Last updated: October 2026
Every National Park Service internship open today is unpaid. The agency posted 19 Semester of Service volunteer projects on USAJOBS on 16 October 2026, from Yellowstone to San Juan, and they close on 29 October 2026 for a Spring 2027 term. Eight of them close sooner if they hit 25, 30 or 50 applications. The paid National Park Service internships, listed at about $640 to $900 a week, run through partner organizations, and their summer 2027 windows are expected to open from mid-December 2026 to early February 2027. In plain words: you apply between October 2026 and February 2027, you intern in spring or summer 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship builds environmental data skills like those in the Park Service's monitoring projects, and the Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior Externship fits its visitor outreach work. What Is a National Park Service Internship?
A National Park Service internship is a student placement with the agency that has cared for the national parks since 1916 and now shares them with more than 318 million visitors every year. The route you take decides pay, dates and who can apply. The Semester of Service is a government-wide program, posted on USAJOBS, where students do unpaid project work for at least 90 days. The paid internships run through partner organizations such as Environment for the Americas and Conservation Legacy, which apply through their own sites. Pathways is the federal student employment program, posted on USAJOBS when a park or office has a role. Volunteers-In-Parks and the Youth Conservation Corps (ages 15 to 18) are separate routes. Seasonal ranger jobs aren't internships.

When Do National Park Service Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The Park Service has no single season. The Semester of Service posts about three months before each term: the Spring 2027 projects opened on 16 October 2026 for a term starting in mid-January, a lead of about three months, and the agency hasn't published dates for later terms. The paid partner programs follow the recurring windows on the NPS page: most summer internships take applications from mid-December to early February and start in mid-May or June, about five months after the window opens. Pathways postings appear park by park, and USAJOBS records show short windows of one to two weeks.
19 Semester of Service projects for the Spring 2027 term are open until 29 October 2026 at 11:59 pm Eastern. They are unpaid, and eight close early at 25, 30 or 50 applications.
Expected: the Business Plan Internship for summer 2027 (graduate students, $900 weekly stipend, housing included) closes. The NPS page says applications open in the fall and close in early December.
Expected: applications for summer 2027 open for the Latino Heritage, HBCU, Build Up, Scientists in Parks (summer season), Let's Go Birding and Fish and Feathers internships, each with its own partner deadline.
Expected: park-level paid student-trainee postings on USAJOBS. USAJOBS records show Park Guide and biological science student-trainee postings in January to March 2025 and January 2026. The Spring 2027 term starts in mid-January.
Partner internships run 10 to 12 weeks from mid-May or June to August. Later Semester of Service windows haven't been announced.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
These are hard deadlines, not rolling reviews. The Spring 2027 Semester of Service closes at 11:59 pm Eastern on 29 October 2026, and eight of the 19 announcements close earlier when they reach 25, 30 or 50 applications. The partner windows are fixed too, each ending on its own date in January or early February. Treat the posted close date as the latest you can apply, and submit in the first days, because a capped project can close the day it opens.
Which National Park Service Internship Programs Should You Target?
The Park Service lists several routes, and they differ on pay, so check the label before you apply.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester of Service (unpaid, open now) | 19 volunteer projects: museum collections, GIS, ecological monitoring, outreach, graphic design | 90+ days, 8–20 hrs/week, mid-Jan to mid-Jun 2027 | Research, data, GIS, communication |
| Paid partner internships (Latino Heritage, HBCU, Scientists in Parks, Fish and Feathers and more) | Natural and cultural resources, interpretation, science; hiring authority on completion | 10–12 weeks in summer; longer year-round | Varies by program |
| Business Plan Internship (graduate students) | Operational challenges in parks; $900 weekly stipend with housing and transport | 11 weeks, early June to mid-August | Business, policy, analysis |
| Pathways Internship Program | Paid federal student jobs at parks and offices, posted on USAJOBS | Year-round or summer | Varies by posting |
| Volunteers-In-Parks | Unpaid volunteering at individual parks | Set by the park | Varies |
| Youth Conservation Corps (ages 15–18) | Summer conservation and education work, apply to the park | 8–10 weeks | Outdoor and teamwork skills |
Details sit on the NPS Jobs and Internships page, which the agency updated on 15 October 2026, and on the Pathways page, which lists a coordinator for each region.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Eligibility depends on the route. These are the Semester of Service rules from the 2026 announcements, then the paid programs.
