Last updated: October 2026
Granite Construction employed 243 interns from 95 colleges and universities in 2025, according to its annual report, and it recruits them one office at a time. On 3 October 2026 Granite's Workday board carried 30 live US intern postings, up from 21 a week earlier, from "Engineer Intern- Summer 2027" in Watsonville, California to "Field Engineer Intern - Tunnel" in Cleveland. All were posted between 9 September and 2 October 2026. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and you apply to the office or region where you want to work.
Granite is a heavy civil contractor and construction materials producer: it builds highways, bridges, dams, tunnels and transit, and runs its own quarries and asphalt plants. It reported $4.42 billion of revenue for 2025. Where it publishes intern pay, it's $21 to $30 an hour, and every posting offers eligible interns medical plans and a 401(k) match.

Most summer 2027 postings are rolling, but three Midwest and tunnel postings close on 31 October 2026. Find your region's posting first and check whether it carries that date.
Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. Do one alongside your Granite application, not instead of it: the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the crew, schedule and productivity tracking a field engineer intern does, and the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship builds the cost modeling behind estimates and change orders. What Is a Granite Construction Internship?
A Granite Construction internship is a paid, three-to-four-month placement on a heavy civil jobsite, at a materials plant or in a regional office of Granite Construction Company. Engineer interns do quantity takeoffs from drawings, help price estimates and bids, track quantities installed for cost control, and support change orders, status reports and punch lists.
Granite's internships FAQ says interns are paired with a manager and "treated as employees from day one." That's literal on benefits: every posting offers eligible interns two medical plans, one with the premium fully paid by Granite, plus a 401(k) with a 100% match on the first 6% you defer.

When Do Granite Construction Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Granite's FAQ says it "typically begins recruiting for summer internships during the fall semester," and this year the wave started on 9 September 2026 and was still growing into October: postings for Washington, Nevada, Texas and Alaska appeared between 28 September and 2 October. That's about nine months before a June start.
The postings are regional, and so are the dates. Three postings, Des Plaines field engineer and safety and the Cleveland tunnel role, carry a Workday end date of 31 October 2026. The other 27 show none. Last cycle, Granite kept adding regional postings into spring 2026 (an Idaho engineer internship appears to have been added around April), so regions with no posting yet, such as Idaho and Guam, may still open.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 30 postings across California, Utah, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Alaska, Illinois and Ohio. Apply to each region you'd work in; Granite says multiple applications are welcome.
Scheduled close for three summer 2027 postings: Intern Field Engineer and Safety Intern for the Midwest Region in Des Plaines, Illinois, and Field Engineer Intern - Tunnel in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rolling interviews and offers for the other summer 2027 postings. More regional postings are expected, as last cycle's were added into spring.
Summer 2027 internships are expected to start, based on last cycle's June start dates.
Three to four months on a jobsite, at a plant or in an office. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open in September 2027 if the calendar repeats.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Granite runs two clocks at once. For the Midwest and tunnel postings it's a hard deadline: Workday shows an end date of 31 October 2026, and once a Granite posting closes its requisition comes off the board. If you want Des Plaines or Cleveland, apply this month.
For the other 27 postings there's no stated date, and each office hires its own interns, so the practical deadline is when that office fills its seats. Granite starts recruiting in the fall semester for a reason: offices interview the applicants in front of them. Apply to your target regions in October, then watch the board for regions that haven't posted yet.
Which Granite Construction Internship Programs Should You Target?
Granite runs college internships as individual postings, mostly under one "Engineer Intern" job profile. These are the tracks live on 3 October 2026:
| Track | Focus | Where it's posted | Posted pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineer, field and project engineer | Takeoffs, estimates and bids, change orders, quantity tracking, punch lists | California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Texas, Des Plaines IL, Cleveland OH (tunnel) | $21 to $28/hr where posted |
| Plant engineer | Production at construction materials plants | Watsonville, Ukiah, Pleasanton CA | $24 to $27/hr |
| Safety | Field and office safety programs | Santa Clara, Indio CA; Salt Lake City; Everett WA; Anchorage; Des Plaines IL | $21 to $27/hr where posted |
| Equipment | Heavy equipment fleet support | Santa Maria CA area; Salt Lake City | $22 to $30/hr (California) |
| Environmental, material sales, business administration | Environmental compliance; supporting a materials sales rep; finance and accounting support for a regional controller | Salt Lake City; Pleasanton CA; Watsonville CA | Material sales $24 to $27/hr; business administration $25 to $26/hr; environmental not posted |
Search Granite's Workday board for "intern". Granite also lets you submit a general resume through Workday from its internships page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Granite's requirements are practical, and they vary by track:
• Education: engineer postings require a high school diploma and work toward a bachelor's degree; material sales and the Utah engineer posting accept two years of college. Safety postings want a safety or occupational health program.
• Majors: civil engineering, construction management or business administration are preferred for engineer roles; equipment roles want engineering or information systems management.
• Field readiness: engineer postings ask for a valid driver's license (14 of 30 postings), the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and comfort working outdoors around heavy equipment.
• Experience: Granite's FAQ says prior experience isn't required.
• Not stated: GPA and visa sponsorship. None of the 30 postings mentions either, so ask the recruiter if one applies to you.

