Applied Materials Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Deadlines & How to Apply

Last updated: August 2026

Applied Materials hires a few hundred summer interns each year across engineering, physical sciences, supply chain, finance and marketing. Its equipment is used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world, backed by record fiscal-2025 revenue of $28.37 billion and $3.57 billion a year in R&D. The pay reflects the bar: official co-op rates are $41 to $54 an hour for advanced-degree students, roughly double the $25.50 market median for chemical and process engineering interns. For the 2027–2028 cycle, Applied says its intern recruiting kicks off in September, and windows close fast: on August 15, 2026, a fall intern req posted the day before had 16 hours left to apply.

What Is an Applied Materials Internship?

An Applied Materials internship is a paid, on-site placement at the world's largest semiconductor capital-equipment maker — the company that designs, builds and services the machines fabs use to produce chips, not the chips themselves. Summer interns work 8 to 12 weeks; co-ops run 6 to 9 months. Glassdoor rates Applied 3.9 out of 5 with 78% recommending it to a friend.

But there's a counterweight: a $181 million restructuring charge in Q4 FY2025, tied to a workforce reduction.

When Do Applied Materials Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Applied Materials publishes a cycle window, unlike many of its peers. Its students-and-early-career FAQ says the intern and NCG recruiting cycle 'kicks off in September and goes through March,' with roles starting in July or August. But there's no single deadline to circle, and individual requisitions close on their own schedule, sometimes within days. Two summer-2027 MBA Finance roles were already live on July 28, 2026.

And on August 15, a fall intern posting was 16 hours from closing after only two days.

Now · August 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applied's board isn't quiet. Eleven US intern and co-op reqs were live on August 15, 2026, including two summer-2027 MBA Finance reqs open until December 31, 2026, and a fall semester intern req that closed two days after posting. The engineering summer-2027 wave hasn't opened yet — Applied says it kicks off in September.

Create the Applied careers profile and upload a résumé so its AI matcher can surface roles when the September wave opens. Pick a function and a site: the Gloucester process co-ops and Santa Clara summer interns are separate requisitions with separate degree bars. Build a documented project. Data analysis and documenting results is the most common ask across Applied's intern reqs (9 of 13).

~September to October 2026EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Applications for summer 2027 expected to open here, projected from Applied's own statement that its intern recruiting cycle "kicks off in September." Three live co-op reqs state "this position may close early based on application volume or candidate selection," and one posting was open for two days. Apply the week a requisition posts.

~October 2026 to March 2027EXPECTED

Applied says candidates "can expect to hear back on interviews as early as October to as late as March." The process averages 30 to 90 days from application to offer: online assessment, recruiter contact, behavioral and technical rounds, often a panel of interviewers from different teams.

Official start window. On-site at Santa Clara, Austin, Gloucester or another US site. Eleven paid holidays, 401(k) with match from day one (100% vested immediately), ESPP at a 15% discount, and service credit if Applied hires you full-time straight after graduation.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

What happens if you wait? Three of Applied's own live co-op requisitions carry the same sentence: 'Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Note: This position may close early based on application volume or candidate selection.' Applied also tells students 'job postings are updated daily, so we encourage you to check our Careers Site regularly.' On August 15, 2026, a fall semester intern requisition posted the previous day had 16 hours left to apply. There's no talent-network email alert to lean on, just a profile account and weekly checking.

Which Applied Materials Internship Programs Should You Target?

Applied Materials intern tracks split three ways, and they aren't interchangeable. The process and materials co-ops are graduate-degree roles in Massachusetts running 6 to 9 months. The summer interns are spread across Santa Clara and Austin in shorter stints.

And the MBA Finance internship requires 4 to 7 years of prior experience. Know which door you're walking through. Which one matches your degree?

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Applied's eligibility rules carry one gate that most aggregators miss:

Enrollment: currently enrolled full-time in an accredited degree program, not graduating until after the current academic year. For summer 2027, that means graduation after December 2027 (our reading of Applied's stated rule).

GPA: a preferred 3.0 or above appears in 8 of 13 JDs; 7 of those 8 write "preferred" and pair it with "in good academic standing," which is a lower bar. But only the Chemist co-op drops the word "preferred." Applied's own résumé guidance asks for GPA alongside "school projects," making it one line item, not the gate.

