The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) runs a paid, part-time internship program, the Blavatnik Internship Program, and it recruits term by term. Spring 2027 applications are now closed, and CFR says summer 2027 applications "will be posted in late-December/early-January." So you apply in winter, and you intern in summer 2027.

This is a part-time role: CFR asks for 14 to 18 hours a week over about 10 to 12 weeks, at its New York or Washington, DC office or fully remote. CFR says it places "more than one hundred interns each year," and its program page says a Blavatnik Family Foundation gift pays every intern.

Nothing is open right now: spring 2027 is closed, and CFR's job board listed no intern roles on 16 October 2026. Summer 2027 is expected to post in late December or early January, with a hard deadline.

CFR's internship is part-time and research- and writing-heavy, so the gap before the summer 2027 posting is a good time to build proof. Externships are short remote projects for real organizations, most commonly 8 weeks long. What Is a Council on Foreign Relations Internship?

A Council on Foreign Relations internship is a place in the Blavatnik Internship Program, a paid, part-time, semester-based program at CFR, the nonpartisan foreign policy think tank and publisher of Foreign Affairs. Interns do "research, editing and writing, event coordination, and/or departmental support," according to CFR's internships page.

CFR was founded in 1921 and describes itself as an "independent national membership organization, think tank, educator, and publisher" on its careers page. Interns also join an Intern Professional Development program of skill workshops and career advice sessions run by Human Resources, and take part in CFR's meetings and events programming.

When Do Council on Foreign Relations Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

CFR posts each term on a fixed schedule, per its internships page: "in June for the fall semester, in September for the spring semester, and in January for the summer semester." The page banner now reads "Applications for spring 2027 are now closed. Summer 2027 applications will be posted in late-December/early-January."

We checked on 16 October 2026. CFR's iCIMS board listed 19 openings, all staff roles, and a live posting and an invented posting id on the same board returned different responses, which confirms the board is working. By our estimate from the posting cadence, summer applications open about five months before a June start. CFR doesn't publish start dates.

CFR says summer 2027 applications will be posted in this window. Each posting carries its own deadline, so apply as soon as it goes up.

Summer 2027 applications are expected to close. CFR hasn't published the date. Summer 2026 applications had closed by 1 March 2026, per an archived copy of CFR's page.

Summer 2027

About 10 to 12 weeks of part-time work, 14 to 18 hours a week, in New York, Washington, DC or fully remote. Fall 2027 postings go up in June 2027.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

CFR is on a hard-deadline model, not rolling review. Each term is posted once with a stated close date, and spring 2027 is now closed. CFR also says it can't respond to inquiries about application status, so there's no way to nudge a late application.

The summer window opens only once a year, in late December or early January. A missed deadline sends you to the fall 2027 posting in June 2027, which is a different term.

Drafting now helps, because the application is a resume plus one general cover letter covering every role you pick. CFR lets you choose up to five departments in a single application.

Which Council on Foreign Relations Internship Programs Should You Target?

CFR has one internship program, and you choose up to five departments within a single application. The departments below are the ones CFR names on its internships page.

DepartmentFocusDurationKey skills
Studies ProgramResearch on foreign policy topics and regions10–12 weeksResearch, writing; some roles want regional or language expertise

CFR says there are "many more" departments than it lists. The full set appears in each posting on the internships page once a term opens.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

CFR publishes its rules in the page body and FAQ:

• Enrollment: currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. Recent graduates are eligible only within a one-semester grace period; CFR's example is that December 2026 graduates qualify for spring 2027 but not summer 2027.

• Coursework: the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework, completed before the internship starts. AP credit doesn't count.

• Majors: generally international relations, political science, economics or related fields. Some roles need a regional specialization or language skills.

• Work authorization: you must have the legal right to work in the US. International students qualify with CPT or OPT, and CFR doesn't sponsor work authorization.

• Location: interns must be physically located in the US for the whole internship, including remote roles.

• Commitment: 14 to 18 hours a week.

Is There a GPA Minimum?

CFR doesn't publish one. Its page and FAQ list no GPA requirement, and its stated priorities are "excellent skills in administration, writing, research, and computers, as well as previous office experience." Writing samples, assignments or editing tests appear in some hiring tracks, so a clean sample can matter more than a number.

What Skills Does the Council on Foreign Relations Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

CFR doesn't post a skills list for interns beyond one sentence on its internships page: "excellent skills in administration, writing, research, and computers, as well as previous office experience." Some roles add a regional specialization or language skills, and some use a writing sample, writing assignment or editing test.

