The U.S. Department of Transportation runs its flagship student program through one application, and it's open right now. Applications for the Department of Transportation Summer Internship Program (DOTSI) opened on 1 October 2026 and close on 31 January 2027, for a 10-week summer internship from 1 June to 10 August 2027. The paid Pathways track (1DOT) is different: it posts on USAJOBS for a few weeks at a time, and nothing is open today. In plain words: you apply between October 2026 and January 2027, you intern in summer 2027. Only U.S. citizens can apply, and this guide covers the federal department, not state DOTs.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. What Is a Department of Transportation Internship?

A Department of Transportation internship is a student placement inside the federal agency that oversees roads, aviation, rail, transit, pipelines and shipping. The department has 11 operating administrations, including the FAA, FHWA, FMCSA, FRA, FTA, MARAD, NHTSA and PHMSA. Students enter through separate routes: DOTSI, a 10-week summer program that DOT's contractor GMG Management Consulting says has run for over two decades; the paid Pathways Internship Program (1DOT); the Secretarial Internship Program; and agency programs such as the FAA's. Each has its own calendar, so read the one that fits your year.

When Do Department of Transportation Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The two main routes run on different clocks. DOTSI opens in early October and closes on 31 January, about 8 months before the 1 June start and 4 months before it at the deadline. Pathways is the opposite: in 2026 the 1DOT announcement was open from 13 February to 6 March, then a second window ran in April, roughly 3 months before a spring or summer start. We have one measured Pathways cycle, so treat the 2027 window as a projection.

DOTSI for summer 2027 is open until 31 January 2027. The official page says not to apply before 1 October, and submitting early is encouraged. DOT held a Virtual Pitch Day for summer 2027 internships on 14 October.

While you draft the DOTSI essay, build a finished project to write about: the Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship or the ARCeH Data Analytics Externship.

DOTSI deadline. Required: the application, a transcript, one reference, a resume and a writing sample (one page for undergraduates, up to two for graduate students, up to five for law students).

Around February to March 2027EXPECTED

Expected: DOTSI interviews, with selections starting in late February. Also expected: a 1DOT Pathways announcement on USAJOBS for summer 2027, projected from the 13 February to 6 March 2026 window.

By 1 May 2027EXPECTED

DOTSI applicants are notified by email no later than 1 May, and selected students have a set number of business days to accept. A background investigation follows acceptance.

1 June to 10 August 2027

DOTSI summer 2027 runs 10 weeks. Placement depends on your major, preferred operating administration, interests and geography.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

DOTSI is a hard-deadline program, not a rolling one: the cutoff is 31 January 2027, and selections begin in late February. The program's operator encourages early submission, and complete applications are what get reviewed. Pathways announcements are the short-window kind, open about two to three weeks at a time, so a saved USAJOBS search with email alerts is the only dependable way to catch one. Write the DOTSI essay now and ask for your reference early.

Which Department of Transportation Internship Programs Should You Target?

The department offers several student routes. These are the main ones.

ProgramFocusDurationKey skills
DOTSI (summer)Placement across DOT operating administrations by major and interest; stipend, housing and travel10 weeks, 1 Jun to 10 Aug 2027Research, writing, oral presentation
1DOT Internship Program (Pathways)Paid, multi-semester developmental internship with a path to a permanent DOT job480 hours minimum, over several termsVaries by office: policy, program analysis, finance, engineering
Secretarial Internship ProgramPaid summer internship in the National Capital Region10 weeks, 640 hours before degree completionPolicy support, writing, analysis
FAA Gateways InternshipPaid student trainee roles at the FAA, posted on USAJOBSVariesVaries by FAA office
FAA Volunteer Service ProgramUnpaid volunteer projects; the August 2026 announcements list $0 payVariesVaries by project

Pay is stated per route above. Details sit on the DOT student page and the FAA student page. State DOT internships (NYSDOT, WSDOT and others) are separate employers with their own calendars.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility differs by route, and the requirements come from the official pages.

• Citizenship: U.S. citizens only, for both DOTSI and Pathways.

• DOTSI enrollment: a degree program at an accredited U.S. institution. Undergraduates must be sophomores, juniors or seniors for the coming fall (community college students need a completed first year); graduate students must be enrolled in the fall; law students must be entering their second or third year.

• Graduating students: spring or summer graduates aren't eligible unless accepted for further enrollment, such as graduate school.

• Pathways: at least half-time enrollment in a degree or certificate program, a 2.9 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, and completion of 480 hours before you finish your degree.

• Screening: DOTSI participants go through employment eligibility verification and a background investigation after acceptance. No security clearance is mentioned.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

For DOTSI, not strictly. The FHWA page says priority goes to applicants with a 3.0 or better, in the major or cumulative, and that candidates are judged on the completeness of the application. Pathways is firmer: the DOT page lists a 2.9 cumulative GPA. In both cases a complete package with a strong essay is what you control.