Degree level — the real filter: 10 of the 13 current intern and co-op requisitions require a Master's, PhD or MBA. The Gloucester process co-ops say "currently pursuing a PhD." The bachelor's-level doors: the summer intern class (not yet posted), the Chemist co-op (BS or MS), and the NCG Process Technician and Field Service programs.

Work authorization: varies by requisition and isn't uniform. Two of the reqs checked close the door explicitly; the other 13 carry no work-authorization clause at all. Students must read their own posting.

Do You Need a Master's or PhD for an Applied Materials Internship?

For most of the roles posted right now, yes. Ten of the 13 intern and co-op requisitions reviewed require a Master's, PhD or MBA, and six of those are advanced-degree process and materials co-ops in Massachusetts.

So where does that leave undergrads? The bachelor's-level doors that exist (the summer intern class, the Chemist co-op, the NCG Process Technician and the Field Service Engineer program) are genuinely different tracks with different skills and different sites. Read the body of the posting, not just the title: one requisition titled "Masters" actually required a PhD in its minimum qualifications.

What Skills Does Applied Materials Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Thirteen Applied Materials intern and co-op JDs repeat one profile with a clear hierarchy. Data analysis and documenting results leads at 9 of 13, followed by cross-functional collaboration at 8 of 13. But the chart's real story is what it doesn't show: 10 of the 13 JDs require a Master's, PhD or MBA, and 6 are graduate-level process co-ops, so the skills tilt toward R&D lab work (wafer metrology, TCAD modeling, thin-film characterization) that doesn't appear in a typical bachelor's-level summer posting.

And four JDs literally ask for a "quick learner"; one writes "a passionate drive, a curious mind and adaptable spirit are expected."

Degree-level caveat: 10 of the 13 require a Master's, PhD or MBA, and 6 of the 13 are advanced-degree process and materials co-ops in Gloucester and Hudson, Massachusetts, so the chart over-represents graduate-level R&D work and under-represents Applied's bachelor's-level summer intern class, whose requisitions were not open on the day of collection.

How Is Demand for Chemical and Process Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?

Chemical / process engineering intern hiring right now: August 2026

Across 96 US chemical and process engineering intern postings tracked this month · aggregate market data, all employers

176 US postings live in the 30 days to Aug 10, up +14.7% from 116 (Jul 8) to 133 (Aug 9) as fall-2026 and summer-2027 cycles opened
Median advertised pay: $25.50/hour (IQR $21.00–$31.75) across 48 pay-disclosing postings; Applied's own co-op rates of $41–$54/hr sit roughly double the market
=
Excel still leads at 34.4% of postings, but Python is at 13.5% and climbing; JMP and Minitab together appear in 9.4%, and Applied names JMP by name
=
88.5% on-site, only 2.1% remote , the most plant-bound engineering internship tracked, and Applied requires all interns to work on-site

August 2026 is this tracker's baseline month, so true month-over-month deltas appear at the next update. The early signal: posting volume is climbing as fall and summer cycles open, and Applied sits well above the market in pay, because it's hiring graduate students for 6-to-9-month terms, not undergraduates for a summer.

Method: aggregate analysis of US chemical and process engineering intern postings via hiring.cafe (primary) and Adzuna (cross-check), August 2026 baseline. Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

So how do you build these skills without a cleanroom? Every bar in the chart maps to a remote Externship that ends in a finished company project, building the adjacent evidence Applied's own requisitions reward, not wafer processing itself.

The overlap isn't wafer-for-wafer — Extern doesn't have a cleanroom Externship.

But it's the documented analysis, applied AI, and cross-functional project work that 9 of 13 Applied JDs ask for.

What Is the Applied Materials Application and Interview Process Like?

Applied's own careers page maps the funnel:

1. Create a profile at appliedmaterials.com/careers and upload a résumé. Applied says its system uses AI to match you with opportunities. Do this before the September wave, not during it.

2. Apply to the specific requisition, not "Applied Materials." To be considered, you must apply to the position posted on the students and early careers website. There is no umbrella application.

3. Online assessment. Community reports describe an OA invitation arriving after application, for mechanical, embedded software, process and field service roles. The vendor and format aren't published.

4. Behavioral and technical rounds, often a panel. Applied's own interview guidance names behavioral and technical interviews, problem-solving scenarios, and panel interviews with several interviewers from different teams. Community reports describe a 30-minute first round followed by two 60-minute finals.

5. Decision: 30 to 90 days from application to offer (official average). Community reports are consistent with the long end.