CFR's open job board held only staff roles on 16 October 2026, so we haven't built a skill-frequency chart from job descriptions it doesn't have.

Note: CFR publishes no intern job descriptions to count between terms, so this page shows the skills its internships page names rather than a frequency chart. We'll add one when the summer 2027 postings go live.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

These remote Externships build the research, writing and audience skills CFR's internships page asks for. They support your application and don't replace it.

For CFR itself, the strongest preparation is a tight writing sample and a cover letter that fits every department you pick.

What Is the Council on Foreign Relations Application and Interview Process Like?

CFR describes its process on the internships page and in its FAQ:

1. Apply online. Submit a resume and one general cover letter covering all the roles you want, choose a work location and tick up to five departments.

2. HR phone screen. Shortlisted candidates hear from HR "within several weeks after the application deadline."

3. 30-minute interview. Advancing candidates meet the hiring team.

4. Assessment, for some roles. A writing sample, writing assignment or editing test.

5. Letter of recommendation. Finalists submit one.

6. Offer and transcript. Selected candidates then submit an official or unofficial transcript.

What Students on Reddit Say

Applicants on Reddit mostly talk about timing and waiting. Each card is one person's or one thread's account, paraphrased.

Fall 2026 applicants said the deadline was in early July and that the first interview invitations for New York roles reached some of them on 3 August. A commenter said that in an earlier cycle a first interview took more than six weeks to arrive.

Summer 2026 applicants were still waiting for news four to five weeks after applying, in early March 2026. Some had received phone-interview emails by then, and a commenter noted CFR's site said replies come generally within four weeks.

A former fall intern described two interviews, then a request for references, then an offer about two days after the references went in.

How Do You Stand Out for a CFR Internship?

Three moves, all before the posting goes up.

First, pick your five departments deliberately. The application caps you at five, and the cover letter has to work for all of them, since CFR asks for one general letter rather than one per role.

Second, prepare a writing sample. Some roles use a writing sample, writing assignment or editing test, and finalists also need a recommender ready.

Third, plan around the term cycle. Set a reminder for late December, apply on posting day, and if you're an international student, start your CPT or OPT paperwork with your school well before the start date.

On what comes after: CFR doesn't publish a return-offer or conversion rate, so treat the internship as exposure to foreign policy career paths rather than a guaranteed pipeline.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a spring 2027 CFR internship?

No. CFR's internships page says spring 2027 applications are now closed. CFR has not published the closing date on its own pages. The next posting is summer 2027, which CFR says will go up in late December or early January. Fall 2027 is posted in June 2027, so those are your next two chances.

When do summer 2027 CFR internship applications open?

CFR's internships page says summer 2027 applications will be posted in late December or early January. The close date isn't published; CFR's archived page shows summer 2026 had closed by 1 March 2026, so expect roughly that timing, with low confidence. Each term has a hard deadline, so apply when the posting goes up.

Are CFR internships paid?

Yes. CFR says every intern receives a competitive hourly wage, funded by a Blavatnik Family Foundation gift. The hourly rate is not published on cfr.org, so check the posting on CFR's job board when the summer 2027 roles go live. CFR's internships page is the official source.

How long is a CFR internship and how many hours a week?

CFR's fall, spring and summer internships generally span 10 to 12 weeks, and interns commit to 14 to 18 hours a week. That makes the role part-time rather than a full-time summer job, so it can fit alongside classes or a second commitment.

Where are CFR internships located?

CFR hires interns for its New York and Washington, DC offices on a hybrid basis, and some positions are fully remote. Each posting says which applies. Remote interns still need to be physically located in the US for the whole internship.

Can international students apply for a CFR internship?

Yes, if they have US work authorization such as CPT or OPT. CFR doesn't sponsor work authorization, and every intern must be physically in the US during the internship, including remote ones. Citizenship isn't required, only the legal right to work in the United States.

Can recent graduates apply for a CFR internship?

Only within a one-semester grace period after graduating. CFR's example is that someone graduating in December 2026 can apply for spring 2027 but not summer 2027. After that window, CFR's student internship is no longer open to you, so time your application to your graduation date.

What is the CFR internship hiring process?

You submit a resume and one general cover letter, then shortlisted candidates get an HR phone screen and a 30-minute team interview. Some roles add a writing or editing assessment. Finalists submit a letter of recommendation, and selected candidates provide a transcript.

CFR's summer 2027 posting is due in late December or early January. Draft your cover letter now, and if you want to build research and writing proof in the meantime, a remote Externship is one way to start.
