Last updated: October 2026
GlobalFoundries is hiring its summer 2027 interns right now, and it isn't waiting around. On 3 October 2026 its Workday board carried 36 US summer-2027 intern requisitions across 26 roles, posted in batches between 14 August and 1 October, each listing an expected $20 to $40 an hour. At least three roles have already closed, and a Malta process and equipment listing went from seven requisitions to two in about a week. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
Speed matters here more than at most employers. GF's own early-career FAQ says it targets filling US internships "by the end of December, if not sooner."
What Is a GlobalFoundries Internship?
A GlobalFoundries internship is a paid 10-to-12-week summer role at one of the world's largest contract chipmakers, which makes semiconductors for other companies' designs rather than its own. Most US interns work inside its fabs: Fab 8 in Malta, New York, which is also GF's headquarters, and Fab 9 in Essex Junction, Vermont. Business and design interns sit in Austin and Santa Clara.
Every req lists one-on-one mentorship, growth-focused assignments and "the chance to network with executives," and the Fab 9 process and equipment reqs end with an intern poster session. GF calls its interns and co-ops its "entry-level talent pipeline."

When Do GlobalFoundries Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
GF publishes its own calendar: "Applications for our 10-to-12-week summer internships usually open in September for the next year," and it's best to apply "as early as September and October." This cycle actually started earlier. The first summer-2027 req went up on 14 August 2026, a Vermont batch followed on 27 August, Malta and Santa Clara roles landed on 25 September, and a fourth batch, mostly Austin business roles plus Malta reliability and technology-development work, posted between 28 September and 1 October.
The calendar is stable year to year. The earliest summer-2026 req we can date was created on 4 August 2025; the earliest summer-2027 one on 7 August 2026, three days later. That puts the lead time at roughly 8 to 10 months before a summer start.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 36 US reqs across 26 roles on 3 October. Some have already closed, including Robotics and Automation (Vermont), Finance and Operations Analyst (Malta) and Design Application Engineering (Santa Clara). Apply to the roles that fit you this week.
More summer-2027 roles may still post, since GF hasn't finished filling its US sites. Check the board weekly and apply the week a role appears; GF's FAQ points applicants to September and October.
Screens and interviews for summer 2027: a recruiter or hiring-manager screen, an interview of about 30 minutes, then feedback usually within 2 to 3 weeks. GF aims to fill its US internships by the end of December.
10 to 12 weeks, at least 40 hours a week, mostly on site at the fabs. Fab 9 interns present their project at an end-of-summer poster session.
Applications for summer 2028 expected to open, if GF keeps the same August start it showed in 2025 and 2026.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
No GF requisition prints a closing date, which can make the window look longer than it is.
Three summer-2027 roles we could track have already shut. The Finance and Operations Analyst req in Malta was posted around 17 September and closed within about ten days. The Malta Advanced Manufacturing Engineering listing posted on 25 September carried seven requisitions on 27 September and two on 3 October; one we probed directly now returns a closed status. Santa Clara's Design Application Engineering req, posted the same day, is closed too.
Treat each role as a short window rather than a season. GF fills headcount as it finds people, and it says so: positions are targeted to be filled "by the end of December, if not sooner."
Which GlobalFoundries Internship Programs Should You Target?
GF's 26 live summer-2027 roles fall into six groups. Fab 9 posts separate Sophomore and Junior versions of its process and equipment roles, so apply to the one that matches your standing on the day you apply.
