The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) hires students in short bursts, one office at a time, and exactly one student internship is open today. The unpaid CDC Student Research Assistant announcement in Atlanta closes on 23 October 2026. A paid Pathways announcement from the Office of the Secretary stayed open just four days in August 2026 and capped applications at 300, and an Office of Inspector General student trainee announcement closed on 12 October after hitting a 75-application cap. In plain words: there is no single summer 2027 deadline, so you watch USAJOBS from now through spring 2027 and apply within days of a posting for a 2027 start.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. What Is a Department of Health and Human Services Internship?

A Department of Health and Human Services internship is a student placement inside the federal department that oversees the CDC, CMS, FDA, HRSA, the Indian Health Service and NIH. There is no single HHS program. Offices post their own announcements on USAJOBS: paid positions under the Pathways Internship Program, governed by HHS Instruction 362-1, and unpaid student volunteer internships. On 16 October 2026 HHS had 242 open announcements on USAJOBS, and one of them was a student internship. NIH and FDA run their own student programs, and NIH has its own Extern guide.

When Do Department of Health and Human Services Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

HHS has no recruiting season. Its student announcements come from individual offices and are short. USAJOBS records show the Office of the Secretary's Pathways intern announcement open from 10 to 14 August 2026 (four days, capped at 300 applications), the OIG student trainee announcement open from 5 to 12 October 2026 (capped at 75), and the CDC volunteer role open from 9 to 23 October 2026. Because the windows are this short, the lead time between posting and start is weeks to a few months, not a fixed number.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREHARD DEADLINE

One HHS student internship is open: the CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Student Research Assistant, an unpaid, part-time volunteer role in Atlanta, closing 23 October 2026. No paid HHS Pathways internship announcement was open on 16 October 2026.

Late October–December 2026

Prepare before anything posts. Set a USAJOBS saved search for the Department of Health and Human Services, and have a federal-style resume (the OIG announcement set a 2-page limit), a transcript and proof of enrollment ready to upload.

Winter–spring 2027EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

Expected, low confidence: new Pathways and volunteer announcements for summer and fall 2027 placements. HHS has published no summer 2027 dates, and 2026 windows ran from four days to two weeks, so be ready to submit in the first days.

Summer–fall 2027 and laterEXPECTED

Expected: further office-level announcements, as in August 2026 and October 2026. Each one closes on its own date or at its application cap, whichever comes first.

Summer 2027

Selected Pathways interns work part-time or full-time depending on the announcement, and may be eligible for non-competitive conversion after at least 480 hours and finishing their degree. Volunteer internships carry no entitlement to pay or future employment.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

These are hard deadlines with caps, not rolling reviews. The OIG announcement closed after seven days once it hit 75 applications, and the Office of the Secretary's announcement ran four days with a cap of 300. Several announcements also say they can close early, so a Friday-before-the-deadline plan fails. Set a USAJOBS saved search with email alerts, and apply on the day it posts.

Which Department of Health and Human Services Internship Programs Should You Target?

HHS student routes differ by office, pay and format. Keep them separate when you search, because only some are paid.

Read the full announcement on USAJOBS before you apply, since pay, hours and eligibility differ. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health said on its Pathways page that it had no vacancy announcements at this time. This page doesn't cover Virtual Student Federal Service projects; check that program's own listing.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility below comes from the HHS announcements read on 16 October 2026 and applies to the Pathways and volunteer routes.

• Citizenship: "U.S Citizenship is required" on the CDC, OIG and Office of the Secretary announcements.

• Enrollment: Pathways is open to students at least 16 years old enrolled at least half-time, from high school through graduate school; the volunteer route also requires enrollment "not less than half-time."

• Documents: a transcript and proof of student status go with the application; the CDC role also asks for good academic standing.

• Background check: the CDC announcement lists a national security background check type and no clearance; males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered with Selective Service.

• Employment checks: documents are verified through E-Verify.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?

There is no blanket GPA minimum. The CDC volunteer announcement asks for good academic standing, and the OIG announcement lists superior academic achievement (a 3.0 GPA, the upper third of your class or an honor society) as one way for degree holders to qualify at GS-7. Check each announcement, because requirements are written office by office.

What Skills Does the Department of Health and Human Services Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Announcements ask for research, writing and data skills. The CDC role lists literature reviews, writing and public health science. The OIG trainee announcement describes quantitative analysis in R, SAS, SPSS, SQL or Python, plus teamwork and written communication. The Office of the Secretary role is administrative and program support.