Applied's own anti-fraud guidance: its recruiters 'will not make an initial contact… via text or instant message.'

So if a text is the first thing you get, it isn't Applied.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three threads from the semiconductor and CS communities.

Applied mid-November, got an assessment for the Massachusetts location, then just silence. Applied's FAQ says 30 to 90 days, and they really do mean the 90.

The loop was a 30-minute first round and then two roughly 60-minute final rounds. Nothing tricky, behavioral and technical. But the panel means several people are watching you solve problems live.

r/csMajors consensus, paraphrased · read the thread

Pay is good and the interview process was solid, but field service is largely shift work. Expect on-call rotations, travel to customer fabs, and cleanroom hours. That's the trade for the $27 to $37 an hour.

How Do You Stand Out When Requisitions Close in Two Days?

Four moves, starting with the calendar. Applied posts daily, has no talent-network alert, and one fall-2026 intern req was open for two days. Check the board weekly from September onward, and apply the week a posting appears, since three live reqs state they "may close early based on application volume." Second, pick a function and a site. The Gloucester process co-ops want a PhD in materials science, and the Santa Clara summer roles want mechanical or physics backgrounds. Applying to "the internship" is applying to nothing. Third, bring documented analysis. Data analysis and documenting results is the most common ask in Applied's intern JDs (9 of 13), and four reqs literally ask for a "quick learner" — a project write-up is how you prove that in a document. What if the degree bar blocks you? Fourth, if the graduate-degree bar is the blocker, go through the doors that aren't degree-gated: the Chemist co-op takes a Bachelor's, and the Process Technician and Field Service programs take an associate degree or trade certification.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Applied Materials internship?

No. Applied's summer-2026 intern class started in July 2026 and those requisitions are gone.

But what's still open is different: fall-2026 and 2026–2027 co-ops in Gloucester and Santa Clara, and two summer-2027 MBA Finance roles. The summer-2027 engineering wave is expected to open around September 2026.

When do Applied Materials internship applications open for summer 2027?

Around September 2026, roughly 10 to 11 months before a July or August 2027 start. Applied states its intern and new-grad recruiting cycle "kicks off in September and goes through March," with interview outcomes landing between October and March. Summer-2027 MBA Finance roles are already open and close December 31, 2026.

Are Applied Materials internships rolling?

Reviewed on a rolling basis, but they close fast. Three live co-op requisitions state "applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis" and add that "this position may close early based on application volume or candidate selection." One fall-2026 intern requisition posted on August 14, 2026 closed on August 16. Apply the week it posts.

What GPA does Applied Materials require for an internship?

A 3.0 preferred, not a hard cutoff. Eight of the 13 Applied intern requisitions reviewed ask that students be "in good academic standing at their university, with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale." Only the Chemist co-op drops the word "preferred."

How much do Applied Materials interns get paid?

Applied's own postings list $41 to $54 per hour for advanced-degree process, materials and semester interns, and $22.00 to $37.40 per hour for new-grad process technician and field service roles. Indeed's community average for an Applied intern is $38.53 an hour. Bachelor's-level summer intern rates aren't published.

What is the Applied Materials intern interview process like?

It starts with an online assessment, then recruiter contact, then behavioral and technical rounds that often include a panel of interviewers from different teams. Applied says the process averages 30 to 90 days from application to offer. Community reports describe a 30-minute first round followed by two 60-minute finals.

Where are Applied Materials internships located?

Santa Clara, California and Austin, Texas are the two largest intern sites. Applied also hires interns and early-career staff in Albany NY, Gloucester MA, Phoenix AZ, Hillsboro OR and Kalispell MT. The advanced-degree process and materials co-ops are in Massachusetts. All intern roles are on-site; there's no remote option.

Do Applied Materials interns get return offers?

Applied doesn't publish a conversion rate, but it's built mechanics around returning interns: an intern hired into a regular full-time role straight after graduation gets service credit equal to their internship, counting toward bonus eligibility and service awards. Its new-grad reqs also list a prior Applied internship as a preferred qualification.

Applied's intern recruiting cycle kicks off in September 2026 for summer 2027, and requisitions can close in days. Spend the runway on proof: a remote Externship builds the documented data analysis and applied AI work that 9 of 13 Applied intern JDs ask for — finished, company-branded evidence that a week-one application can point at.
