Last updated: October 2026
The only USGS student openings today are unpaid. The U.S. Geological Survey has two Semester of Service volunteer projects on USAJOBS for the Spring 2027 term, both closing on 29 October 2026: an Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Technician project in Lansing, Michigan and an Energy Geochemistry Database project in Denver. Paid Pathways internships are rare. Of 306 USGS announcements opened since January 2025, 10 were open to students, and only 2, both in January 2025, paid. USGS says its summer internships are typically posted from December to February. In plain words: you apply between now and February 2027, you intern in spring or summer 2027.
Quick Facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|

Two unpaid Spring 2027 projects close on 29 October 2026; USGS says paid summer internships are typically posted from December to February, though none appeared in that window in 2026.
Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship builds environmental data skills like those in USGS's data projects, and the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship gives you public-sector data work to describe. What Is a USGS Internship?
A USGS internship is a student placement with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Interior Department science bureau that studies water, ecosystems, natural hazards, energy and minerals, with offices in every state. Three kinds exist. The Semester of Service is a government-wide volunteer program, posted on USAJOBS, where students do unpaid project work for at least 90 days. Pathways is the federal student employment program: paid, part-time or full-time, with possible non-competitive conversion. Partner-managed internships, run through groups such as ORISE, aren't administered by USGS human resources. Right now, only the unpaid Semester of Service route has open announcements.

When Do USGS Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
USGS student recruiting happens in short bursts. USAJOBS records show the Fall 2026 volunteer projects open from 9 July with the term starting 15 August, a lead of about 1.2 months, and the Spring 2027 projects open from 16 October for a mid-January start, about 3 months. The Semester of Service rounds in 2026 ran 1 to 10 May and 9 to 22 July. Paid Pathways postings were in January 2025 (3 to 15 January and 21 January to 3 February), and the USGS page says summer internships are typically posted from December to February.
Two Semester of Service projects for the Spring 2027 term are open until 29 October 2026 at 11:59 pm Eastern: Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Technician (Lansing, 2 positions) and Expanding the Energy Geochemistry Database (Denver). Both are unpaid and run from mid-January to mid-June 2027.
Expected, low confidence: paid Pathways summer internships. USGS says summer internships are typically posted in this window, but USAJOBS shows none in December 2025 to February 2026 and two in January 2025, each open about two weeks.
Expected, low to medium confidence: the next Semester of Service round, based on the 1 to 10 May 2026 round of three projects.
Expected: a Semester of Service round for the Fall 2027 term, based on the 9 to 22 July 2026 round for a Fall 2026 term from 15 August to 15 December.
Paid Pathways interns, if USGS posts any, work part-time or full-time. The ESA-USGS Cooperative Summer Fellowship is nomination-only, and the ESA page said it offered no positions in 2025.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
These are hard deadlines, not rolling reviews. The two Spring 2027 announcements close at 11:59 pm Eastern on 29 October 2026, and the student announcements in 2025 and 2026 stayed open only 6 to 13 days. A saved USAJOBS search is the practical fix, because USGS hasn't published dates for summer postings and a paid window can be as short as two weeks.
Which USGS Internship Programs Should You Target?
USGS lists internships in two groups: ones it hires for directly, and ones partners manage.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester of Service (unpaid, open now) | Project-based volunteering at science centers: labs, data, remote sensing, science communication | 90+ days, 8–20 hrs/week; Spring 2027 term | Lab work, data, GIS, writing |
| Pathways Internship (paid) | Federal student jobs posted on USAJOBS; non-competitive conversion possible | Part-time or full-time, summer or year-round | Varies by posting |
| Bromery Internship (ORISE, paid) | Research and operations internship for undergraduate, graduate and recent-graduate students | Varies | Research skills |
| Virtual Student Federal Service (unpaid) | Remote projects run by the Department of State for U.S. citizens | Academic year | Varies |
| ESA-USGS Cooperative Summer Fellowship | Nomination-only summer internships for field-trained undergraduates | Summer | Field research |
The USGS internship opportunities page explains each route, and its partner page lists ORISE, NSF and university programs that USGS human resources doesn't run.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
These come from the two Spring 2027 announcements and the USGS Pathways pages.
• Citizenship: Semester of Service requires a U.S. citizen or U.S. national, studying in the U.S. or abroad.
• Enrollment: at least half-time at an accredited school for the whole 90-day term, in good academic standing, at a U.S. institution. Students graduating before 1 May 2027 aren't eligible.
• Federal employees: current federal employees can't apply to the Semester of Service.
• Pathways: enrolled at least half-time and at least 16 years old, with no limit on how many times you can be appointed.
• Screening: no security clearance or drug test for the Semester of Service.
• Documents: transcripts attached to the application; a school official signs an approval form if you're selected.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?
No number is published. The Semester of Service asks for good academic standing as your school defines it, and the announcements require transcripts. Selection rests on how your coursework matches the project, such as basic lab experience for the Lansing microbiology project.
What Skills Does the USGS Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Each project names its own skills, and the two open ones are quite different. The Lansing microbiology project asks for basic lab experience from high-school training or college coursework, a degree in biology, microbiology, environmental science or earth science, and the ability to follow protocols. The Denver project is an IT student-trainee role: quality-control reviews and adding outside laboratory data to a database of nearly 4 million energy geochemistry results. The 2026 rounds added aquatic remote sensing, field and lab data collection, science communication and data visualization.
Note: No skill-frequency chart for this page. USGS posts a handful of student announcements a year (8 Semester of Service projects since May 2026), each for a different science center, so there is no meaningful pool of job descriptions to count. The skills above come from the live announcements and the 2026 project titles.
How Is Demand for Environmental Interns Moving Right Now?

