and its US recruiting lead wrote in 2022 that "we begin recruiting in September for internships that will take place May through August of the following year." Where its postings publish pay, interns earn $18 to $33 an hour.

Applications for summer 2027 are open now in about a dozen US districts, with no stated deadline. PCL recruits in September and students report October offers, so apply this month.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. They sit alongside a PCL application, not in place of one: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the coordination and scheduling a field engineer intern supports, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the cost modeling behind estimating. What Is a PCL Construction Internship?

A PCL Construction internship is a paid, full-time May-to-August placement with one of PCL's US districts, most often as a field engineer intern on a jobsite. Field interns assist field and project engineers, project managers and superintendents: they run safety and quality audits, read drawings and specifications, log submittals and RFIs, help with survey and layout, and coordinate subcontractors.

Not every intern works in the field. PCL also posts safety, estimating, accounting, HR, marketing and virtual construction students, and Nassal, a PCL company in Orlando that builds themed environments, posts its own design, fabrication and production students on the same site.

When Do PCL Construction Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

PCL posted its summer 2027 wave across September: Orlando and Nassal postings from 8 and 9 September 2026, most district postings around 11 and 12 September, Fargo on 14 September, Honolulu safety on 19 September, Minneapolis, Abilene, Glendale and Honolulu field roles from 23 to 26 September, and two PCL Solar postings on 30 September. That's about eight months before a May start, in line with PCL's own line that it begins recruiting in September.

The listed dates may be refresh dates rather than first posting dates, since some postings carry older job IDs. Last cycle, archived copies show a Denver summer 2026 field engineer posting already live by mid-August 2025.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

PCL doesn't publish a deadline, so this is a rolling window, and its own recruiter's description makes the timing clear: recruiting starts in September, and a conversation at a career fair counts as "an initial screening," with a follow-up interview "as soon as the next day." Students on Reddit describe offers in hand by mid to late October.

Seventeen of the 47 postings are pools that say "apply to be considered for future opportunities" rather than named seats, mostly in PCL's Civil West district. Apply to the dated district posting where one exists, and to the pool as well, so you're in front of both.

Which PCL Construction Internship Programs Should You Target?

PCL posts one requisition per district and function, with some regional postings covering several cities. These are the tracks live on 3 October 2026:

Nassal, "a part of the PCL family of companies," posts its nine Orlando student roles, including fabrication and production, on a sub-site of the same careers portal. The PCL US students page covers the program and employee ownership.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

PCL's postings set practical gates more than academic ones:

• Enrollment: "Currently enrolled as a full-time student pursuing a degree relevant to the construction industry such as Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture" for field roles; business tracks take related majors.

• Age and license: 18 or older on 31 postings; a valid driver's license on 29, often with reliable transportation to the site.

• Mobility: many postings ask you to be "willing to temporarily relocate to project locations"; some offer a monthly housing allowance when you're placed away from home.

• Work authorization: at least seven postings say they're "not eligible for visa sponsorship" now or in the future. No posting states a GPA.

Can Freshmen and Sophomores Intern at PCL?

Yes. No posting sets a class year, and PCL's US recruiter wrote in 2022 that "many students start as an intern their sophomore year." One Reddit poster had a PCL offer as a first-year student in October 2025.

Pay reflects that: PCL says intern wages are set "based on the number of completed school terms," so a first-time intern should expect the lower end of a posted range.

What Skills Does PCL Construction Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The field postings share one duty list: assist engineers and superintendents, run safety and quality audits, read drawings and specifications, log submittals and process RFIs, help with survey and layout, coordinate subcontractors, and write memos and meeting minutes. Estimating support, from soliciting subcontractor pricing to takeoffs, shows up across tracks.

Business and design postings add Microsoft Office or Excel, and a handful name Revit, OSHA training or, for technical services in Houston, data tools.

None of these is a construction project, but each trains a habit PCL lists, from keeping vendors on schedule to pricing scope, and each ends in finished work you can walk an interviewer through.