What Skills Does the Department of Transportation Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

DOT doesn't publish a skills list for interns, so this section uses what the official pages say. The student page welcomes business, finance, engineering, policy, communications, data analytics, human resources, information technology, environmental studies and public administration majors. DOTSI itself stresses research, writing and oral presentation, and the FHWA testimonials describe memos, resource compilations and safety investigations. Past FHWA Pathways titles included civil engineering, program analysis and finance roles.

Note: Skill percentages are left out because DOT publishes no intern job descriptions to count. Fields and skills above come from the DOT student page and the FHWA DOTSI page, read 16 October 2026.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each row ties something DOT's pages ask for to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to write about.

None of these Externships is connected to the Department of Transportation. They help because DOTSI asks for a written account of your goals, and a completed project gives that essay something concrete.

What Is the Department of Transportation Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the FHWA DOTSI page and the operator's site.

1. Apply on or after 1 October. Use the application on GMG's site, which the FHWA page links to. Choose your areas of interest and preferred operating administration; placement weighs major, interest and geography.

2. Submit five items. The application, a transcript, one written reference, a resume and a writing sample.

3. Interview. Applicants are called for interviews in February and March; selections begin in late February.

4. Accept and clear. You're notified by 1 May, reply by email within a set number of business days, then complete eligibility verification and a background investigation.

For Pathways, save a USAJOBS search for the Department of Transportation and the student hiring path, and expect a window of two to three weeks.

What Students on Reddit Say

There's very little first-hand discussion of the federal program, and most DOT threads are about state agencies, so we used one thread.

Accepted DOTSI interns asked how much housing is covered. The administrator's reply to one offer holder was only that housing and travel are covered and coordinated by the program operator, so ask how your placement city works before you accept.

How Do You Stand Out for a Department of Transportation Internship?

First, write a specific essay. DOTSI asks what transportation topics interest you and how the program fits your goals, so name a problem, such as Complete Streets, freight safety or transit funding, and tie it to your coursework. Second, apply early: the deadline is 31 January, but selections begin in late February. Third, treat Pathways as a second shot, because its short USAJOBS windows reward people with alerts already set. DOT doesn't publish applicant counts, class sizes or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Department of Transportation internship?

No. The summer 2026 DOT programs have ended, and the 1DOT Pathways window closed in spring 2026. What's open now is DOTSI for summer 2027, which accepts applications until 31 January 2027. Pathways is expected to post again around February 2027, so set a USAJOBS alert.

When is the DOTSI deadline?

31 January 2027. Applications opened on 1 October 2026, and the official page asks applicants not to apply earlier. Interviews run in February and March, selections begin in late February, and everyone is notified by email no later than 1 May. Submitting early is encouraged.

Are Department of Transportation internships paid?

DOTSI interns receive a stipend, furnished housing and round-trip travel, but the amount isn't on the official pages. The 1DOT Pathways posting from February 2026 paid GS-3 to GS-7, $36,735 to $57,736 a year. FAA volunteer announcements list $0 pay, so they are unpaid. Check each announcement before applying.

Who is eligible for DOTSI?

U.S. citizens enrolled at accredited U.S. institutions: sophomores, juniors or seniors, graduate students, or law students entering their second or third year. Graduating spring or summer students are ineligible unless accepted for further enrollment. Priority goes to a 3.0 GPA or better, and you must be free for all 10 weeks.

When does the DOTSI internship start?

The summer 2027 program runs 1 June to 10 August 2027, ten weeks, according to the application page. Placement depends on your major, preferred DOT operating administration, interests and geography. Selected students complete employment eligibility verification and a background investigation after accepting.

What is the 1DOT Pathways internship?

It's a paid, multi-semester federal internship with a stated pipeline to permanent DOT employment after you complete the program and graduate. It requires 480 hours, a 2.9 GPA and U.S. citizenship. Announcements post on USAJOBS for two to three weeks, so a saved search matters.

Do I need a security clearance?

No clearance is mentioned on the DOT or FHWA pages. Selected DOTSI students go through employment eligibility verification and a background investigation, and Pathways hires face a pre-employment background investigation. Neither page describes a clearance level, so confirm with the program contact if your situation is unusual.

Is this the same as a state DOT internship?

No. This guide covers the federal U.S. Department of Transportation. State agencies such as NYSDOT, WSDOT or IDOT hire separately, with their own deadlines and sites, and they appear in many search results for "DOT internship". Check the employer name before you apply.

DOTSI closes on 31 January 2027, so draft your essay this month. If you want a finished project to write about, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