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row ties a USGS project to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to describe in your application.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental data collection and analysis | 2026 projects: "Field/Lab Data Collection and Analysis" and "Physical Science Data Collection and Analysis" | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Data synthesis and visualization | 2026 project: "Science Synthesis and Data Visualization" at the Fort Collins Science Center | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics |
| Databases and data extraction | Live project: "Expanding the Energy Geochemistry Database" (IT Student Trainee, Denver) | Pfizer Advanced: AI-Powered Document Insights & Data Extraction |
| Science communication | 2026 project: "Science Communications & Synthesis Support for Pollinator Research" | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
None of these Externships is connected to USGS. They help because a finished project gives you something specific to describe when a short USAJOBS announcement asks how your experience fits the project.
What Is the USGS Application and Interview Process Like?
The steps below come from the USGS student pages and the 2026 announcements.
1. Set up USAJOBS. Create a profile and resume, upload transcripts, and save a search for "Geological Survey" with the Students filter so you get an email when one posts.
2. Apply before the close date. Map your resume to the stated qualifications and attach every required document. Announcements have stayed open about one to two weeks.
3. Review. USGS evaluates applications against the announcement's qualifications; the announcements describe no test.
4. Onboarding. Selected Semester of Service students have a school official sign an approval form and complete Interior Department onboarding.
Check your class schedule first, since the Semester of Service needs 8 to 20 hours a week for 90 days.
What the Community Says
The Reddit threads about USGS internships are a few years old and describe the paid summer internships of earlier years, so treat them as context.
Asked how hard a USGS internship is to get, commenters told undergraduates to look at Pathways or the field-camp nomination route, said studying near a USGS office helps, and said internships are easier to land than permanent jobs. One noted that federal pay with only a bachelor's degree is low.
A student with two summer offers, in Menlo Park and Denver, and one day to decide was advised to pick by research fit. A commenter who had interned at USGS said the experience looks good on a resume, even when the work wasn't directly related.
In 2016 a student offered a Pathways position that converted to a full-time GS-7 job asked whether to take it. Commenters described Pathways roles as usually spanning two terms and built for conversion, though one said USGS hires many interns and few professionals. The thread is old, and pay and rules have changed.
How Do You Stand Out for a USGS Internship?
First, decide whether you can afford an unpaid project this spring, because the announcements promise no stipend or hiring preference. Second, mirror the announcement's language in your resume and match your coursework to the project, such as lab experience for a microbiology role. Third, set a saved USAJOBS search and check it often, since windows last one to two weeks. USGS doesn't publish applicant counts, an acceptance rate or a conversion rate.

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 USGS internship?
No. The 2026 student announcements closed in May and July 2026. What's open now are two unpaid Spring 2027 Semester of Service projects, closing 29 October 2026. For summer 2027, USGS says its summer internships are typically posted from December to February, but it hasn't announced dates.
Are USGS internships paid?
Some are, but the ones open now aren't. The two Spring 2027 Semester of Service projects are unpaid, with no stipend or hiring preference. Pathways internships are paid, but the last two were posted in January 2025, at $17.30 to $21.24 an hour for a GS-3 role. ORISE Bromery internships are paid too.
When do USGS internship applications close?
The two Spring 2027 announcements close at 11:59 pm Eastern on 29 October 2026. Student announcements in 2025 and 2026 stayed open between 6 and 13 days, so a USAJOBS saved search matters. USGS hasn't published a date for summer 2027 postings.
Who is eligible for a USGS internship?
For the Semester of Service you must be a U.S. citizen or national, enrolled at least half-time at an accredited U.S. school for the whole 90 days, and graduating on or after 1 May 2027. Pathways requires at least half-time enrollment and age 16 or older. Current federal employees can't apply to the Semester of Service.
Can I do a USGS internship remotely?
Sometimes. Four of the six Semester of Service projects posted in May and July 2026 were remote, but the two open now, in Lansing and Denver, are in person. The Virtual Student Federal Service, managed by the Department of State, offers unpaid remote internships to U.S. citizen students, including with USGS.