• Citizenship: U.S. citizen or U.S. national, studying in the U.S. or abroad.
• Enrollment: at least half-time at an accredited U.S. school for the whole 90 days, in good academic standing, with a school official signing an approval form.
• Graduation: "Students graduating before May 1, 2027 are not eligible" for the Spring 2027 projects.
• Federal employees: current federal employees can't apply; the announcement points them to detail opportunities instead.
• Paid partner programs: ages 15 to 30, or military veterans 35 or younger; Latino Heritage and HBCU are for undergraduate and graduate students, and the Business Plan Internship is for graduate students.
• Screening: no security clearance or drug test for the Semester of Service.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?
No number is published for the Semester of Service. It asks for "good academic standing" as your school defines it, plus transcripts and proof of half-time enrollment. Paid partner programs set their own criteria on the partner's site, so read each one before applying.
What Skills Does the National Park Service Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The 19 projects ask for practical skills rather than a major. Outreach and interpretation and hands-on site work each appear in seven projects, from drafting a walking tour to painting a memorial's inscriptions. Research, data work and writing follow at five each, and four projects use GIS or mapping. The two remote projects lean on policy writing and R-based analysis.
What National Park Service looks for in interns
Skills across 19 National Park Service intern & analyst job descriptions · Semester of Service announcements, 16 October 2026
Method: I read the duties of all 19 National Park Service Semester of Service announcements open on USAJOBS on 16 October 2026 and tagged each project with every skill it names, so a project can carry several tags. The tagging is a judgment call, and one semester's mix of projects isn't a hiring forecast.

For National Park Service applicants: The Park Service posts on USAJOBS, which this card doesn't cover. On 16 October 2026 its board showed 19 student projects, all unpaid and all closing 29 October, so a saved USAJOBS search is your alert.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row ties a duty from a live Park Service announcement to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to describe.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental data analysis | Sea Turtle Data Analysis project: "R, ArcGIS, and statistical modelling"; San Juan monitoring: "basic statistical interpretation" | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Records and public-sector data | Historical Research and Database Management: "Enter genealogical data"; Yellowstone permits: "Enter data into mapping systems" | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics |
| Audience insight for outreach | Star-Spangled Banner Trail: "engage the public"; Tuskegee STEM Day: "outreach to local schools" | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
| Storytelling and campaigns | Mount Locust: "drafting clear, engaging interpretive text for public audiences" | Beats by Dre Creative Advertising Strategy |
None of these Externships is connected to the National Park Service. They help because a finished project gives you something specific to put in a two-page resume or tell a hiring partner.
What Is the National Park Service Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the 2026 Semester of Service announcements and the NPS Jobs and Internships page.
1. Pick your route. The Semester of Service is unpaid and applied for on USAJOBS. Each paid partner program takes applications on its own site, linked from the NPS page.
2. Build your USAJOBS package by 29 October. Create an account, then upload a resume of two pages or fewer (10-point font, 0.5-inch margins), your transcripts and proof of half-time enrollment.
3. Review. Interior Department personnel check your eligibility, then forward your application to the project manager.
4. Onboarding. Selected students get a school official to sign an approval form and complete Interior onboarding before the term starts in mid-January.
5. For paid programs, apply on the partner's site inside its window, which the NPS page lists as mid-December to early February for most summer internships.
Choose projects that match your coursework, because the announcements describe specific duties and not a general internship.