| Track | Example roles | Sites | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fab process & equipment engineering | Advanced Manufacturing Process / Equipment Engineering (Sophomore and Junior versions) | Essex Junction VT, Malta NY | Open; Malta listing down from 7 reqs to 2; Robotics & Automation closed |
| Technology development & reliability | CMOS FEOL and BEOL Reliability, Process Integration (ULP CMOS), Silicon Photonics Reliability, RF GaN, SiGe HBT Device Modelling (MS/PhD) | Malta NY, Essex Junction VT | Open; most posted 28 Sep 2026 |
| Design & field engineering | Circuit Design (MS/PhD), Field Application Engineering, Sales Account Manager (EE) | Austin TX, Santa Clara CA | Open; Design Application Engineering closed |
| Business | Investor Relations, Internal Audit, SEC Reporting & Accounting, Marketing, Commercial Excellence, End Markets | Austin TX | Open; posted 28 Sep – 1 Oct 2026; Finance & Operations Analyst (Malta) closed |
| Facilities, environmental & legal | Facilities Engineering (Electrical Distribution), Environmental, Environmental Engineering, Commercial Agreements Legal | Essex Junction VT, Malta NY | Open |
| Quantum technology | Quantum Technology Services | Malta NY | Open |
Search "Summer 2027" on GF's Workday board. GF's early-career page carries the FAQ and its campus recruiting events.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
GF's US rules come from its early-career FAQ and repeat in the requisitions:
• Enrollment: "currently enrolled in a full-time accredited degree program."
• Class year: "at least a sophomore at the time of application." Fab 9 splits several roles into Sophomore and Junior reqs.
• GPA: 3.0 minimum. The reqs say "Must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing"; the SiGe HBT Device Modelling role asks for 3.5 and is for graduate students.
• Hours and age: at least 40 hours a week during the internship, and at least 18 years old.
• Work authorization: neither the FAQ nor the summer-2027 reqs we read mention sponsorship, citizenship or export control. Ask your recruiter rather than assume either way.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
Treat it as one. The 3.0 floor appears in GF's FAQ and in 25 of the 26 summer-2027 job descriptions we read, worded as a requirement rather than a preference. GF doesn't say whether its applicant system screens on it automatically.
If you're below 3.0, your realistic route is a later cycle after your GPA rises, or one of GF's technician apprenticeships in Malta or Burlington, which have no GPA rule.

What Skills Does GlobalFoundries Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
We read all 26 live summer-2027 job descriptions in full. The top three bars come from a standard preferred-qualifications block GF puts in every intern req: written and verbal communication, project management, and planning. The role-specific signal starts below them.
AI tools appear in 19 of 26, mostly as "strong interest in" using AI and emerging technologies to work faster. Data analysis and statistics show up in 18, from SPC and design of experiments on the fab roles to shareholder analytics in investor relations. Semiconductor device and process knowledge appears in 15. Programming is narrower than you'd expect: Python, C++ or SQL is named in 7, mostly the reliability and test roles.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
The summer-2027 engineering wave is live everywhere at once, so a GF applicant should send fab applications this month rather than wait for a December cutoff.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (87 postings in September, 36 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each of those skills maps to a remote Externship you can finish this fall, before GF's December fill target.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis & statistics | "Familiarity with statistical data-analysis techniques. Experience with Python, JMP, Minitab, Excel, Power BI" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Manufacturing operations & process improvement | Process and equipment reqs: reduce variability, cut chemical and qualification-wafer cost, improve throughput | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy |
| AI tools for productivity | "Strong interest in" using AI tools and emerging technologies "to enhance productivity" (19 of 26 reqs) | Pfizer AI-Powered Document Insights |
| SQL & data handling | "exposure to Power BI, Power Platform or SQL is an advantage" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Finance & reporting (Austin business roles) | SEC Reporting & Accounting, Internal Audit and Investor Relations intern reqs | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
Match the project to the track: a fab applicant gets the most from the data or operations project, while an Austin business applicant should take the finance one.
What Is the GlobalFoundries Application and Interview Process Like?
GF describes a short process, and it moves faster than most:
1. Apply on Workday. Pick the req that matches your class year; Fab 9 posts separate Sophomore and Junior versions of the same role.
2. Recruiter or hiring-manager screen. GF screens applications first, then contacts the shortlist.
3. One interview of about 30 minutes. Online or by phone, per GF's FAQ. Expect fab fundamentals for engineering roles: what SPC and DOE are for, and how you'd approach a tool problem.
4. Follow-ups in some cases. Some roles add interviews with other team members or an assessment test.
5. Feedback within 2 to 3 weeks. That's GF's own stated turnaround, and offers for summer 2027 are targeted by the end of December.
GF also recruits on campus. Its early-career page lists the UAlbany Technology and Science Job and Internship Fair on 7 October 2026 among its upcoming events.
