The OECD has no internship deadline, but the work is based in Paris and pays a living allowance of EUR 1,000 a month, not a salary. Applications go through one rolling vacancy, Internship Programme, released on 5 January 2026, which accepts applications until 31 December 2026, after which a new vacancy is published. The OECD recruits about 600 to 700 interns a year and gives them mainly to nationals of its 38 member countries, a group that includes the United States, so US students apply directly. It advises applying two to three months before your start. In plain words: you can apply now, and for a May or June 2027 start you apply around February or March 2027, then intern in Paris in summer 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you public-policy data work to describe in a cover letter, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship fits the OECD's finance and investment work. What Is an OECD Internship?

An OECD internship is a stipend-supported placement at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, an international organisation of 38 member countries, founded in 1961 and headquartered in Paris. Interns support policy analysts or corporate teams: they help prepare studies, run research and reviews, collect and analyse data, draft notes and support events. The OECD says it recruits about 600 to 700 interns a year. The programme isn't a US program, so the location matters: most placements are in Paris, and the allowance covers living costs only. The International Energy Agency, the Nuclear Energy Agency, the Financial Action Task Force and the International Transport Forum recruit interns through the same programme.

When Do OECD Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The OECD has no season or cohort. It recruits all year, and each start date is agreed between you and a hiring team. The vacancy open now was released on 5 January 2026 and accepts applications until 31 December 2026, then a new vacancy is published; the posting says so, and I couldn't find the date of the next one. The OECD advises applying two to three months before your start, and the posting says selection can take up to three months, so lead time is the number to plan around. One past intern in the 2026 Reddit thread below said it took about three months from applying to securing a spot.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

The rolling vacancy is open, and anyone with an application in the pool is visible to every directorate. You hear back about pre-screening within about two to three weeks. If no hiring team contacts you within six months, your application lapses.

31 December 2026

The current vacancy stops accepting applications, and the OECD says a new one will be published afterwards.

January 2027EXPECTED

Expected: the replacement vacancy appears. The OECD hasn't announced a date, and applications already in the pool remain visible to hiring teams for up to six months.

February–March 2027EXPECTED

Expected: the practical window for a May or June 2027 start, since the OECD recommends applying two to three months before. In a 2026 Reddit thread, a past intern said securing the spot took about three months and came a month before the start date.

Summer 2027

Typical start window. Start dates and length (one to six months, renewable to twelve) are agreed with the hiring team.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

This one is rolling, so there's no first-week rush, but there's still a reason to apply early. Selection can take up to three months, interviews are done remotely by video, and your application sits in a pool that every directorate can search. The vacancy open now closes on 31 December 2026, and the OECD hasn't said when its replacement appears, so apply before the end of the year if you want a start in the first half of 2027.

Which OECD Internship Programs Should You Target?

There's one OECD internship programme with several entry points, plus a separate programme for recent graduates.

The OECD's own internships page, brochure and FAQ cover the details, including an online eligibility tester.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

These come from the OECD's internships page, FAQ and posting.

• Enrollment: a full-time degree programme (bachelor's, master's or PhD) at an accredited university, for the whole internship. Online-only and non-degree programmes don't count.

• Graduation: you can't graduate during the internship. The OECD removes you from the pool once you graduate.

• Nationality: internships are "primarily allocated" to nationals of OECD member countries, which include the United States. Non-members are considered for specific programmes and bodies.

• Languages: fluency in English or French, plus working knowledge of or willingness to learn the other.

• Skills: solid quantitative and computer skills, drafting and communication skills.

• Paperwork: a three-way agreement signed by you, your university and the OECD; proof of medical insurance and, if needed, a visa, with help from the OECD visa team.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

No GPA is published in the posting, the FAQ or the brochure. The posting asks for "academic success" and a field related to the OECD's work, and a Reddit commenter said internships are hard to come by and the process is long, so treat your record as a screening factor and not a number to hit.

What Skills Does the OECD Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The OECD posts one internship vacancy, so there's no pool of job descriptions to count. It asks for solid quantitative and computer skills (with Microsoft Office), strong analytical skills, the ability to plan and run research independently, very good drafting and communication skills, and good organisation under tight deadlines. Interns' tasks include data work, literature reviews and drafting notes and technical annexes.

Note: No skill-frequency chart for this page. The OECD publishes a single internship vacancy covering every directorate, so there's no set of job descriptions to count. The skills above come from that posting (reference REF2793W), read on 16 October 2026.

For OECD applicants: The OECD recruits through its own SmartRecruiters page, which this card doesn't cover. On 16 October 2026 that board listed one internship vacancy, in English and French copies of the same programme, open until 31 December 2026.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each row ties a skill the OECD posting asks for to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to cite in your cover letter.