What Students on Reddit Say
Students on r/NationalParkService, r/usajobs and r/ParkRangers mostly discuss how to find an opening, and several threads are a few years old.
Asked where a student without a degree could find a conservation internship with housing, commenters pointed to partner programs such as the Student Conservation Association, the Great Basin Institute, Scientists in Parks and Conservation Legacy. One said that emailing a park directly worked for them, and that some parks offer housing to interns and volunteers.
A commenter with Park Service experience said you shouldn't need prior experience at the intern or volunteer level. Spots through the Student Conservation Association and AmeriCorps can be competitive in good locations, and parks often publicise opportunities poorly, so volunteer.gov and direct contact help.
Past interns described survey and mapping work on historic landmarks, ethnobotany research from historic documents and engineering support at Yosemite, where one paid roughly $125 a paycheck for park housing. One said a regular resume worked for a Pathways application. The thread is from 2019, so pay and housing details may have changed.
How Do You Stand Out for a National Park Service Internship?
First, match the route to your situation: if you can afford unpaid work this spring, apply to the Semester of Service by 29 October, and if you need pay, prepare for the partner windows in December and January. Second, tailor your two-page resume to the duties in the project you pick, with dates, hours and results. Third, contact the parks you like, since the Park Service itself advises asking a park directly about its opportunities. The agency doesn't publish applicant counts, an acceptance rate or a conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 National Park Service internship?
No, summer 2026 internships have already run, and the partner windows for them normally close by early February. What is open now is the unpaid Spring 2027 Semester of Service, closing 29 October 2026. Paid summer 2027 partner windows are expected to open from mid-December 2026 to early February 2027.
Are National Park Service internships paid?
It depends on the route. All 19 Semester of Service projects open now are unpaid, with no stipend or hiring preference. The paid internships run through partner organizations, and the NPS page lists stipends from $640 a week (Fish and Feathers) to $900 a week (Business Plan). Pathways jobs are paid, but none is posted now.
When do National Park Service internship applications close?
The Spring 2027 Semester of Service closes at 11:59 pm Eastern on 29 October 2026, and eight of the 19 announcements close sooner at 25, 30 or 50 applications. Partner programs for summer 2027 are expected to close around early February 2027, based on the recurring dates the NPS page lists.
Who is eligible for a National Park Service internship?
The Semester of Service needs U.S. citizenship or nationality, half-time enrollment at a U.S. accredited school for the whole 90 days, and graduation on or after 1 May 2027. The paid partner programs are generally for ages 15 to 30, or veterans up to 35, and several are limited to undergraduate or graduate students.
Can I do a National Park Service internship remotely?
Yes, a few. Two of the 19 Semester of Service projects are remote: Special Use Permit Program Modernization and Sea Turtle Data Analysis and Research Support. Most others are in person at a park, and several are hybrid. The NPS page also says some Build Up Technical Internship positions are remote.
Do National Park Service interns get housing?
Not in the Semester of Service, which is unpaid and provides no housing or stipend. Several paid partner programs include or arrange it: the Business Plan Internship includes housing and transport, and Fish and Feathers, HBCU and Latino Heritage provide housing and travel for out-of-state interns, according to the NPS page.
Does a National Park Service internship lead to a job?
Not automatically. The Semester of Service grants no hiring preference. The paid partner programs may carry the Public Lands Corps hiring authority or the Direct Hire Authority for Resource Assistant Internships on completion, per the NPS page. The agency publishes no conversion rate, so treat an internship as a credential and not a pipeline.
How do I find openings at a specific park?
Search USAJOBS for National Park Service with the Students filter and save the search for email alerts. Then check the NPS Jobs and Internships page and the website of any park you like. The NPS itself advises contacting a park directly, since each park may know about opportunities that aren't listed centrally.
The Spring 2027 projects close on 29 October 2026, and the paid summer windows follow from mid-December. If you want a finished project to put in your resume, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