Note: Method: three HHS student announcements read on USAJOBS in October 2026 (CDC 887946000, OIG 887494500, Office of the Secretary 879311900). A skill-frequency chart on three postings would mislead, so none is shown.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each row ties a skill from an HHS announcement to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to describe.

None of these Externships is connected to HHS. They help because federal applications are scored on the experience you describe, and a finished project gives you something specific to write.

What Is the Department of Health and Human Services Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from the USAJOBS announcements and HHS Instruction 362-1.

1. Build your USAJOBS profile and resume. Keep it federal-style; the OIG announcement allowed two pages.

2. Search and save. Search the Department of Health and Human Services with the Students hiring path and titles such as Student Trainee, Student Intern or Student Research Assistant.

3. Apply before the cap. Answer the USA Staffing questionnaire and upload your transcript and proof of enrollment. Closing is 11:59 PM Eastern on the close date, or earlier if the cap is reached.

4. Rating and interview. Applicants are rated, referred to the hiring manager and interviewed.

5. Agreement and background check. Pathways interns sign a participant agreement, and appointments depend on a favorable background investigation.

Volunteer announcements can use other submission routes, so follow the instructions on each one.

What the Community Says

Reddit has little on HHS internships specifically. The one first-hand HHS account we found is a 2021 comment in a thread about a NASA Pathways question, so treat it as dated.

A Pathways participant at HHS said many students there work only 20 hours a week while they personally worked full-time, that hours are worth negotiating, and that conversion isn't guaranteed: their agency couldn't secure a position for them and they knew other interns who were not converted.

How Do You Stand Out for an HHS Internship?

First, be early: a saved search and ready documents matter more here than any single credential, since announcements close in days. Second, match the series. Social science, public health and administration announcements each list their own skills, so mirror that language in your resume. Third, choose by pay: Pathways is paid and can convert, while volunteer roles build experience but carry no pay. HHS publishes no applicant counts, class sizes or conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 HHS internship?

No. The summer 2026 paid Pathways announcements have closed, including the Office of the Secretary's in August and the OIG's on 12 October. One unpaid CDC student volunteer internship is open until 23 October 2026. For summer 2027, no dates are published yet, so set a USAJOBS saved search.

Is HHS accepting internship applications right now?

Only one: the CDC Student Research Assistant volunteer internship in Atlanta, open on USAJOBS until 23 October 2026 and unpaid. We found no paid HHS Pathways internship announcement open on 16 October 2026. New ones can appear at any time from individual offices.

Are HHS internships paid?

It depends on the route. Pathways internships are paid on the General Schedule: $31,103 to $45,239 at GS 4–5 and $56,409 to $89,703 at GS 7–9 on 2026 announcements. Student volunteer internships, such as the CDC role, are unpaid, with no salary, stipend or benefits.

How long do HHS internship announcements stay open?

Days to a couple of weeks. The Office of the Secretary's August 2026 announcement ran four days with a cap of 300 applications, and the OIG one closed after seven days at 75. The CDC volunteer role ran 14 days. Apply on the day an announcement posts.

Who can apply for an HHS internship?

U.S. citizens enrolled at least half-time in an accredited school. Pathways covers high school through graduate students, and you must upload a transcript and proof of enrollment. Announcements add a background check, and males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered with Selective Service. There is no blanket GPA minimum.

Can an HHS Pathways internship turn into a job?

It can. HHS says Pathways interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a term or permanent position, and the OIG announcement requires at least 480 hours and degree completion. It adds that conversion isn't guaranteed. Volunteer internships confer no entitlement to employment.

Does the HHS Office for Civil Rights have an open student internship?

Check before applying. HHS's Office for Civil Rights page lists an application period through 31 December 2026, but the underlying USAJOBS announcement shows as closed on 17 April 2026. When the two disagree, follow USAJOBS and use the office's published contact for questions.

When should I start looking for summer 2027 HHS internships?

Now. HHS posts per office with no fixed season, and 2026 announcements ranged from four days to two weeks. Set a USAJOBS saved search for the Department of Health and Human Services in the Students path, and keep your resume, transcript and enrollment proof ready from fall 2026 through spring 2027.

One HHS student internship is open until 23 October 2026, and paid Pathways windows can open and close within days. Set your USAJOBS saved search now, and if you want a finished project to describe in your application, a remote Externship fits around classes at 5 to 10 hours a week.