What the Community Says
Reddit has almost nothing on GF's US internship itself, so two of these cards are about full-time and site culture, and the third comes from dated summer-2026 intern reviews on Indeed.
An electrical engineering senior weighing a TSMC return offer against a GF new-grad offer in Malta says GF's roughly $80K was at the top of its range for bachelor's new grads, but credits GF with better work-life balance and no on-call rotation. Commenters split on which to take.
People who know the Essex Junction fab say the experience depends heavily on the job. One engineer-side commenter says the industry asks a lot for the pay, while a former eight-year employee praises the benefits and the cross-training (2023 thread).
Summer-2026 interns in Malta, Essex Junction and Austin describe supportive mentors and projects that cut costs or automated processes. Several also warn about a steep learning curve: nobody walks you through it step by step, so you have to ask.
How Do You Stand Out in a Fast-Filling Intern Class?
Three moves.
First, apply in the first week a role appears. That beats any polish you'd add by waiting, because GF fills reqs as it goes and has already closed three roles this cycle.
Second, speak fab. Process and equipment reqs ask for knowledge of statistical process control, design of experiments and semiconductor manufacturing. Be ready to explain why a fab cares about yield and cost of ownership. A class project that used SPC or a DOE, even outside semiconductors, gives you a real answer.
Third, show you'll ask for help. Summer-2026 interns on Indeed say the learning curve is steep and nobody hand-holds, so a story about getting yourself unstuck lands well.
Don't expect a conversion number: GF says an internship "can lead to a full-time position" depending on performance and business needs, and doesn't publish a rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 GlobalFoundries internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and although one "Human Resources Intern, Digital & AI (Summer 2026)" req is still visible on GF's board, that summer has already ended. Apply for summer 2027 instead: 36 US summer-2027 reqs were live on 3 October 2026, and GF aims to fill them by the end of December.
When do GlobalFoundries summer 2027 applications open and close?
They're open now. GF posted summer-2027 US roles between 14 August and 1 October 2026 and aims to fill them by the end of December, "if not sooner." No req states a closing date, and at least three roles have already closed, so apply the week a role appears rather than waiting.
How much do GlobalFoundries interns make?
The summer-2027 requisitions list an expected $20 to $40 an hour, set by qualifications, experience and location. GF says all its internships are paid, and it offers a housing stipend plus search help to interns who relocate, though it doesn't publish the stipend amount. Ask about both during your interview.
What are the GlobalFoundries internship requirements?
You need to be enrolled full time in an accredited degree program, be at least a sophomore when you apply, hold a 3.0 GPA or higher, be at least 18, and work at least 40 hours a week. The graduate SiGe device-modelling role asks for a 3.5 GPA instead.
Where are GlobalFoundries internships located?
Mostly at the fabs. On 3 October 2026 the summer-2027 reqs were in Essex Junction, Vermont (14), Malta, New York (11), Austin, Texas (9) and Santa Clara, California (2). Fab roles are on site; business roles such as investor relations, audit and marketing sit in Austin.
What is the GlobalFoundries intern interview like?
Short. GF's FAQ describes a recruiter or hiring-manager screen, an online or phone interview of about 30 minutes, and feedback usually within 2 to 3 weeks. Some roles add follow-up interviews with team members or an assessment test, so prepare fab basics like SPC and design of experiments.
Can a GlobalFoundries internship lead to a full-time job?
It can. GF says an internship "can lead to a full-time position depending upon in-role performance and business needs" and calls interns its entry-level talent pipeline. It doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its US new-grad roles require a 3.0 GPA and graduation within the past year.
Does GlobalFoundries offer co-ops or non-summer internships in the US?
Rarely. GF says it hires interns and co-ops in summer and through the year, but on 3 October 2026 almost every US intern req was for summer 2027, plus one fall-2026 device engineering role in Malta. The January-to-June 2027 intern cohorts on its board are in Singapore, not the US.
GF's summer-2027 roles are filling now, not in December. Use this fall well: a remote Externship gives you a finished data or operations project to bring to a 30-minute GF interview.