What Is the PCL Construction Application and Interview Process Like?

PCL's postings and its US recruiter describe a short, fast process:

1. Apply on careers.pcl.com to your district's dated posting and, where it exists, the district's "future opportunities" pool.

2. Meet PCL at a career fair. PCL's recruiter wrote that a fair conversation counts as an initial screening, with a follow-up interview possibly the next day.

3. Online video interview. Several postings say selected candidates get an email to complete a short online video interview.

4. Interview with the district. PCL looks for "a passion for construction" and people willing to raise a hand and ask questions.

5. Offer and placement. Offers have gone out in October in past years. Several postings make employment depend on a background check and drug test, and your project is often assigned in late winter or spring.

Ask about housing, relocation and overtime on the offer call. PCL's postings mention a housing allowance for some placements, and community reports say it varies by district.

What Students on Reddit Say

Construction management students discuss PCL internships on Reddit mostly around fall offer decisions.

A first-year student with a PCL Orlando internship offer in early October asked whether to take it. Commenters said PCL makes offers to most of its interns and has a strong backlog, but expects people to move where the work is.

How Do You Stand Out for a PCL Internship?

PCL says it hired more than 150 students last year but doesn't publish how many applied, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves line up with how it recruits:

1. Treat the career fair as the first interview. PCL's recruiter treats it as one. Bring a resume, know which district you want, and expect a follow-up quickly.

2. Show you'll move. Many postings ask for willingness to relocate to project sites. Saying clearly where you can go makes you easier to place.

3. Look past field engineering. Safety, estimating, virtual construction, accounting and HR postings are live in several districts, and Nassal's Orlando roles suit design and fabrication students.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 PCL Construction internship?

No. Summer 2026 internships have ended, but summer 2027 applications are open now: 47 US student postings, posted between 2 and 30 September 2026, across field engineering, safety, estimating, business and design tracks. None has a deadline, but students report offers going out in October, so apply this month.

When does PCL recruit summer interns?

In the fall. PCL's US recruiter wrote in 2022 that it begins recruiting in September for internships running May through August of the following year, and the summer 2027 postings went up in September 2026. Students on Reddit have reported PCL offers in hand by mid to late October.

How much do PCL Construction interns get paid?

Where PCL publishes pay: $28 to $33 an hour in Honolulu, $25 to $28 in Bellevue, $22 to $28 in Aspen and Denver, $20 to $25 in North Dakota, $21 to $25 for Minneapolis HR, and $18 to $24 for Denver estimating and PCL Solar. Wages depend on completed school terms and role.

Does PCL provide housing for interns?

Sometimes. The PCL Solar postings promise a monthly housing allowance for interns working away from home, PCL's recruiting article mentions moving costs and a housing allowance, and Reddit reports describe district-by-district help with rent. Ask about it, with relocation, on your offer call.

What do PCL field engineer interns do?

They assist field and project engineers, project managers and superintendents: running safety and quality audits, reading drawings and specifications, logging submittals and RFIs, helping with survey and layout, coordinating subcontractors, and writing memos and meeting minutes. Some also help estimators gather subcontractor pricing.

Do I need to be a junior to intern at PCL?

No. PCL's postings don't set a class year, and its recruiter wrote in 2022 that many students start interning as sophomores; one Reddit poster had an offer as a first-year. You need full-time enrollment in a construction-related degree, to be 18 or older, and usually a driver's license.

Does PCL sponsor visas for interns?

No, on the postings that address it. At least seven US student postings, including Bellevue and the PCL Solar roles, say they aren't eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the future and require proof of eligibility to work in the US. Check your posting before applying.

Do PCL interns get full-time offers?

PCL doesn't publish a conversion rate, but its postings say it hired more than 150 students last year, and its recruiting article says most interns either return for another summer or are hired full-time after graduation. PCL is employee owned, and salaried staff can buy shares.

PCL's offers have historically gone out in October, so apply to your district now, then use the weeks before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
