Last updated: October 2026
The Brookings Institution runs paid internship cohorts every spring, summer and fall, and the one open right now is spring 2027. Fifteen roles went up the week of 5 October 2026 and the application deadline is Saturday 7 November 2026, with selections on 18 December and a start on 19 January or 1 February 2027. Every spring role pays $18.40 an hour.
Summer 2027 is the cohort most readers want, and it isn't open yet. Based on the summer 2026 schedule, we expect postings around the week of 18 January 2027, about 4.5 months before a June start. In plain words: you can apply this fall for spring 2027, or in January 2027 for summer 2027.

What Is a Brookings Institution Internship?
A Brookings internship is a paid, roughly 12-week placement at the Brookings Institution, the Washington think tank, with a research program or a business unit such as communications or finance. Brookings says it provides paid internships to nearly 150 degree-seeking students a year, in cohorts every spring, summer and fall.
The Brookings Institution describes itself as providing nonpartisan research and policy strategies. Interns work alongside experts and can attend think-tank events, professional development workshops and public events. This guide describes the internship program, not Brookings' research positions.

When Do Brookings Institution Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Brookings posts a separate schedule for each cohort. For spring 2027 the official internships page lists openings posted from the week of 5 October 2026, an application deadline of 7 November, selections on 18 December, and cohort start dates of 19 January or 1 February 2027. The 15 roles on the interns board were posted on 6 and 9 October.
The summer pattern comes from last year. An archived copy of the official page showed summer 2026 postings in the week of 19 January 2026, a 22 February deadline, selections the week of 3 April and starts on 1 or 16 June. A Brookings LinkedIn post gave 25 February for summer 2024, so the date drifts only a few days. We therefore expect summer 2027 postings around 18 January 2027 and a deadline in late February, with medium-high confidence. Fall 2027 is expected around late May 2027, based on the fall 2025 schedule.
The spring 2027 cohort is open: 15 roles across Governance Studies, Economic Studies, Foreign Policy, Global Economy and Development and communications. Summer 2027 hasn't posted yet, so spring is the only cohort you can apply to today.
Spring 2027 application deadline. Brookings says applications must be received before the posted deadline.
Spring selections are made on 18 December. The cohort starts on 19 January or 1 February 2027 and ends on 9 or 23 April.
Summer 2027 roles expected to post, with a deadline expected in late February 2027, selections expected in early April, and starts expected around 1 June and 15 June.
Summer 2027 runs June to August. Fall 2027 roles are expected to post around late May 2027, with a deadline around late June.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Brookings runs a hard deadline per cohort. It doesn't accept applications before a cohort's roles are posted, and it doesn't accept them after the posted deadline, so there is no early-bird advantage and no late entry. What you control is readiness: each application needs its own cover letter.
Applicants on Reddit report applying to several centers and hearing back from only some, so plan to submit three to five tailored applications rather than one. Have your resume and a transcript ready before the cohort opens, because the summer window we expect is about five weeks long.
Which Brookings Institution Internship Programs Should You Target?
You apply to a center or unit, not to Brookings as a whole. The 15 spring-2027 roles show the range:
| Research program or unit | Roles open now (spring 2027) | Focus | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Governance Studies | American Congress & Government; Democracy Resilience Research; Center for Technology Innovation; Brown Center on Education Policy | Research and project support on governance, technology and education policy | $18.40 an hour |
| Economic Studies | Research Internship (emerging markets and monetary policy); Center on Health Policy; Center on Economic Security and Opportunity | Literature reviews, data work and basic statistics | $18.40 an hour |
| Foreign Policy | Talbott Center; Center on the United States and Europe | Research and events | $18.40 an hour |
| Global Economy and Development | Workforce of the Future; Generative AI (research and project coordination); Reimagining Rural; Center for Universal Education roles | Research and project coordination | $18.40 an hour |
| Communications | Government Affairs Internship | Business-unit role in communications | $18.40 an hour |
Brookings notes that a multi-year strategic plan may change which program a role belongs to between application and start. See the Brookings internships page and the interns job board for the full list.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The program details and individual postings set these rules:
• Who can apply: current degree-seeking undergraduate and master's students. Recent graduates are occasionally eligible when a posting says so. PhD students aren't eligible.
• Class year: some roles specify it; the Economic Studies research roles, for example, ask for undergraduate juniors or seniors, or graduate students.
• Past interns: current or previous Brookings interns can't intern again.
• Location: you must be in the US for the whole internship. Remote interns can't work from Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island or Washington.
• Hours: most roles set a minimum of 20 hours a week during business hours, with flexibility around classes; a few set 24 to 40.
• Materials: a separate cover letter for each application, a resume and a transcript, plus a writing sample if the posting asks. A background investigation is required.