None of these Externships is connected to the OECD. They help because the OECD asks for a cover letter that links your background to specific policy areas, and a finished project gives you something concrete to say.

What Is the OECD Application and Interview Process Like?

The OECD describes four stages in its FAQ.

1. Apply online. Submit your CV and a cover letter through the SmartRecruiters vacancy, choosing up to three areas of interest and stating your availability. The cover letter goes in "Message to Hiring Manager".

2. Pre-screening. The Internship Office screens applications and places suitable candidates in a pool visible to every directorate. You hear back about pre-screening within two to three weeks.

3. Interview or written test. Hiring teams run a remote video interview, competency-based with scenario and technical questions, and some add a written test specific to their directorate.

4. Offer and agreement. You get an offer by email, then sign a three-way agreement with your university and the OECD. The internship is confirmed only after everyone signs.

The OECD gives no individual feedback to candidates who aren't shortlisted.

What Students on Reddit Say

Applicants on r/InternationalDev, r/UNpath and r/WorldBank discuss timing, competition and what an OECD internship leads to.

A 2026 applicant who wanted a May start worried they'd applied too late. A past intern replied that it took about three months overall: quick HR validation, a slow wait for the team lead, then a CV, letter, written test and interview within a month, securing the spot a month before the start date.

r/InternationalDev applicants (Feb 2026), paraphrased · read the thread

A student in Paris with offers from UNESCO and the OECD said OECD internships are hard to come by and the process was long. Commenters pointed out that the OECD pays an allowance while many UN internships are unpaid. This 2023 thread is from a non-member-country applicant who needed an exception.

r/UNpath poster and commenters (May 2023), paraphrased · read the thread

In a thread comparing a World Bank and an OECD internship, people who say they worked at the OECD described a path from intern to consultant to staff and called the two institutions broadly interchangeable on reputation. This is community opinion, not an OECD statement.

How Do You Stand Out for an OECD Internship?

First, choose up to three policy areas and tie your cover letter to specific OECD projects or publications, as the OECD's own brochure advises. Second, state your availability precisely and apply two to three months before your start. Third, keep your enrollment valid through the end date, because graduating mid-internship disqualifies you. The OECD doesn't publish applicant counts, an acceptance rate or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 OECD internship?

Summer 2026 starts have passed, and the OECD has no summer cohort anyway. It recruits on a rolling basis, and the vacancy open now accepts applications until 31 December 2026. Apply now and state a 2027 availability, or wait for the replacement vacancy and aim for a May or June 2027 start.

Are OECD interns paid?

Not with a salary. The OECD pays a contribution to living expenses of EUR 1,000 per full calendar month worked, which its brochure gives as the Paris figure. It doesn't provide housing, travel costs, a transit pass or health insurance, so you must show proof of medical cover. Stays over two months earn 2.5 days of leave a month.

Can US students apply for an OECD internship?

Yes. The OECD gives internships primarily to nationals of its member countries, and the United States is one of its 38 members. You apply directly through the OECD's SmartRecruiters vacancy, and if you're selected the OECD visa team helps you obtain a visa for Paris.

Where is the OECD internship based, and can it be remote?

The vast majority are in Paris, France. The OECD says internships can be remote or hybrid if the hiring team agrees. OECD Centres, including Washington, DC, occasionally recruit interns for communication or event roles. The OECD doesn't say whether remote interns get the same allowance, so ask the hiring team.

When should I apply for a summer 2027 OECD internship?

The OECD recommends applying two to three months before your intended start, so about February or March 2027 for a May or June start. Selection can take up to three months, so applying earlier, while the current vacancy is open until 31 December 2026, gives you more margin.

Can I graduate during an OECD internship?

No. One of the criteria is being enrolled in a full-time, accredited degree programme for the whole internship, and the OECD removes you from its candidate pool once you graduate. Online-only courses and programmes that don't award a degree don't qualify, so check your end date before you apply.

How long does the OECD internship process take?

Up to about three months. You should hear about pre-screening within two to three weeks, then hiring teams may contact you for a video interview or written test. If no directorate contacts you within six months, the application wasn't retained, and you can update it and reapply.

Does an OECD internship lead to a job?

Not by guarantee. The OECD says it can't promise you another position, though interns may apply to open vacancies. Former staff on Reddit describe an intern to consultant to staff path, but that is community opinion, not a published rate. The OECD also runs a separate Young Associates Programme for recent undergraduates.

The current OECD vacancy closes on 31 December 2026, and the next one is yet to be announced. Apply early, and if you want a finished project to cite in your cover letter, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
