The Urban Institute runs one student internship: Summer@Urban, a 10-week summer program in Washington, DC with an orientation, workshops, mentoring from an intern manager and end-of-summer lightning talks. The plain-words version of the cycle is that you apply in early 2027 and intern in summer 2027. As of October 16, 2026, the institute's job board lists five open roles and no internships. The only posting date we could trace is a February 22, 2024 research intern role for a June 10 start, so the next window is expected around February to March 2027, with low confidence.

Nothing is open today. Summer 2027 intern roles are expected to post around February to March 2027, projected from one traced posting in February 2024, so confirm on the Workday board.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, usually in 4 to 11 weeks. With the Urban Institute's board empty until early 2027, they are a way to build policy research proof first. The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship is a data-driven decision-making project for a justice nonprofit, and the ARCeH Data Analytics Externship works with health outcome data. Neither is affiliated with the Urban Institute. Explore all Externships.

What Is an Urban Institute Internship?

An Urban Institute internship is a 10-week, full-time summer placement at a Washington, DC policy research nonprofit, where interns support a research center or office. The institute describes it as "Urban's 10-week summer internship program" on its Summer@Urban page, with a welcome orientation, networking with operations staff and senior professionals, workshops, informal mentoring from an intern manager and end-of-summer "lightning talks." In 2024, intern duties included literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, data tables, figures and maps, and event support, per a mirror of the posting. Policy areas named in the latest program guide (2023) range from housing and health to tax, education and justice policy.

When Do Urban Institute Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Urban Institute doesn't publish its internship calendar, so this timeline is a projection from thin evidence. The only dated posting we could trace is a mirror showing two research intern roles posted on February 22, 2024 for a program that ran June 10 to August 16, 2024. That is about three and a half months of lead time, which is far shorter than a fall deadline. The institute's job board (Workday) shows five open roles today, all regular full-time positions, and no intern category. We found no 2025 or 2026 posting dates, so every date for summer 2027 below is expected, and low confidence.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Pre-open. The Workday board lists five roles, all senior or regular full-time, and its facets show no intern bucket. Waiting for a fall deadline would be a mistake because none exists, but there is also nothing to apply to yet.

Use the quiet months to build policy research proof. The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship and the ARCeH Data Analytics Externship are remote Externships that add a finished data project to a resume.

Prepare a resume and cover letter, refresh statistical software (the 2023 guide names SAS, Stata and SPSS for research roles), and shortlist the research centers that match your interests. Past interns quoted on the official page advise reaching out to researchers whose work interests you.

February to March 2027EXPECTED

Summer 2027 intern roles are expected to post, projected from the February 22, 2024 research intern postings. Roles are posted per center, so check the Workday board weekly from January and apply to each one that fits.

Summer 2027

A 10-week full-time program in Washington, DC, expected to run from early or mid June to mid August, based on 2024 dates of June 10 to August 16. No conversion rate to staff roles is published.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

We can't call this a hard deadline or a rolling window, because the evidence is too thin to know. The 2024 intern postings are now marked as no longer accepting applications, and each center posts its own role, so a role you want could close before you see it.

The safe approach is to be ready before the board changes. Have a resume, a cover letter and a short list of centers prepared by January 2027, set a Workday alert, and apply as soon as a matching role appears. The official page says to contact UrbanCareers@urban.org with questions, and the Workday board is the source of truth.

Which Urban Institute Internship Programs Should You Target?

Urban lists one program, and individual research centers and offices post their own intern roles. These are the examples we could trace.

The institute's careers page also lists fellowships, which we haven't reviewed. The only program guide linked from the site is from 2023, so treat its criteria as dated.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Urban doesn't publish 2027 eligibility rules yet. These come from the latest sources, and the dates matter.

• Student status: enrolled students. The 2024 Office of Race and Equity Research posting required enrollment in a graduate program in economics, public policy, psychology, sociology, human development or a related social science.

• GPA: the 2023 program guide lists a "strong GPA" of 3.0 or higher as a selection criterion.

• Skills: Word, Excel and PowerPoint plus research methods experience (2024 posting); SAS, Stata or SPSS for research positions (2023 guide); written and verbal communication.

• Materials: a resume and cover letter, per the 2023 guide.

• Citizenship and work authorization: not found in any source we could open.

• Location: Washington, DC.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

The only published GPA is the "3.0 or higher" selection criterion in the 2023 program guide, and it is listed alongside skills, communication and coursework rather than as an automatic filter. The institute hasn't republished criteria since. Treat 3.0 as the benchmark, and if you're below it, lead with statistical software skills and relevant research experience.