Can International Students Apply?
Yes, with conditions. Brookings accepts international students who have US employment authorization or who are in F-1 or J-1 status and would apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT). It doesn't accept candidates who need a visa or who would work on Optional Practical Training (OPT).
The program details don't publish a GPA minimum, so don't assume there isn't one; check each posting.
What Skills Does the Brookings Institution Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Across the 15 spring roles, the postings describe research support, writing, analysis and an interest in public policy. Economic Studies roles add working knowledge of statistics and econometrics with Excel and Stata, and tasks such as literature reviews, data cleaning and running regressions. Events and communications roles lean on organization and project coordination.
Strong written and verbal communication is a stated requirement in the role we read in full, and every posting asks for a cover letter that ties your skills to your goals.

| Policy data analysis | Economic Studies: "data gathering from primary and secondary sources, data cleaning and manipulation, and basic statistical analysis" | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics |
| Health policy research | Center on Health Policy research internship | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |

What Is the Brookings Institution Application and Interview Process Like?
The program details and the postings describe this sequence:
1. Wait for the cohort's roles to post. Brookings doesn't accept applications before the internship is posted online.
2. Apply on the interns board. Submit a resume, a transcript and a separate cover letter for each application, plus a writing sample if the posting requires it.
3. Interview. Applicants on Reddit report phone or video interviews with individual centers.
4. Finalist stage. Finalists provide two references or two letters of recommendation; they aren't required at application.
5. Selections and background check. Selections are announced on the posted date (18 December 2026 for spring), followed by a background investigation.
Brookings doesn't publish applicant counts or an acceptance rate.
What Students on Reddit Say
Applicants mostly discuss the wait after applying and how many roles to try:
Fall 2026 applicants said their portal status stayed at "Received Submission" for weeks, while some reported interviews with individual centers such as Brookings Metro and a public-management center. One noted the information sheet mentions a finalist round.
Summer 2026 applicants applied to five or six centers each. One had heard back from three of five, with two interviews and a rejection, and another asked whether to submit only a resume or also a general cover letter.
For summer 2025, one applicant who applied on 23 February got an interview invite on 28 February, while others were still "under review" or "received submission" weeks later. A health policy applicant said references were requested only after acceptance.
How Do You Stand Out for a Brookings Internship?
Three moves, based on how the postings and applicant threads read.
First, write a separate cover letter for every center. The postings require one per application and ask you to tie your skills to your goals, so a generic letter works against you.
Second, apply to several centers. Applicants report submitting three to five applications and hearing back from only some, so spread your bets across areas you can speak to.
Third, show the specific tools. Economic Studies roles name Excel, Stata, statistics and econometrics, so put a project that used them near the top of your resume. Brookings doesn't publish an acceptance rate, so there's no figure to quote.

Yes, if you have US employment authorization or are in F-1 or J-1 status and would apply for Curricular Practical Training. Brookings doesn't accept candidates who need a visa or who would work on Optional Practical Training. You must also be located in the US during the internship.
Can PhD students or past interns apply to Brookings?
No on both counts. The postings say PhD students aren't eligible for internships and direct them to the careers page for open positions. Current or previous Brookings interns can't intern again, so choose the cohort that fits your calendar. Degree-seeking undergraduate and master's students are eligible.
When does the Brookings summer 2027 internship open?
We expect summer 2027 roles to post around the week of 18 January 2027, with a deadline in late February and starts around 1 and 15 June. That projection comes from the summer 2026 schedule on Brookings' own page, which posted 19 January, closed 22 February and started 1 or 16 June.
How long is a Brookings internship?
Typically 12 weeks. The spring 2027 cohort runs from 19 January or 1 February to 9 or 23 April 2027. Most roles require at least 20 hours a week during business hours, with some flexibility around classes, and a few require 24 to 40 hours a week.
Whether you apply this fall or in January, a finished project makes your cover letter concrete. A remote Externship in policy data, health or communications gives each application something specific to point to.