Is Granite the Same as Graniterock?
No, and it matters when you apply. Graniterock is a separate Central California aggregates and construction company with its own intern program. Granite Construction Incorporated is the NYSE-listed heavy civil contractor headquartered in Watsonville, and its internships are only on its own Workday board.
Granite's subsidiaries, such as Layne and Lehman-Roberts, share that board, but on 3 October all 30 intern postings were under Granite Construction Company.
What Skills Does Granite Construction Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Granite's engineer postings share one duty list, and it reads like a field engineer's week: read drawings for takeoffs, price estimates and bids, support change orders, write status reports and punch lists, and keep records of quantities installed for cost control. They also ask for trigonometric calculations, done by hand or calculator.
Three postings, in Utah and Garland, Texas, name HeavyJob for crew timecards; otherwise no construction software is named. The skills that repeat across every track are Microsoft Office and communicating effectively with crews and managers.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
Heavy civil and infrastructure employers are posting in the same weeks as Granite, so the construction management and civil students it wants are choosing now. Apply this month, and before 31 October for the Midwest and tunnel roles.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each of those duties can be practiced before day one:
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Crew, material and schedule tracking | "material requirement calculations"; managing crew timecards and material ordering (2026 intern testimonial) | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Estimating and cost control | "quantity take-offs and material pricing for estimates and bids" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis, Private Company Valuation |
| Quantity and cost records | "records of quantities installed for cost control" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
None of these is a jobsite, but each trains a habit Granite lists, from pricing a scope to keeping a clean quantity log, and each ends in work you can explain in an interview.
What Is the Granite Construction Application and Interview Process Like?
Granite's FAQ lays out a short process, and its postings fill in the rest:
1. Search the Workday board for "intern" and pick the posting for the office or region you want. Each office posts separately.
2. Apply to each posting you'd accept. Granite's FAQ says you're welcome to apply for multiple internship opportunities.
3. Application review. Granite reviews your application against that office's needs; there's also an optional general resume submission in Workday.
4. One or more interviews with recruiters, hiring managers or team members, per the FAQ. An older Reddit report describes a mostly behavioral internship interview with the company presenting itself.
5. Offer. Interns are paired with a manager and work closely with experienced team members once they start.
Know the difference between Granite's two businesses before you interview. Construction builds the projects and Materials runs the quarries and asphalt plants, and plant engineer, equipment and material sales roles sit on the materials side.
What Students on Reddit Say
Granite threads are few, but several come from people who have worked there.
A student weighing Granite against a smaller firm heard from a current Granite project engineer that location matters but the company as a whole is great. Others said smaller firms may pay more, but lack Granite's admin support and benefits, and that experience depends on the group.
Someone who has worked for both Kiewit and Granite explains that Granite builds around its home markets, growing a construction business near its own quarries and hot plants rather than chasing projects everywhere.
A Cal Poly civil engineering student weighed the Granite-funded heavy civil minor, which comes with a paid summer internship but adds about two quarters to the degree.
How Do You Stand Out for a Granite Construction Internship?
Granite publishes its intern headcount (243 in 2025) but not applicant numbers or a conversion rate, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves fit what its postings ask for:
1. Speak heavy civil. Granite builds highways, bridges, dams and tunnels and makes its own aggregates and asphalt. Show you know how that differs from a commercial builder, and name the side you want: construction or materials.
2. Bring a real takeoff. The engineer postings ask for drawing interpretation, quantity takeoffs and trigonometric calculations. A class project where you priced or quantified real work is directly relevant, so put it on your resume.
3. Look at the less crowded tracks. Plant engineer, equipment, material sales and business administration internships draw fewer applicants than field engineering. Cal Poly students can also look at the Granite Heavy Civil Minor, which includes a paid summer internship.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

Do Granite interns get benefits?
Yes. Every posting says eligible interns can choose between two Anthem Blue Cross PPO medical plans, with Granite paying 100% of the premium on the most popular one, plus dental, vision, life and disability coverage, and a 401(k) with a 100% match on the first 6% you defer.
Where are Granite Construction internships?
On 3 October 2026: California (14 postings, from Watsonville and the Bay Area to Indio and Santa Maria), Salt Lake City, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Garland in Texas, Anchorage, Des Plaines in Illinois, and Cleveland. Internships are on site, and engineer roles involve outdoor work near heavy equipment.
How many interns does Granite hire?
Granite employed 243 interns from 95 colleges and universities in 2025, according to its annual report. It doesn't publish a summer 2027 class size or a return-offer rate, though one 2026 intern on its internships page says it was a second Granite internship.
What majors does Granite want for interns?
Engineer postings prefer civil engineering, construction management or business administration; safety postings want safety or occupational health; equipment postings want engineering or information systems management; the business administration intern should study finance or accounting. You need to be working toward a bachelor's degree, though material sales and the Utah engineer posting accept two years of college.
Is Granite Construction the same as Graniterock?
No. Graniterock is a separate Central California construction materials company with its own internship program. Granite Construction is the NYSE-listed heavy civil contractor headquartered in Watsonville, California, and you apply to it only through its Workday board at granite.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/careers. Both have roots on California's Central Coast, so check the employer name on any posting.
Granite's Midwest and tunnel postings close on 31 October and the rest fill office by office, so apply now, then use the weeks before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