What Skills Does the Urban Institute Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The latest evidence is the 2024 research intern posting and the 2023 program guide. Research and writing: literature reviews, annotated bibliographies and evidence compilation. Data and tools: data tables, figures, maps, Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and SAS, Stata or SPSS for research roles. Communication: written and verbal skills, plus briefs, blogs and events support. The 2024 posting also named surveys, interviews, focus groups and observations as research methods.

Note: No skill-frequency chart for the Urban Institute: its board has no intern posting open, and only two 2024 intern postings were traceable, too few to count across. The skills above come from those postings and the 2023 program guide.

What Is the Urban Institute Application and Interview Process Like?

The institute doesn't publish its steps. This is what the official page, the 2023 guide and the 2024 postings show.

1. Watch the Workday board. Check the Urban careers site weekly from January 2027, since roles are posted per center.

2. Apply online with a resume and cover letter, per the 2023 guide, and tailor them to each center.

3. Ask questions at UrbanCareers@urban.org, the contact on the official page.

4. Interview and decision. We found no published interview format or decision dates.

5. Program. Summer interns get an orientation, workshops, informal mentoring from an intern manager and end-of-summer lightning talks.

Past interns quoted on the official page suggest you can reach out to a researcher whose work interests you.

What Students on Reddit Say

First-hand Urban Institute material is thin. One 2022 comment is the most relevant, so treat it as a single data point.

A commenter who interned at the Urban Institute in college, and at a few other think tanks, said think tanks are competitive and seem to favor big-name schools without requiring them. They also said a local-level think tank internship beforehand probably helped.

How Do You Stand Out for an Urban Institute Internship?

The institute doesn't publish class sizes, applicant counts or an acceptance rate. The one community comment we found calls think tanks competitive.

Three moves help. First, match your methods to the center. The 2024 postings came from the Health Policy Center and the Office of Race and Equity Research, each with its own research focus. Second, bring a stats package and Excel, since the 2023 guide names SAS, Stata and SPSS for research roles. Third, start early on contact: past interns say to reach out to researchers whose work interests you. A finished remote Externship in data analysis gives you a concrete example for your cover letter.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Urban Institute internship?

No. Summer@Urban is a summer-only program, and the institute's Workday board lists five open roles with no internships. The 2024 intern postings we traced are marked as no longer accepting applications. The next cycle, summer 2027, hasn't posted and is expected around February to March 2027.

When do Urban Institute internship applications open?

The institute doesn't publish dates. The only posting we could trace went up on February 22, 2024 for a June 10 start, so expect early 2027 for summer 2027. That is a single data point, so check the Workday board weekly from January and don't rely on this projection.

Are Urban Institute internships paid?

The 2024 postings describe a 10-week paid internship, and the 2023 program guide also mentions an academic-credit option through external programs. The hourly rate isn't published in any source we could open, and no 2026 posting is available to check. Confirm pay on the posting when it appears.

What GPA do I need for an Urban Institute internship?

The latest program guide on the site, from 2023, lists a strong GPA of 3.0 or higher as a selection criterion, alongside statistical software skills, communication, a resume and cover letter, and relevant coursework. The institute hasn't republished criteria since, so check the 2027 posting for current requirements.

How long is the Urban Institute internship?

Summer@Urban is a 10-week program. The 2023 guide describes it as full time at 40 hours a week, and the 2024 postings say full time is preferred but strong candidates may be considered for part time. The 2024 program ran from June 10 to August 16.

Where is the Urban Institute internship located?

Washington, DC. The institute's careers page mentions remote work options for staff in general, but we couldn't confirm that interns can work remotely. The program includes an in-person orientation, networking with senior professionals and workshops, so plan for DC housing or a commute.

What do Urban Institute interns do?

In the 2024 research intern postings, duties included background research and evidence compilation, literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, support for reports, briefs, blogs, data tables, figures and maps, event support and proposal support. Interns also attend workshops and give end-of-summer lightning talks.

Can an Urban Institute internship lead to a job?

No conversion rate is published. The institute's entry-level Research Assistant and Analyst roles are separate regular jobs, described in the 2023 guide as generally for recent graduates, and one Research Assistant role is open now. An internship helps you build contacts with researchers who may later hire.

The Urban Institute's board is quiet until early 2027. Use the gap to build proof: a remote Externship gives your cover letter a finished data project to describe.
